It is our great pleasure to jointly introduce this publica-tion, which honours the winners of the 2008 edition of the European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage / Europa Nostra Awards. This year, the sheer variety among the winners clearly illustrates the wide diversity of initiatives related to the safeguarding, the promotion and the fur-ther enrichment of Europe’s cultural heritage. The Euro-pean Commission and Europa Nostra are delighted to see that the quality of the projects in the competition is rising every year and that there is significant involvement of Europe’s civil society organisations in these impressive achievements.

The European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage / Europa Nostra Awards were jointly launched in 2002 by the Euro-pean Commission and Europa Nostra, as part of the im-plementation of the Commission’s Culture Programme. The Awards are an instrument to promote high standards and conservation skills, and to stimulate trans-frontier exchanges in the cultural heritage field. In 2007, the coop-eration between Europa Nostra and the European Com-mission was renewed. The Awards are also a powerful tool for reinforcing the cultural dimension of European inte-gration and for the necessary development of a sense of ‘belonging’ and European citizenship.

The extraordinary diversity of laureates - chronological, geographical and typological - includes the conservation of the archaeological site of Skarkos, a third millennium BC settlement on the Island of Ios in Greece, the conser-vation of the southern wall of the medieval castle of Český Krumlov in the Czech Republic, and the conservation and adaptive re-use of the iconic 20th century Van Nelle Fac-tory in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Also winning a Prize was Stichting Stadsherstel Hoorn, a group of individuals who on a voluntary basis have taken care of the historic centre of Hoorn in The Netherlands. From the entries in the research category, the exhaustive ‘Inventory of the Fortified Military Architecture in Spain’ by the Asociación Española de Amigos de los Castillos was selected as the Prize winner.

The introduction this year of a fourth category to the Awards Scheme, a category for ‘Education, Training and Awareness Raising’ initiatives, has already proven to be very popular. In this first year, twenty outstanding proj-ects were entered to compete for the Prize. All selected winners showed success in making young people aware of the value of cultural heritage: three winners through the joy of learning traditional crafts and skills and work-ing together to safeguard Europe’s historic treasures, and two through photo and television projects. The 2008 Prize winner in this fourth category, ‘The International Built Heritage Conservation Training Centre’ at Bánffy Castle in Bonţida, Romania, brings together students, scholars and craftsmen and women from all over Europe to study and work on the conservation of a castle of European importance. In 2008, the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue, this is an excellent example of promoting mutual understand-

ing among the younger generation through cultural heritage.

The use of traditional skills and crafts, and the need for developing innovative techniques for conservation and adaptation projects, as shown by the winning initiatives, clearly demonstrate that the protection of cultural heri-tage is a creative endeavour. The dynamics between tra-dition and innovation give an inspiring preview of the European Year of Creativity and Innovation in 2009, and showcase the field of cultural heritage as a relevant pillar for this coming year.

We congratulate the laureates of the 2008 European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage / Europa Nostra Awards and we thank them for their exemplary and standard-setting achievements. We are convinced that they will be an in-valuable contribution and inspiration for further initia-tives to safeguard our local, national and European cul-tural heritage.

Cette année, la variété parmi les lauréats illustre sans ambages l’exceptionnelle diversité des initiatives visant à la sauveg-arde et à la promotion du patrimoine culturel de l’Europe tout en continuant à l’enrichir. La Commission européenne et Europa Nostra sont enchantées de constater que la qual-ité des projets candidats à la compétition augmente chaque année et d’observer l’implication significative de la société civile européenne dans ces réalisations impressionnantes.

Le Prix du patrimoine culturel de l’Union européenne / Concours Europa Nostra a été lancé en 2002 par la Commis-sion européenne et Europa Nostra, en vue de participer à la mise en œuvre du Programme Culture de la Commission. Ce Concours de Prix est un instrument destiné à promou-voir des standards élevés et des techniques de la conserva-tion ainsi qu’à stimuler les échanges transfrontaliers dans le domaine du patrimoine culturel. En 2007, la coopération entre Europa Nostra et la Commission européenne a été renouvelée. Les Prix sont aussi un outil puissant pour ren-forcer la dimension culturelle de l’intégration européenne et pour développer un indispensable sens d’appartenance et de citoyenneté européenne.

un prix a été décerné à la Stichting Stadsherstel Hoorn, un groupe de bénévoles qui se sont investis dans la restaura-tion du centre historique de Hoorn aux Pays-Bas. Parmi les candidats de la catégorie consacrée à la recherche, c’est l’exhaustif “inventaire de l’architecture militaire fortifiée en Espagne”, réalisé par l’Asociación Española de Amigos de los Castillos, qui a été sélectionné pour recevoir le Prix.

L’introduction cette année d’une quatrième catégorie au Concours de Prix, une catégorie qui accueille les initiatives en matière “d’Education, de Formation et de Sensibilisation”, a déjà fait preuve de son succès. Au cours de cette première année, vingt projets remarquables se sont portés candidats pour entrer en compétition pour le Prix. Tous les projets récompensés sont parvenus à sensibiliser les jeunes à la valeur du patrimoine culturel : trois lauréats de par le plaisir qui leur a été instillé d’apprendre des techniques et des savoir-faire traditionnels et de travailler ensemble à sauvegarder les trésors historiques d’Europe, et deux autres par le biais de projets de photos et d’émissions de télévision. Le lauréat du Prix en 2008 dans cette quatrième catégorie, le ‘Centre international de formation à la conservation du patrimoine bâti’ installé dans le Château de Bánffy à Bonţida en Roumanie, a rassemblé des étudiants, des érudits et des femmes et des hommes artisans de toute l’Europe pour étudier et travailler à la conservation d’un château d’envergure européenne. En 2008, l’Année européenne du Dialogue In-terculturel, il s’agit d’un excellent exemple de promotion de la compréhension mutuelle auprès des plus jeunes générations grâce au patrimoine culturel.

L’utilisation de techniques et de savoir-faire traditionnels, et le besoin de développer des techniques novatrices pour des projets de conservation et d’adaptation, comme en té-moignent les initiatives lauréates, démontrent clairement que la sauvegarde du patrimoine culturel est une entreprise créative. La dynamique entre la tradition et l’innovation au-gure de façon prometteuse l’Année européenne de la Créa-tivité et de l’Innovation en 2009 et met en valeur le domaine du patrimoine culturel en tant que pilier légitime pour cette année qui s’annonce.

