N aomi Iizuka has written a wonderful modern adaptation of The Odyssey, Homer’s epic tale of a man’s difficult journey home. This play premiered in 2006 at the Minneapolis Children’s Theatre, and

is hot off the press, so to speak. She places her play in America now, and gives us a hero who is searching for his inner home, for re-unification with his family, for his sense of identity. He meets challenges and must overcome obstacles on his journey, like Odysseus, and the parallels are many. As in the original, his mother is hounded by a suitor, he meets a modern day ‘cyclops,’ and he meets a Calypso and a Circe, who try to lure him into complacency and comfort, urging him to drop his quest. He gets help from a goddess. He is named Anonymous at times, Anon at others, and Nobody. He is a faceless refugee in America, whose special story is not obvious at first glance. He is a hero.

The topic of immigration is one of the most singularly polarizing in America today. It is a topic about which most Americans have strong opinions. I hear voices urging a closing of our borders, arguing about the disintegration of America due to the influx of refugees and immigrants, both legal and illegal. I hear other voices urging amnesty and acceptance.

Whether by fate, luck, circumstance or chance, many in America are living lives that parallel our hero Anon. They are here, and they are searching for identity on our shores, for ways to make this country home.

We are glad that you are in our audience, supporting CCM Drama as we present this new work, as students and audience alike create dialogue about what it means to be an American today.

“Where I come from is where I came from.”

- Richard E. Hess

MMax and Judi Redlich are regulars, both in the arenas of the UC Bearcats and in the theaters of CCM. Their joint passion led to planned gifts benefitting both programs.

“We believe in the importance of a college education. We’ve really been impressed by CCM students, and we’re glad to be able to support that kind of talent. There’s no limit to what they can do.”

A planned gift to CCM can support scholarships like the Redlichs’, provide for faculty and facility needs, and ensure the CCM tradition of achievement for years to come. Your gift today can help make dreams come alive.
