During office hours you are expected to be in the office. If you are on campus running an errand orare leaving for lunch simply tell someone. It is only common courtesy to let your co-workers knowwhere you are in case of an emergency or if someone (one of your players) needs you. Time off will

always granted for personal reasons as long as you notify the Head Coach ahead of time.

B.  DRESS

Academic School Year: Business casual. Collared shirt, dress pants (Khakis, Dockers, etc.).

Recruiting Functions: Business formal. Suit, shirt & tie. Dress pants with a collared shirt, tieand a sweater vest are acceptable.

Practice Field: Tiffin University coaching gear. Do not wear other colors.

Game Field: Tiffin University coaching gear as decided upon by the staff.

Summer: Casual. Golf shirt and casual pants.

C. LANGUAGE

Speak like the educated, intelligent person that you are. Try to avoid cursing and foul language in theoffice, in the meeting rooms, and on the field. When you feel that cursing is necessary, keep it to aminimum.

D. CONDUCT

Treat all student athletes, co-workers, students, Tiffin University staff members, administrators, themedia and the general public with respect. Always portray a positive image about Tiffin UniversityFootball. If you don’t have anything good to say about someone, don’t say anything at all.

Do not abuse the student-assistant coaches. Although they may often be called upon to performmenial duties, they too should be treated respectfully.

Habitual fraternization with the student-athletes is not advised. An occasional social experience withstudent-athletes is acceptable.

If you have a problem with a student-athlete or a co-worker, you are expected to address the problemby sitting down with that individual and calmly discussing the situation while seeking to reach aresolution interdependently. If the problem persists please notify the Head Coach.

E. MEETINGS

Be early for meetings. If you have a problem or are going to be late please call ahead. Show respectand courtesy to all members of our coaching staff when presenting a point of view.

Meetings will usually be structured and organized, however each staff member should be prepared toreport on any aspect of his duties at any meeting.

When given an assignment, please carry it out as soon as possible with thoroughness and pride, as it isa reflection of you, the program and the Head Coach.

F. DISCIPLINE

It is expected that all student-athletes will conform to the team rules. Position coaches will beresponsible for enforcing team rules for their position. Special attention should be paid to consistencyand timeliness. That is we should treat all similar situations similarly and immediately.Coaches will be responsible for disciplining players when an infraction occurs, do not look the otherway, correct bad behavior. In addition, position coaches will be responsible for enforcing disciplinaryactions (running, etc.). The Head Coach will decide what course of action will be followed. It isstrongly recommended that Coaches maintain a discipline file on student-athletes with discipline

problems.

G. DIVERSITY

Diversity is right. It is good and benefits all. No prejudice will ever be tolerated.

We need our coaches to be positive and enthusiastic. Our players will give us what we expect if weare positive in our approach. Set high expectations and goals for your position, draw the line on whatis or isn’t acceptable. Be consistent and your players will perform up to those expectations.

Tiffin University Football Player Guidelines

1. I will always do what is best for the team in all of my actions.

BLACKWATCH

The Black Watch is the oldest Highland Regiment of the British Army. The Black Watch,

although a regiment of the British Army, derives its origins from the Highlands of Scotland.After an uprising in 1715, the Scottish government found the need to enforce stricter policing of the Highlands and Lowlands.

From the time they were raised, these regiments became known as the Black Watch in referenceto the darkly colored uniforms they wore. These warriors were known for their skill with whichthey wielded their swords and axes. The Black Watch is one of the most honored and symbolicregiments in the world.

Their traditions and bravery have made them one of the most revered battle units in combathistory. The Black Watch regiment has served gallantly in the North American and NapoleonicWars as well as in World Wars I and II. The regiment has earned 96 battle honors. This includesthe famous battles of Waterloo, Dunkirk and D-Day.

Though not the military, the TU football Black Watch members possess the same characteristics

as the highly respected regiment. These members are skilled. Each knows his position very well. Black Watch members are honored and symbolic to fellow teammates. These members representTU football on and off the field. Each member is a role model.

To be a part of the Black Watch of Tiffin University is one of the highest honors one can receivein our program. The Black Watch signifies that its members have paid the ultimate price to ourprogram. They are the elite warriors and look forward to the toughest battles.

