HEAD COACH MIKE GOODRICH’S THOUGHTS:“I think that off the field our team has gelled very well. On the field, we have starteda minimum of seven freshman or red-shirt freshman in the pre-season, so theteam is trying to get comfortable with one another. Everyone is eager to learn andarrived in great shape, so I think that going into the season we should be competi-tive. We’ll win our fair share of games, but with the schedule we have both inconference and out of conference, there will be some rough spots. How we re-spond to the rough spots will dictate how successful we are this season.”

“I firmly believe in this team. I think we have a very good team, and I think we havea legitimate chance to be a very competitive team in the conference. However, there are some very good teams in the SSC and no sure wins. They have to showup and play every game.”

2005 NSU WOMEN’S SOCCER MEDIA GUIDE

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is the organization throughwhich the nation’s colleges and universities speak and act on athletic matters atthe national level. It is a voluntary association of approximately 1,200 institutions, conferences, organizations and individuals devoted to the sound administration ofintercollegiate athletics.

Through the NCAA, member colleges consider any athletics problem that crossesregional or conference lines and has become national in character. The associa-tion strives to maintain intercollegiate athletics as an integral part of the educa-tional program and the athlete as an integral part of the student body. The NCAAalso stands for good conduct in intercollegiate athletics and serves as the colleges’national athletics accrediting agency.

The NCAA has grown dramatically in the past 50 years, with more than 600new members since 1950.

NCAA DIVISION IIDivision II institutions have to sponsor at least four sports for men and four forwomen, with two team sports for each gender, and each playing season repre-sented by each gender. There are contest and participant minimums for each sport,as well as scheduling criteria—football and men’s and women’s basketball teamsmust play at least 50 percent of their games against Division II or I-A or I-AA opponents.

For sports other than football and basketball, there are no scheduling requirements. There are no attendance requirements or arena game requirements for basketball. There are maximum financial aid awards for each sport that a Division II schoolmust not exceed. Division II teams usually feature a number of local or in-statestudent-athletes. Many Division II student-athletes pay for school through a combi-nation of scholarship money, grants, student loans and employment earnings. Divi-sion II athletics programs are financed in the institution’s budget like other aca-demic departments on campus. Traditional rivalries with regional institutions domi-nate schedules of many Division II athletics programs.

U

RAY FERRERO, JR., J.D.PRESIDENT, NOVA SOUTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY

The 2004–05 school year marked several milestones for Nova SoutheasternUniversity. The Department of Athletics had another extremely successful year onthe fields, courts and water, while competing in its third year as a member of theNCAA. NSU also finished its final year of provisional membership status in theSunshine State Conference, which is one of the most respected conferences, both academically and athletically, in the country. The NSU women’s rowing teamtook part in the NCAA Division II Rowing Championships for the second time inprogram history, finishing third in the nation overall. The men’s golf team cap-tured their first Sunshine State Conference Championship ever in April 2005.

In fall 2004, construction began for the new 366,000-square-foot University Center. This multiuse facility will be the centerpiece of NSU’s 300-acre main campus and

will serve as the home to our sports teams. The 5,500-seat convocation center/sports arena at the UniversityCenter will be the second largest of its kind in Broward County and will allow us to host special events, concertsand lectures, as well as local, national and international conferences. It will redefine the university’s relationshipwith its students, administration, faculty and staff members, and the entire surrounding community.

The University Center, which is on track to be completed in May 2006, will also create a focal point forstudent life at NSU. The facility will serve as the new home to the university’s student development andactivities offices, career services, the student information center, card office, The Flight Deck Lounge, radiostation and volunteer center. Its design incorporates a state-of-the-art health and fitness club, racquetballand squash courts, a gymnasium and a rock-climbing wall.

Our talented student-athletes balance NSU’srigorous academic demands with the vigorousenvironment of athletic training and competi-tion. They embody the values of leadership, lifelong learning, and service to the commu-nity. The University Center will provide the stu-dent-athletes with the training facilities andspace to continue to enhance these values.

Since I began my tenure as president of NovaSoutheastern University eight years ago, Ihave remained steadfast in my goal: to con-tinue to develop and refine quality educationprograms and prepare students for leadershippositions and emerging challenges in the 21stcentury. Today, as the eighth largest indepen-dent, not-for-profit university in the UnitedStates, we are fulfilling that mission.

The student-athletes of Nova Southeastern University have shown great success in the classroom as well. The women’s golf team posted the highest GPA of all NSU teams for the 2004–05 school year with a 3.5,while men’s soccer and women’s tennis finished with a combined 3.4 for the year. More then 90 student-athletes were named to the honor court, while 25 student-athletes were nominated for Academic All-Ameri-can consideration. In addition, the overall grade point average for NSU student-athletes has been 3.0 orhigher for the past five years.

Everyone associated with this university can take pride in the excellence we have achieved thus far, andlook forward to an exciting future full of milestones. We will continue to seek and implement ways to betterourselves every day. And we will aim to surpass even our own high standards of excellence in academics, research, technology, athletics and community service.