Nous félicitons les lauréats du Prix du patrimoine culturel de l’Union européenne / Concours Europa Nostra et nous les remercions pour leurs réalisations exemplaires et servant d’autant de jalons. The Jury for Category 1 - Conservation met in The Hague in The Netherlands from 29 January to 3 February 2008, to discuss and evaluate sixty-one projects from twenty-two countries. With the invaluable support of an extensive network of independent experts throughout Europe, who assess all projects in situ on a voluntary basis, the Jury was able to select the most outstanding projects from this year’s extraordinary va-riety of entrants. This variety is reflected in the three Prize-winning achievements. The three projects range from Southeast to Northwest Europe and from the third millen-nium BC to the twentieth century AD, and from a small rural settlement, via a castle to an industrial site. All three projects are, however, characterised by the same respectful approach towards the authenticity of the buildings and its surroundings. It has given the Jury great pleasure to be able to award a Prize to the impressive ar-chaeological site of Skarkos on the island of Ios in Greece. Equally impressive is the tra-ditional, yet standard setting conservation of the Southern façade of Horní Hrad (Up-per Castle) of the Český Krumlov State Castle in the Czech Republic. The conservation of the Modern Movement Van Nelle Factory in Rotterdam in The Netherlands and its transformation into a ‘Design Factory’ for the creative industry, shows that the twenti-eth century is an integral part of Europe’s cultural heritage, and presents new challenges for its safeguarding.The range of the twelve projects that were awarded a Medal is similarly extensive. The laureates in Category 1 showcase the field of heritage conservation in all its diversity and the Jury is convinced that the fifteen winners in Category 1 (of which two received a Europa Nostra Medal, see page 34) will prove powerful examples for future best prac-tice in Europe and beyond.

Le jury de la Catégorie 1 - Conservation s’est réuni à La Haye aux Pays-Bas du 29 janvier au 3 février 2008, pour examiner et évaluer soixante et un projets émanant de vingt-deux pays. Avec le soutien inestimable d’un vaste réseau d’experts indépendants dans toute l’Europe, qui ont jugé tous les projets in situ sur une base bénévole, le Jury a été en mesure de sélectionner les projets les plus remarquables parmi l’extraordinaire variété de candi-dats de cette année. Cette variété est reflétée dans les trois réalisations auréolées par un Prix. Ces derniers vont du Sud-Est au Nord-Ouest de l’Europe, du troisième millénaire av. J.-C. au 20ème siècle, et d’une petite colonie rurale à un site industriel en passant par un château. Chacun de ces trois projets est cependant caractérisé par la même approche respectueuse de l’authenticité des bâtiments et de leur environnement.Le Jury a été très heureux de pouvoir décerner un Prix à l’imposant site archéologique de Skarkos sur l’île d’Ios en Grèce. Tout aussi impressionnante est la conservation tradi-tionnelle, et néanmoins remarquable, de la façade sud de Horní Hrad (château du haut) du château d’Etat Český Krumlov en République tchèque. La préservation de l’usine Van Nelle, témoin du Mouvement moderne, à Rotterdam aux Pays-Bas et sa transformation en usine du design pour les industries créatives montre le vingtième siècle comme faisant partie intégrante du patrimoine culturel européen, et présente de nouveaux défis pour sa sauvegarde. L’éventail des douze projets auxquels une Médaille a été décernée est tout aussi vaste. Les lauréats de la Catégorie 1 mettent en valeur le domaine de la conservation du patrimoine dans toute sa diversité et le Jury est convaincu que les quinze lauréats de la Catégorie 1 (parmi lesquels deux ont reçu une Médaille Europa Nostra, voir page 34) se révéleront être de puissants exemples pour promouvoir les meilleures pratiques en Europe et au-delà.

One of the three Prizes in Category 1 - Conservation has been awarded to the conservation of the Southern façade of Horní Hrad (Upper Castle) of the Český Krumlov State Castle in the Czech Republic. This project establishes new standards for Czech monument care and is appreciated as an excellent example of a respectful approach to conserva-tion in Europe. The historic building’s original fabric has been treated as an irreplaceable bearer of authenticity and an object of historic documentation. This approach trans-fers conservation ethics and methodology previously only used in the field of works of art, to the scale of a whole façade and even to that of an urban landscape in which the façade is a highly important element. The project has been realised using all means of preserving historical trac-es and the re-introduction of traditional artisan building skills and materials.

L’un des trois Prix dans la Catégorie 1 - Conservation a été décerné à la sauvegarde de la façade sud de Horní Hrad (château du haut) du château d’État Český Krumlov en République tchèque. Ce projet établit de nouveaux stan-dards pour la préservation des monuments tchèques et est considéré comme un excellent exemple d’une approche respectueuse de la conservation en Europe. La structure d’origine de ce bâtiment historique a été traitée comme un tenant irremplaçable d’authenticité et une source de docu-mentation historique. Cette approche transpose l’éthique et la méthodologie de la conservation, auparavant seulement utilisées dans le domaine des œuvres d’art, à l’échelle d’une façade entière et même jusqu’à celle d’un paysage urbain dans lequel la façade constitue un élément insigne. Le projet a été réalisé en utilisant tous les moyens visant à préserver les traces historiques et en réintroduisant des techniques et des matériaux de construction de l’artisanat traditionnel.

One of the three Prizes in Category 1 - Conservation has been given to the conservation of the archaeological site of Skarkos on the Island of Ios, Greece. After excavation and meticulous study and publication of the finds (movable and immovable), the ruins of this important Early Bronze Age Cycladic settlement from the third millennium BC, have been conserved and restored, using traditional Skar-kos area dry-stone-wall construction methods and local stone. Rural buildings have been renovated and converted into a multi-purpose visitor centre, a storehouse and a guesthouse for researchers. The awarding of this exemplary project has taken par-ticularly into consideration the importance of the site as being one of the cradles of European civilisation. The outstanding quality of the conservation work, and above all the minimal and extremely sensitive character of the interventions have had no impact to a unique landscape, unaltered since prehistoric times.

L’un des trois Prix dans la Catégorie 1 - Conservation a été décerné à la conservation du site archéologique de Skarkos sur l’île de Ios, Grèce. A la suite des fouilles et d’études mé-ticuleuses et de la publication des découvertes (mobilières et immobilières), les ruines de cette importante colonie cy-cladique du début de l’âge de bronze datant du troisième millénaire av. J.-C. ont été préservées et restaurées à l’aide de méthodes traditionnelles dans la région de Skarkos, de con-struction de murs de pierres sèches et de pierres locales. Les bâtiments ruraux ont été rénovés et convertis en un centre polyvalent pour les visiteurs, un entrepôt et un hôtel destiné aux chercheurs.Le jury qui a attribué ce prix à ce projet exemplaire a par-ticulièrement pris en considération l’importance du site en tant que l’un des berceaux de la civilisation européenne. La qualité remarquable du travail de conservation et avant tout le caractère minimal et extrêmement sensible des interven-tions n’ont eu aucun impact sur ce paysage unique, inaltéré depuis l’ère préhistorique.

One of the three Prizes in Category 1 - Conservation has been awarded to the restoration and adaptive re-use of the Van Nelle Factory in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Extensive historical research into the building techniques and the initial colours used in the building, established an essential knowledge of the original qualities of this early and most important example of Modern Movement ar-chitecture in Europe from the late 1920s. This knowledge was the basis for the restoration and adaptive re-use of the complex. The unique heritage values of the buildings have been outstandingly conserved, including the at the time innovative building technologies, such as curtain walls. Necessary transformations and new additions to convert the buildings into the ‘Van Nelle Design Factory’, provid-ing office space for the creative and design industries, are sensitive and highly reversible and seem to fit naturally.The project is highly appreciated as an exemplary ap-proach to the restoration of, and finding new uses for, an iconic building of European and world importance.

