HOCKEY WA 2005 ANNUAL REPORT

PRESIDENT

Before writing my report for 2005, I read my report for 2004 to get a feel for the progress (or otherwise) that our hockey community has achieved over the past year. Suffice to say we should all be very proud of what has been achieved this year in a year that saw us continu-ing to “bed down” the changes that were initiated during the transitional year of 2004. Australian Hockey League

Whilst 2005 saw many important individual achieve-ments it also saw a year of exceptional team achieve-ments. The SmokeFree WA Diamonds again made the Australian Hockey League finals, going down to Queensland to finish second. The SmokeFree WA Thundersticks just missed a place in the final, going on to trounce Victoria in the play off to finish third. Both teams saw the emergence and further develop-ment of some exciting young players and more im-portantly, the number of national representatives select-ed from both teams increased. Congratulations to Emily Halliday, Kim Walker, Sian Smithson, Kobie McGurk, Bevan George, Ben Bishop, Aaron Hopkins, Michael Boyce and Geoff Boyce for their selection in the respec-tive Senior and Development Squads. State Teams

Our underage state teams also enjoyed success with our U21’s Men’s Team defeating Victoria in the final to win the National Championship in front of a very vocal and parochial home crowd. Jono Charlesworth, Ian Burcher and Fergus Kavanagh were selected in the Junior World Cup team that finished second to Argenti-na. Like the SmokeFree WA Diamonds, our U21’s Womens’ Team again made the final but suffered the heartache of going down to Queensland to finish sec-ond. Kobie McGurk, Jayde Taylor, Kate Hubble, Fiona Boyce, Rheannin Kelly and Shelley Liddelow were se-lected to play in the Women’s Junior World Cup finish-ing fourth. Our U18 Men’s team repeated the success of our U21’s winning the final in Wollongong while our Women fin-

ished third on the Gold Coast. With the “babies” of our underage teams the Under 15’s saw the girls take off the Championship with a win against Queensland and our boys finishing second against Queensland. Western Australia continues to not only excel in field hockey but also in the Indoor Hockey arena. Late last year, our Senior and U21 indoor teams dominated the national championships with both the Men’s teams win-ning their championships while the Women finished third. The U18 Men also finished third with our Women finishing second. Congratulations to Amanda Calton, Rheannin Kelly, Kym Pradera, Fiona Young, Penny Yorke, Nicole Zomer, Jason Black, Peter Chapman, Andrew Hunt, George Watts, Graham Watts and Rohan Wilson for their selection in the 2005 National Indoor squads. In addition, Steve Sexton, Dirranie Kirby and Lisa Clarke were selected in the National Country Squads after this year’s Country Championships. Our on field successes were nothing short of extraordi-nary and they are a by-product of a great deal of work off the field. Committees

In nearly two years since Hockey WA assumed respon-sibility for both the Men’s and Women’s competitions, the progress we have made is outstanding. The collective work of Committee Convenors and Mem-bers, a number of different working groups, staff, volun-teers, club officials and my fellow Board members is an amazing team effort that is taking our sport forward, in a very positive direction. But just as on the field and when in the lead, we all know not to ease off but to work even harder, so too with the management and development of our sport, we know there is always more to do. I would sincerely like to thank all of our volunteers for their huge contribution to our sport and for continuing to afford our sport such a strong administrative base. We here in the Western Australian hockey community are truly blessed with some very talented people. Thank You

I must again express the gratitude of the hockey com-munity in the West to our State Government. They show the support of our sport through their regular at-tendance at our major events, through ongoing funding and through the Department of Sport and Recreation and are a key to the success of Western Australian hockey. I would also like to thank our sponsors for their ongoing support of hockey. Our major sponsor Healthway, com-petition sponsor Goundrey Wines, country hockey sponsor CBH Group as well as Cadbury Schweppes, Gryphon, Hockey Action, Hockey International and Hillcrest Litigation Services deserve our ongoing appre-ciation. I also acknowledge the many local businesses who support our state teams as well as valuable sup-pliers in Rising Stars, Precision Films, WA Trophies and Gifts and Lamb Print.

HOCKEY WA 2005 ANNUAL REPORT

Hockey WA works closely with our partners, the Aus-tralian Institute of Sport, the Western Australian Insti-tute of Sport, Perth Hockey Stadium and Curtin Univer-sity of Technology who collectively help to bring out the best in Western Australian hockey. Hockey in Western Australia has a long and distin-guished history and I would like to thank all our life members for their assistance in my ongoing education in this area and for ensuring that our hockey traditions are never lost or forgotten.

Coming from a club background, I must acknowledge the role clubs, their officials and members play in West-ern Australian hockey. In many ways they are Western Australian hockey and we must always support their place in the sport. I would also like to sincerely thank my Vice President – David Miller and Board members Colin Howell, Nola Bezant, Kim Jones, Tony Leeflang, Ann Prior and Cameron Scadding for their tremendous contribution to our sport and in demonstrating the leadership that is required to ensure that hockey in Western Australia continues to grow and develop. In closing special thanks must go to our tirelessly hard-working staff. To current staff members Alison Burge, Sue Cook, Alex Johnston, Grant Mitton, Alistair Park, Jean Schonberg, Damien Todorovic, Laraine Waldron and new recruits Don Prior and Kim Rodgers and our previous Finance Manager – Gwyn Jones for your on-going dedication and fantastic contribution. This team of professionals are expertly led by Hockey WA Chief Executive Officer – Linda Hamersley who despite being new to our sport in 2004 has fitted into the hockey world with considerable aplomb and her vision and di-rection will continue to drive our sport to bigger and better things. Future

