ANNUAL REPORT 2014

INTRODUCTION FROM THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE

INTRODUCTION FROM THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE

This year has been one of signifi cant investment in the

business. In November 2013 we acquired Dundee University

Press, the fi rst acquisition the Press has made for many years.

The Dundee list brings with it a number of key law texts

which will underpin our law publishing, together with books

in Scottish History and Oil & Gas – the latter a growing area

of publishing which we are looking at exploiting. In January

we moved to new offi ces at The Tun, Holyrood Road. These

new modern and open-plan premises have been welcomed

by our 32 staff and given the Press a much more business-

orientated environment in which to work. Finally, in terms of

investment we appointed two new commissioning editors to

drive forward our commissioning – particularly in textbooks.

We also appointed a new marketing manager to help

spearhead our promotion campaigns in North America where

we began our new relationship with Oxford University Press.

In 2013–14 we saw a continuation of economic

uncertainty and diffi cult market conditions – particularly

in key regions like Europe. I am pleased to report, though,

that the last fi nancial year has been a good one for the

Press with sales growth in most of our major markets and

profi tability holding up well despite the investment in

the business mentioned above. Particularly encouraging

was our performance in North America through Oxford

University Press, vindicating our decision to move our sales,

marketing and distribution to them in August last year.

We also performed well in China and in Japan and saw an

improved year in India.

We published over 145 new books in 2013–14, a record

for the Press. As you can see in this report, the quality of

these publications is excellent and we are well supported

by the Press Committee, chaired by Professor Ewen

Cameron, which provides unique and benefi cial support to

our editorial team.

The journals business has delivered another excellent

year in revenues and profi ts. It is a hugely important part

of Edinburgh University Press in what is an increasingly

competitive market. We are working hard to bring more

journals on board and are looking to acquire where we can

see opportunities.

We operate in a global market place that is continuing

to change at an alarming speed. In areas like digital

publishing and Open Access we need, as a small publisher,

to be aware of the challenges and opportunities that these

changes are bringing. To that end we have introduced

Open Access policies for both monographs and journals

and towards the end of the fi nancial year we agreed to fund

our fi rst Open Access journal. On the digital side, we have

continued to make our books available in simultaneous

digital and print formats and now have over 1,000 scholarly

and professional titles available in digitised form. It is worth

reminding ourselves, however, that print sales still make up

90% of our revenues and indeed grew signifi cantly last year

whilst there are some indications of E sales plateauing.

Despite all these challenges – both external and internal

– our year-on-year sales growth was 10%. Our surplus

before interest was £161,000. We have an exciting year

ahead with another record number of new publications

and more investment in key systems to ensure we meet the

challenging targets that we have set ourselves in 2014–15.

ETOTEL-Advanced series with the publication of four new

textbooks in the series: English Historical Pragmatics by

Andreas Jucker and Irma Taavitsainen, Construction Grammar

and its Application to English by Marin Hilpert, Morphological

Theory by Jan Don and A Historical Phonology of English by

Donka Minkova.

Social Interaction in Second Language Chat RoomsChris Jenks

The fi rst book to publish in

the new Edinburgh Studies in

Social Interaction series, aimed

at postgraduate level students

in Applied Linguistics and early

career researchers focused on

implications of the author’s research and follow the three-

part structure of survey, analysis and applications.

FILM

American Postfeminist CinemaMichele Schreiber

This is the fi rst book to publish in the

new Traditions in American Cinema

series, which is a companion series

to our fl agship Traditions in World

Cinema series.

Men’s CinemaStella Bruzzi

This book provides a new intervention

into gender debates by paying close

attention to fi lm aesthetics and mise-

en-scène. Professor Bruzzi is a world-

renowned expert on masculinity and

cinema and her book is already being

considered an essential read within

Film Studies.

BOOK PUBLISHING 201314

There has been important investment in the books business this year with the recruitment of two new commissioning editors

in Linguistics and Politics, and the acquisition of Dundee University Press, which has added signifi cantly to our Law list in

particular. Most editors are now focused on one core list each, allowing them to build strength through depth. Additional

editorial support is also giving more time to the editors to develop more sustainable revenue-generating textbooks and

reference volumes. The benefi ts of these investments are expected to be seen over the next fi ve years as both our title output

and revenue generated per title increase.