L’un des trois Prix dans la Catégorie 1 - Conservation a été attribué à la restauration et à la reconversion appropriée de l’usine Van Nelle à Rotterdam, Pays-Bas. Des recherches historiques approfondies dans les techniques de construc-tion et dans les couleurs utilisées initialement dans le bâti-ment ont fourni des connaissances essentielles quant aux qualités originales de cet exemple précoce et capital du courant architectural du Mouvement moderne en Europe de la fin des années vingt. Ces connaissances ont constitué le fondement de la restauration et de la reconversion ad hoc de ce complexe. Les valeurs uniques touchant au pat-rimoine du bâtiment ont été remarquablement préservées, y compris les technologies innovantes d’époque, à l’instar des murs rideaux. Les transformations indispensables et les nouvelles adjonctions visant à transformer les bâti-ments en ‘Usine du Design Van Nelle’, mettant des espaces de bureaux à la disposition des industries de la création et du design, non seulement ont été réalisées avec délicatesse et sont pleinement réversibles, mais semblent s’insérer na-turellement dans le décor. Le projet est hautement apprécié comme une approche exemplaire de la restauration et d’une reconversion réussie d’un édifice emblématique d’envergure européenne et internationale.

A Medal in Category 1 - Conservation has been awarded to the conservation and redevelopment of the Tour & Taxis Site in Brussels, Belgium, a large complex of build-ings that was used from 1907 to 1987 for customs clear-ing and storage of commercial goods. The main building, the Entrepôt Royal, and the adjoining warehouses have been exceptionally restored. Traces of train tracks and platforms, the concrete structure, and the interior street with its glass roof and balcony railings have all been safe-guarded to show the original functioning of the buildings. New functions, such as office space for over 1000 workers, a commercial gallery and extensive multi purpose areas, have been inserted.The high quality of the conservation work, substantial and modest at the same time, honours the complex’s indus-trial past, retaining the characteristic façades combining yellow brickwork with natural stone and shed roofs. It is highly appreciated that the Tour & Taxis Site was under-stood to be of great importance not just for its economic potential, but for its cultural and historic values as well.

Les traces des rails et des quais ferroviaires, la structure en béton ainsi que la rue in-térieure avec son toit en verre et les balustrades du balcon ont tous été préservés pour montrer le fonctionnement des bâtiments à l’époque. De nouvelles fonctions, telles que des espaces de bureaux pouvant accueillir plus de 1.000 per-sonnes, une galerie commerciale et d’immenses espaces polyvalents ont été ajoutés.La haute qualité du travail de conservation, à la fois consi-dérable et modeste, rend hommage au passé industriel du complexe, maintenant les façades caractéristiques qui con-juguent des briques jaunes à des pierres naturelles et des toits de hangar. Il est appréciable que le site de Tour & Taxis a été jugé d’une grande importance non seulement pour son potentiel économique, mais également pour ses valeurs cul-turelles et historiques.

A Medal in Category 1 - Conservation has been given to the restoration of the Tapiola Swimming Pool in Espoo in Finland. Originally designed by Aarne Ervi and com-pleted in 1965, the swimming pool was skilfully restored, conserving the architecture of the 1960s while totally re-newing all the technical facilities. A respectful extension was added to house extra pools and gymnastics facilities, respectful to the original architecture and to the sur-rounding park area.The project is admired as exemplary in its approach to the challenging conservation and restoration of the architec-ture of the 1960s, thus emphasising the modern values of the Tapiola area.

A Medal in Category 1 - Conservation has been given to the restoration of the Grande Forge in Buffon, France. This ensemble of buildings, a metallurgical factory with accommodation and facilities for its masters and workers, including a foundry, a refinery and a mill, as well as a cha-pel and an orangery, is a unique example of an 18th cen-tury industrial complex. In 1923, industrial production stopped and the complex became a private residence. In 1978, new owners opened the site for public viewing and started the restoration of the various industrial and resi-dential parts of the complex, including reinstalling parts of the then missing machinery.The project is valued for the great effort and dedication put into the restoration of this important example of an early industrial site.

A Medal in Category 1 - Conservation has been given to the restoration of the church of Saint Julien l’Hospitalier-Saint Blaise in Longsols, France. The restoration of this remarkable example of 15th century wooden church ar-chitecture in the Champagne region not only safeguarded an important building, but also contributed to the region’s identity and image. By removing a lowered ceiling and ex-posing the detailing of the wooden supporting structure, the atmosphere of the church’s interior was spectacularly revived. Great effort was put in retaining the patina of the exposed wood and great care was given to the restoration of the church’s collection of art works. The church again serves its religious purpose alongside being used for con-certs and exhibitions.The project is highly appreciated for the outstanding res-toration of both the exterior and interior of this great example of vernacular architecture and for respectfully retaining and restoring the building’s authentic character.

A Medal in Category 1 - Conservation has been given to the restoration, reconstruction and adaptation of the Max Liebermann Villa and Garden in Berlin-Wannsee, Germany. Thorough study of numerous surviving docu-ments provided the basis for an authentic and meticu-lously detailed restoration of the estate of the painter Max Liebermann, which from 1935 onwards was no longer maintained in line with its intended philosophy and suf-fered from general neglect. Views of the house and garden that Liebermann painted enabled the restorers to recreate the bright atmosphere of the site. The residence was con-verted into a museum of the painter’s work, which opened in 2006.The restoration of the villa and garden is particularly ad-mired as a Gesamtkunstwerk, encompassing architecture, interior design and landscaping. It deserves special ac-knowledgement because it is the result of a private initia-tive, realised to a large extent through voluntary engage-ment.

A Medal in Category 1 - Conservation has been given to the conservation and restoration of the Archaeological Site of Galerius’ Palace in Thessaloniki, Greece. The remains of the 4th century AD palatial complex of the Roman Emperor Galerius are today part of the mod-ern city of Thessaloniki. The site had been excavated in the 1950-70s but was seriously neglected in the follow-ing years. The project comprised of the conservation of the masonry, the ancient mosaic and marble floors, and the marble wall revetments and wall paintings, as well as the interpretation and presentation of the archaeological remains.The awarding of the project has taken particularly into consideration the excellent quality of the conservation and restoration work, of the design and materials of the modern infrastructure added to the site, and of the pre-ceding archaeological and architectural studies. Above all, it is highly appreciated that the intervention transformed an abandoned public ground into an attractive, educative and well organised archaeological site in the heart of a modern city.

