Do not use leaded gasoline, asotherwise the lambda probe and

catalytic converter will be permanentlydamaged.<

Use high-quality brandsField experience has indicated signifi-cant differences in fuel quality: volatility, composition, additives, etc., amonggasolines offered for sale in the UnitedStates and Canada. Fuels containing upto and including 10% ethanol or other

oxygenates with up to 2.8 % oxygen byweight, that is, 15% MTBE or 3% meth-anol plus an equivalent amount of co-solvent, will not void the applicablewarranties with respect to defects inmaterials or workmanship.

The use of poor-quality fuels mayresult in drivability, starting and

stalling problems especially under cer-

tain environmental conditions such ashigh ambient temperature and high alti-tude.Should you encounter drivability prob-lems which you suspect could berelated to the fuel you are using, werecommend that you respond by

switching to a recognized high-qualitybrand.Failure to comply with these recom-mendations may also result in unsched-uled maintenance.<

vehicle may operate differentlydepending on the key, refer topage 58.To distinguish between keys, you canmark each key with remote control byapplying one of the colored decalsthat you received when accepting

delivery of your vehicle

In every master key with theremote control feature there is an

extended-life battery that is charged

automatically in the ignition lock as youdrive. Therefore, use otherwise unused mas-ter keys for a longer journey every sixmonths so that the battery can becharged.<

2 Spare key – for storage in a safeplace, such as in your wallet. This keyis not intended for constant use. Theluggage compartment lid and theglove compartment cannot be lockedand unlocked with this key. This isuseful for valet parking, for example

Central locking system

The concept

The vehicle alarm system responds:

>When a door, the hood or the lug-gage compartment lid is opened

>To movement inside the vehicle –interior motion sensor

>To variations in the vehicle's tilt anglesuch as those occurring duringattempts to steal the wheels or towthe vehicle – tilt alarm sensor.

>To interruption of battery voltage.

The system responds to unauthorizedvehicle entry and attempted theft bysimultaneously activating the following:

>The acoustic alarm sounds for30 seconds

>The hazard warning flashers are acti-vated for approx. five minutes

>The high beams flash on and off inrhythm with the hazard warning flash-ers.

To arm and disarm the alarm

systemWhen the vehicle is locked or unlockedvia the remote control or the driver'sdoor lock, the alarm system is alsosimultaneously armed or disarmed.

You can have different acknowl-edgment signals set to confirm

arming and disarming.<

Indicator lamp displays

>The indicator lamp below the interiorrearview mirror flashes continuously:the system is armed

>The indicator lamp flashes immedi-ately after the vehicle is locked: doorsor luggage compartment lid are notcompletely closed. Even if you do notclose the alerted area(s), the remain-ing areas are secured, and the indi-cator lamp will flash continuouslyafter 10 seconds. However, the inte-rior motion sensor is not activated

>The indicator lamp goes out immedi-ately after the vehicle is unlocked: nomanipulation or attempted intrusionshave been detected in the periodsince the system was armed

>The indicator lamp flashes for10 seconds immediately after the

system is armed: an attempted entryhas been detected in the period sincethe system was armed.

Following triggering of an alarm, theindicator lamp will flash continuously.

Tilt alarm sensor and interiormotion sensor

Tilt alarm sensor:

The tilt of the vehicle is monitored. Thealarm system reacts, for example, toattempts to steal the wheels or tow thevehicle

Interior motion sensor:

In order for the interior motion sensor tofunction properly, the windows and theglass sunroof must be completelyclosed.

Avoiding unintentional alarms

The tilt alarm sensor and interior motionsensor may be switched off at the same

time. You can do this to prevent a falsealarm, e.g. in the following situations:

> In garages with elevator ramps>When the vehicle is being trans-

ported by train>When animals are to remain in the

vehicle.

To deactivate the tilt alarm andinterior motion sensors

>Press the button on the remote con-trol twice.