Membership is not automatic. The Black Watch regulates the affiliation, conduct and behavior of its members. To earn membership into the Black Watch consistency is an important factor. As amember of the Black Watch you have answered the call when needed, with high a standard of effort, performance, conduct and program loyalty. Seniors are not automatically added to the

 Black Watch. A senior’s membership maybe bestowed emeritus to the at large membership of the Black Watch. They will have all the privileges of  Black Watch but cannot hold rank in thegroup. The active membership will be comprised of those who have earned Black Watch recognition in eight of the eleven games played for each season. These members will hold rank and set the agenda for the group. When membership is conferred, you have not only earned thetrust of your coaches. You have also earned the trust and respect of the team. This is a higherstandard and much will be expected of you when you wear the colors and insignia of the Black

Watch into battle.

as long as it is sufficient for a win, or a Defense that allows opponentto one TD, as long as it sufficient for a win.

D.  Loss of Membership:1.  Being responsible for a fumble, pass interception, penalty, missed

tackle, missed assignment, or other circumstance which is the turningpoint of a game.

2.  Lack of 100% hustle in practice or games.3.  Loss of temper or unsportsmanlike conduct.4.  Missing class, meeting, practice or not being prompt.5.  Poor performance for the entire game.

INTRODUCTION TO THE DRAGON FOOTBALL FAMILY POLICIES,

PROCEDURES AND REGULATIONS

Values

Several principles guide this program. They are based on the values and beliefs that the institution,coaching staff, and players use to guide our behavior. It is important that all team membersunderstand and adhere to the values and principles that our program stands for.

These values can be easily remembered by the acronym PRIDE. By adhering to the team values andguiding principles we will all have PRIDE in ourselves, our program, and Tiffin University.

P Persistence

All men face hills and valleys, both good times and bad. Men that achieve greatness are thosethat persist, the ones that have a “never say die” attitude and will not quit. Your character willbe revealed when you are presented with adverse circumstances. Carry with you an undyingwill to be successful and you will persist.

R Respect

Treat others as you would expect to be treated. Treat your teammates, coaches, support staff,fellow students, professors, TU employees, and members of the Tiffin community withrespect. Respect other peoples’ possessions, thoughts and feelings.

I Integrity

Integrity means doing what you say you are going to do. Integrity also demandshonesty, loyalty, and doing the right thing. When a man has integrity his actions arecongruent with his words and the image that he portrays. Most of all, integrity istested when no one is watching. Be a man of integrity.

D Discipline

Discipline is the single most important attribute of a successful person, and asuccessful team. Discipline entails doing what you are supposed to do especiallywhen you don’t want to do it. Discipline is also making sacrifices and delayingpersonal gratification. Most importantly discipline is self-control.

E Effort

Your effort is the one of the few things that you can control, and all that anyone can ask of youis that you try your best. Put forth your best effort in meetings, on the practice field, and onthe game field. It is not an unreasonable expectation that you try your best.

PERSONAL CONDUCT GUIDELINES

1.  Because you are an athlete, many people (particularly young people) look you up to you. Justifythe pedestal they place you on.

2.  Have PRIDE in yourself. Be selective where you go, what you do and what you say!

3.  Be polite and courteous to all persons who are trying to help you and support our program.Especially those persons working in the dining hall, financial aid office, and most of all yourprofessors. Your conduct on and off campus is well observed, as you are a football player.Project the image of a gentleman.

4.  Be well groomed, neat and clean. This applies on and off campus.

5.  Never discuss the team, the physical condition of the team members, planned strategy, etc. withanyone. You may inadvertently give information that would help our opponents and hurt ourchances to win.

6.  The use of profanity, cussing and swearing is the effort of a weak person trying to express himself forcibly.

7.  Player-Coach relationship problem? Sit down and talk about it in a calm, relaxed and controlledmanner with that person. If that doesn’t work talk about it with your Position Coach, RecruitingCoach, Captains, Black Watch, Coach Cole.