KEY REVIEWS

LINGUISTICS

Review of The Sociolinguistics of Writing

by Theresa Lillis, in Written Language

and Literacy:

‘An ambitious and intelligently designed overview of the scientifi c discourse related to writing and sociolinguistics.’

Review of The Edinburgh Companion to

the Gaelic Language edited by Moray

Watson and Michelle Macleod, in

The Journal of Scottish Name Studies:

‘The 14 essays of this volume guide readers through the history and development of the Gaelic language in Scotland and in North America, with a focus on Gaelic as a distinct

branch of Celtic Studies. Contributors link traditional modes of scholarship with more recent research in social sciences and theoretical linguistics; they grapple with language decline and critically examine revitalisation efforts. The book is indeed a Companion, providing a well-researched survey of key topics in Gaelic language, literature and society and offering stimulating ideas for future research.’

FILM

Review of Post-beur Cinema by

Will Higbee, in French Studies:

‘This is a major study of one of the most exciting and vital areas of contemporary French cinema. Will Higbee has excellent knowledge of Maghrebi-French and North African émigré fi lmmaking and proves a reliable and enlightening guide.’

Review of Selling the Splat Pack by

Mark Bernard, in New Statesman:

‘By focusing on fi lm cycles and their modes of production, Selling the Splat Pack broadens the terms of discussion and helps liberate the genre from the dungeon of worthy cultural interpretation.’

Review of Far-Flung Families in Film by

Daniela Berghahn, in

Transnational Cinemas:

‘The beautifully illustrated Far-Flung Families in Film is a milestone in the study of diasporic fi lm and “accented cinema” (Hamid Nafi cy), and it also marks a particularly original and much-

needed contribution to transnational cinema studies. I would warmly recommend Daniela Berghahn’s book to scholars, students, makers, promoters and critics of fi lm as well as to learned cinema-goers.’

CLASSICS

Review of Sex and Sexuality in

Classical Athens by James Robson, in

The Classical Review:

‘Few topics are as inherently interesting as sex, and few areas of inquiry have spurred more heated debate among scholars, particularly in the last 30 years. In many ways, R.’s book is a splendid addition to

these ongoing discussions. Indeed, the 144 pages that make up the “debates” section of the book constitute the single best discussion of Athenian sexual life currently available for non-experts . . . I recommend this book to novices and scholars alike for its sensitive treatment of sources and brilliant condensation of complex scholarly debates.’

BOOK PUBLISHING 201314

Review of The Edinburgh History of the

Greeks, c. 500 to 1050 by Florin Curta,

in Sehepunkte:

‘A highly informative collection of both archaeological and literary data. Curta presents the reader with detailed descriptions of fortifi ed sites, lavish grave burials and coin hoards together with

literary evidence. All is framed in the wider contexts of Europe and the Mediterranean . . . Due to his striking knowledge of numismatic evidence, sigillography, funerary archaeology and Quellenkritik, Curta is very generous with his reader, but he also demands a lot . . . The signifi cance of this book will be evident. To the attentive reader the work will be an invaluable tool for further researches.’

PHILOSOPHY

Review of Stiegler and Technics edited

by Christina Howells and

Gerald Moore, in

Notre Dame Philosophical Reviews:

‘This book is one of the most important collections published in Continental philosophy this year, bringing together many important thinkers to produce excellent forays

into aesthetics, the nature of the self after deconstruction, political economy and post-Freudian notions of desire . . . Christina Howells and Gerald Moore are two of the best and most careful interpreters of contemporary Continental philosophy . . . Each contributor here makes substantive and important claims about technology, political economy, aesthetics and so on, with and beyond [Stiegler’s] writings, so that this collection operates as a front seat to the most pertinent debates in recent Continental philosophy.’

Review of Deleuze and the Naming of

God by Daniel Barber, in

Notre Dame Philosophical Reviews:

‘Daniel Colucciello Barber’s book is an incisive return to core concepts in Deleuze’s thought in order to interrogate and re-express them differently.’

