More than just a school, Shattuck-St. Mary’s is made

up of students, faculty and coaches who actively create

a living and learning community. As a coeducational, college

preparatory boarding and day school for students in grades 6

through 12, we offer students the chance to combine the solid

foundation of challenging, motivating academics with focused

opportunities in extracurricular areas. This combination of

possibilities and resources for excellence is at the heart of what

we call the “& experience”and is what makes SSM unique.

What does this mean? Integrated into our academic program

are the possibilities to branch out and excel in a number of

areas, such as hockey, figure skating, soccer, and the arts.

In 2006-07, our 387 students come from 34 states and

20 countries. With an average class size of 15, and a student

to teacher ratio of 7 to 1, our primary goal is to prepare each

student not just for college but for a confident life beyond

our doors. Founded in 1858, Shattuck-St. Mary’s is one of

the oldest college preparatory schools in the Midwest.

We seek students of above-average ability and

achievement who are eager to take full advantage

of the School’s academic program and broad range of

extracurricular activities. Application forms can be obtained

by contacting the Admissions Office at 800-421-2724 or

507-333-1618. All of the forms are also included on the

School’s Web site: www.s-sm.org.

Welcome to the 2006-07 Shattuck-St. Mary’s Soccer ProgramThis year close to 70 athletes from 19 states and 4 countries arrived on campus to take part in our fulltime soccer development program. These boys and girls are part of a unique program that allows them to combine their passion for soccer with their pursuit of an outstandingeducation by participating in a sport-specific Center of Excellence at Shattuck-St. Mary’s.

While the inception of the program brought many changes to campus last year, we continue to improve both on and off the field. In additionto the outstanding facilities that provide perfect year-round training conditions, numerous improvements continue to provide the resourcesand support necessary to conduct a full-time development program. A few of the major improvements are:

• Increasing the coaching staff to seven• Addition of a new natural grass playing field with underground irrigation• Expanded national scheduling providing increased exposure for our players• Team shelters and electronic scoreboard constructed on the outdoor synthetic field• Opening of the SSM Soccer House to accommodate coaching and administrative offices

The excitement that came with our first year of operation continues strong today. The student-athletes greatly add to the culture of theSchool while the program adds significantly to the soccer environment of our region. There is no doubt that Shattuck-St. Mary’s soccer ismaking its mark by providing boys and girls with an opportunity of a lifetime.

Soccer at Shattuck-Saint Mary’s

The soccer program at Shattuck-St. Mary’s School provides

a unique developmental approach for young, aspiring

players who are passionate about their sport and want a

greater challenge than what is available to them in their local

community. A fulltime residency program and a part-time

youth academy are available for players to choose from based

on their age, ability and interest. Inclusion in our school’s

fulltime residency program is based on both an academic

admissions process and an evaluation of playing ability.

Residency Program

Our fulltime residential program is the cornerstone of

our curriculum and provides a full nine months of

soccer development and training. This sport-specific program

is part of the Center of Excellence programming offered by

Shattuck-St. Mary’s and provides boys and girls with an

outstanding college preparatory education while allowing

them to be totally immersed in their sport. Players within our

residency program train and compete on teams that are based

on age and ability. This comprehensive program provides an

environment similar to those found in youth academies at

professional clubs world-wide.

Adaily regimen of individual and team training, soccer-

specific conditioning, match competition, strength

training and ongoing player evaluation is included in our

fulltime program. Starting in September when school begins,

players train daily following their classes and compete on

weekends, afternoons or evenings throughout the school

year. A program of competition providing 50-60 games

against school, club, ODP or senior amateur teams is

customized to meet the ever-changing needs of each age

group team. In addition, every year our oldest teams attend

two or more nationally recognized college showcase events

that provide exposure for our college-bound athletes.

