Student Shadowing

November 26 through December 19 (note: high school late start on December 13)

Recommend parents or school staff call to make the appointment All calls should be returned, even if the call was made by a

student 8th grade students need to understand this is not a “day off” – they

need to follow the rules and behavior expectations of the high school

Shadowing

Gives students opportunity to experience a “day in the life”

Best when student is not sure if he/she wants this high school as a choice

Parents responsible for transportation Students responsible for missed work District recommends 2 days allowed as excused

absence November 26 through December 19

All performance based entrance criteria has been eliminated

Request form – self mailer Students choose both a high school AND a

program of study Can be mailed or faxed directly to Student

Placement Must be postmarked before or on January

How do we request a high school?

Have a family discussion! Request cards will be available beginning November

12 Requesting a high school and a program of study

– Example: 1st and 2nd choice are both South, 1st choice is Liberal Arts, 2nd choice is Open

Return request cards directly to Student Placement by mail or fax

Must be postmarked on or before January 15

Bilingual & Low Level ESL Support (based on language and address)– Edison – Somali, Spanish– North – Hmong– Roosevelt – Somali, Spanish

High Level ESL Support – all high schools Determination of support by test scores,

current level of support and teacher recommendation

Special Education Placements

Federal Setting 1 & 2 have same high school options as general education students – majority of MPS SE students in this category

Federal Setting 3 & 4 (citywide programs) – placement based on IEP transition process. Placement determined by Special Education Department

Notification & Appeal Process

Welcome letters will be mailed by Student Placement during the week of March 3rd

Appeals due April 15th – families will be notified by mid-May

Student Placement will maintain wait lists