8.  Coaches’ Phones – can call local only. NCAA Violation!

9.  Avoid the use of alcohol. It will inhibit your performance.

10. There will be no sympathy for drug users of any sort. Any discovered will stop or be eliminatedfrom the program. The football program will adhere to Tiffin University drug abuse policy.

11. Baseball caps are not permitted to be worn in meeting rooms or any other TU Football functions.

12. You are not to be in any Bars in Tiffin during the season.

INJURIES AND TRAINING ROOM 

TIFFIN UNIVERSITY DRAGON FOOTBALLPOLICY ON ATHLETIC INJURIES, ILLNESSES, AND MEDICAL CARE

1.  INSURANCE: The Tiffin University Athletic Injury Insurance policy will cover the expenses of athletic injuries directly related to intercollegiate competition, practice or workouts above andbeyond $500.00 per injury. The expense for the first $500.00 of medical expenses for each injurymust be absorbed by the student athlete’s private health insurance carrier or through the purchaseof a Tiffin University student insurance policy.

2.  PHYSICAL EXAMINATION: Every student-athlete must have a physical examination to qualifyfor intercollegiate athletic competition. The examination is to be completed by a qualifiedphysician. Freshman and upperclassmen that have not previously entered varsity competition atTiffin University must submit a current (taken within the past year) university physical to theHead Athletic Trainer to gain admittance to the athletic program. The head athletic trainer willscreen all incoming candidates’ physicals and the team physician will examine any irregularities

before the candidate is accepted into the athletic program.

Students who have not filed a current physical form with the Head Trainer will not be permitted toparticipate in intercollegiate athletics. Should the student do so, the Athletic Department will notassume responsibility for their treatment.

3.  INJURY OR ILLNESS: The student-athlete is responsible to report to a member of the athletictraining staff all injuries and illnesses as soon as possible. The Head Athletic Trainer will makethe necessary medical referral as indicated. In the event of an emergency due to an athletic injuryor illness, the athlete will be transported by the appropriate method to a pre-arranged hospital. Theathlete should not seek medical attention for an athletic injury or illness without priorauthorization from the Head Athletic Trainer, except in case of emergency.

4.  REFERRAL TO TEAM PHYSICIAN: If, in the opinion of the Head Athletic Trainer, an athleteshould be referred to a physician, the Head Athletic Trainer, will make an appointment with aphysician.

REFERRAL TO MEDICAL SPECIALIST: If, in the opinion of the physician, an athlete shouldbe referred to a medical specialist, team physician will make an appointment with the medicalspecialist.

THE ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT SHALL NOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY CHARGESINCURRED DUE TO EXAMINATION AND/OR TREATMENT IF THESE PROCEDURESARE NOT FOLLOWED!

5.  DENTAL CARE: The Athletic Department shall be responsible for the care of injury to themouth and teeth incurred while participating in an official practice session or game. In thosesports where protective devices (mouth pieces) are mandatory and provided for use in officialpractice sessions and games, the Athletic Department will assume responsibility for care only if the device is worn by the student-athlete. Dental care not directly related to an athletic injury shall

be the responsibility of the student-athlete.

6.  TREATMENT: The training room hours will be posted with each sport season. Treatment will beavailable to all athletes, but those in season will receive priority. Failure of an injured athlete tokeep treatment appointments will be interpreted as the athlete’s unwillingness to cooperate withthe athletic medical staff for early return to competition. The head coach will be informed of anathlete who fails to keep scheduled appointments.

7.  PRACTICE OR GAME PARTICIPATION FOR AN INJURED OR ILL ATHLETE:Decisions on the availability of an athlete for practice or game competition shall be the soleresponsibility of the Head Athletic Trainer.

8.  REPLACEMENT OF CORRECTIVE EQUIPMENT FOR STUDENT-ATHLETES WITHVISION, HEARING AND ORAL DEFECTS: All athletes with disabilities must report saiddisabilities to the Head Athletic Trainer prior to entering the athletic program. Failure to reportthese disabilities will result in the student-athlete assuming full liability for any injuries incurreddue to prior disabilities.

All students participating in the sports of football, volleyball, basketball, baseball, and softballwith vision problems must wear contact lenses or glasses with approved safety lens and frames.