The indicator lamp lights up briefly andthen flashes continuously. The tilt alarmsensor and the interior motion sensorare deactivated until the vehicle isunlocked and locked again.

You can have the tilt alarm sensorand the interior motion sensor

permanently deactivated.<

The system inadvertently deacti-vates the tilt alarm sensor and the

interior motion sensor if the conve-nience closing of windows and glasssunroof is interrupted within the first10 seconds and then restarted. Thevehicle must then be unlocked andrelocked before the sensors will resumeoperation.<

Trap protection

If the glass sunroof encounters resis-tance when closing from approximately

the half-closed position or when closingfrom the raised position, the closingoperation is interrupted and the glasssunroof reopens slightly.

Despite trap protection, alwaysmake sure that the sunroof can

close without obstruction, otherwise insome cases, e.g. with thin objects, it isnot guaranteed that the closing opera-tion will be interrupted.Trap protection is restricted when theswitch is pressed and held beyond thepressure point. The sunroof opens only

Adjustments

Safe seating position

Page 41: 2006 3 Series Coupe

8/6/2019 2006 3 Series Coupe

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/2006-3-series-coupe 41/174

For driving that is relaxed and less likelyto cause fatigue, you should select asitting position that reflects your per-

sonal requirements. In combinationwith the safety belts and airbags, thecorrect seating position also plays animportant role in enhancing occupantsafety in the event of an accident. Toensure that the vehicle's safety systemsprovide you with optimal protection, we

request that you direct your carefulattention to the following section.

For supplementary information ontransporting children, refer to page 54.

Sitting safely with airbags

Always maintain an adequate dis-tance between yourself and the

airbags. Always hold the steering wheelby the rim to keep any chance of injuryto hands or arms to an absolute mini-mum should the airbag be deployed.Never allow any objects, individuals oranimals to obstruct the areas betweenpassengers and airbags. Never use thefront airbag's cover as a storage tray orsupport for objects of any kind. Neverallow front passengers to rest their feetor legs on the airbag cover.<

For airbag locations and additionalinformation on airbags, refer topage 51.

Sitting safely with safety belts

Your vehicle offers five sitting positions, each of which is provided with a safetybelt.

Never allow more than one personto wear a single safety belt. Never

allow infants or small children to ride in

a passenger's lap. Avoid twisting thebelt while routing it firmly across thepelvis and shoulder, wear it as snuglyagainst your body as possible. Do notallow the belt to rest against hard orfragile objects. Do not route the beltacross your neck, or run it across sharp

edges. Be sure that the belt does notbecome caught or jammed. Avoidwearing bulky clothing and pull on thelap belt periodically to retension it overyour shoulders. In the event of a frontalimpact, a loose lap belt could slide overthe hips, leading to abdominal injury. In

addition, the safety belt's restrainteffectiveness is reduced if it is wornloosely. Expectant mothers shouldalways wear their safety belts, takingcare to position the lap belt against thelower hips, where it will not exert pres-sure against the abdominal area.<

For information on using the safetybelts, refer to page 46.

always sit upright and be properlyrestrained – infants and small children

in appropriate child-restraint systems;larger children and adults using thesafety belts. Never let an occupant'shead rest near or on a side airbagbecause the inflating airbag couldcause a serious or fatal injury. Pleasenote that the word Airbag imprinted on

the door trim panel indicates the air-bag's location.Accident research shows that the saf-est place for children in an automobileis in the rear seat. However, a child sit-ting in the rear seat and not properlyrestrained may place his or her head onor near the airbag, if so equipped. Forexample, a child — even though beltedin — may fall asleep with his or her headagainst the side airbag. It may be diffi-cult for a driver to ensure that childrenin the rear seat will remain properlypositioned at all times and do not placetheir heads on or near the side airbag. Therefore, we recommend that therear-seat side airbags, if installed in thevehicle, be deactivated if children willbe riding in the rear seat. The rear seat side airbags may alreadyhave been deactivated by a BMW cen-ter. If you are uncertain of their status,

deactivated, please contact your BMWcenter.<

Even when all these guidelines areobserved, there is still a small residualrisk of injuries to the face, hands andarms occurring from airbag deploymentin isolated instances.

