Men’s Volleyball

With five of six starters returning from a team that posted a 22-4 record a year ago, expectations are obviously high for the 2006 Park University men’s volleyball team. Park, which captured the regular season MAMVIC conference champi-onship in 2005, enters this season as the No. 2 team in the nation, accord-ing to the Tachikara-NAIA Men’s Volleyball Preseason Top 10 Poll. Leading the group of eight returning letterwinners and seven newcom-ers is the senior trio of Marco Rabello (Sao Paulo, Brazil), Cristian Maciel (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Walker Swan (Norfolk, Neb.). “I’m looking for more leadership from our seniors,” said Head Coach Cory Frederick. “They are three great players and have a lot of experience to offer their new teammates.” Rabello, who was a second-team all-conference selection in 2005, aver-aged 3.33 kills and a team-high 2.35 digs per game last year. “Marco has been training hard all off-season,” Frederick said. “His extensive court experience make him a natural leader.” Maciel, a member of the 2005 NAIA National Invitational All-Tournament team last season, led the Pirates offensively with 4.09 kills per game in 2005. “Cristian is great ball control player,” Frederick said. “We’ll look for him to lead our team in passing and offense again this season.” A two-time MAMVIC Scholar-Athlete, Swan earned first-team all-con-ference honors after leading the nation with a .501 hitting percentage as a junior. “Walker is a great leader on and off the court,” Frederick said. “In lead-ing the nation in hitting last season and maintaining a 4.0 GPA through out his college career, he has earned the respect of the entire team.” Sophomores J.P. da Silva (Minas Gerais, Brazil) and Ryan Stafford (San Ramon, Calif.) round out the returning starters. Da Silva, who earned NAIA National Player of the Week honors last season, averaged 12.39 assists per game in 2005, while Stafford ranked third on the team with 2.94 kills per game as a freshman. Other returning letterwinners include junior Daniel Joens (Overland Park, Kan.), sophomore Caio Maciel (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and sophomore Brett Ferguson (Kansas City, Mo.). Highlighting the group of talented newcomers are junior Jeremy Scharf (Simi Valley, Calif.), and the freshman trio of Darko Bojovic (Belgrade, Serbia), Nikola Bursac (Belgrade, Serbia) and Henry Uribe (Marisco Gonnell, Venezuela. “There will be many new faces on the roster this year and several of these players will be in the hunt to earn a starting role,” Frederick said. “The increased depth will make for more competition for playing time. “This healthy competition will provide us with intense practices and a desire to improve everyday,” Frederick added. “If our team can take on this mentality and play together, we will be sure to have a successful sea-son.”

Season Preview Cory Frederick-- Head Coach-- Second Season

Cory Frederick enters his second season as the head men’s volleyball coach at Park University.

In his first campaign with the Pirates, he led his 2005 squad to a 22-4 record and a

MAMVIC Regular Season Championship. Frederick came to Park following a three-year stay as an assistant wom-en’s volleyball coach at Missouri Western State College in St. Joseph, Mo. At Missouri Western, he contributed to scouting, recruiting and practice management. Before his stint at Missouri Western, Frederick spent a year in the high school ranks coaching the girl’s program at Fridley (Minn.) High School in 2000. He has extensive experience working camps during the summer, including serving at the University of Minnesota and Stanford University camps. Frederick earned his undergraduate degree in biology from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1998, where competed in NIRSA Div. I Club Volleyball. In addition, he completed his formal certification in cytotech-nology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., in 2000. He and his wife Becky reside in Parkville, Mo., and have two dogs, Izzy and Chaos.

Championship team. As a senior in 2004, he averaged 0.93 kills and 0.54 digs per game. A native of Belgrade, Serbia, Bundalo earned his bachelor’s degree in business management from Park in December 2004.