The future for Hockey WA and its affiliates looks bright indeed. I know that success will always be ours to have because we aim to serve our community in a spirit of cooperation across all levels of participation and in partnership with Government, and our members. In conclusion I would like to take this opportunity to wish all within our hockey community a safe and pros-perous “off season” and I look forward to 2006 with eagerness and a keen spirit. Yours in hockey Ceri Writer

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

Strategic Plan

2005 was the first year of operating to the three-year strategic plan that was adopted in late 2004. All Com-mittees and staff have worked well to achieve the ob-jectives and targets that were set for the first year. A recent review of the plan against Key Performance In-

dicators shows a very pleasing result in that the majori-ty of objectives have been met, with some objectives being met earlier than anticipated. A formal review of the strategic plan and our objectives for the second year will be undertaken by the Board and adjustments made as necessary to ensure we are providing the best services and structure for the sport. Some key objectives that were furthered this year in-clude the competition review; determining our core business and initiating a corporate governance struc-

ture review; developing and documenting elite player, coach and officials pathways. A research survey was undertaken with random participants from the Metro-politan Grades with the results factoring into the com-petition review. Marketing is an area that requires further attention and is being addressed through the development of a mar-keting plan for Hockey WA and Perth Hockey Stadium. An initial marketing workshop was conducted with ob-jectives and strategies to be prioritised into the plan. The Gala Grand Final Day was the first of many initia-tives that have been formulated to increase our profile. Umpiring is the second area, from the strategic plan that still requires further resourcing and will come into intense focus during 2006. A formal development plan will be created and communicated to the hockey com-munity. Hockey Australia wrote a new strategic plan with all State Associations being involved in the development of the plan. From a State Association perspective it was most rewarding being involved in that process.

Staffing

Two changes to staff occurred during the year with the appointment of Don Prior to the newly created position of Officiating Manager and, after considerable search-ing, Kim Rodgers appointed as Finance Manager. Fur-ther, Alison Burge who was appointed late in 2004 to the new position of Elite Programs Co-ordinator has settled in to the role of looking after our State Teams. Our staff continue to be an asset to the Association with their commitment to the sport and desire to see the par-ticipants achieve the best results. Partnerships

The Board’s focus for this year was to strengthen our partnerships. This was evidenced by the Board’s, and then Council’s, resolution to reach a solution with Hock-ey Australia on the lingering World Cup Women’s Hock-ey Ltd issue. It is pleasing to be able to acknowledge this has been successfully negotiated. Hockey WA and Hockey Australia are now looking forward to continue to build on this foundation. Hockey WA, in conjunction with the Perth Hockey Stadi-um Council, were successful in having the $3.2 million stadium redevelopment debt retired by the State Gov-ernment in April. Further, the State Government has again assisted hockey financially by providing funding that enabled Turf 1 to be replaced with a nylon surface. This places the Stadium in the unique situation of being the only facility in Australia with two different internation-al playing surfaces. Through ongoing positive working relationships, we have successfully secured increased funding from the Department of Sport and Recreation and an increase in our sponsorship commitment from Healthway via pro-motion of the health messages “Smarter than Smoking” and “SmokeFree”. The increase in Healthway sponsor-ship will be directed towards our Junior Recruitment Program. WAIS continues to play a large part in our elite pro-

grams and during the year we changed our agreements from single year to four-year terms, allowing forward planning to be undertaken. We have also now included key performance indicators for underpinning programs

that Hockey WA conduct as a pathway to the WAIS pro-grams. Perth Hockey Stadium

As part of its commitment to assisting hockey, the State Government undertook a review of the operations and governance of the Perth Hockey Stadium through con-tracting an external consultant. The result of this review will see major changes to the structure of the Stadium. Until those changes are effected, Hockey WA will un-dertake a management arrangement for the Stadium being responsible for staffing, administration, facility management and corporate governance. The new structure, when finalised, will allow hockey to be progressed into 2006 and beyond. In conjunction with the Perth Hockey Stadium Council, the hockey community welcomed ten inductees into the Champion’s Room: Sharon Buchanan, Craig Davies, Elspeth Denning OAM, Damon Diletti, Mark Hager, Pe-ter Haslehurst, Rechelle Hawkes OAM, Gordon Pearce AM, Jackie Pereira OAM and Amy Rowland. Photographs of these champions are reproduced on the front cover and their full playing details are contained within the Annual Report. Finance

A full set of audited financial statements will be provided to Council at the reconvened AGM. The statements will reflect that we continued to improve our balance sheet with a budgeted small surplus of approximately $45,000. Our reserves were reduced by the draw down of a five year loan to assist in the completion of the Mel-ville synthetic surface at Morris Buzzacott Reserve. Thank You

As with all non professional sports, the competition would not succeed without the support and dedication of volunteers both at Club/Regional Association and Hockey WA level. On behalf of the Administration, we thank everyone who has assisted and look forward to their continuing involvement. In closing I would like to sincerely thank our President, Ceri Writer, the Board Members and staff of Hockey WA for the support they have provided me through the year. I look forward to working with the hockey community during 2006 and undertaking the task of also managing the Perth Hockey Stadium. Linda Hamersley