The athlete is responsible for reporting the loss of the damage to corrective equipment to amember of the athletic training staff on occurrence. The athletic Department will assist in thearrangement for repair or replacement of corrective equipment.

9.  OUT-OF-SEASON INJURY OR ILLNESS: The Athletic Department shall not assumeresponsibility for care of injuries or illnesses incurred when the student athlete is not activelyengaged in a formal, official game or practice during a competitive season, or a conditioningprogram in preparation for intercollegiate competition.

10. The athlete is responsible for submitting each invoice resulting from medical care of an athleticinjury or illness to his own insurance carrier. This procedure must be followed for each athleticinjury.

TRAINING ROOM RULES

1.  Shorts or other appropriate clothing is to be worn when being treated; no nudity is allowed.

2.  The use of tobacco products is prohibited.

3.  No cleated shoes are allowed in the training room.

4.  Treatments are to be administered by the trainers, not the athletes.

5.  No shoes are allowed on the tables.

6.  No yelling, horseplay or profanities will be tolerated.

7.  Treatments are given after the athlete has showered post practice, except in emergency cases, andprior to practice. At no time will treatment be given during meetings or practice.

8.  No equipment or supplies are to leave the training room without permission of the head trainer.

9.  All athletes must sign out after receiving treatment.

TRAINER DUTIES FOR FALL CAMP

1.  Evaluate injury status pre-camp. Advise staff of any special situations.

2.  The on-field evaluation of players as to the degree of: injury, heat, and humidity, and practicetempo.

3.  Communicate the status of players post practice AM/PM and each morning, so staff is aware of aplayer’s status. No contact, limited, tolerance, out, etc.

4.  Provide treatment for injured players when time is available or prescribed AM, PM and evenings.

5.  Weight chart administration daily.

6.  Participation chart administration.

7.  Diet evaluation and recommendations.

8.  We have the finest trainers in America – use their expertise and willingness to keep you on thefield!

EQUIPMENT 

1.  ALL equipment used in football is the property of TU. A player uses football equipment bypermission only.

2.  T-Shirts/Shorts and Sweats will be given to the players at the conclusion of the season. They arenot to be altered or cut until that time.

3.  Wear the appropriate equipment as prescribed daily by the coaching staff. Variations are:

a)  Sweats – sweat pants and sweat shirt

b)  Helmets – helmet, t-shirts/shorts, practice jersey

c)  Shells – everything but pants and knee pads, shorts should be worn over girdle

d)  Full Gear - everything

4.  Each player who is issued football equipment assumes the responsibility (pride) of that equipment.

a)  To see that is kept clean and in good repair.

b)  That it is not lost or stolen.

c)  That, at the end of its usage, the equipment is returned to the equipment room clean.

d)  Failure to return equipment, whether lost, stolen, or otherwise, will result in the payment of afine to cover the loss of the gear. Failure to pay the fine will result in the withholding of grades.

5.  After the initial issue of gear, new gear will be issued on an exchange basis – old for new.

6.  After being fitted with your equipment do not change or alter it without the permission of the headequipment manager or the trainer. Do not cut or alter your equipment.

7.  Check your helmet daily to ensure that all screws and fasteners are secure.

8.  Wear your mouthpiece every practice.

9.  Towels will be issued to each player. Clean towels will be issued on an exchange basis only.

10. Players are not allowed in the equipment room.

11. You are provided the nice equipment and gear. It is up to you to take care of the equipmentissued. Make sure your equipment fits properly. If it does not, see the equipment manager.

12.  If you need anything, just ask.

13. Thievery will not be tolerated.

LOCKER ROOM

We will be spending a great deal of time in the locker room during the season. We should take pridein keeping it as clean and sanitary as possible.

LOCKER ROOM GUIDELINES

1.  Football cleats are to be taken off outside. Cleats are not allowed in the building.

2.  Hang all equipment in locker properly so it can dry.

3.  All cleats shall be placed in the locker, not on the floor.

4.  Shoulder pads are the only equipment that may be placed on top of the locker. It is important toproperly dry shoulder pads for sanitary reasons.