In sensitive individuals, the ignition and

inflation noise may induce a mild hear-ing loss that is temporary in mostcases.

Corresponding airbag warning labelsare found on both sun visors.

This is the right way a child should sit ina child restraint when rear side airbagsare provided.

restraint device or child seat, please read the following:

Never install a rearward-facing child-restraint system in the front passengerseat of this vehicle.Your vehicle is equipped with an airbagsupplemental restraint system for thefront passenger. Because the backreston any rearward-facing child-restraintsystem – of the kind designed forinfants under 1 year and 20 lbs/9 kg –would be within the airbag's deploy-ment range, you should never mountsuch a device in the front passengerseat, since the impact of the airbagagainst the child-restraint's backrestcould lead to serious or fatal injuries. If it is necessary for a child – not aninfant – to ride in the front seat, certainprecautions should be taken. First, move the passenger seat as far awayfrom the dashboard as possible. Thisimportant precaution is intended tomaximize the distance between the air-bag and the child. Older childrenshould be tightly secured with a safetybelt after they have outgrown a boosterseat that is appropriate for their age, height, and weight. Younger childrenshould be secured in an appropriateforward-facing child-restraint system

with a safety belt.Never install a rearward-facing child-

restraint system in the front passengerseat. We strongly urge you to carefully readand comply with the instructions forinstallation and use provided by thechild restraint's manufacturer when-ever you use such a device.Do not attempt to modify child-restraintsystems. If you do this, the protectionprovided by these systems could beimpaired.Always ensure that all occupants – of allages – remain properly and securelyrestrained at all times.<

All rear seating positions in your vehiclemeet the recommendations ofSAE J1819, an industry-recommendedpractice for securing child-restraint sys-tems in motor vehicles.

Securing child-restraint system

All of the rear belt retractors and thefront passenger's safety belt can belocked for mounting and securing child-restraint systems.

A label with the appropriate instructionsfor this is located in the immediatevicinity of the buckle latch of eachsafety belt.

To lock the safety belt

Extract the entire length of the belt fromthe inertia reel mechanism. Allow thereel to retract the belt somewhat andengage the buckle, then tighten the beltagainst the child-restraint system. Theretraction mechanism is now locked.

No doubt you have reflected at onetime or another on how great it would

be if you could permanently configureyour vehicle's various features andadjustments to mirror your own individ-ual preferences. In engineering yourvehicle, BMW has provided for a num-ber of options for personal adjustmentthat can be programmed into your vehi-

cle at your BMW center. The available configuration data fall intotwo categories, according to whethertheir primary orientation is the vehicle –Vehicle Memory – or the individual –Key Memory. Provided that each per-son has a separate remote-control key,

you can have your BMW center enteradjustment data for as many as four dif-ferent individuals into the system.

The system then relies on a bilateraldata exchange to identify the individualuser and executes the selected settingswhenever the remote control unit isused to disengage the door locks.

The sequential manual gearbox SMG isan automated manual gearbox with

which clutching and shifting is assumedby an electro-hydraulic system.

The SMG is operated via the selectorlever in the center console and two shiftpaddles on the steering wheel.

It offers the following functions:

>Sequential mode: manual mode>Drive mode: automatic operation

>Ability to choose between two differ-ent driving programs: Standard,Sport

>Operating safety through protectionagainst misshifting

>Automatic upshifts and downshifts inthe drive mode

>Automatic downshifts at minimumengine rpm

driver's door is opened while the engineis running and the driver does not actu-ate the pedals, the shift paddles or theselector lever. This is accompanied by an acousticsignal and the flashing gear indicator. The gear display N appears in theinstrument cluster.A driving position can only be engagedwhen the driver's door is closed. When the vehicle is unlocked, a buzzerin the area of the transmission indicatesthat the system is ready for operation.<

Shiftlock

When the car is at a standstill, a safetyfunction requires you to depress thebrake pedal if you want to move theselector lever from the neutralposition N to a driving position.