Softball

By SID Intern Corey Gupton It’s not often you would expect a team to be looking to improve on an 11-5 conference record when they come into a season with a new coach. Especially when it’s a first-time head coach. But for the Park University softball team, that is just the case. The Pirates enter the 2006 campaign under the direction of first-year head coach Amy Reif. And while the deliverer may be different, the message is still the same: win the conference championship. With seven returning seniors, of the 12 total players on the roster, there is little doubt that last year’s impressive conference record is the measuring stick being held to this year’s team. “I want to exceed last year’s accomplishments and get to the conference championship,” Reif said. “We have good pitchers, including two who have performed at an all-conference level, and a lot of experience throughout our line-up. I see no reason why (the conference title) can’t be an attainable goal.” The two conference-honoree pitchers are seniors Brooke Harrison and Holly Gentry. Harrison, who was named First-Team All MCAC last season, posted a 10-9 record with a 2.59 ERA in 2005. “It’s exciting (looking at our chances this season) because we only lost a couple of people from last year,” said Harrison, who among her accomplishments a year ago, threw a no-hitter against York. “With our experience playing together, I think there’s a comfort level that comes with that and it will only help us (be successful).” Gentry, who was 9-13 last season with a 2.77 ERA, and freshman newcomer Jaime Garman, a semester transfer out of Cowley County Community College, help round out the pitching staff. In the infield, the Pirates are set with seniors at four of the five positions. Catcher, and four-year starter Trista Tomasek is back, along with Adeile Ahmu, who moves from shortstop to third base. Whitney Macdonald, who earned conference honorable mention last year, will play first base. Casey Fry will play shortstop, while the lone junior of the group, Brittany Plandor, will handle second base duties. Tomasek led the Pirates last season with 17 RBI and earned First-Team All MCAC honors. “Trista, Whitney, and Adeile will make up the heart of our lineup,” Reif said. “We will count on them for the majority of our RBI. In a lot of respects, how (those three) go, we will go offensively.” Leading the outfield is First-Team All-MCAC centerfielder Katie Immele. Along with her defense, Immele (Grandview, Mo.) is the lead-off hitter and the catalyst for the Pirate offense. “Our offense will also depend a lot on Katie,” said Reif. “With her speed and ability to at least make contact every at-bat, she’ll be the spark to our offense. We need her to consistently get on base.” Rounding out Park’s outfield are sophomores Nicole Betz (Maysville, Mo.) and Jill Prather (Kansas City, Mo.) and senior Kate Johnson (Kansas City, Mo.), who was an honorable mention all-conference pick a year ago.

-- Assistant Coach-- First Season Sara Dean begins her first season as an assis-tant softball coach at Park University. Dean brings a wealth of softball knowledge to her position with the Pirates. A four-year member of the Auburn University softball team,

she was a third-team All-American in 2004 and twice was named First-Team All-SEC. Dean led Auburn to three Regional appearances during her career. Last summer, she competed in the Inaugural World University Softball Championships, helping the United States to a gold medal by posting a .375 batting average, the second highest on the team. A native of Valencia, Calif., Dean graduated from Auburn University in December 2005 with a degree in Human Development and Family Studies. She is the daughter of Ellen and Jim Dean. Her father played baseball at Arizona State University, while her aunt Anne Dean Gardner is in the UCLA Athletic Hall of Fame as a former women’s basketball player.

Amy Reif enters her first season as the head softball coach at Park University.

Reif comes to Park with more than seven years of experience as a player and assistant coach at NCAA Division I Auburn University.

She served as a full-time assistant coach at Auburn for three and a half seasons, including the 2002 campaign when she was a member of the NCAA South Region Coaching Staff of the Year. In 2002, Auburn qualified for the school’s first NCAA Regional with a 37-28 overall record and a 15-15 mark in the Southeastern Conference. During Reif’s tenure at AU as a full-time assistant (2000-04) and one season as a graduate assistant (1999-2000), the Tigers reached the 30-win plateau on three occasions. As a player, Reif spent three seasons as an infielder at Auburn for head coach Tina Deese (1996-99) and still ranks among the school’s career leaders in sacrifice hits (2nd, 28) and games started (10th, 173). As a junior, she was named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll for her efforts in the classroom. A native of Kansas City, Kan., she started her playing career at Johnson County (Kan.) Community College in 1994, where she played one season, earning first-team all-conference honors. Reif, who worked at ESPN as a production assistant before coming to Park, received her bachelor’s degree in communications from Auburn in 1998, before obtaining her master’s degree in communications from AU in 2000. Amy and her husband, Derek, who played baseball at Auburn from 1997-2000, have a two-year-old son, Storm.