Thank you for your ongoing support of Nova Southeastern University.Sincerely,Ray Ferrero, Jr.President, Nova Southeastern University

2005 NSU WOMEN’S SOCCER MEDIA GUIDENOVA SOUTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY OVERVIEW1960–1970When the first class of 17 graduate students enrolled inNova University of Advanced Technology on Monday, Sep-tember 25, 1967, the campus in Davie, Fla., still lookedmore like the abandoned naval airfield it had once beenthan like the campus of what aspired to be “the MIT of theSouth.” Only the Rosenthal Building had been completed. The shell of the Parker Building was under construction. The rest of the campus was barren, acre after acre of weedsand sand relieved here and there by some of the originaltarmac.

With only one permanent building ready for occupancy onthe 300-acre campus, after the formalities of registrationand orientation, faculty members and students went toRolling Hills Country Club for lunch. They then met ingroups, based upon their areas of specialization. Scienceeducation students went back to Rosenthal; physics andchemistry students went to the university’s temporary labo-ratories in the 400 block of East Las Olas Boulevard; andoceanography students went to the houseboat laborato-ries at Southeast 15th Street.

Chartered by the state of Florida on December 4, 1964, by opening day 1967, Nova Univer-sity boasted assets, contributions and pledges of $10 million. A total of $125,000 had beenraised and paid to the federal government as an installment on what became the university’s300-acre campus. James Farquhar, the university’s first chairman of the board, donated 100acres adjacent to the campus—a gift valued in excess of $500,000. Mr. and Mrs. W.C. Matherand the Bailey Foundation donated a 100-acre parcel of land in Hollywood valued at $400,000.Ten acres at Port Everglades for the oceanographic laboratory were deeded to the universityby the Broward County Commission.

The university represented a great hope for higher education in South Florida: an institutionthat would keep the best and the brightest at home and attract the most promising facultymembers and students from around the country to a great seat of learning in a rapidly devel-oping region of the United States. By stressing the importance of science and technology, itwould provide the kind of leadership that was needed to help bring the United States into acompetitive position in the conquest of space, the new frontier of the 1960s. Nova Universitywould be in a position to provide fresh approaches to the process of teaching, learning anddoing research. Nova could also serve as a catalyst in developing and implementing educa-tional models that could be applied first to its neighboring schools, then nationwide.

University officials knew that from the opening day, all eyes would be focused on the faculty, the students and the campus. More time, energy and money had probably been invested inthe first 17 students than had been spent on any other students in the United States. Theyhad been selected from 250 applicants from all over the country. They were all doctoralstudents and had been given free tuition, as well as stipends of up to $5,000 for living ex-penses. On top of that, it took 68 staff members, 17 faculty members and an annual budgetof $1.7 million to run the university that year.

1970–1985In 1970, Nova University was given candidate status, and was later accredited (1971) by theSouthern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). Students continued to enroll andfaculty members taught and engaged in research.

In 1969, Nova University’s 300-acrecampus in Davie, Fla., looked more likethe abandoned naval airfield it hadonce been.

2005 NSU WOMEN’S SOCCER MEDIA GUIDEThe economic model upon which the university was established committed it to an on-going need for outside funding, research grants and private donations. On June 23,1970, the board of trustees voted to enter into a federation with the New York Institute ofTechnology. Alexander Schure, president of NYIT, became chancellor of Nova Univer-sity. Abraham S. Fischler became president. The university charter was amended and“of Advanced Technology” was dropped from its corporate name.

During the 15 years of the federation, the whole concept of Nova’s student body, pro-grams and campus changed. In addition to the students on the Davie campus, the uni-versity found student markets where it could, looking for ways to bring the campus to thestudent.

The university developed new programs and expanded beyond the limits of its campusand South Florida. Across the country, hundreds of adult, working professionals in schoolsystems, government agencies and businesses were now able to earn advanced de-grees without quitting their jobs and becoming full-time students. Few colleges and uni-versities offered evening and weekend programs that fit their schedules. Nova had clearlyfound a market niche.

On campus, undergraduate evening programs began for adults, while the law schoolwas opened in 1974. A host of master’s degree programs in business, psychology andeducation continued to be developed.

In 1976, the university received a $16-million gift from the estate of Leo Goodwin Sr.,and began extensive campus and program expansion. Shortly after this, NSU dissolvedits relationship with NYIT and began to create a board of trustees filled by South Floridacommunity leaders, putting the stewardship of Nova back in the hands of its own localboard.

1985 to PresentThe Nova University that emerged in 1985 was committed to incorporating new educa-tional technologies, made possible by computers and telecommunications, into the teach-ing and learning process and into its delivery of education. A network of students onlineat their computers redefined what a classroom is. Communicating across time zones, linked to a professor who can be on campus or anywhere, students across the UnitedStates and even at international locations turn one-dimensional computer screens intofields for academic discussion.

In 1989, celebrating its 25th year, Nova University was enrolling more than 8,000 stu-dents and had nearly 25,000 graduates, with revenues of nearly $70 million. Over thenext five years, three new buildings were constructed and a campus-wide beautificationcampaign added landscaping that greatly changed the look of the campus.

In 1994, Nova University merged with Southeastern University of the Health Sciences toform Nova Southeastern University (NSU), adding the Colleges of Osteopathic Medi-cine, Pharmacy, Optometry and Allied Health to the university. The university continuedits expansion of building projects and added new academic, clinical and communityservice programs.

By 1999, at the 35th anniversary, the university was enjoying an era of sustained growth, facilitated by a healthy infusion of endowment funds and a nearly 1,000-student in-crease in enrollment between fall 1998 and fall 1999. NSU’s enrollment had increased
