a word from the president

interim president

joe hatcher

Change has been the theme for the presidential candidates of both parties in this election year. They could have visited the PA campus for an excellent example of change for the better and to see how change can be managed eff ectively and with excellent results.

In the 1990’s, I served on the PA Board and have spent little time on the campus since, ex-cept for going through the drop-off or pick-up line to deliver or retrieve my grandchildren. When I returned to the campus late this summer to assume my role as interim president, I was astonished by the complete physical transformation of the institution I knew as PA.

From two classroom buildings and a gym, PA has become a campus that feels more like a college than a school. In one summer, two separate physical plants that served diff erent purposes became a single institution devoted to educating young people. In a remark-ably short time, facilities were renovated and re-shaped to provide teachers who had long worked in cramped quarters with state-of-the art educational spaces. From a school where students from 3 to 18 had been elbow-to-elbow, PA has become a campus where Early Childhood, Lower, Middle, and Upper School students each have their own space—and yet the four entities comfortably share common spaces and interact productively. Seniors easily move to the Early Childhood classrooms to serve as senior brothers and sisters to the smaller children, but each age has wonderful classrooms designed for their particular needs—all on one campus.

PA has made great strides in a very short period of time. For the fi rst time in many years, the school has facilities that are worthy of the quality of the faculty and the academic program. There is still work to be done, but PA has made a quantum leap.

You who are recognized in this annual report for your contributions of time, your work with our students, and your fi nancial support have made these gains possible. The stu-dents of PA and all of us who work here on campus with them are grateful to you for your generosity. Yes, there is still work to be done, and we will be calling on you for additional help. We must continue to improve our programs, we must continue to grow the annual fund, and we must provide for additional capital needs. But much has been accomplished, and you can feel great pride in the “new” PA.

a year of changeThe 2007-08 school year was one of excitement,

activity, and anticipation like no other in PA history.

After two years of meeting upon meeting with FBC

representatives, city offi cials, architects, Board members,

and PA families, the school was fi nally ready to break

ground on its campus expansion project. Construction

crews, sheetrockers, and painters were welcome

additions to our little campus community as the school

year was coming to a

close.

And that’s when the

magic really began.

The Pulaski Academy Campus Master Plan was fi nalized.

2007-08 MILESTONESsummer 2007

The multi-phased Campus Master Plan was unveiled. Phase One would address campus expansion and renovation to be implemented by Summer 2008. Phase Two would identify additional renovation and campus projects for the future.Architects undertook design work for classroom renovation and other Phase One renovations.

With under $625,000 to go, the fi nish line for this phase of the campaign is defi nitely in sight! But we still need your help to go that last mile. We are grateful to two donors who have stepped forward to inspire others to join in on the philanthropic action and see to it that we reach our goal.

8 | Where We Stand Now

WE’RE ALMOST THERE! With a goal of $5.6 million for Phase 1 of the campus

expansion, we are proud to announce that the capital campaign has raised

85% of its goal for a total of $4.97 million to date.

THE MILLION DOLLAR CHALLENGE!To help PA reach its capital campaign goal and to encourage families to par-ticipate, an anonymous donor stepped forward last spring with a Million Dollar Challenge. This exciting challenge will match every new capital gift or pledge dollar for dollar. To date, the school has received $376,000 in new gifts toward the Million Dollar Challenge, with $624,000 of the challenge still to earn.

With the $1,000,000 Capital Campaign Challenge and the $100,000 Name a

Seat Challenge, your gifts MORE THAN EVER can make a signifi cant diff erence

in the lives of PA students!

A wide range of naming and underwrit-ing opportunities are available to donors who would like to help the school, leave a legacy, and help earn the $1,000,000 Challenge all at the same time! From naming a building to underwriting a classroom, every gift will be matched by the challenge. For more information on naming and underwriting opportunities, contact Jeanie Berna, Head of Advance-ment, at 604-1938 or via email at [email protected].

NAMING OPPORTUNITIES STILL ABOUND!

DOUBLE CHALLENGE ANNOUNCED!An anonymous donor inspired by the $1,000,000 Capital Campaign Challenge has issued a second $100,000 Challenge for the Name a Seat Campaign! Make a gift or pledge of $250, $500, or $1000, and your gift will be matched by BOTH challenges for a total impact of $750, $1500 or $3000, respectively.

NAME A SEAT CAMPAIGNInterested in supporting the Capital campaign while leaving a lasting impres-sion on the PA campus? Then consider naming a seat in honor or memory of a beloved family member, a favorite teacher or coach, your student, or soon-to-be graduate.

Play a starring role in support of PA! With a gift of $1000, you will name a seat in the orchestra section of the Connor Performing Arts Center. And with the double challenge in place, your gift will have an impact of $3000!

ovation level

Make a statement! With a gift of $500, you will not only say, “I support PA,” but you will name a seat in the side fl oor section of the Performing Arts Center. And because of the double challenge, your gift will have a total impact of $1500!

encore level

Show your support with a $250 donation! Your gift will earn you a named seat in the outer fl oor sections or the balcony. And with the double challenge in place, your gift will translate into $750 toward our school’s future!

questions? For more information, go to the Support the Mission section of our site > Campaign for PA > Building a Foundation: Capital Gifts > Name a Seat in the Connor Performing Arts Center. Here, you’ll not only fi nd a seating chart for the auditorium, but you can download a Name a Seat form. Contact Mary Cavin, Standing Ovation Chair, at 501.353.0132 or Bonna Schulte, Assistant Director of Advancement, at 501.604.1913 for additional information.

supportfor the future

As a seat donor, your name - or the name of someone you choose to honor - will be engraved on a permanent brass plate on a seat in the Connor Performing Arts Center.

Naming a seat is a fantastic way to mark a birthday, holiday, or special accom-plishment, or it’s also the perfect way to remember or honor a student, teacher, coach, or loved one. Your gift is fully deductible and supports the campus expansion.

CORE VALUE AWARDS

In addition to being selected as one of only twenty teachers from across the U.S. to participate in the Brown University Summer Program on Iran, Upper School Social Sci-ence teacher and department chair Bill Topich also signed a book deal with Greenwood Press to author A History of Myan-mar.

bill topich

From the day that students begin their PA educational journey, our faculty and staff begin working diligently to instill in them our four Core Values: Respect, Responsibil-ity, Integrity, and Excellence. One of the most important ways that teachers and staff members instill these values in our students is by modeling them and living as an example. Shirley Nichols and Angie Johnson were the 2007-08 Core Value Award recipients.

The success of many of the programs and activities at PA is a direct result

of the willingness of parents, alumni, and friends to give so much of their

time and energy. During the 2007-08 academic year, virtually every area of

the school benefi ted from the hard work and dedication of volunteers who

donated more than 47,000 hours of their time.

No matter the activity or program, PA volunteers can be found rolling up their sleeves, leading, organizing, decorat-ing, cleaning, serving, selling, and even working the concession stand at Bruin sporting events!

FACULTY/STAFF GIVINGPulaski Academy is truly blessed to have a dedicated group of faculty and staff , willing to give freely of their time and talents, whether in the classroom, on the playground, or in an admin-istrative offi ce. Even more amazing is how their giving spirits transcend their job duties, prompting them to support PA’s future on a completely diff erent level: with their paychecks. Pulaski Academy thanks its many faculty and staff members who took their generosity one step further and contributed to the 2007-08 Annual Fund.
