Bird Studies Canada is very pleased to have renowned Canadian Wildlife Artist David N. Kitler as the 2007 Guest
Artist. David’s love of nature shows in the beauty and detail of his work. David is a member of the Society of
Animal Artists and the Worldwide Nature Artist Group. To his acclaim, he has received a number of Best of Show
and Excellence awards from some of North America’s major art shows. We hope that you enjoy this year’s shirt of
the Osprey Juvenile Preliminary Sketch as much as we do!

Registering is easy! Just fill in the green registration form
accompanying your kit and send it to BSC right away. By
registering, you will automatically receive your official
BIRDATHON t-shirt (a donation of $15 to cover this cost would
be greatly appreciated). On the registration form you can
designate some of the money you raise to a conservation
organization of your choice. Register by May 5 to be eligible
for the Early Bird Prize.
You can be sponsored at a flat rate or per species identified.
How? Just ask your friends, relatives, co-workers and
neighbours to help support your cause. We continue to make
sponsoring through e-mail easy. Each BIRDATHON participant
will be assigned a unique web link to share with potential
sponsors. Potential sponsors can click on this link to sponsor
a participant online by using their credit card. Participants
will be immediately informed, via e-mail, when a donation
has been made in their name.
Try to personalize each request and thank you. Sharing your
enthusiasm and reporting on your experience afterwards goes
a long way to cultivate loyal sponsors.
Sponsors will automatically receive an income tax receipt for
all donations of $10.00 or more (Canadian Registered Charity
No. 119024313RR0001). Receipts are mailed in September and
January.
Now the fun part. Pick a day in May and go birding. You
don’t need to be an expert about birds; everyone’s efforts are
important. You can spend part of a day, or a whole day (up to
24 consecutive hours), and check off the species you see on the
enclosed checklist. Some helpful birding hints are provided
on the back of your official species checklist.
Bird Studies Canada’s (BSC’s) Baillie BIRDATHON is the oldest sponsored bird count in North
America, raising money for bird research and conservation. The challenge is to identify as
many bird species as possible within a 24-hour period, during the month of May. The money
raised benefits Bird Studies Canada, the James L. Baillie Memorial Fund, and participating
migration monitoring stations and conservation organizations (designated by participants to
receive a portion of funds raised).

Collect your pledge money quickly (some sponsors prefer to pay
a flat rate up front while others may sponsor on a per species
basis). An easy way to collect pledges from sponsors is to send a
letter describing your adventure and indicating
how much your sponsors owe (this can be done through e-mail).
Photocopying your checklist on the back of your
letter is a good way of letting your sponsors know what you saw.
If you get your letter out right after your , you will
find that the majority of your money comes in very quickly.
Submitting your pledge money to Bird Studies Canada is easy
with a few basic principles to keep in mind. DO NOT SEND
CASH IN THE MAIL! If sponsors pay with cash, simply write a
cheque for the cash amounts and indicate on the Pledge Sheet
who has made the cash payments. Cheques should be made
payable to “Bird Studies Canada” but if a sponsor has made out
a cheque in your name, don't worry, just sign the back and send it
in.
Collect your pledge money quickly as sponsors appreciate their
cheques cashed quickly. Cheques become stale-dated after six
months. If a sponsor wishes to send their money directly to BSC,
please ask them to indicate on the cheque who the pledge is for. If
you are sending in money in separate batches, be sure to check
off which pledge money is included with the current batch (with
a coloured pen so we can see the new entries) that you are
mailing.
Make sure you submit your completed forms with sponsor
money by August 1 to be eligible for prizes. Your odds of
winning a prize are fantastic!!