5.  Do not throw tape or trash on the floor. Trashcans are provided for this.

6.  No horseplay in locker room or in the showers. Watch your language.

7.  Turn off showers when you are done using them.

8.  Remove dirt and mud from shoes outside the locker room.

9.  Make sure your locker is locked!

10. No visitors are allowed in the locker room (except for Family after the game).

11. Respect belongings of one another. Do not “borrow” a teammate's gear or other personalbelongings without his permission.

12. Absolutely no players in the equipment room!!! A coach or equipment manager must accompanyyou. No exceptions.

LIFTING AND WEIGHT ROOM 

1.  Enter the weight room mentally and physically prepared to train.

2.  If injured, student-athlete must notify the Head Trainer and Coach Smith immediately so that thetraining program can be modified.

3.  Changes in strength program must be approved by Coach Smith.

4.  Use appropriate spotters at all times.

5.  No headphones, walk-mans, etc. worn weight room.

6.  Clean up after yourselves. Place the weights back on the appropriate weight trees for storage.

7.  Do not wear excessive amounts of jewelry in the weight room. It may damage equipment andthere is a potential for injury to you.

8.  You are to be present at your scheduled weight lifting session. Emergency schedule changes canonly arranged by the student-athlete personally notifying Coach Smith about the problem.

9.  Proper attire must be worn. This includes shirt, shorts and appropriate shoes. No hats.

10. Tardiness and Absentee Policy:When a player is tardy or absent from a weight lifting session he will be punished by Coach

Smith. Possible outcomes include suspension and dismissal.

WARM-UP, FLEXIBILITY AND CONDITIONING

1.  Flex at practice will be done either individually or by group

PRACTICE GUIDELINES 

1.  We expect a serious, at attention attitude on the field. I N T E N S I T Y!!

2.  Every player will wear the prescribed uniform and there will be no exceptions. The helmet will beworn or carried at all times. NEAVER LEAVE YOUR HELMET ON THE GROUND.

3.  Always jog from one group to another – NO WALKING.

4.  Resting position is on one knee; again keep your helmet in your hand or keep it on.

5.  No one leaves the practice field unless the Head Coach or your Position Coach gives permission.

6.  If injured, report to position coach, then to trainer.

7.  CONCENTRATION IN PRACTICE is a key to winning.

8.  Have respect for your teammates – help each other. Great teammates “coach” one another!

9.  If beat out for your position, don’t sulk – work harder and win the job back!

10. Conditioning - hands behind line and touch lines- Moaners call it “have to”. Winners make it a “want to”.- cadence

11. Scout Team - understand your role, make the starters better, work hard- get better yourself - make our TEAM BETTER!

12. Know and understand what the tempo is for each practice and drills.

-  Buzz: Tap off on ball carriers. Do not push people to the ground. Usually usedwhen team is in “shells” or helmets only.

-  Thud: Wrap up ball carriers, stay high on all blocks. Stay on your feet and donot take ball carriers to the ground. Used when in “shells” or full gear.

-  Full Go: Block and tackle full go. Take ball carriers to the ground. Do not usechop blocks or crack back blocks unless defense knows that it is coming.

13. Do not wear jewelry to practice. It is for the safety of you and your teammates. Do not hand it toyour coach, he has more important things to do than to worry about your jewelry.

GAME DAY GUIDELINES

PLAYER CONDUCT AT GAME TIME

1.  The pre-game atmosphere in the locker room is a time to continue your focus on your plan to helpus win. You cannot be a distraction to others. No “horseplay” or loud talking in the locker room.Talk softly and be thinking about the game.

2.  Our “charge” onto the field at the beginning of the game and at halftime is a new tradition. Thosein back close ranks and stay with us. Do not saunter out. Show your intensity.

3.  All players should stand along the boundary line during each kick-off. Shout encouragement toyour teammates. Sideline organization and discipline is essential.

4.  Every player should wear his helmet or have it in his hand at all times. Be ready to go into thegame at a second’s notice. Do not throw your helmet on the ground in disgust at any time.

5.  Watch the player playing your position. Learn from observation.

6.  RUN ON and OFF the field, NEVER WALK. Never sit or lie down during a time out.

7.  BE COURTEOUS TO ALL OFFICIALS. Only Coach Cole and designated coaches and captainsspeak to officials. Address them as “Sir”.