Driving precautions

Use enough acceleration to pullaway speedily when moving off on

an uphill gradient. Never try to preventthe car from rolling back on an uphillgradient by depressing the acceleratorpedal; always apply the handbrake.Otherwise you could overheat the SMG

gearbox.<

tires. The system alerts you wheneverthe inflation pressure of a tire falls sig-nificantly below the pressure of anothertire.

The system actually detects pressureloss by monitoring differences in therelative speeds of the four wheels. It

interprets variations outside specifiedlimits as severe pressure loss, and thenresponds by generating a warning.

Functional requirements

In order for the Flat Tire Monitor to learnthe correct tire inflation pressure,

please do the following:1. Check the tire inflation pressures in

all tires2. Compare them with the tire inflation

pressure table, refer to page 116,and correct them, if necessary

3. Initialize the system.

106 Cargo loading

Avoid overloading the vehicle sothat the permitted load on the tires

is not exceeded. Overloading can leadto overheating and internal tire damage.

The ultimate result can assume theform of a sudden air loss.<

4. The resulting figure equals the avail-able amount of cargo and luggageload capacity. For example, if the XXX amount

equals 1,400 lbs. and there will befive 150 lbs. passengers in your vehi-cle the amount of available cargo

Determining the maximum load

1. Locate the following statement onyour vehicle‘s placard*:

The combined weight of occu-pants and cargo should never

exceed XXX kg or YYY lbs., as thiscould otherwise result in damage to thevehicle or unstable driving conditions.<

2. Determine the combined weight ofthe driver and passengers that will beriding in your vehicle

3. Subtract the combined weight of thedriver and passengers fromXXX kilograms or YYY pounds

cle, the amount of available cargoand luggage load capacity is650 lbs.:1,400 lbs. minus 750 lbs. = 650 lbs.

5. Determine the combined weight of

luggage and cargo being loaded onthe vehicle. That weight may notsafely exceed the available cargoand luggage load capacity calculatedin Step 4

6. If your vehicle will be towing a trailer, load from your trailer will be trans-

fered to your vehicle. Consult themanual for transporting a trailer todetermine how this may reduce theavailable cargo and luggage loadcapacity of your vehicle.

Load

The permissible load is the sum of theoccupants' weights and the weight ofthe cargo. The greater the weight of theoccupants, the less cargo can be trans-ported.

Stowing cargo

>Load heavy cargo as far forward aspossible – directly behind the back-rests – and as low as possible

>Cover sharp edges and corners>Do not pile objects higher than the

top edge of the backrest

>For transporting very heavy loadswhen the rear seat is not occupied, secure the outer safety belts in theopposite buckles, refer to the illustra-tion.

To fold up the covers, please use thetool provided with the roof-rack system.

Loading and driving notes

Roof-mounted luggage racks raise thecenter of gravity of the vehicle whenthey are loaded. For this reason, theyhave a major effect on the vehicle'shandling and steering response.

Make sure that the load is not too bulky, and attempt to distribute it evenly.Always load the heaviest pieces first sothat they are at the bottom. Be sure thatadequate clearance is maintained for

raising the glass sunroof, and thatobjects do not project into the openingpath of the luggage compartment lid.

Secure the roof-mounted luggage cor-rectly and safely to prevent it from shift-ing or being lost during driving.

Drive smoothly and avoid suddenacceleration and braking. Do not cornerat high speeds.

The luggage rack and the roof loadincrease aerodynamic resistance:increased fuel consumption and addi-tional stress on the vehicle's body are

the result.