Une Médaille dans la Catégorie 1 - Conservation a été donnée à la préservation et à la restauration du site archéologique du Palais de Galère à Thessalonique, Grèce. Les vestiges des bâtiments du palais de l’empereur romain Galère datant du 4ème siècle de notre ère font aujourd’hui partie de la ville moderne de Thessalonique. Le site a fait l’objet de fouilles dans les 50-70 mais a été sérieusement laissé à l’abandon au cours des années qui ont suivi. Le projet consistait en la conservation de la maçonnerie, des mosaïques anciennes et des sols en marbre, et des revête-ments muraux en marbre et des peintures murales, ainsi qu’en l’interprétation et la présentation des vestiges ar-chéologiques. Dans l’attribution de cette médaille au projet, l’excellente qualité des travaux de conservation et de restauration, de la conception et des matériaux de l’infrastructure moderne ra-joutés au site, ainsi que celle des recherches archéologiques et architecturales effectuées en amont a particulièrement été prise en considération. Par-dessus tout, il a été fait grand cas de l’intervention qui a permis de transformer un terrain public laissé en friche en un site archéologique attrayant, pédagogique et bien organisé au cœur d’une ville moderne.

A Medal in Category 1 - Conservation has been given to the conservation of the Medieval Bridge over the Río Truchas at Pobleta de San Miguel in Spain. The meticulous docu-mentation and research on this small 14th–16th century bridge was followed by respectful conservation work that preserved all traces of the bridge’s use over the centuries. The restoration of the paving of the bridge, necessary due to the threat of vegetation affecting its underlying struc-ture, in particular showcases the approach of minimum intervention and maximum conservation. This approach was also applied to the surroundings of the bridge, such as to the protection of the neighbouring river banks. The project is admired for the high quality of the research preceding the conservation of the bridge as well as for the excellent conservation work itself. Also the cooperation between two villages, two provinces and two regions is highly valued.

La docu-mentation méticuleuse et les travaux de recherche sur ce petit pont du 14ème-16ème siècle ont été suivis d’un ou-vrage de conservation respectueux qui a préservé toutes les traces de l’utilisation du pont au travers des siècles. La restauration du pavage du pont, rendue nécessaire par une végétation menaçant d’affecter sa structure de base, illustre notamment le parti-pris d’une intervention minimale pour une préservation optimale. Cette approche a été également suivie en ce qui concerne les environs du pont, à l’instar de la protection des rivages voisins du fleuve. Le projet est admiré pour la grande qualité des recherches effectuées en amont des travaux de conservation du pont ainsi que pour l’excellent ouvrage de préservation en tant que tel. Par ailleurs, la coopération entre deux villages, deux provinces et deux régions est digne d’éloges.

A Medal in Category 1 - Conservation has been given to the restoration of the choir of the Church of San Nicolás de Bari in Madrigal de las Altas Torres, Spain. The resto-ration was preceded by the identification and documen-tation of the various elements of the choir of the church. The principal choir stalls and their Mudejar ceilings, the Baroque choir stalls, parts of the Late Medieval altarpiece and components of a Renaissance coffered ceiling were meticulously researched and the carved, polychromed and gilded woodwork was restored. The fragments were again brought together in a coherent ensemble.The project is appreciated for the accuracy of the scientific research and the sensitive restoration of the different con-structive and decorative elements of the choir.

A Medal in Category 1 - Conservation has been given to the restoration of the building and collections of the Museo Cerralbo in Madrid, Spain. The Marquis de Cer-ralbo, a scholar, traveller, politician, collector and Maece-nas, built his mansion to house his extensive collection of works of art. An exemplary member of late 19th and early 20th century high society, he bequeathed his house and art collection to the Spanish state for the education and enjoyment of the whole of society. The project included the restoration of the interior decorations of the mansion and of the entire art collection, which was reinstalled in its original setting, returning the house to its intended char-acter, now in the form of a House Museum. The project is especially valued for allowing the public to appreciate the spirit of collecting in the Belle Epoque period when the house was built, and to appreciate its founder.

The Grange is the house which the influential architect Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin (1812-52) built for himself and his family. After the death of Pugin’s sons, who further developed the design of the house, The Grange suffered and deteriorated.In 1997, The Landmark Trust acquired the buildings and, after thorough research, restored it with its furnishings, to a state appropriate to the 1840s when the Pugin fam-ily were in residence, noting the unique significance in architectural history of The Grange’s designer and first resident. The Grange, in accordance with The Landmark Trust policy, is available for holiday rental and has public open days throughout the year.The project is admired for the painstaking detail of the restoration, in particular of the interior, and for the build-ing’s enlightened new role.

Les quatorze études et inventaires émanant des dix pays candidats dans la Catégorie 2 - Recherche ont été jugés les 14 et 15 septembre 2007 à Belgrade, Serbie, en amont des événe-ments commémorant les Journées Européennes du Patrimoine 2008. Les candidatures de cette année étaient toutes d’une qualité excellente et exemplaire. Le lauréat du Prix, “l’inventaire de l’architecture militaire fortifiée en Espagne” réalisé par l’Asociación Española de Amigos de los Castillos est une étude exhaustive localisant et documentant l’architecture militaire de l’Espagne que le Jury a estimé constituer un ex-emple d’envergure européenne. De la même façon, la Médaille attribuée au “Plan de con-servation du Parc Somlóvar” établi par Gábor Alföldy, de Hongrie, récompense une étude qui est la première de sa sorte en Hongrie et fait force d’un exemple remarquable pour des sites similaires en Hongrie et dans les régions environnantes. Le Jury a été heureux de constater une augmentation des études et des inventaires qui poursuivent un objectif très pratique et qui pourraient avoir pour effet de se poser en ex-emple dans la Catégorie 1 - Conservation.

The fourteen studies and inventories from ten countries entered into Category 2 - Research were judged on 14 and 15 September 2007 in Belgrade, Serbia, preceding the events marking the 2008 European Heritage Days. The entries were all of an excellent and exemplary quality. The Prize-winning ‘Inventory of the Fortified Military Architecture in Spain’ by the Asociación Española de Amigos de los Castillos is an exhaustive study locating and docu-menting Spain’s military architecture and is considered by the Jury an example of Euro-pean importance. Likewise, the Medal given to the ‘Somlóvár Park Conservation Plan’ by Gábor Alföldy from Hungary, awards a study that is the first of its kind in Hungary and is an outstanding example for similar sites in Hungary and the wider region.The Jury happily noted an increase in studies and inventories that serve a very practical purpose and that may result in best practice in Category 1 - Conservation.

Research Recherche

The Prize in Category 2 - Research has been awarded to the ‘Inventory of the Fortified Military Architecture in Spain’, created by the Asociación Española de Amigos de los Castillos. This inventory locates and describes all of Spain’s fortified military architecture in a scientific and systematic way and makes the information available to the authorities and for educational purposes.The project is appreciated as an excellent example of rais-ing awareness of Spain’s military heritage that is not only important to Spain, but is highly significant on a Euro-pean level as well.