8.  Be sure you have on the official N.C.A.A. equipment. Keep your mouthpiece in your mouth.

9.  No talking in the huddle.

10. At half time get all equipment repairs, etc., over with immediately and then quietly wait for yourcoaches to meet with you.

11. DON’T TALK TO OPPONENTS DURING THE GAME. Come to play. Win the game, not the

argument.

12. Demonstrate sportsmanship, not intimidation. Bring GLORY to the team, not to self.

13. Players should rush to congratulate a teammate who has made a “big” play. Enthusiasm iscontagious. Pump us up.

14. Do not fight back! Do not attempt to break up a fight.

Be sharp in everything you do. Remember we have been working for months, weeks, and days forthis game that takes only sixty minutes. A sharp team will snap out of the huddle and run up to theline of scrimmage every play.

Our sideline has become over-run with people; therefore, it must once again become a privilege andnot a right to be there. We will be instituting several measures to address this. Be sure you earn theprivilege to be there!

1.  PERMISSIBLE PROCEDURES

16.2.1.1  INSTITUTIONAL CONTEST IN THE STUDENT-ATHLETE’S SPORT.An institution may provide four complimentary admissions per home or away contest toa student-athlete in the sport in which the individual participates (either practices orcompetes), regardless of whether the student-athlete competes in the contest. 

16.2.1.2 ISSUANCE PROCEDURES. Complimentary tickets shall be distributed only to personsdesignated by the student-athlete who have identified themselves and signed a receipttherefor.

2.  NON PERMISSIBLE PROCEDURES 

16.2.2.1  SALE OF COMPLIMENTARY ADMISSIONS. A student-athlete may not receivepayment from any source for his or her complimentary admissions and may notexchange or assign them for any item of value.

16.2.2.2  PAYMENT TO A THIRD PARTY. Individuals designated by the student-athlete toreceive complimentary admissions are not permitted to receive any type of payment forthese admissions or to exchange or assign them for any type of value. Receipt of payment for complimentary admissions by such designated individuals is prohibited andconsidered an extra benefit not available to the general student body, which would renderthe student-athlete ineligible for participation in intercollegiate athletics.

FOOTBALL PLAYER COMP TICKETS PROCEDURE

1.  The sign-up sheet will be available beginning on Wednesday morning. Sign up duringthe week must be completed by Friday at 6:00 p.m. Coach Guess is in charge and youmust see him for any ticket information. No changes or additions can be made afterthese deadlines unless signed for by Coach Cole.

2.  Players will receive four (4) comp tickets for each home game. Please be careful to signyour name and clearly print the names of those who are to receive the tickets in order toavoid confusion at the gate on game day. If print is illegible, comp tickets will not beprocessed.

3.  For home games, tickets will be distributed at the pass gate of the home contest.

4.  Individuals picking up comp tickets must show proper identification (Driver’s License,Student I.D., etc) and sign for the tickets.

5.  No hard tickets will be issued. A stub will be given to the individual for entrance to theStadium and they must immediately enter the Stadium.

NOTE: Additional season tickets may be acquired for parents and friends of the DragonFootball Family by becoming a member of the Dragon Football Association.

As a DFA member, you family or friends are given two (2) or four (4) seasontickets to home football contests, based on what level of the DFA they join.

TEAM TRAVEL RULES AND REGULATIONS 

TU Dragons – meaning and believing in CLASS – intelligence, physical appearance and honesty willpresent this CLASS IMAGE on the road as we travel for games.

DRESS

1.  Wear your TU Adidas polo shirt, TU Adidas running suit, running shoes, and TU issued hat.A.  Be well groomed. Clean-shaven, etc.B.  Do not wear bandanas or excessive amounts of jewelry.

ITINERARY:

Keep your travel itinerary with you at all times – be early for all obligations.