Special operating instructions

Break-in procedures

To ensure that your vehicle providesmaximum economy throughout a longservice life, we request that you complywith the following information.

Engine and differential

The first 1,250 miles/2,000 km:

When the vehicle is operated onwet or slushy roads, a wedge of

water may form between the tire andthe road surface. This phenomenon is

referred to as hydroplaning and canlead to partial or complete loss of trac-tion, vehicle control and braking effec-

After replacing parts

Follow the same break-in procedures ifany of the components mentionedabove have to be replaced in the future.

Page 112: 2006 3 Series Coupe

8/6/2019 2006 3 Series Coupe

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/2006-3-series-coupe 112/174

The first 1,250 miles/2,000 km:

Drive at varying engine and roadspeeds, but do not exceed an enginespeed of 4,500 rpm or a road speed of100 mph / 160 km/h.

Always obey all official speed limits.

Do not use full throttle, and avoidpressing the accelerator beyond thekickdown point during these initialmiles.

You can then proceed to increase

engine or vehicle speeds once the ini-tial 1,250 miles/2,000 km have elapsed.

Tires

Due to technical factors associatedwith their manufacture, tires do notachieve their full traction potential until

after an initial break-in period. We thusask you to drive with extra care duringthe first 200 miles/300 km.

Always obey all official speed limits.

tiveness. Reduce your speed on wetroads.<

Brake system

Approx. 300 miles/500 km must elapsebefore the brake pads and rotorsachieve the optimal pad-surface andwear patterns required for trouble-freeoperation and an extended service lifelater on.

To break in the separate parking brake

drums, apply the parking brake lightlywhen coasting to a standstill – at a traf-fic signal, for instance – provided thattraffic conditions allow you to do so.

To avoid corrosion, repeat this proce-dure from time to time.

Clutch

Approx. 300 miles/500 km must elapsebefore the clutch starts to operate atoptimum efficiency. Remember toengage the clutch carefully during thisinitial period.

even light but consistent pedal pres-sure can lead to high temperatures, brake wear and possibly even brakefailure.<

The braking power of the engine can befurther enhanced by downshifting theautomatic transmission in manualmode, if necessary, into first gear. Thishelps avoid placing excessive loads onthe brake system.

for braking or steering when the engineis off.Floor mats, floor carpets or otherobjects must not be in the area near thebrake or accelerator pedal, as thiscould impair the movement of the ped-als.<

Corrosion on the brake rotors

Limited vehicle use, extended periodswith the vehicle parked or in storage,

and operating conditions in which brak-ing is restricted to gentle, low-pressureapplications will all increase the ten-dency for corrosion to form on therotors and contamination to accumulateon the brake pads. This occurs becausethe minimal pressure which must be

exerted by the pads to clean the rotorsby brake applications is not reached.

If the brake rotors are corroded, theywill tend to respond to braking with apulsating effect that even extendedbrake applications will fail to cure.

ycannot ensure the operating safety ofthe vehicle if they are installed.<

Portable phone in the vehicle

BMW advises against usingmobile equipment, e.g. cellular

phones, inside the vehicle without con-necting them directly to an outsideantenna. Otherwise, it cannot be ruledout that vehicle electronics and themobile equipment interfere with one

another. In addition, it is not ensuredthat the radio waves emitted duringtransmission are directed outside of thevehicle interior.<

The concept

ABS keeps the wheels from lockingduring braking, thereby enhancingactive driving safety.

If you are in a situation that requires fullbraking, you will exploit the full benefitsof the ABS system if you apply maxi-mum pedal pressure: panic stop. Sincethe vehicle maintains steering respon-

siveness, you can avoid possible obsta-cles with a minimum of steering effort, despite the full brake application.

Pulsation at the brake pedal combinedwith sounds from the hydraulic circuitsindicates to the driver that ABS is in itsactive mode.

Dynamic Brake Control (DBC)

DBC is included in the DSC, refer topage 81.