By SID Intern Chris Gaston Coming off a 22-28 record, the Park University baseball team will be looking to improve on that mark in 2006. Head Coach Cary Lundy is optimistic heading into his fourth campaign at the helm of the Pirate program. “With our deep pitching staff and experience at the plate, we have a chance to compete at a high level,” Lundy said. Eight starters return for Park, led by the experienced group of seniors Aaron Courter, John O’Rourke, Moe Mohammad, Tommy Bennett and junior Ross McCoy. Courter (Kansas City, Mo.), who was an All-America Scholar-Athlete and an Honorable Mention All-MCAC pick in 2005, has started every game in the infield since his freshman season. As a junior, he hit .388 with 24 RBI, along with team-highs of 36 runs scored and nine doubles Projected as Park’s starting second baseman, O’Rourke (Charleston, Mo.) hit .333 in 2005 with four homers and a team-best 38 RBI. Mohammad (Kansas City, Mo.), who will start in center field, hit .301 in 2005 with 18 RBI. Both were honorable mention all-conference picks last season. Also an honorable mention All-MCAC selection and an All-America Scholar-Athlete, Bennett will move to first base this season after serving as the team’s DH for much of the 2005 season. A native of Kansas City, Mo., Bennett hit .319 with five homers and 25 RBI last season. McCoy (Basehor, Kan.) led the team in hitting in 2005 with a .390 batting average. Other returning starters include senior Jason Miller (Kansas City, Mo.), senior Dusty Hylton (Platte City, Mo.) and junior Vince Sola (Kansas City, Mo.). On the mound, Lundy returns four regulars from the 2005 rotation, including Miller, senior Kevin Scobee (Kansas City, Mo.), junior Ryne Mendez (Kansas City, Kan.) and sophomore Michel Scavuzzo (Kansas City, Mo. In addition to last year’s starters, senior Kenny Theerman (Macon, Mo.) returns after sitting out 2005 with an injury. Two seasons ago, Theerman started 11 games for the Pirates, compiling a 5-3 record and a 2.52 ERA en route to receiving honorable mention all-conference laurels. The Pirates will also be counting on a talented group of newcomers to make immediate impacts in the lineup this season. Junior catcher Jon Sobbe (Jr., Kansas City, Mo.) and sophomore left-hander Bo Prather (Platte City, Mo.) both come to Park from nationally-ranked Kansas City (Kan.) Community College and are expected to see significant action this spring. Other transfers who are expected to contribute include junior first baseman Mike Gomez (Kansas City, Mo.) and junior right-hander Richard Scott (Tucson, Ariz.), while freshmen outfielders Ryan Weedin (Platte City, Mo.) and Jordan Henderson (Liberty, Mo.) will likely see significant playing time. Despite a tough non-conference and MCAC schedule, Lundy has high hopes heading into the year. “The conference is going to be very tough,” Lundy said. “Bellevue is ranked fifth in the nation, while Ottawa, York and William Jewell will be difficult games as well. Our pitching staff should help out a lot. If we stay healthy, we have a chance to be very good.”

Season Preview Cary Lundy-- Head Coach-- Fourth Season

-- Assistant Coach-- First Season A former member of the Texas Rangers’ farm system, Brian Scheetz enters his first season as an assistant baseball coach at Park University. Scheetz, a graduate of Oak Park High

Brian Renshaw-- Head Coach-- 15th Season

Head Park University track and field coach Brian Renshaw has high hopes heading into the 2006 season, despite having a 34-person roster that features 28 freshmen and sophomores. Even with the abundance of youth in the program, the Pirates are not running short on experience. Park’s women’s squad is coming off a fall cross country season in which it captured the Region IV Championship and qualified for the national meet. Leading the team were freshman Dina Yakata (Kansas City, Mo.), sophomore Sara Pitia (Independence, Mo.) and freshman Rachel Fessenden (Holt, Mich.), who finished second, third and fifth, respectively, at the region meet. Along with senior Reagan Mackey (Nassau, Bahamas), sophomore Keyon Harrison (Kansas City, Kan.) and freshman Erycka Fisher (Kansas City, Mo.), the Pirate women carried over the success into the 2006 indoor season as the 4x400 relay squad qualified for the national meet where it set a school record of time of 3:56.85. While the women will be strongest in the distance events, the Park men are expected to excel in the sprints and jumps. Talented newcomers Arries Scott (Kansas City, Mo.) and Jeramie Burns (Perris, Calif.) will be counted on to be immediate contributors in the sprints and hurdles for Park, while senior Leon Bowman (Moreno Valley, Calif.) and sophomore Charles Parker (Kansas City, Mo.) return with expe-rience in middle-distance and sprints, respectively. Sophomore Lawrence Butler (Kansas City, Mo.), sophomore Kyle Conkling (Hamilton, Mo.) and freshman Odis Smith (Kansas City, Mo.) will represent the Pirates in the jumps. In the distance events, sophomores Chris Allred (Hollister, Mo.) and Endashaw Yimer (Shashamane, Ethiopia) will be strong competitors after the duo both qualified for the national cross country meet last fall. Yimer posted the highest finish in school history at the NAIA National Cross Country Championships in 2005, taking third. Looking toward the outdoor season, Renshaw hopes his team can stay focused. “The keys for our team this season are to train hard, stay relaxed at meets, stay healthy and most importantly, enjoy the ride,” Renshaw said. “If our returners can help our newcomers buy into that, we will have a suc-cessful season.”