DEVELOPMENT MANAGER

The transition of the role of this department to focus on program design and development was completed dur-ing the year. As a result, several new initiatives could be addressed. The following is a summary of the major development tasks undertaken. A major focus in 2005 was to complete development of a fully coordinated metropolitan junior recruitment pro-gram, and commence its implementation. The major components included in-school hockey clinics, Hook in2 Hockey, Minkey and 9’s. A partnership with eight clubs was established with encouraging recruitment results achieved contributing to a growth in metropoli-tan club minkey numbers for the first time for a long time. A supporting resource is now being developed for junior coordinators, coaches, teachers, participants and parents, and will be available for those involved in the program in 2006. Early indications are that the program will expand from eight to 16 clubs next year. Ten coun-try associations also conducted the Hook in2 Hockey component of the program. The implementation of Hook in2 Hockey has been ably undertaken by Alistair Park. Alistair and I traveled to Broome in June to introduce hockey to the region. A total of 750 children enthusiastically participated in school clinics, 380 of whom were indigenous and the trip provided another opportunity to promote the im-portant “Smarter than Smoking” message. Thanks must go to the Hockey Australia Indigenous Program and Healthway for funding for this trip. A program of sustainable research was also com-menced. A general survey to 500 members competing

in lower grades, and an attrition survey to 18 year olds that had left hockey was conducted. The HockeyNet database was also used to quantify the attrition status and highlight problem areas. This research has formed a platform for future program development that can be supported by fact and not assumption.

The process is still in its early stages and will expand over time providing us with greater knowledge of the

strengths and weaknesses of our sport. Our under-standing of attrition rates is greater now than ever be-fore allowing us to commence development of strate-gies to minimize attrition, and compliment the metropol-itan junior recruitment program. It is intended to utilize the Hockey WA website in the future to facilitate a com-munity forum for additional information gathering and improved communication of our research to the hockey community. Our elite program continues to be successful, based on the performances of our state teams. Our representa-tion in senior national teams however remains low. A Level 3 talent squad program has been developed this year to address this issue focusing on 15 to 18 year olds, and individual player skill and game development. It has been designed in conjunction with WAIS, and is Intended to improve the individual quality of players in addition to the team aspects that are currently devel-oped through club and state teams. In addition to this, an above age state team selection policy and process has been designed to improve the management of our elite athletes through our pathway. This department is also coordinating the competition review of the lower grades and contributing to the elite grades. A number of initiatives have been identified through extensive consultation with clubs for imple-mentation in 2006. These include season scheduling, improved fixturing, and club based umpiring. Research during the season indicates that a three tier competi-tion is required to satisfy the preferred playing surface requirements of our membership; all grass, all turf, and a combination of grass and turf. For the longer term (2007 on), different competition structures are being considered to meet this demand. Aligning the struc-tures of the men’s and women’s lower grade competi-tions is also considered a priority in the longer term. The established annual programs were again success-fully conducted this year. These included state and re-gional championships, minkey carnival, coaching and officiating courses, and level 1 and 2 talent squads.

HOCKEY WA 2005 ANNUAL REPORT

This department also continued to provide support and direction to the development officers of the five coordi-nated country development programs in Geraldton, Narrogin, Peel, South West and Albany. Finally, I would like to thank the volunteers that have assisted me in the development area. Hockey contin-ues to enjoy a major contribution from volunteers at club and association level. Most of the objectives iden-tified in the development plan have been achieved re-sulting in the most productive development year for hockey that I can remember. I look forward to building on this success in the future through strong partnership with clubs, associations and volunteers. Grant Mitton

COMPETITIONS MANAGER

2005 was the start of a new evolution with Hockey WA competitions. A number of changes were implemented during this year and a few more are envisaged in the future resulting in a new competition structure for 2006 and 2007. The first major change implemented was the introduc-tion of a single set of rules governing all Hockey WA competitions. This was achieved following work by a number of 2004 Hockey WA Committees. The Junior Committee completely reviewed and updated all junior competition rules, the Senior Committee compared each and every one of the former men’s and women’s competition rules and “picked the most relevant” rule in each case to add to the combined rules (with the ex-ception of the promotion / relegation rules) and the Vet-erans Committee reviewed and updated specific Veter-ans competition rules, as did the Country and Indoor Committees. The Board reviewed the generic rules and the Officiating Committee had input into the rules relating to misconduct cards. Once all of the committees had submitted their re-viewed and updated sections, Tony Leeflang and I be-gan the process of separating the repeated rules from the individual sections into the generic section (such as Premiership tables, Players, Conduct of Matches & Blood Rule). We also revised sections such as Match Reports to include changes required for the implemen-tation of HockeyNet. The final document was approved by the Board in March and urgent amendments were made during the season where it was proven that something had been omitted in the process or conflict-ed with something else that hadn’t been picked up in the original proof reading process. Some rules were identified during the season as not being worded cor-rectly or needing review so another review process will be completed prior to the 2006 season. The second major change was the implementation of the HockeyNet online results system. All fixtures were generated by the new program and they were pub-