Outstanding facilities provide perfect training conditions

year round, regardless of weather. Players have access

to some of the finest soccer facilities in the country. The Dane

Family Field House provides our players with a full-sized

state-of-the-art indoor synthetic field. In addition, an irrigated

natural grass field and a second outdoor synthetic field are

also available for training and games. All fields provide for

a minimum playing dimension of 115x70 yards and are fully

equipped with both full and small-sided goals for training

and games.

Helping athletes to stay injury free and healthy is an

important aspect of our program. Our health and sport

medicine center provides two fulltime athletic trainers, three

fulltime nurses and a part-time nutritionist. These individuals

provide daily treatment and care for the athlete as well as

coordinating and overseeing any rehabilitation program for

an injured player. Backing up our sports medicine staff are

several area physicians who specialize in the treatment and

care of sports injuries.

1155

Another vital component of our program that keeps

players in competition and enhances their performance

is the School’s strength and conditioning center. A fully

equipped strength training facility is utilized by all our

teams throughout the school year. Supplementing this is

the soccer-specific performance training that is integrated

into the on-field training sessions. Focusing on the athletic

qualities necessary for an elite athlete, players receive

training to improve agility, balance, endurance, flexibility,

starting speed and power.

Perhaps the most significant factor of our residency

program is the existing culture of Shattuck-St. Mary’s

that allows for a fulltime program. Providing the ingredients

described above on a consistent, long-term basis greatly

accelerates a player’s individual development and game

maturity. Integrating an academic and soccer development

program under one roof allows the athlete to experience

many other important aspects of school life during their

time at Shattuck-St. Mary’s.

Youth Academy

Apart-time soccer development program for young boys

and girls from Southern Minnesota is provided by our

youth academy. Players in the Youth Academy utilize the

same facilities and coaches as our fulltime program as well

as selected college and youth coaches from the community.

Players are provided a superior learning experience that

enhances their overall soccer experience.

Academy programming provides age-appropriate training

for boys and girls through three distinct developmental

programs. These programs—Soccer Start, Academy Player

Development Program, and Academy Select Teams—provide

a supplemental training environment for over 300 young

boys and girls.

The Soccer Start program provides beginning players

and their youth coaches with an introductory skill

development curriculum. The Player Development Program

offers competitive players, age 8-16, a program of technical

and tactical training aimed at improving their understanding

of soccer through small-sided games. Our final academy

program provides players age 11 and up, with the

opportunity to train and compete as a member of an

Academy Select Team.

In addition our Youth Academy organizes and schedules

several youth tournaments and friendly games throughout

the year. These tournaments and games provide each player

with additional game exposure which greatly aids in their

overall development.

For news about these developing programs, check out the

Shattuck-St. Mary’s School Web site at www.s-sm.org.

More information can be obtained by contacting our Youth

Academy manager at [email protected] or 507-333-1609.

Student-athletes participating in the soccer program at

Shattuck-St. Mary’s School have the opportunity to

benefit from working with coaches who have an extensive

network of collegiate contacts and working with college

advisors who have significant experience working with the

full spectrum of colleges and universities available in the

United States.

Beginning in the winter of the junior year, coaches and

college advisors work together to help each student-

athlete develop a potential list of colleges and universities

with particular attention paid to the athletic/academic

interface. While coaches assist student-athletes in identifying

a range of schools appropriate for a young person’s particular

skill/talent level, college advisors assist students in identifying

a range of schools appropriate for a young person’s interests

and academic preparation. While coaches assist student-

athletes in preparing for contact with collegiate coaches and

official/unofficial visits, college advisors assist with NCAA

Clearinghouse registration, test registration, and application

preparation.

Shattuck-St. Mary’s School has more than a decade of

experience in working with student-athletes who seek to

continue their athletic participation at the highest level

possible during their college years while also pursuing an

academic career in preparation for graduate and/or

professional school. We, as an institution, take great pride in

providing students with the counsel of skilled professionals

who have made working with motivated young people their

life’s work.