BIRDATHON Revenue Sharing 2006Where does the money go?
Jim Baillie worked as Assistant Curator in the Department of Ornithology at the Royal Ontario Museum for nearly 50 years. Although not formally educated in ornithology, Baillie’s knowledge of birds was unsurpassed, and he willingly shared his knowledge with thousands of people, amateurs and professionals alike, through newspaper columns, scientific publications, bird hikes, and informal conversations with countless visitors to his museum office.
James L. Baillie 1905-1970
Bird Studies Canada (BSC) is the country’s national bird research and conservation organization. Our mission is to advance the understanding, appreciation, and conservation of wild birds and their habitats.
Conducting local, regional, national, and international programs, Bird Studies Canada advances bird conservation with professional staff, a National Science Advisory Council of prominent ornithologists and conservation partners, an active Board of Directors, and thousands of volunteers across Canada. To learn more about BSC, please visit our web site at www.bsc-eoc.org.
The James L. Baillie Memorial Fund is administered by Bird Studies Canada. Originally established in 1976 to support bird research and conservation efforts across Canada, priority is given to those projects that involve amateur naturalists who do not have access to other sources of financial support. It is funded primarily by the Baillie BIRDATHON, with 17% of annual BIRDATHON proceeds being made available for grants in the following year.
It depends … revenue allocation is determined, in part, by the participants. You can raise money strictly for Bird Studies Canada (which we greatly appreciate!), or you can designate another conservation organization to receive a portion of the funds (e.g., your local birding or naturalist club, or a Canadian Migration Monitoring Network station). Read on for details. Of the dollars raised, 17% is directed to the James L. Baillie Memorial Fund (CMMN-designated funds excepted).
The pie graph depicted here reflects revenue allocations in 2006. In total, $195,671 was raised.

Canadian Migration Monitoring Network3
Participants can designate a Canadian Migration Monitoring Network (CMMN) station to receive a portion of the funds
they raise through the BIRDATHON. CMMN stations benefit tremendously from this revenue sharing, especially from each dollar raised above $4000 (90% is returned to the station). To learn more about the CMMN, please visit www.bsc-eoc.org/national.html.
The Baillie BIRDATHON is a great opportunity for conservation clubs to raise money for special
projects. You can direct some of the BIRDATHON funds you raise to the conservation club of your choice. This option becomes particularly lucrative once your club’s participants are raising more than $5000 (above which 50% is returned). All you have to do is tell us, on the Registration Form, which club you would like to direct some of your money to and we will send that club a cheque in the fall, once all the money arrives. Be sure to include all of the club’s details on the Registration Form. The club shares are calculated using the profit-sharing system described below. BSC covers the cost of administration, issuing receipts and the kit materials.
BIRDATHON funds to maintain and update their website as well as help with the cost of their publication, The Migration Chronicle. This financial assistance will help with the promotion and circulation of the organization’s results to the public.
In 2006, money was allocated to 84 conservation clubs across Canada for everything from maintaining and purchasing significant habitat; to promoting youth programs; to supporting Christmas Bird Counts. The Observatoire D’Oiseaux de Tadoussac in Quebec uses