lished to a specific web-site that could be accessed via a special link from the Hockey WA web-site. Teams were issued with individual logon details and following their games entered all results and team details via the web-site. Whilst entering details such as goalscorers names was optional for all grades other than Goundrey Cup and Goundrey League, it was encouraging to see how many teams entered this information anyway, par-ticularly in the junior grades. Information / training ses-sions were conducted for Clubs and Associations in the use of the system and we produced step by step in-structional documents for the individual team managers on how to enter the results and team details on-line. The Indoor State League competition has also utilised the online results system and we have established a secondary site for social competitions such as Vets Sevens and plan to use this site for special events such as Country Championships and State Championships next year. We are still working with the SportingPulse software developers to further refine and customise the program to suit our needs and Clubs attending the training sessions have had input into this process as well. Other changes this year included the introduction of two new turf based grades for men (S3A & S3B) and the splitting of women’s SL7 into two divisions due to increased team nominations; fixturing “club days” at various turfs (i.e. a Whitford v Mods day where five or six Whitford turf based teams were all scheduled to play Mods teams at the one venue such as Hale Turf); trying to match up teams at the grass venues so that a number of teams from one club all traveled to the same away venue on the same day; Challenge Cup Gala Day where centralised grass venues were used for Senior and Veterans matches; the introduction of a sin-gle Nomination Kit for senior men’s and women’s com-petitions (and a similar kit for Juniors and Indoor) and the trial Gala Grand Final Day concept. The down-side of the 2005 season was the loss of turf time for a number of junior teams through the decision that the turf at Joondalup Arena was unsafe to play on and the delay to the completion of the Melville Turf. This also meant that many senior teams had to play in timeslots later than those that have been utilised in the past. On a positive note however we had a nett in-crease of twelve senior teams from last year and elev-en junior teams. Nadine Richards

SENIOR COMMITTEE

The 2005 Senior Committee consisted of Roslyn Med-bury (Convenor), Bev Ewen, Oliver Kerr, Kerry Leggett and Christian Willett with the late addition of Pam Wood towards the end of the year. Nola Bezant and Colin Howell were the Board Liaisons to this committee with Nadine Richards as the Staff Liaison. The two major tasks taken on by the committee this year were the review and completion of the Minimum Venue Standards (grass and turf) documents, a pro-

Page 13: 2005 ANNUAL REPORT - revolutioniseSPORT

PAGE 9

HOCKEY WA 2005 ANNUAL REPORT

cess started by the 2004 Senior Committee and the Senior Competition Review (detailed in the Develop-ment Manager’s Report). The committee also took on the task of establishing a promotion and relegation process for the State League 7 grade and is working on the Metro 3 process due to the introduction of the Metro 3E grade early in the sea-son. During the season the committee trialed a Gala Day concept utilising centralised grass venues for the Sen-ior and Veterans Challenge Cup matches with the Met-ropolitan men’s and women’s games being played at Richardson Park (South Perth) and the men’s Veterans games at Fletcher Park (Victoria Park). The feedback received from the Clubs involved in this day was very positive and the concept was again utilised for the grass Grand Finals with matches being played at Ste-vens Reserve (Fremantle), Richardson Park and Fletcher Park (Under 15 and Under 17 matches). The committee also provided two representatives for the working group that organised the Hockey WA Gala Grand Final Day at Perth Hockey Stadium. As was the case last year, the hardest challenge faced by this committee is the recruitment of new members. It was recommended by last year’s committee that new members be ‘targeted’ for their skill sets and experi-ence in a more planned way such as listing prospective people and asking Club Presidents to put forward nom-inations. Obviously this process still needs some re-finement as our Charter allows for up to ten members and we still had four vacancies at the end of the year. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of the Senior Committee members for the time and energy they put into the committee tasks this year and particularly for their patience with the number of out of session votes and discussions held via email towards the end of the-season. Again, with everyone working and with such a big job this year involving the competition review there was a lot of work done at home on many occasions and as the Convener of the committee I must say that this is greatly appreciated. Roslyn Medbury

JUNIOR COMMITTEE An infusion of new members to the 2005 Division was welcomed and helped to provide great enthusiasm and commitment to the many tasks and issues that inevita-bly arise during a full season of junior hockey. In 2005, the Junior Division continued its focus in fostering par-ticipation and excellence at all levels from the Under 11 grades through to the Under 17 grades. Initially, the grading process worked at setting up struc-tures for eight team competitions in all A grades. This created some issues however the intent was to strengthen this grade and to allow all teams to play each team twice. Numbers permitting, A reserve grades were also set up in many of the Under 15 and 17 competitions. This was designed to provide an even

stronger competition below A grade. The grading pro-cess continues to be refined and 2006 will build upon the comprehensive and accurate information requested with nomination forms. In the main, clubs are to be con-gratulated for the quality of the information provided to Hockey WA on the nomination forms. Fixturing and ground allocation continues to draw a great deal of comment from club officials and coaches – with concerns raised about lack of turf time and par-ticular grass fixturing. The removal of the Joondalup Turf from fixturing because of safety concerns created added complications for 2005. Feedback from two junior coordinators meetings during the season was extremely valuable and as much as anything provides a clear direction for the 2006 com-mittee to: • continually refine the grading process and for Hock-

ey WA; • encourage turf access to as many teams in as

grades as possible throughout a season; and

• vigorously promote the need for good umpiring at all levels

With regards to umpiring, the Committee strongly advo-cates that all clubs continue to promote umpiring through club development and coaching programs. I wish to acknowledge the outstanding contribution of junior coordinators and coaches to the development of junior hockey in the State. Your work is greatly appreci-ated. Publicly, I would also like to thank my fellow com-mittee members who all volunteered to actively pro-mote junior hockey at committee level. Finally, to Linda Hamersley, Nadine Richards, Damien Todorovic, Grant Mitton and all those who supported junior hockey in the Hockey WA office thankyou and well done for your ef-forts during the 2005 season. Mike Young

ELITE PERFORMANCE COMMITTEE

I thank Committee Members Adele Boyce, Graham Reid, Neil Hawgood, Jason Duff and Kate Starre (added during 2005) and Hockey WA representatives Alison Burge, Linda Hamersley and Tony Leeflang for their time and contribution throughout the year. The Committee again undertook the role of considering and administering a number of sensitive issues includ-ing: • 2005 AIS athlete draft for the Goundrey Cup and

Goundrey League competitions and associated rulings;

• Inclusion of import players in the Thundersticks and Diamonds teams;

• Implementation and administration of the Above Age Policy. The Committee considered a number

of above age state team selections with an objec-tive to improve management of individual player workloads, increase the size of our talent pool, and at the same time ensure that fast-tracking of suita-ble athletes was not overlooked.