SCOTTISH STUDIES

Review of Bigotry, Football and Scotland

edited by John Flint and John Kelly,

in Spiked:

‘Essential reading for anyone interested in the politics of anti-sectarianism and the demonisation and criminalisation of Scottish football fans.’

Review of The Blasphemies of Thomas

Aikenhead by Michael F. Graham, in

The Scotsman:

‘Michael F Graham uses the microhistorical method . . . to give us the best account yet of Aikenhead’s life and hanging. It is painstaking research – all those fugitive legal documents and

trawling through ancient library indexes – but it adds up to a rounded and enthralling if necessarily incomplete and speculative picture.’

LAW

Review of Breach of the Peace by

Pamela R. Ferguson, in The Edinburgh

Law Review:

‘This is an impressively thorough account of the case law and practice and a persuasive argument for law reform. The insights contained are enhanced by the author’s prior experience as a procurator fi scal.

This experience shines through in a text that has both practical and scholarly merit. As such, the book will be of great interest to academics, students and legal practitioners.’

Review of The Community of the College

of Justice by John Finlay, in The Legal

History Review:

‘Dr Finlay’s book is the culmination of many years of painstaking research in the primary sources, and it presents a useful survey of the subject . . . This is a book of permanent authority which will be

widely read and one which records the legal history of Scotland; it will be relied on for many generations.’

POLITICS

Review of Scotland’s Choices:

The Referendum and What Happens

Afterwards by Iain McLean,

Jim Gallagher and Guy Lodge, in

The Guardian:

‘One of the essential books on the referendum debate.’

Review of Legally Married by

Scot Peterson and Iain McLean, in

Church Times:

‘As useful to specialists in law as to Christians trying to make sense of the issue . . . Peterson and McLean offer bracing realism rather than wishful thinking as a basis for thinking through contemporary

issues. [It deserves] a wide readership both inside and outside the Churches.’

LITERATURE

Review of Bannockburns by Robert

Crawford, in New Statesman:

‘Excellent.’

Review of Virginia Woolf and the

Materiality of Theory by Derek Ryan, in

Woolf Studies Annual:

‘Derek Ryan revitalises theoretical approaches to reading modernist literature [and] contributes rich and timely readings. Virginia Woolf and the Materiality of Theory

demonstrates an impressive command of contemporary theories of materiality as well as an intimate knowledge of Woolf’s novels and essays, a welcome interruption of critical trends that would dispense with theory.’

PUBLICITY HIGHLIGHTS

• We attended 34 conferences in the UK, Europe, North

America and Asia, meeting a huge range of people with

interests across all our core subject areas. We showcased

our books and promoted the EUP brand, cemented old

relationships and gain new contacts.

• We sent single and multi-book fl yers to around 65

conferences this year, promoting a range of key front-

and backlist titles across our core subjects, and reaching

audiences in some of our niche publishing areas. The

pre-publication fl yer that we produce for every new book

continues to be popular with our authors and provides a

good starting point for the dialogue between author and

the marketing department.

• We also mailed subject librarians with information about

new and established series as well as highlighting our

key reference works. We continue to receive excellent

feedback on our print catalogues from academics and

librarians at a time when many presses are cutting back

on this marketing item.

• We held 17 book launches and events throughout

the year and we have placed advertising in a range

of publications from core journals to the trade and

mainstream press, including the Bookseller Buyer’s Guide, Times Literary Supplement, Scottish Review of Books, Sight

and Sound, Deleuze Studies and History Scotland.

ISLAMIC & MIDDLE EASTERN STUDIES

Review of Twelver Shiism by Andrew J. Newman, in Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society:

‘Newman’s analysis provides a valuable perspective and numerous insights into the long intellectual developments which it covers. Moreover, showing as it does what can be achieved through diligent application of the biographical and bibliographical sources, the work has much to offer as a model for further studies.’

Review of The ‘Alids by Teresa Bernheimer, in American Journal of Islamic Social Sciences:

‘The study is meticulous and well-referenced, with ample support from primary sources in addition to active engagement with contemporary literature . . . valuable to anyone wishing to study the social phenomenon of the ‘Alids or medieval Islamic history in general.’