Le Prix de la Catégorie 2 - Recherche a été décerné à “l’inventaire de l’architecture militaire fortifiée en Espagne” réalisé par l’Asociación Española de Amigos de los Castillos. Cet inventaire situe et décrit toute l’architecture militaire fortifiée en Espagne d’une façon scientifique et systéma-tique et rend les informations accessibles aux autorités et à des objectifs pédagogiques. A Medal in Category 2 - Research has been given to the ‘Somlóvár Park Conservation Plan’ by Gábor Alföldy, landscape architect and garden historian from Hungary. The Conservation Plan included research into the history and the present state of Somlóvár Park, which in the 19th century was considered one of the most important land-scape gardens in Hungary. Various historical sources have been uncovered and analysed and were used to conceive a detailed chronology of the park, which was followed by an assessment of all its landscape elements. The research resulted in a detailed master plan with proposals for the conservation and future maintenance of the park.The ‘Somlóvár Park Conservation Plan’ is valued as the first in depth study of this important garden. The plan in-troduced and adapted the methodology of a conservation plan in a country where this type of research had never been used previously for gardens. It is an outstanding ex-ample for other sites in Hungary and the wider region.

A Medal in Category 2 - Research has been given to ‘Do Palácio de Belèm’, created by the Museum of the Presi-dency of the Portuguese Republic, Portugal. The publica-tion and exhibition ‘Do Palácio de Belèm’ were the result of a meticulous research into the Belèm Palace and its in-terior and collection. A full inventory was organised, in which renowned experts from various fields took part. Apart from the inventory, the research included compara-tive research into other national palaces and the recupera-tion of parts of the collection that had been dispersed into other public and private collections.The project is admired for making accessible to citizens the Palácio de Belèm, a building that reflects an impor-tant part of Portugal’s national identity and of its relevant history. The rigorous inventory and the publications pre-senting the results are of outstanding quality and should be considered an example for similar research projects in Portugal and in Europe.

Le 20 février 2008, le Jury de la Catégorie 3 - Contribution exemplaire par des individus et des organisations s’est réuni à La Haye pour juger les quatorze dossiers de candidature émanant de onze pays. Le fait de constater la grande variété de réalisations remarquables par des individus et des groupes de personnes qui consacrent leur vie à la sauvegarde et à la mise en valeur du patrimoine culturel a été une source de grande inspiration pour le Jury. Les efforts bénévoles et professionnels montrent clairement l’importance d’individus et de membres d’organisations passionnés dans le domaine du patrimoine culturel, mais sont également une indication de la joie intense que ces personnes trouvent dans leur travail.Le Prix dans la Catégorie 3 a été décerné à la Stichting Stadsherstel Hoorn des Pays-Bas, qui est un exemple hautement réussi de l’implication de la société civile dans la sauvegarde des centres historiques des villes d’Europe et de l’importance du bénévolat. Parmi les trois Médailles qui ont été décernées, le Jury a pris un plaisir particulier à attribuer pour la pre-mière fois une Médaille Europa Nostra à une réalisation remarquable en Moldavie (voir page 37).

On 20 February 2008, the Jury for Category 3 - Dedicated Service by Individuals and Or-ganisations met in The Hague to judge the fourteen submitted entries from eleven coun-tries. To see the wide variety of remarkable achievements by individuals and groups of people who dedicate their lives to safeguarding and promoting cultural heritage was greatly inspiring to the Jury. The volunteer and professional efforts clearly show the im-portance of passionate individuals and organisations in the cultural heritage field, but they also show the enormous joy that all these people find in their work.The Prize in Category 3 was awarded to Stichting Stadsherstel Hoorn from The Neth-erlands, which is a highly successful example of civil society’s involvement in the safeguarding of Europe’s historic city centres and of the importance of volunteers. Of the three Medals also awarded, the Jury in particular took pleasure in granting a Europa Nostra Medal to an outstanding achievement in Moldova for the first time (see page 37).

Dedicated Service Contribution exemplaire

The Prize in Category 3 - Dedicated Service has been awarded to Stichting Stadsherstel Hoorn in The Nether-lands. This private foundation was set up in 1973 to op-pose the proposed pulling down and redevelopment of parts of the historic centre of the city of Hoorn, one of the founding cities of the Dutch East Indies Company. Run by volunteers, it has acquired buildings and ensembles for 35 years, conserving and finding new uses for them. Projects have ranged from social housing complexes to townhous-es, and from warehouses to a chapel. Also, the approach varied from pure conservation to insertion of sensitively designed new buildings when it appeared impossible to save the historic entities. Spread around Hoorn, the proj-ects contributed not only to the fate of the respective buildings, but were of great importance to the conserva-tion of the inner city urban fabric.The work of Stichting Stadsherstel Hoorn is a highly ap-preciated example of civil society’s involvement in the safeguarding of Europe’s historic city centres and of the importance of volunteers.

Le Prix de la Catégorie 3 - Contribution exemplaire a été décerné à la Stichting Stadsherstel Hoorn aux Pays-Bas. Cette fondation privée a été créée en 1973 pour faire opposition au projet de démolition et de réaménagement de certaines parties du centre historique de la ville de Hoorn, l’une des villes fondatrices de la Compagnie néerlandaise des Indes orientales. Gérée par des bénévoles, elle a acquis des bâti-ments et des ensembles depuis 35 ans, assurant leur sauveg-arde et leur trouvant de nouveaux usages. Cette entreprise a concerné des complexes de logements sociaux comme des maisons de maîtres, des entrepôts comme une église. Par ailleurs, l’approche ne s’est pas limitée à la seule conserva-tion, il a été procédé à l’insertion de nouveaux bâtiments de conception subtile lorsqu’il s’avérait impossible de sauver des entités historiques. Étalés autour de Hoorn, les projets n’ont pas seulement contribué à rétablir le sort des édifices respectifs, ils ont également été d’une grande importance pour sauvegarder le tissu urbain du cœur de la ville. L’œuvre de la Stichting Stadsherstel Hoorn est un exemple tenu en haute estime de l’implication de la société civile dans la préservation des centres historiques des villes euro-péennes et de l’importance des bénévoles.

A Medal in Category 3 - Dedicated Service has been given to Emil Reinier van Brederode from The Nether-lands. Emil van Brederode has held numerous positions in the field of conservation of historic buildings since the early 1970s. Over the years he added the safeguarding of landscape and urban planning to his field of expertise and lifted it to a European and international level. He worked for the Dutch umbrella organisation, Nationaal Contact Monumenten (National Contact Point for Monuments), and initiated various other platforms and umbrella organ-isations focussing on issues such as Industrial Heritage and Historic Churches. In 1987 he set up the Open Monu-ments Day in The Netherlands and in 1991 he played a key role in bringing this initiative to a European level by orga-nising and coordinating the European Heritage Days, now functioning as a joint action of the Council of Europe and the European Commission in 49 countries across Europe.The career of Emil van Brederode is admired for the nu-merous initiatives for the safeguarding of cultural heritage in The Netherlands and in Europe. His creativity in setting up programmes to raise awareness of the importance and the values of cultural heritage, particularly through the European Heritage Days, is exceptional.

Sherban Cantacuzino has dedicated his life to architecture and heritage conservation in Europe and around the world. He has taught, published and helped shape national and European policies and programmes in the field of cul-tural en natural heritage protection. He held functions in a large number of committees in the United Kingdom and in several international organisations. After 1989, he focussed on Central and Eastern European countries and offered his experience to organise measures to safeguard the heritage in these countries. He initiated numerous projects, particularly in Croatia and Romania, where he is the Founder-President of Pro Patrimonio, the National Trust of Romania.The career of Sherban Cantacuzino is lauded for its out-standing contribution to the welfare of Europe’s cultural heritage. His sustained energy and dedication for the cause of historic buildings and environmental conserva-tion in Romania is particularly admired.