TEAM MEAL

1.  Sit with your coach or in your assigned area.

2.  Talk is to be a conversational tone. Do Not Speak Loud.

3.  Have a good meal, but do not over do it. Eat what you take.

BUS TRAVEL

1.  The bus will leave on time. You should be at the departure location 15 minutes prior to scheduleddeparture.

2.  The first two rows behind the bus driver is reserved for the Coaches.

3.  Keep the noise on the bus to a minimum, conversational tone.

4.  When you leave the bus, make sure all of your belongings are with you.

5.  Do not leave garbage on the bus.

6.  Headphones allowable – reasonable volume.

7.  All players are to travel to and from the games with the squad. If you would like to travel homewith a member of your immediate family, your family member must see Coach Walendzak priorto the departure.

7.  Do not diminish your character by stealing anything form the hotel. Your character cannot bestolen. YOU can only give it away.

Traveling as a member of the TU Football Family is a privilege. Wherever you are, you must

remember that not only do you represent yourself, but our football program, our institution and yourfamily as well. Act accordingly.

FIVE BUILDING BLOCKS OF SUCCESS 

Over the years, college football has evolved from the now outlawed “flying wedge” kick-off return,the “Single Wing” offensive formation and the “Straight 50” defense to the “Double Wall Return”, the“West Coast Offense” and “Zone Blitzes” and back again. Also, players have changed from two-wayall around players to run down only backs and pass rush specialists. However, there are a few thingsthat haven’t changed in over 100 years of college football. They are and forever will be the buildingblocks of success.

The building blocks are:

BLOCKING AND TACKLINGThe team that executes their blocking assignment the best and tackles the ball carrierthe best usually wins.

TURNOVERSThe team that has the best ball security and creates the most turnovers almost alwayswins.

PENALTIESThe team that has fewest penalties and doesn’t hurt itself has a much better chance of winning.

SPECIAL TEAMSThe team that wins the field position battle via a good kicking game puts itself in agreat position to win.

BIG PLAYSThe team that makes the earning of every inch a chore for the opposing offense andscores with big plays can turn the tides in a game versus an evenly matched opponent.

All of these building blocks can be attributed to one attainable characteristic, one virtue that we muststrive to achieve. That key to our success is

DISCIPLINE IS WHAT YOU DO WHEN NO ONE IS LOOKING!  IT’S BEING 

CONSIDERATE OF THE OTHER PERSON.  HAVING GOOD PERSONAL HABITS.

YOU ARE POLITE, ON TIME, TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS WITH PRIDE.

WE MUST BE DISCIPLINED AS INDIVIDUALS FIRST, AND THEN AS A TEAM

A DISCIPLINED PLAYER:

1.  Knows the importance of BEING ON TIME.

2.  Hard work in practice has taught him the value of regular hours and good training habits.

3.  Has learned that the TEAM comes before himself. This strengthens his character as he issometimes called upon to sacrifice for others.

4.  Has learned to take orders; in taking orders he learns how to give them.

5.  Knows discipline is the essence of every successful organization; as a member of the team,he understands the need for it.

6.  Has learned that many of these things establish a degree of self-discipline.

A DISCIPLINED FOOTBALL TEAM:

1.  Doesn’t beat itself by mistakes.

2.  Keeps penalties to a minimum.

3.  Is always ready to play – INTENSITY.

4.  Has the guts to come back from behind.

5.  Rises above adversity.

6.  Never, never quits.

DISCIPLINE ISSUES

Once training camp begins, the following discipline outline will be enacted. To be fair, we want youto know exactly what you will encounter if you violate team rules. Any violations will be cause forpunishment at the discretion of the position coach or Head Coach.

1.  Procedures

•  The Head Coach and Position Coaches will be responsible for establishing what is aviolation of team rules or policy. Position coaches will be responsible for executingpunishments.

•  If a player has been in trouble often, the player in question will have a conference with hisposition coach and Coach Cole to discuss the situation. Coach Cole will then decide

what course of action will be followed.  Possible outcomes include team service, conditioning punishment, suspension, or dismissal.

2.  Meetings, Practice, Weight Lifting and Morning Conditioning

•  Any conflicts with a meeting or practice session must be dealt with three (3) days prior to

the obligation with your position coach.•  If a last minute and unavoidable circumstance arises where you will be late for an

obligation you must make a phone call to the football office prior to the beginning of theobligation to notify the coaching staff that you are on your way but you will be late.Habitual informed tardiness will eventually be dealt with as an offense and you will bepunished.