Season Preview

Sophomore Keyon Harrison qualified for the 2006 NAIA National Indoor Track and Field Championships in the 400-meter dash.

-- Assistant Coach-- Second Season Ron Pearl enters the second year of his second stint as an assistant coach with the track and field and cross country programs at Park University. Pearl previously served as an assistant at

Park in the early 1980s. A 1982 graduate of Park in economics and business administration, Pearl qualified for the 1980 indoor nationals semifinals in the 60-yard dash. In addition to his track & field career, he had a short playing career with the Ottawa Roughriders of the Canadian Football League. Pearl resides in Parkville, Mo., and works as a customer service agent for Continental Airlines.

Ron Pearl

Brian Renshaw enters his 15th season as the head coach of the cross country and track & field programs at Park.

In that time, Renshaw has sustained Park’s reputation as a perennial contender in running sports since the early 1980s. Under Renshaw,

Park’s teams have placed high at the conference and regional levels and have regularly received top-20 national rankings from the NAIA. Along the way, the Pirates have broken more than 100 school records in Renshaw’s term as head coach. Before coaching at Park, Renshaw coached at Tarkio College where he also directed a winning program. In four years at Tarkio, Renshaw won four consecutive conference titles. Renshaw has coached more than 100 All-Americans. His peers have recognized him by voting him conference, district, or regional coach of the year 25 times. Renshaw is a graduate of Baker University and lives in Platte City, Mo., with his wife Candi.

2006 Park University Spring Sports Guide

After winning two of its four tournaments during the fall season, the Park University women’s golf team will try to carryover that success as it enters its 2006 spring campaign. The Pirates, who are guided by third-year Head Coach Kelly DeFeo, return all four starters from last season’s squad, which took second place at the 2005 MCAC Championships and qualified for the Region IV Championships. This season, Park has already captured tournament titles at William Jewell College’s and Avila University’s fall invitationals. Individually, the Pirates are paced by junior Katie Johnson (Bonner Springs, Kan.) and sophomore Ashley Nicks (St. Louis, Mo.). Both Johnson and Nicks are former MCAC Players of the Year as each claimed individual medalist honors at the conference championships in 2004 and 2005, respectively. Nicks, who won the MCAC meet as a freshman last season, was also Park highest finisher at the 2005 Region IV Championships, taking fifth. The 2004 conference player of the year, Johnson took second at the 2005 MCAC Championships, just two shots off the pace of Nicks. Rounding out the returning starters are junior Sarah Molina (Kansas City, Mo.) and sophomore Amy Hollander (Piper, Kan.), who took 10th at the 2005 conference championships. Joining the team this season is freshman Nichole Wessel (Spring Hill, Kan.). Wessel became the first player in the history of the Spring Hill High School girl’s golf program to qualify for the state tournament last year. “I’m looking forward to the spring season,” DeFeo said. “The girls have been a lot more focused this year than they have been in past seasons,” DeFeo said. “Because of that, I believe they will be up to the challenge. We should have a great spring.”

Season Preview Kelly DeFeo-- Head Coach-- Third Season Kelly DeFeo is entering her third season as the head women’s golf coach at Park University.

In the program’s first season of existence in 2003-04, DeFeo guided then-freshman Katie

Johnson to an MCAC Individual Championship en route to being named the conference’s Player of the Year. Last season, she did the same for then-freshman Ashley Nicks, who also was named MCAC Player of the Year. As a team in 2004-05, the Pirates took second place at the MCAC Championships. A Class A PGA member with the Midwest Section since 1995, DeFeo’s impressive work record includes having been a teaching professional at the Robin Nigro Golf Academy in Kansas City, Mo. She has also served seasonally as a teaching professional at the Eldorado Country Club in Indian Wells, Calif., as an assistant professional at Tiffany Greens in Kansas City, Mo., and as the assistant/head golf professional at Mission Hills Country Club in Mission Hills, Kan. DeFeo’s vast professional golf experience includes workshops with the PGA and USGA on rules and tournament administration, fitting seminars and short game seminars. She conducted clinics and individual lessons for the UMKC women’s golf program in 1997 and served as the chairperson for Sectional Junior Girls’ Events in 1991. DeFeo is a contributing writer for Tee Times monthly magazine. DeFeo and her husband, Chuck, reside in Kansas City, Mo.

Sophomore Amy Hollander finished in 10th place at the 2005 MCAC Championships.

Sophomore Ashley Nicks was named MCAC Player of the Year in 2005 after taking individual medalist honors at the conference meet.