• Evaluation and recommendations for 2006 State Coaches and Managers appointments.

From a strategic perspective, the Committee consid-ered and progressed the following: • Level 3 Talent Development Program; • Review the AIS Draft Policy; • Review the Elite Officials Selection Policy. • Coaches Development Program The Committee continues to lobby the Association with regards to improving cost subsidies to representative players at all age groups as well as supporting the elite development programs that underpin the State teams. Continued good results at National Championships (3 Gold, 3 Silver, 2 Bronze) again proved that we are a dominant State in relation to the performances of our representative teams. We did have an improved number of individuals select-ed in National Teams with nine Junior World Cup (6 Women & 3 Men), four Kookaburras and four Hockey-roos representatives in 2005. It is the aim of our elite development programs to continue to identify and de-velop individual brilliance along with achieving team success that will further increase our National repre-sentation. Colin Brandis

INDOOR COMMITTEE The 2005/ 2006 Indoor Committee consists of John Christie (Convenor), Peter Chapman, Johnson Orr, Mark Sandhu, Kristy Warburton, George Watts, Rohan Wilson and Fiona Young. Mark Tate is the Junior De-velopment Liaison, Kim Jones the Board Liaison and Nadine Richards the Staff Liaison to this committee. The Indoor Committee is constituted differently to other Hockey WA committees in that it operates from July through until June to encompass the Indoor season. Major tasks taken on by the committee so far this year include the revision of the Indoor Committee Charter, the revision of the Indoor State League competition rules and the development of a State Team Officials Funding Policy and an Indoor Reserve Account Policy. A draft State Team Selection Policy is currently being finalised and is expected to be in place for 2006. The committee is also working on the establishment of an Under 16 State Indoor Championship to be held in January 2006 and a specific Indoor Presentation dinner is planned for early 2006. The committee has also identified a number of issues and has begun the budg-et process in preparation for hosting the 2008 National

Championships. The Indoor State League competition was reviewed following the 2004 season and it was decided that, to give our State teams the best preparation possible, the domestic competition should be completed prior to our Senior and Under 21 teams departing for Wollongong. A total of 18 club teams participated in this competition (9 men and 9 women) in two divisions with the Under 21 Men’s squad also playing in the Super Six competi-tion. In the 2004/05 National Indoor Hockey season, West-ern Australia fielded six State teams. The U/21 and Senior Men and Women competed in the National Championships held in Cairns in November 2004, whilst the U/18 Men and Women competed in the Na-tional Championships held in Canberra in January 2005. All the teams performed well and continued to uphold the proud tradition of State Hockey in Western Australia. Final results from the National Champion-ships:

Senior Men – National Champions Senior Women – 3rd U21 Men – National Champions U21 Women – 3rd U18 Men – 3rd U18 Women – 3rd

At the conclusion of the Senior and Under 21 Champi-onships, a number of Western Australian players were selected in National Teams: Women: Amanda Calton, Elisa Hammond, Rheannin Kelly, Fiona Young, Penne Yorke and Nicole Zomer; Men: Jason Black, Peter Chapman, Andrew Hunt, Paul Nicholls, George Watts, Graham Watts and Rohan Wil-son; Amanda Calton was also named Player of the Tourna-ment and Vice Captain of the Australian Team. State Indoor teams have benefited from the support of several very generous sponsors including Underwater Contracting Services, Golder Associates, Turfmaster, Rising Stars Travel, Atlas Sports and Gryphon. Hockey WA and the Indoor Committee will be assisting the South West Hockey Association to host the Nation-al Men’s and Women’s U/18 Indoor Championships, to

be held in Bunbury in January 2006. The South West Hockey Association is to be congratulated for stepping in at short notice and securing the rights to stage this championship. In closing, I would like to thank all of the Indoor Commit-tee members for the time and energy they have contrib-uted into the committee’s tasks so far this year and also to wish the Western Australian State Teams the best of luck in their upcoming Championships. John Christie

COUNTRY COMMITTEE The Country Committee for 2005 was Beverley Blake (Central Midlands), Marie Cross (Bunbury Women), Damian Della (Avon), Julie French (Geraldton), Walter Lord (Busselton), Jenny Pitman (Roe District Women), Barry Scott (Bunbury Men), Chris Scott (Bunbury Men), Rodney Thornton (Roe District Men), John Ward (East Avon) and Denise Willcock (Peel). I thank these people for their support towards country hockey in WA. One of the main obstacles for the country committee is distance, our last meeting was held by phone link up, which was a first for all concerned and seemed to work very well. The major events for 2005 were: • The CBH Group Men’s Country Championship where

23 Senior and nine Veterans teams contested over the June long weekend. A special acknowledgement must go to the Kimberley-Pilbara team who took out the Singapore Cup as the most consistent associa-tion.

• The CBH Group Women’s Country Championship where 39 Senior and 17 Veterans teams competed from 22-24 July. A special thank-you to the CBH Group for the provision of an extra marquee on the grass fields and also for their continued support of these events.

