Eastview High School National Honor Society

HistoryNational Honor Society was formed in 1919 when a proposal by J.G. Masters, a principal at Central High School in Omaha, Nebraska, was adopted at the National Association of Secondary School Principals convention. Within the proposal, Character, Leadership, Scholarship, and Service were chosen as the “fundamental virtues most worthy of encouragement” in young people. The first chapter was established at Fifth Avenue High School in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on June 15, 1922, under the leadership of Dr. Edward Rynearson. The Eastview High School chapter of National Honor Society was established in September, 1997, under the leadership of then Principal, Dr. J. Richard Dewey.

Official CreedI believe in the joy of study, the delight of acquaintance with books, the discipline of diligent learning and the rediscovery of the world of nature and of humanity through an open mind.

I believe in character as essential to the highest type of scholarship. I hold that no intellectual achievement, however keen or clever, is worthy of deep respect unless it goes hand in hand with accuracy, reliability, honor, humility, tolerance, and truth.

I believe in service, that it is the privilege and responsibility of the enlightened member of any society to minister with kindness and understanding to the needs of the less fortunate in talent or in opportunity.

I rejoice in the burden of leadership which scholarship, character, and service lay upon me, for I believe that my torch should light others to lives of greater beauty, richer joy, and fuller service.

Official MottoNoblesse Oblige – “nobility obligates” or in other words, “to whom much is given, much is expected.” In broader terms, it signifies that those of high rank have the obligation to behave honorably, generously, and responsibly to others.

Official InsigniaThe emblem of this society is the keystone and flaming torch. The keystone bears at its base the letters “C,” “S,” “L,” and “S,” which stand for the four cardinal principles of this organization: character, scholarship, leadership, and service.

As the keystone is placed by the builder to hold the perfect arch in perpetual stability, so the structure of our education must be held firm and true to the purposes of life by the virtues represented in this symbol.

The flaming torch is symbolic of our purpose to bear forward the searching light of truth, to lead that others may follow in the light, to keep burning in our school a high ambition for the enduring values of life, and to serve with unselfish loyalty to truth and honor.

Official ColorsThe official colors of National Honor Society are sky blue and gold. The colors are symbolic of a brilliant sun in a clear blue sky. More formally, the blue is the representative color of education scholars and the gold represents excellence.

Official FlowersWhile the official flower of the National Honor Society is the yellow rose, our chapter also uses the following flower colors for the Induction Ceremony: -White: symbolic of purity and truth from which comes character. -Pink: symbolic of wisdom and the value of scholarship. -Purple: a regal color symbolic of leadership. -Red: brings to mind bravery and courage, symbolic of service.

Official QuotesThe following quotes, representing each of the four pillars of National Honor Society, have been selected by our chapter to serve as sources of inspiration:

ScholarshipThe function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically… Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education. –Martin Luther King, Jr.

LeadershipGood leaders make people feel that they’re at the very heart of things, not at the periphery. Everyone feels that he or she makes a difference to the success of the organization. When that happens people feel centered and that gives their work meaning. –Warren G. Bennis

CharacterI am responsible. Although I may not be able to prevent the worst from happening, I am responsible for my attitude toward the inevitable misfortunes that darken life. Bad things do happen; how I respond to them defines my character and the quality of my life. I can choose to sit in perpetual sadness, immobilized by the gravity of my loss, or I can choose to rise from the pain and treasure the most precious gift I have; life itself. –Walter Anderson

ServiceI don’t know what your destiny will be, but one thing I know: the only ones among you who will be really happy are those who have sought and found how to serve. –Albert Schweitzer

Official SongThe song One by U2, has been selected by our chapter to serve as a message of inspiration. Furthermore, our chapter officially endorses the “One Campaign” to end poverty: www.one.org

Expectations for members

Monthly meetingsOur chapter meets formally once a month and members MUST arrive early and attend every meeting. Please refer to the meeting schedule to determine your meeting place and time. Attendance is recorded at every meeting and the attendance is reported in the monthly minutes. If you should miss a meeting because of an illness or some other event, you must contact the chapter Secretary to explain your absence. Members who fall short of this commitment or struggle to attend meetings, will be dismissed from the chapter.

CommunicationWe have a large chapter that is very active in our community. Since we meet only once a month formally, much of the information concerning chapter activities and opportunities is communicated via email and the NHS Blog. Members MUST check their email and the NHS Blog at least once a day. The BLOG site is: eastviewnhs.blogspot.com

ScholarshipMembers are expected to continue to have a positive disposition and influence in the classroom and demonstrate excellence of scholarship. Member’s habits of scholarship are audited each quarter through a faculty email questionnaire to assure that a standard of scholarship excellence is maintained and the integrity of our chapter is not compromised.

ServiceThe minimum service requirement for members of our chapter is 15 hours per semester, 6 of which must be Eastview hours, which are service opportunities that are organized by the chapter. Members may use hours from the summer preceeding the academic year toward their first semester requirement. Members are encouraged to perform service beyond the minimum requirement. Furthermore, members MUST follow through on their commitments; if you have signed-up for an opportunity you need to honor your commitment or find an appropriate replacement. Service hours are due in December and again in May and members MUST turn in their “Service Hours Form” on time or risk being dismissed from the chapter.

International Rhodes ScholarsThe Rhodes Scholarships were established in 1903 by Cecil Rhodes, who dreamed of improving the world through the diffusion of leaders motivated to serve their contemporaries, trained in the contemplative life of the mind, and broadened by their acquaintance with one another and by their exposure to cultures different from their own. Mr. Rhodes hoped that his plan of bringing able students from throughout the English-speaking world and beyond to study at Oxford University would aid in the promotion of international understanding and peace. Each year, 32 U.S. citizens are among more than 90 Rhodes Scholars worldwide who take up degree courses at Oxford University in England.