You don’t need to be an expert birder to do a BIRDATHON. Here are some tips on how to get the most out of your BIRDATHON day.
If you want to see a lot of species, it’s a good idea to have your chosen day coincide with the peak of migration in your region of the country. If you’re not sure of this, check with your local naturalist club – they may even have scheduled field trips that would fit into your BIRDATHON plans.
Birds utilize a variety of habitats. Try to visit as many habitats as possible. Knowledgeable birders in your local club can point you to your area’s hot spots. Visit our website at www.bsc-eoc.org/lpbo/sightings.html. Many book stores or clubs also have a guide to the best birding locations.
To join a guided birding event, check to see if a birding festival is planned nearby. Some festivals and tours are listed at the following web sites: www.americanbirdcenter.com (search by province) and the International Migratory Bird Day web site www.birdday.org.
Don’t rule out doing your BIRDATHON on a foreign vacation. Many participants do this and we love to hear about their adventures!
It’s fun to do a BIRDATHON with friends. More eyes and ears certainly find more birds, while sharing the day’s experiences increases the enjoyment and adds to the memories.
Don’t feel you need to tally a big bird list or sponsor list to be successful in BIRDATHON. The BIRDATHON motto is: “HAVE FUN!”
Birding Hints for Your BIRDATHON
If you participated in BIRDATHON last year, you will receive personalized Pledge Sheets with all past sponsors (from the last 3 years) listed on them.
New participants can use the blank Pledge Sheet on the previous page (photocopy as needed or call us to request more).
Please return these personalized sheets with your payment.
Please Print Clearly at all Times
PLEASE DO NOT SEND CASH IN THE MAIL
Bird Studies Canada, PO Box 160, Port Rowan, ON N0E 1M0Phone (Toll-free): 1-888-448-2473 Fax: 519-586-3532
E-mail: [email protected]
Leave the first column (ID #) blank, unless you happen to know your sponsor’s ID#.
If you have previous years’ sponsors, personalized Pledge Sheets will be included with your kit. The only names and addresses you
have to add are new ones. Fill out new sponsors’ names and complete address information clearly. Include their e-mail address if your sponsor would like to receive Bird Studies Canada’s e-newsletter, Latest News. Receipts will automatically be issued for all donations of $10 or more, unless otherwise specified by your sponsors, and are mailed in September and January.
Fill in either the amount they pledge per species or the flat amount. If your sponsor fills out their own name and address, make sure they print clearly. If they prefer to receive communications in French, check that box.
Fill out the “Amount Paid” box when you actually receive the money. In the end, if no money is received from that sponsor, leave this box blank.
All sponsors of $35 or more are considered a “Supporter” of Bird Studies Canada and will receive quarterly issues of Bird Studies Canada’s publication, BirdWatch Canada, for one year.
Although we prefer money to be submitted in one batch, you may need to submit several batches (about one per month) to avoid cheques becoming stale-dated. Photocopy your completed Pledge Sheets and submit them with each batch. Make sure the “Amount Paid” and “Check if in this batch” boxes are filled out for the donations submitted in that batch. Please use a coloured ink other than black (black ink is difficult to distinguish from photocopies of previous submissions).
If you are submitting all of your money at once, photocopy your Pledge Sheets for your own records and submit the originals with your money.
Send a personal cheque or money order for the cash you collected. We also accept Visa, MasterCard, and American Express payments for your convenience.
All cheques submitted should be made payable to “Bird Studies Canada”. If cheques have been made out to your name by mistake, simply endorse the back and send them in.
If sponsors wish to send their cheques directly to Bird Studies Canada, ask them to indicate on the cheque who the donation is for (i.e., in the memo portion of the cheque).
Ensure that the amount of money submitted is equal to the total of the donations submitted in each batch. If there is a difference, include a brief note of explanation.
If you encounter a problem, do not hesitate to contact us (ask for Kris or Beth). We’re here to help!
Contact us for additional Pledge Sheets or feel free to photocopy a blank one.
If their name or address appears incorrectly, make appropriate changes.

BIRDATHON: A QUICK SUMMARY
RegisterSend in your green registration form or register online. (A donation to cover your t-shirt cost is
greatly appreciated.)
Find SponsorsTrack down those friends and acquaintances that
appreciate our feathered friends, such as those who are generally conservation-minded (and, of course,
those who just plain like you!).
Go BirdingIn that magical month of May, when the
meadows, woods, and shorelines are filled with birds and birdsong, spend up to 24 hours and
note the species you see.
Collect PledgesWhile many sponsors pay upfront, you will need
to follow up on some pledges. Of course, all sponsors will eagerly await your birding report.
Official, fun, or just plain funny - your Birdathon day highlights should be shared.
Submit MoneyAn essential step - sponsor money is to be
mailed to Bird Studies Canada. We’ll issue tax receipts to all your sponsors of $10 or more.
Sponsors of $35 or more will receive quarterly issues of BirdWatch Canada for one year.
Win Fabulous PrizesAn all-inclusive guided trip, top-notch binoculars, cameras, spotting scope, an elegantly framed Chris
Bacon print and many more. Your chances of winning a prize are awesome!