The men’s and women’s country teams travelled to Ber-ri, SA under the tuition of Steve Sexton (men) and Chris Scott (women) who were ably supported by their man-ager’s Gordon Summors and Beverley Blake. Under new eligibility rules for the Country Championships, the women finished a credible fourth whilst the men were defeated in the final to finish second. With finalizing of the Country Charter, rules, guidelines for fixturing, directions for managers & coaches of tour-ing sides the procedure must become easier so hopeful-ly other members will become interested in what hap-pens at country level. On a sad note, it must be noted the passing of Mr Max Reynolds who was a great worker and supporter of men’s country hockey for many years. To his family our sincere condolences.

Thank you to all of the Hockey WA staff for all your help over the year. Jan McKenzie

VETERAN’S COMMITTEE The committee this year comprised Anne Prior (Board Liaison) Mal Skinner, Catherine McFarlane, Johnson Orr, Bill Campbell, Maris Margetts, Tracey Hough, Lor-raine Browning, Barry Rutter, Nadine Richards (staff) and myself as convenor. The main work of the season was to consolidate the work done following the amalgamation of the men’s and women’s division the previous year and working to-wards standardising both competitions and the opera-tions of state sides. There is still quite a bit of work re-quired in this area and it will continue to be the main focus for the 2006 season. This year the Men’s division had 72 teams competing in the Saturday afternoon competition with age divisions ranging from Over 40 to Over 60. The midweek compe-tition continued to flourish with 11 teams competing. The Women’s division saw the expansion of their mid-week competition to 19 teams. On the state front the Men’s National Championships were conducted in Wollongong. Congratulations to the Over 50’s side being the National Champions in their division. Western Australia was also successful in se-curing the rights to host the 2006 Championships. The Women’s State sides competed in Melbourne and the Over 50’s team should also be congratulated on winning their division. Finally I would like to thank Nadine Richards for all her

as-

sistance during the season.

SPECIAL EVENTS COMMITTEE 2005 was a very interesting year for this committee with our major task being the unification of both women’s and men’s Hockey WA awards which kept the commit-tee occupied for a long period. Fortunately, the valua-ble experience and knowledge base of our committee enabled the presentation of all awards throughout the season to be completed in an effective and efficient manner. The other projects that the committee has had input into were Challenge Cup Day, Grand Final Day and the Goundrey Wines Hockey WA presentation dinner plus ideas for better promotion of top WA hockey. The committee would like to thank Alex Johnston from Hockey WA for his help during the year especially in regard to the organisation of the Goundrey Wines Hock-ey WA presentation dinner. It was an outstanding event and of the standard appropriate for recognising the achievements in hockey during 2005. A special thankyou to Cameron Scadding from the board and the ladies of the committee Angela Babb, Anne Fuhrmann and Shirley Leece. Jim Banks

2005 saw some important progress for women’s elite hockey in Western Australia. An elite squad of 19 athletes was selected with another 11 in the development squad. ELITE SQUAD

After 2004, when Emily Halliday was the sole Western Australian representative in the HOckey-roos, 2005 has seen four Western Australians in the senior team. Halliday continued her success at this level and was joined by Kobie McGurk while Sian Smithson and Kim Walker progressed from the National Development Squad into the senior team. Halliday and McGurk toured USA and Canada and finished the eight tests with six wins and two draws. I travelled with the Hockeyroos as one of the Assistant Coaches. Halliday, McGurk, Smith-

son and Walker also played in the test series against Korea in August. In October, Halliday and Walker helped the Hockeyroos win the Indira Gan-dhi Gold Cup in New Delhi. Halliday, McGurk and Walker have been selected in the Hockeyroos team for the 2005 Champions Trophy in Canberra. The NTC program continues to produce quality athletes at a junior level but after some lean years in terms of athletes making the transition into the senior team, this is changing. Fiona Boyce, Rhean-nin Kelly, Kate Hubble, Shelly Liddelow, Jayde Taylor, Kobie McGurk, Jemma Buckley and Kia Mansell were selected in the Australian Squad for the 2005 Junior World Cup with all but Buckley and Mansell being selected in the team. Western Australia’s U/15, U/18 and U/21 women’s teams finished first, third and second respectively at the 2005 National Championships. These re-sults further reinforce the strength of our Junior program but place greater expectations on the abil-

ity of the program to develop these athletes into senior national representatives. Moving from the Men’s to the Women’s program has been an interesting transition but I thank my predecessor, Kevin Knapp, for the excellent pro-gram I have inherited. Neil Hawgood

bution to the Kookaburras throughout the year jointly won him the 2004 Kookaburras Player of the Year award, which was announced during the AHL finals in April. The award was voted for by coach-ing staff and national selectors after each match to recognise the most consistent and outstanding performance throughout the year. It capped a re-markable year for Bevan, in which he played in 32 of the Kookaburras’ 39 matches, taking part in all except one of the tournaments for the year. Following the AHL, in which the SmokeFree WA Thundersticks finished an unlucky third, Bevan, Michael Boyce and Aaron Hopkins were named in the Australian squad and Jason Vuletich, Ben Bishop, Steven Boyce and Geoff Boyce were named in the Australian development squad. Due to a withdrawal, Ben was then elevated into the Australian squad. The Australian squad is working towards the Champions Trophy tournament in December, with smaller tournaments along the way. The develop-ment squad athletes joined an AIS tour to Asia in September. In June, the Kookaburras’ won the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup for the second consecutive year, defeat-ing Korea 4-3 in the grand final. Michael and Aaron were the only WAIS players on the team, both per-forming well throughout the tournament and adding to their ongoing selection prospects. Final touring team selections were made in June, with Bevan, Michael and Aaron making the cut to tour Europe from the start of August. However, Michael was then forced to withdraw because of injury and Ben was added as a late selection. Following the 2005 National Under-21 Hockey Championship in Perth in April, in which WA de-feated Victoria 3-2 in the grand final to take the title, Jonathon, Ian Burcher and Fergus Kavanagh were named in the team for the 8th Junior Men’s World Cup in The Netherlands, in June. Australia finished second. Western Australia also won the U/18 Men’s Nation-al Championship and the U/15 team finished sec-ond. After four years with the program, Head Coach Neil Hawgood left in January to take up the posi tion of head coach with the women’s program. Af-ter completing a coaching scholarship with the AIS hockey program during 2004, I took on the role of head coach and am working towards developing more players who can be identified to represent Australia. I was also Head Coach of the Smoke-