The system responds to sudden, high-intensity applications of force to the

brake pedal by automatically brakingthe vehicle with maximum boost toachieve the shortest-possible brakingdistances during 'panic stops'. Thissystem exploits all the benefits of ABS.

CBC is an advanced engineering devel-opment of ABS. When braking duringcornering with high lateral accelera-tion, or when braking during a lane

change, vehicle stability is improvedand the steering response is enhanced.

Wheels and tires

Tire inflation pressure

Information for your safety

It is not merely the tire's service life, butalso driving safety and driving comfortthat greatly depend on the condition of

the tires and the maintenance of thespecified tire inflation pressure.

After correcting the tire inflation pres-sure, reinitialize the Flat Tire Monitor, refer to page 82.

Page 116: 2006 3 Series Coupe

8/6/2019 2006 3 Series Coupe

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/2006-3-series-coupe 116/174

Check tire inflation pressures on aregular basis and correct them, if

necessary, including the compactwheel: at least twice a month and

before beginning a longer trip. If this isnot done, incorrect tire pressures cancause driving instability and tire dam-age, ultimately resulting in accidents.Do not drive with a pressureless, i.e.flat, tire, unless your vehicle isequipped with Run Flat tires. A flat tire

greatly impairs steering and brakingresponse, and can lead to completeloss of control over the vehicle.<

Checking tire pressures

Only check the tire inflation pressuresof cold tires. This means after driving a

maximum of 1.25 miles/2 km or afterthe vehicle has been parked for at least2 hours. Warm tires have higher infla-tion pressures.

Inflation pressures for originaltires

Tire pressures for the standard tires ofyour vehicle are shown on the driver'sdoor post, visible when the door isopen.

The inflation pressures apply to BMW-approved tire sizes and recommendedtire brands. Your BMW center will beglad to supply this information.

Tread wear

The tread wear grade is a comparativerating based on the wear rate of the tirewhen tested under controlled condi-

tions on a specified government testcourse.

For example, a tire graded 150 wouldwear one and one-half – 1 1 /2 – times aswell on the government course as a tiregraded 100. The relative performanceof tires depends upon the actual condi-

Temperature

The temperature grades are A, thehighest, B, and C, representing thetire's resistance to the generation of

heat and its ability to dissipate heatwhen tested under controlled condi-tions on a specified indoor laboratorytest wheel.

Sustained high temperature can causethe material of the tire to degenerateand reduce tire life, and excessive tem-

perature can lead to sudden tire failure. The grade C corresponds to a level ofperformance which all passenger cartires must meet under the FederalMotor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 109.

Special characteristics of wintertires

BMW recommends the use of wintertires for operation under winter roadconditions. While all-season tires withM+S designation provide better wintertraction than summer tires, they gener-ally do not achieve the full performanceof winter tires.

Run Flat tires:If your vehicle is equipped with Run Flattires, refer to Run Flat tires, please notethe following: when mounting new tiresor replacing summer tires with winter

pare rated. Unprofessional attempts bylaymen to service tires can lead to dam-age and accidents. Have this work per-

formed by skilled professionals only. The technicians at your BMW centerwill be glad to assist you with therequired professional knowledge andspecialized equipment.<

Storage

Always store tires in a cool, dry place.Store them away from light wheneverpossible. Protect the tires against con-tact with oil, grease and fuel. Do notexceed the maximum tire inflation pres-sures specified on the tire sidewall.

Comply with all manufacturer's safetyprecautions when mounting the chains.Do not exceed a speed of 30 mph /

50 km/h when using snow chains. You cannot mount snow chains on thefollowing tires:

>225/50 R 16>225/45 R 17>245/40 R 17>225/40 R 18

>255/35 R 18.

Do not initialize the Flat Tire Moni-tor after mounting snow chains to

the tires. When driving with snow chains, it maybe useful to turn off the DSC for a short

time, refer to page 81 or 82.<