Review of Arabic in the Fray by Yasir Suleiman, in Journal of Semitic Studies:

‘Like Suleiman’s other books, this one is a model of clarity; its claims are closely argued, amply illustrated and set out in a readable style . . . Those who have read Suleiman’s previous books will no doubt also enjoy this one. But new readers, whether or not they have a particular interest in Arabic, will also fi nd much to interest them in this exploration of the symbolic function of language. Suleiman has succeeded admirably in showing how issues of identity and confl ict are omnipresent in and inextricable from language use, and in making us aware of the power of language as a vehicle for ideology and a symbol for much more than linguistic phenomena.’

JOURNALS PUBLISHING 201314

We published 38 journals in the 2013–14 fi nancial year, with revenues of £720,000.

One journal joined the fold in 2014 (Scottish A airs) and one journal left EUP (Journal of

International Political Theory).

JOURNALS PUBLISHING HIGHLIGHTS

We publish journals in a range of subject areas covering the arts, humanities, social sciences

and science. Our journals are all selective, rigorously edited and peer-reviewed by established

and widely published scholars in their respective fi elds. Many of our journals are prestigious,

long-established journals that we publish on behalf of Learned Societies and associations.

Scottish A airs, founded in 1992, is the leading forum for debate on Scottish current aff airs.

Fully peer-reviewed, it publishes articles on matters of concern to people who are interested

in the development of Scotland, often setting current aff airs in an international or historical

context, and in a context of debates about culture and identity. Scottish A airs takes up

a position between informed journalism and academic analysis, and provides a forum for

dialogue between the two.

OPEN ACCESS

In October 2013, we launched a new publishing model,

Edinburgh Open, which provides an optional Gold Open

Access route to publication in all EUP journals. This initiative

enables authors to make their article freely available

immediately online through payment of a one-off fee.

We also continue to support Open Access Archiving,

namely the deposit of the author’s version of an article in

an electronic repository (often referred to as ‘Green’ Open

Access). Further information is available here:

http://www.euppublishing.com/page/openaccess.

FREQUENCY INCREASES

In 2013, the African Journal of International and Comparative Law and the Journal of Qur’anic Studies increased to three

issues a year. This should lead to greater visibility for these

journals and an increase in citable articles.

ONLINE PUBLICATION

READERSHIP AND SUBSCRIBER PROFILE

There were nearly 139,000 articles accessed via EUP Journals

Online in 2013, compared with 134,000 in 2012 and 82,000

in 2011. Over 86,500 articles were accessed between January

and July 2014 and there were over 66,500 searches run

on the EUP website in 2013. In 2013, 70% of EUP journal

subscriptions included an online component (either online-

only or print and online).

SUPPLEMENTS

We published an electronic supplement to our Comparative Critical Studies journal. The e-CCS issue (Fractured, Travelling, and Transformed Narratives, edited by Lucia

Boldrini and Carole Sweeney) is available to all society

members and subscribers.

LOCAL HOSTING IN CHINA

All EUP journals are now available via CNPeReading, a hosting

platform for e-content based locally in China. The platform

enables us to showcase our journal content to previously

untapped Chinese audiences.

WEB OF SCIENCE

Four EUP journals were accepted for inclusion in the Social

Science Citation Index and awarded an Impact Factor:

Archives of Natural History (0.213), Britain and the World

(0.208), Psychoanalysis and History (0.333) and Scottish Historical Review (0.087).

SPECIAL ISSUES

The journals below published a special issue as both a journal

issue and separate book publication. The issues are included

within a journal subscription and also available for separate

purchase via standard book channels.

KUDOS

In spring 2014, we partnered with Kudos, a new platform designed to help authors use social

media to disseminate their research articles and boost discoverability.

EUP JOURNALS BLOG

In summer 2014, we added to the channels directing readers to EUP journal issues and

articles, by introducing a journals blog.

CONFERENCES

Our journals were represented at over 75 conferences globally, including, for the fi rst time, the

American Library Association and several other library conferences worldwide.

PUBLICITY

We redesigned and produced new template emails, fl yers, posters,

exhibition and display equipment at company, subject and journal

title level to maximise our visibility among our core journal readers,

customers and suppliers.