Free WA Thundersticks in the 2005 AHL. The WAIS Men’s Hockey Program is looking to Beijing to increase the number of athletes on the Olympic team and to maintain the current status of its Junior World Cup representatives. Following the national lead, the athletes will be undergoing a more stringent strength and conditioning program with strong focus on increasing the squad speed. The program will see some resource sharing with the AIS program and an increased athlete and coach involvement in both programs. An expan-sion of coaching resources will be sought in the attempt to have the numerous hockey Olympians living in Western Australia adding value and depth of knowledge to the WAIS program. Individual development of specialist skills will be undertaken, particularly in the area of penalty cor-ners. In contrast, a comprehensive goal keeping program will be implemented and overseen by tri-ple Olympian Damon Diletti. It will include some radical techniques, such as the use of lacrosse skills to improve goal keepers’ reaction times in saving penalty corners. A development squad, aimed at preparing the younger athletes for Junior World Cup selection, will begin focusing on athletes who will be able to play in the qualifying tournament and the Junior World Cup itself. A thorough program will be un-dertaken, blending hockey specialist coaching and strength and conditioning. Western Australia is performing well at Junior level and starting to see this success transfer to the na-tional teams, with increased representation in the Senior and U/21 teams. The challenge for the NTC program is to succeed in having as many of these junior athletes successfully make this transi-tion. Jason Duff

AUSTRALIAN HOCKEY LEAGUE SMOKEFREE WA DIAMONDS

The SmokeFree WA Diamonds finished the 2005 Australian Hockey League (AHL) as silver medal-lists, making the final for the second consecutive year. The SmokeFree WA Diamonds squad of 26 play-ers was selected in September 2004 by selectors Colin Brandis (Diamonds Coach & Chairperson), Kevin Knapp (NTC Coach - outgoing), Troy Kelly and Noel Morrison. Neil Hawgood replaced Kevin Knapp as a selector from October. From the squad a team of 20 players were selected in Janu-ary 2005 to represent the SmokeFree WA Dia-monds at the AHL season, which ran for six weeks over March and April. The pre-AHL program included a training and play-ing schedule that commenced in the new year with the inclusion of a camp at Club Capricorn, Yanchep. The team played several of practice matches, including three against the Japan Nation-al Team and games against a Presidents XI and the Hotspurs. The SmokeFree WA Diamonds AHL season re-sults included:

Adelaide Suns (home) – 2-1 win; 2-1 win NSW Arrows (away) – 2-2 (loss on strokes); 1-1 (loss on strokes) Queensland Scorchers (home) – 1-2 loss; 4-3 win Van Demons (away) – 5-1 win; 7-0 win

Finals Week (Canberra):

Victoria Vipers – 2-1 win NT Pearls – 7-0 win Canberra Lakers – 7-1 win Semi Final v Adelaide Suns 5-1 win Final v Queensland Scorchers 1-3 loss

At the completion of the 11 game home and away series, the SmokeFree WA Diamonds were two points clear on top of the table. The SmokeFree WA Diamonds played great, tough hockey to confidently dispose of the Ade-laide Suns in the semi final which put them in a great position for the Final against the Queensland Scorchers.

In the Final, the Queensland Scorchers jumped the SmokeFree WA Diamonds early and it took some time for them to gather their momentum to be com-petitive against a rampant Scorchers. Although the SmokeFree WA Diamonds took the game up to the Scorchers for the better part of the second half they were unable to break through and ended the game with a 1-3 loss. The SmokeFree WA Diamonds ability to back up from its 2004 AHL win to be the top team after the round series and to again make the Final provides great confidence in this team continuing to be a serious contender for the title for the ensuing years. The SmokeFree WA Diamonds were well led by Co-Captains Kim Walker and Emily Halliday and the team represented Hockey WA with distinction and pride on and off the field throughout the AHL season. Kim Walker was voted the SmokeFree WA Dia-monds Fairest & Best Player for 2005. Melissa Hall retired from the SmokeFree WA Dia-monds after the 2005 AHL, ending an impressive career for Western Australia. She deserves con-gratulations and thanks for the way she has repre-sented Western Australia having played in the na-tional league since 1994. The SmokeFree WA Diamonds had individual re-wards in Emily Halliday and Kobie McGurk being selected in the Hockeyroos Team and Sian Smith-son and Kim Walker being selected in the National Development Squad. Each player has since repre-sented the Hockeyroos in official international

games. From the SmokeFree WA Diamonds team Kobie

McGurk, Kia Mansell, Shelly Liddelow, Jayde Tay-lor, Rheannin Kelly, Kate Hubble and Jemma Buckley were selected in the Junior World Cup Squad. The SmokeFree WA Diamonds were proudly sup-ported by a large number of spectators for their home games against the Queensland Scorchers and the Adelaide Suns. The SmokeFree WA Diamonds officials including the Manager (Jocelyn Henly), Assistant Coaches (Neil Hawgood & Noel Morrison) and Physiothera-pist (Catherine McNee) represented Hockey WA in a professional and positive way in all activities as-sociated with the team. The team was represented by a 5 player Manage-ment Group which provided an important interface with the team officials and coaches. This method of team management provided a positive approach to implementing and improving the positive and professional culture of the team resulting in a great performance.