Cette année, une quatrième catégorie a été ajoutée au Prix du patrimoine culturel de l’Union européenne / Concours Europa Nostra. Au cours des années précédentes, les Ju-rys des trois catégories recevaient régulièrement des candidatures qui étaient concentrées sur la sensibilisation au patrimoine culturel de l’Europe, et qui ne correspondaient à au-cune des catégories. L’introduction de la catégorie 4 - Education, Formation et Sensibilisa-tion permet au Jury de récompenser des projets qui sont d’une importance cruciale pour la sauvegarde et la promotion du patrimoine culturel. Le nombre de dossiers de candidature la première année, vingt projets émanant de onze pays, prouve déjà la valeur de cette nou-velle catégorie et, à l’issue de sa réunion le 31 janvier 2008 à La Haye, le Jury a décerné avec plaisir un Prix et quatre Médailles.Le Prix a été attribué à la source d’inspiration que représente le “Centre international de formation à la conservation du patrimoine bâti” au Château de Bánffy à Bonţida en Rou-manie, où des étudiants sont initiés aux métiers et techniques traditionnels et utilisent immédiatement leurs connaissances nouvellement acquises pour sauvegarder et restaurer une importante demeure baroque. Le lieu du centre de formation, la Transylvanie, et sa population internationale d’étudiants soulignent l’importance et la valeur du dialogue in-terculturel dans le domaine du patrimoine culturel. Les projets récompensés ont pour objectif d’enthousiasmer les plus jeunes générations et de leur apporter les connaissances et les compétences susceptibles de protéger le patri-moine culturel et de promouvoir ses nombreux avantages. Le Jury estime que la Catégorie 4 est un ajout précieux aux catégories existantes et demeure convaincu que les projets de cette catégorie, engageant les jeunes, pavent la voie du patrimoine culturel de demain et du Prix du patrimoine culturel de l’Union européenne / Concours Europa Nostra.

This year, a fourth category was added to the European Union Prize for Cultural Heri-tage / Europa Nostra Awards. In the past years, the Juries in all three categories regularly received entries that focused on awareness raising about the conservation of Europe’s cultural heritage, and could not be fit into one of the categories. The introduction of Category 4 - Education, Training and Awareness Raising enables the Jury to award proj-ects that are of utmost importance to the safeguarding and promotion of cultural heri-tage. The number of entries in this first year, twenty projects from eleven countries, al-ready proves the value of this new category and, at the end of its meeting on 31 January 2008 in The Hague, the Jury with pleasure awarded one Prize and four Medals.The Prize was awarded to the inspiring International Built Heritage Conservation Training Centre at Bánffy Castle in Bonţida, Romania, where students are introduced to traditional crafts and skills and immediately use their newly acquired knowledge to conserve and restore an important Baroque mansion. The location of the training cen-tre in Transylvania and its international student population, show the importance and value of intercultural dialogue in the field of cultural heritage. The awarded projects aim to enthuse the younger generations and to bring to them the knowledge and skills to protect cultural heritage and to promote its multiple values. The Jury thinks Category 4 to be a valuable addition to the existing categories and is convinced that the projects in this category, by engaging the youth, will ensure a future for cultural heritage and for the European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage / Europa Nostra Awards.

Education

The Prize in Category 4 – Education, Training and Aware-ness Raising has been awarded to the International Built Heritage Conservation Training Centre in Bonţida in Ro-mania. This centre offers theoretical and practical on-site training in the skills of stonemasonry, masonry consolida-tion and carpentry at the centre’s location, the threatened baroque Bánffy Castle. Lectures are followed by hands-on learning in practical workshops, in which the students are involved in real restoration projects. So far more than 800 trainees (craftsmen and university students) from 13 European countries and overseas have been trained and important parts of the unique Bánffy Castle have been re-stored through this programme. The project is highly appreciated for its twin approach: training for conservation and conservation through train-ing. The Built Heritage Conservation Training Centre is an excellent example of cross border exchange of knowl-edge and a very worthy winner in the 2008 European Year of Intercultural Dialogue.

Le Prix dans la catégorie 4 - Education, Formation et Sensibil-isation a été décerné au “Centre international de formation à la conservation du patrimoine bâti” de Bonţida en Rou-manie. Cet établissement offre des formations théoriques et pratiques aux techniques de la taille de pierres, à la con-solidation de maçonnerie et de charpenterie sur le terrain, à savoir au centre même, le château baroque de Bánffy qui est menacé. Des conférences sont suivies d’un apprentissage expérimental dans des ateliers pratiques dans lesquels les étudiants sont impliqués dans de réels projets de restaura-tion. Jusqu’ici plus de 800 personnes (artisans et étudiants à l’université) de 13 pays européens et d’outre-mer ont reçu une formation et des parties conséquentes de l’exceptionnel château de Bánffy ont été restaurées. Le projet est hautement apprécié pour sa double approche: formation à la conservation / conservation grâce à la for-mation. Le Centre de formation à la conservation du pat-rimoine bâti est un excellent exemple d’échange transfront-alier de connaissances et un digne lauréat dans le cadre de 2008 Année Européenne du Dialogue Interculturel.

Cette initiative de l’Institut du Patrimoine wallon vise à sensibiliser les jeunes de 12 à 15 ans au patrimoine architectural et aux professions afférentes en organisant des cours de quatre jours dans une abbaye cistercienne fondée en 1244 qui est en cours de restauration. Au cours des dix dernières années, plus de 5.000 élèves et plus de 350 profes-seurs ont collaboré à ces cours. En raison de son succès, le projet inclut aussi désormais des séminaires d’été de trois à cinq jours pour les enfants et leurs parents.Le projet est hautement apprécié pour l’impact qu’il a sur ses participants, tant sur le plan culturel que social. Vivre et travailler pendant un certain nombre de jours sur un site prestigieux, en compagnie d’experts et de professionnels de la conservation et de la restauration, insuffle une passion pour le patrimoine culturel et ses valeurs, et entrouvre une porte vers une vie professionnelle dans ce secteur.

A Medal in Category 4 - Education, Training and Aware-ness Raising has been given to the Classes d’éveil au Patri-moine et à ses metiers at the La Paix-Dieu centre in Amay, Belgium. This initiative of the Walloon Institute for Cul-tural Heritage aims to raise awareness among youths aged 12 to 15, of the architectural heritage and related profes-sions, by organising four day courses at a Cistercian ab-bey founded in 1244 that is undergoing restoration. In the past 10 years, over 5000 students and more than 350 teachers have been involved in these courses. Because of its success, the project now also includes 3 to 5 day sum-mer camps for children and their parents.The project is highly appreciated for the impact it has on its participants, both cultural and social. Living and working for a number of days on a prestigious site, ac-companied by conservation and restoration experts and professionals, instills a passion for cultural heritage and its values, and opens a door to a future professional life in the field.