•  If you are late or absent for an obligation without permission you will be punished foryour decision to act irresponsibly.

3.  Study Table, Learning Center Appointments, and Individual Study Sessions

•  Any conflicts with study table or a learning center appointment must be dealt with three(3) days prior to the meeting with your position coach.

•  If a last minute and unavoidable circumstance arises where you will be late for anacademic obligation you must make a phone call to the football office prior to thebeginning of the obligation to notify the coaching staff that you are on your way but youwill be late. Habitual informed tardiness will eventually be dealt with as an offense andyou will be punished.

•  If you are late or absent for an academic obligation without permission you will bepunished for your decision to act irresponsibly.

4.  Other ItemsThere are several behavior problems that have become disciplinary issues in the past. Specialattention will the paid to the following behaviors to ensure that all team members are adheringto team policy.

a)  Game Day Attire – All players should be dressed in the Adidas gear that has been issuedfor game day. Shirts should be tucked in, pants should be pulled up, and running shoes orsandals should be worn.

b)  Game Uniform – All players should be dressed according to NCAA rules. Players are towear game socks that are issued. Jerseys are not to be taped up. Shoes are not to becovered with a pair of game socks.

c)  Walk-throughs – Players are expected to be quiet during walk-throughs. If you are notinvolved in the drill you should be off to the side, paying attention, with your mouthclosed. Horseplay and “grab-ass” will result in your removal from the practice.

d)  Meeting Rooms – All players should sit up, be attentive, and should not litter the floorwith garbage, pre-wrap, or tape.

e)  Parking – All players should park in designated parking area, within the yellow lines.Parking is not permitted on the grass in front of the locker room. If you park illegally andyour car is being ticked or towed during the meeting and you chose to leave the meetingroom you will be counted as being absent from the meeting.

f)  Transportation – Players should not ride in the back of pick-up trucks on the way to orfrom practice. It is dangerous and against the law. Players should obey speed limits onthe driveway at the practice facility and should utilize a reasonable minimum speed.

g)  Practice Gear – Appropriate practice gear must be worn at all time. Socks should be whiteas issued by equipment manager. Do not wear socks, sweat pants, or running tights thatare colors other than what is assigned to be worn.

h)  T-shirts/shorts, sweats, and Equipment – Respect the belongings of other people and donot “borrow”, steal, or use another person’s belongings without their permission.

i)  Pre-practice – Players are expected to be fully dressed and ready to go when the pre-practice period begins.

 j)  Tobacco Products – It is an NCAA violation to consume tobacco products during anyTiffin University Athletic Department function. In addition it is against Tiffin University

policy to use tobacco on any institution-owned property. Adherence to these rules will bestrictly enforced.

k)  Profanity – Players and coaches should utilize appropriate and acceptable language at alltimes. Loud, profane, excessive, and offensive language will not be tolerated. Racial slursbetween members of the same minority groups are viewed as offensive as racial slurs frommembers of different ethnic backgrounds, and therefore will not be tolerated.

l)  Salutations – Treat coaches, administration, faculty, and staff with respect. Do not addressindividuals by their last name without a salutation. Address coaches as “Coach”, facultyas “Professor” or “Doctor”, and administrators as “Doctor”, “Mr.”, or “Ms.”

m)  Study Table- Study table is a structured quite time to read, study, or do homework. Do notask to go to the library, work on the computer, or get together with a work group. Those

activities should be planned on your own time. If you don’t like this arrangement the onlyway to avoid it is to get better grades and get off of study table.

n)  Treatment – You are not excused from any football obligation due to an injury or illnessuntil you have seen the trainer. Do not miss an obligation based on a self-diagnosedmalady. See the trainer as soon as you feel ill or that you are injured.

5.  Punishment

•  First Offense – Individual early morning workout with position coach. Minimum duration20 minutes.

•  Second Offense – Individual early morning workout with position coach. Minimumduration 40 minutes.

•  Third Offense – Individual early morning workout with position coach. Minimumduration 60 minutes.

•  Being a part of this team is a privilege, not a right.

•  Tiffin University Administration and the Head Football Coach