The positive approach to the SmokeFree WA Dia-monds AHL campaign by the Hockey WA admin-istration and Board was evident and this support was much appreciated by the team and officials. The Team contributed to the funding of the AHL program by conducting two successful coaching clinics for junior players and undertaking a fruitful Corporate Partner raffle. This not only provided funding but also built a positive profile for the play-ers and the team. Colin Brandis

AUSTRALIAN HOCKEY LEAGUE

SMOKEFREE WA THUNDERSTICKS

The SmokeFree WA Thundersticks performed re-markably well in the 2005 Australian Hockey League. The team’s preparation was plagued by injury and interruption due to national team and AIS team commitments. Fitness was also ques-tionable after the completion of what was a rigor-ous preseason, with some players obviously below their personal bests for that time of year.

A unique opportunity was presented with the loss of key players through injury and retirement from the previous season. In all, the SmokeFree WA Thundersticks faced the prospect of being without seven players (Tom Kavanagh, Bevan George, Scott Webster, Paul Gaudoin, Leon Martin, Steven Boyce and Tristram Woodhouse) that were instru-mental in the previous years second place result. Bevan George, Aaron Hopkins and Michael Boyce were appointed to the Leadership Group. With Bevan injured, Aaron and Michael took on the im-portant leadership responsibilities and performed with great credit. The first games reflected the fractured and disjoint-ed preparation with an under prepared team that struggled to a loss and an extra time win against a well organised Adelaide Hotshots. The following weekend the team faced the New South Wales Waratahs and were soundly beaten on a road trip that would rather be forgotten. Murray McIntyre returned to Perth without playing to attend the birth of his first child and Alistair Park replaced him in the line up. An imbalanced SmokeFree WA Thun-dersticks forced 26 corners for the weekend con-verting only one and losing both games. The third weekend saw Perth host competition leaders Queensland was the turning point for the Smoke-Free WA Thundersticks. Two good performances saw the team take four points from the weekend with an emphatic Sunday performance that result-ed in a win. The final weekend was again success-ful with two wins in hard fought encounters. The guys that had been thrust into the cauldron were finding their feet and had become very good con-tributors to the team. Their contributions turned the team performances into winning performances. The finals week in Brisbane offered many chal-lenges. The first game of the week against the

Lakers was ordinary and an extra time win was a fortunate result. Two more wins against the re-maining two opponents had the SmokeFree WA Thundersticks finishing in third place at the com-pletion of the minor rounds - an impressive perfor-mance given the team sat in seventh earlier in the tournament. The Semi Final was hard fought and the tenacity that had brought the SmokeFree WA Thunder-sticks into the finals was shining through. Only a controversial decision that could have taken the game into overtime stood in the way of the Smoke-Free WA Thundersticks again contesting the final. Unfortunately, the umpires ruled that the ball was not in the net when the siren went and that the si-ren officially ends the game. The score stayed at 3-4 allowing New South Wales to advance to the final that they eventually won. The SmokeFree WA Thundersticks emphatically won the play off for third 6-2 against Victoria end-ing what was an exciting AHL season considering the introduction of several new faces to the line up. In conclusion, the SmokeFree WA Thundersticks performed admirably and the scene is set for fur-ther development of players for national selection and ongoing success in the long term future. A new era is emerging with the retirement of familiar faces and consistent performers for the past ten years, Murray McIntyre, Guy Bolton and Chris Munro, thank you for all your efforts, you will be missed. I am grateful for the support from Damon Diletti and David Viner (Assistant Coaches), Martin Fer-rari (Manager) and Craig Wilson (Physiotherapist)

as well as Alison Burge and Alex Johnston from Hockey WA. Sponsors Healthway, Gryphon Hock-ey and Rising Stars Travel provided significant support that was crucial to the team’s participation in 2005.

Congratulations to Ben Bishop, Fairest and Best player for the SmokeFree WA Thundersticks for 2005. Prior to the 2005 AHL, Gordon ‘Dinga’ Bell lost his battle with cancer. Dinga was a former se-lector of the Thundersticks and one of the team’s most ardent supporters over many years. His loss was felt by the team and served as an inspiration to all players. His contribution will be remembered through a new, annual award – the Gordon ‘Dinga’ Bell Thundersticks Team Spirit Award. It will be presented to a player judged by the Coaching Staff to have made the most significant overall contribu-tion to the team. The inaugural winner in 2005 is Aaron Hopkins. Jason Duff

Photographs of the inaugural inductees are currently on display in the Champions’ Room at Perth Hockey Stadium and these will soon be relocated to the Perth Hockey Stadium bar. Photographs of the 2005 inductees will also be displayed. The bar will be renamed ‘The Champions’ Bar’ and a new group of Champion players will be inducted every five years.

Hockey WA is working on a special section of its website with detailed information about these Cham-pion players and this should be online during 2006.