L’idée à la base de ce projet est d’initier des jeunes au patrimoine culturel de l’Europe par le biais de travaux pratiques de conserva-tion, les sensibilisant de cette façon à l’importance de la sauvegarde de ce patrimoine. Les bénévoles travaillent sur d’authentiques chantiers de restauration, où ils suivent une année de formation pratique et théorique, laquelle recouvre toutes les disciplines liées à la conservation des monuments. Non contents d’acquérir les compétences et l’expertise req-uises dans le métier de la conservation historique, les jeunes sont les témoins de première main de la réussite tangible de leur travail, renforçant ainsi leur identification à la tâche. De surcroît, cette expérience de travail en groupe encourage le sens de la communauté des jeunes.Le projet est admiré pour sa qualité pédagogique. Les Ju-gendbauhütten sont devenus le modèle d’autres pays euro-péens.

A Medal in Category 4 - Education, Training and Awareness Raising has been awarded to the Jugendbauhütten of the Deutsche Stiftung Denkmalschutz e.V., the German Foundation for Monument Protection. The basic idea of this project is to introduce young people to Europe’s cultural heritage through practical conserva-tion work, thus making them aware of the importance of preserving this inheritance. The volunteers work on actual restoration sites, where they undergo a year of practical and theoretical training, encompassing all disciplines re-lated to monument conservation. In addition to acquiring the requisite skills and expertise in the métier of historic conservation, the youngsters witness firsthand the tan-gible success of their work, thus strengthening their iden-tification with the task. Furthermore, their experience of working as part of a group fosters the youths’ sense of community. The project is admired for its educational quality. The Jugendbauhütten have become the model for other Euro-pean countries.

En onze épisodes, des jeunes habitants d’Amsterdam de divers milieux et origines sont montrés en train de découvrir le patrimoine culturel de leur ville, y compris les maisons sur les canaux du 17ème siècle et l’architecture des années cinquante et soixante dans les nouvelles banlieues à l’ouest d’Amsterdam. La série a été diffusée par la chaîne de télévision d’Amsterdam AT5 et par la chaîne régionale RTV Noord Holland, et un DVD contenant tous les épisodes a été distribué dans les biblio-thèques des écoles et aux enseignants d’Amsterdam dans le but d’introduire le patrimoine culturel de la ville dans leurs programmes et de leur inculquer le sens de l’appréciation et de la responsabilité pour son entretien.Le projet est hautement apprécié pour avoir été en mesure de s’adapter à la mentalité des groupes-cibles afin de les initier au patrimoine culturel. Le style de la série est rapide et direct, et les bâtiments et sites utilisés dans les différents épisodes sont étroitement liés à la vie quotidienne des groupes-cibles. Le projet montre à l’envi comment faire du patrimoine culturel un sujet intéressant pour les jeunes.

A Medal in Category 4 - Education, Training and Aware-ness Raising has been given to Schatten van Amsterdam, a Dutch television series. In 11 episodes, young citizens of Amsterdam from different backgrounds are shown dis-covering the cultural heritage in their city, including 17th century canal houses, but also architecture from the 1950s and 1960s in the new towns to the West of Amsterdam. The series was broadcasted via the Amsterdam television station AT5 and the regional station RTV Noord Holland, and a DVD containing all episodes was distributed to school libraries and teachers in Amsterdam to introduce the city’s cultural heritage into their curriculums.The project is highly appreciated for being able to adapt to the mindset of the target-groups to introduce cultural heritage to them and hereby foster a sense of appreciation and responsibility for its upkeep. The style of the series is fast and to-the-point, and the buildings and sites used in the different episodes have close connections with the target-groups’ day to day lives. The project is an excellent example of how to make cultural heritage a young and at-tractive subject.

Une Médaille dans la catégorie 4 - Education, Formation et Sensibilisation a été donnée à l’Expérience Photographique Internationale des Monuments (EPIM), dont la coordina-tion a été assurée par le Museu d’Història de Catalunya de Barcelone, Espagne. Lancée en 1992, elle a pour objectif d’encourager les jeunes à expérimenter leur patrimoine culturel et leur histoire en les documentant par des pho-tographies. L’expérience est une initiative internationale, réunissant des photographes issus de plus de 40 pays pour montrer un fil d’Ariane au travers du patrimoine culturel européen. Chaque année, une exposition des meilleures candidatures des pays participants, accompagnée d’un cata-logue, est mise sur pied.Le projet est apprécié pour sa capacité à promouvoir le patrimoine culturel, tout particulièrement auprès des jeunes ainsi que pour la dimension internationale de cette expéri-ence par le biais de son intégration dans la dynamique des Journées Européennes du Patrimoine.

A Medal in Category 4 - Education, Training and Awareness Raising has been given to the International Heritage Photographic Experience (IHPE), the coordi-nation of which is carried out by the Museu d’Història de Catalunya in Barcelona, Spain. Started in 1992, it aims to encourage young people to experience their cultural heritage and their history by documenting it through photographs. The experience is an international initiative, bringing together photographers from over 40 countries to show a common thread running through Europe’s cul-tural heritage. Every year, an exhibition with catalogue is compiled from the best entries from the participating countries.The project is valued for it being able to promote cultural heritage, especially among young people, and for the in-ternational dimension of this experience via its integra-tion in the dynamics of the European Heritage Days.

Europa Nostra Medal

Depuis que le Prix du patrimoine culturel de l’Union européenne / Concours Europa Nostra est mis en œuvre dans le cadre du Programme Culture de la Commission eu-ropéenne, seules les candidatures émanant de pays participant au Programme Culture sont éligibles pour le Prix. En tant qu’organisation paneuropéenne, Europa Nostra entend rendre hommage à des réalisations exemplaires dans l’ensemble de l’Europe et décerne en conséquence des Médailles Europa Nostra à des projets émanant de pays qui ne peuvent se porter candidats au Prix. Cette année des projets et des réalisations dans la Fédération russe, en Suisse et en Molda-vie ont été récompensés. Dans la catégorie 1 - Conservation, les Médailles Europa Nostra ont été données à la restauration et à la reconversion de la cathédrale de Kaliningrad et au site archéologique de la cathédrale Saint-Pierre à Genève. Une Médaille Europa Nostra dans la Catégorie 3 - Contribution exemplaire par des individus et des organisations a été décernée à Valéria Suruceanu du Musée national pour les arts de Chişinău.

Since the European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage / Europa Nostra Awards is an implementation of the Culture Programme of the European Commission, only entries from countries that take part in the Culture Programme are eligible for the Prize. As a pan-European organisation, Europa Nostra wishes to celebrate extraordinary achieve-ments in the whole of Europe and therefore awards Europa Nostra Medals to projects in countries that cannot compete for the top Prize.This year, projects and achievements in the Russian Federation, Switzerland and Mol-dova were awarded. In Category 1 - Conservation, Europa Nostra Medals were given to the restoration, reconstruction and re-use of Kaliningrad Cathedral and to the archaeo-logical site of Saint Pierre Cathedral in Geneva. A Europa Nostra Medal in Category 3 - Dedicated Service by Individuals and Organisations was given to Valéria Suruceanu at the National Museum of Art in Chişinău.

Une Médaille Europa Nostra dans la Catégorie 1 - Conser-vation a été donnée au site archéologique de la cathédrale Saint-Pierre à Genève, Suisse. Des travaux de recherche et de fouilles de grande envergure sous la cathédrale et les rues environnantes ont été entrepris sur une période impressi-onnante de 30 ans (1976-2006). Les travaux ont mis à jour des vestiges du développement urbain dans le centre histo-rique de Genève datant de plus de 2.000 ans. Le site a été ouvert au public en 2006. Il a fait l’objet d’aménagements subtils pour recevoir des visiteurs et une présentation ex-emplaire a été mise au point, laquelle, par le biais d’un large éventail de supports, met en valeur un site archéologique urbain qui revêt une grande importance tant au plan euro-péen qu’international.Le projet est tenu en haute estime de par la qualité des fouilles sur un site particulièrement difficile ainsi que pour l’approche intégrée et l’excellente collaboration entre les ar-chéologues, les conservateurs et les architectes.

A Europa Nostra Medal in Category 1 - Conservation has been given to the Archaeological Site of Saint Pierre Ca-thedral in Geneva, Switzerland. Major research and exca-vation works underneath the cathedral and the surround-ing streets were carried out over an extended period of 30 years (1976-2006). The works uncovered remains of over 2000 years of urban development in the historic centre of Geneva. In 2006 the site was opened to the public. It has been sensitively adapted to accommodate visitors and an exemplary presentation has been developed, using a vari-ety of mediums to showcase an important urban archaeol-ogy site of European and world importance.The project is highly valued for the quality of the excava-tion works on a most difficult site, and for the integrated approach and excellent collaboration between archaeolo-gists, conservators and architects.

Une Médaille Europa Nostra dans la Catégorie 1 - Conser-vation a été donnée à la restauration, reconstruction et réu-tilisation de la cathédrale de Kaliningrad dans la Fédération de Russie pour avoir ressuscité la cathédrale de la ville qui avait été détruite au cours de la seconde guerre mondiale. Érigée à l’origine au centre de la vieille ville de Königsberg en 1332, seules les ruines des murs en brique de la grande église gothique avaient survécu à la guerre jusqu’à ce qu’une initiative germano-russe vienne restaurer l’édifice dans sa forme d’origine. La bibliothèque historique Wallenroth dans le clocher ouest de la cathédrale sert à nouveau de centre de recherches. Avec l’installation de deux nouveaux orgues, une tradition importante d’avant-guerre a été réintroduite, ce qui confère à cette cathédrale une nouvelle vie culturelle par le biais d’événements musicaux et d’un conservatoire pour les organistes.La restauration, la reconstruction et sa nouvelle fonction en tant que centre culturel sont hautement appréciés pour avoir évité la perte irrémédiable de cette cathédrale dotée d’une valeur symbolique capitale.

A Europa Nostra Medal in Category 1 - Conservation has been given to the restoration, reconstruction and re-use of Kaliningrad Cathedral in the Russian Federation. The cathedral was resurrected from its ruined state after being destroyed during the Second World War. Originally erect-ed in the centre of old Königsberg in 1332, nothing but the remains of the great Gothic church’s brick walls had sur-vived the war until a German-Russian initiative restored the edifice to its original form. The historical Wallenroth Library in the cathedral’s western tower now once again serves as a research centre. With the installation of two new organs, an important pre-war tradition has been re-vived which imbues this cathedral with new cultural life through musical events and a conservatory for organists.The restoration, the reconstruction and the new function as a cultural centre are highly valued for preventing the ir-revocable loss of this symbolically important cathedral.

Une Médaille Europa Nostra dans la Catégorie 3 - Contribu-tion exemplaire a été attribuée à Valéria Suruceanu de Mol-davie. Valéria Suruceanu est muséologue et conservateur au Musée national pour les arts de Chişinău depuis 1990, en charge des collections de sculptures et d’arts décoratifs. À la suite de l’indépendance de la Moldavie en 1991, elle a sau-vegardé les collections du musée, réunies pour la plupart au cours de la seconde moitié du 20ème siècle, quand la Mol-davie faisait partie de l’Union soviétique. Confrontée à de nombreuses difficultés, elle a analysé et classé par catégories les collections et a mis au point un système de documenta-tion, qui a résulté en un inventaire de la sculpture moldave du 20ème siècle au Musée national. De nombreuses exposi-tions ont été organisées, mettant en valeur l’importance des collections du musée. L’œuvre de Valéria Suruceanu est appréciée pour sa per-sévérance dans le sauvetage et la conservation d’une impor-tante collection de sculptures et d’arts décoratifs dans des circonstances difficiles sur les plans culturel, politique et financier.

A Europa Nostra Medal in Category 3 - Dedicated Ser-vice has been given to Valéria Suruceanu from Moldova. Valéria Suruceanu has been museologist and conservator at the National Museum of Art in Chişinău since 1990, responsible for the sculpture and decorative arts collec-tions. After the independence of Moldova in 1991, she safeguarded the museum’s collections, mainly assembled in the second half of the 20th century, when Moldova was part of the Soviet Union. Facing many difficulties, she analysed and categorised the collections and set up a documentation system, resulting in an inventory of 20th century Moldavian sculpture at the National Museum. Numerous exhibitions were organised, showcasing the importance of the museum’s collections.The work of Valéria Suruceanu is appreciated for its per-sistence in saving and conserving an important collection of sculpture and decorative arts under difficult cultural, political and financial circumstances.

Le Prix du patrimoine culturel de l’Union européenne / Concours Europa Nostra a été lancé en 2002 conjointement par la Commission européenne et Europa Nostra, la Fédération européenne du patrimoine culturel, en tant qu’élément de la mise en œuvre du Programme Culture de la Commission, pour rendre hommage à des initiatives exemplaires des multiples facettes du patrimoine culturel de l’Europe dans des catégories couvrant la restauration de bâtiments et leur reconversion à de nouveaux usages, la réhabilitation des paysages urbains et ruraux, les interprétations des sites archéologiques et le soin des collections d’art. La recherche et les contributions exemplaires à la préservation du patrimoine par des individus ou des organisations ont également été récompensés ainsi que, une nouveauté en 2008, les projets pédagogiques liés au patrimoine culturel.

The European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage / Europa Nostra Awards were launched jointly in 2002 by the European Commission and Europa Nostra, the pan-European Federation for Cultural Heritage, as part of the implementation of the Culture Programme, to celebrate exemplary initiatives in the many facets of Europe’s cultural heritage in categories ranging from the restoration of buildings and their adaptation to new uses, to urban and rural landscape rehabilitation, archaeological site interpretations, and care for art collections. Also awarded are research projects, dedicated service to heritage conservation by individuals or organisations and, new in 2008, education initiatives related to cultural heritage.
