Jim Broughton has served as head coach of the Colby-Sawyer baseball program for each of the 14 seasons of

the team’s existence, leading the Chargers to 191 all-time wins.

Under his direction, the Chargers captured The Common-wealth Coast Conference (TCCC) titles in 1998 and 1999 and were the runners-up in 2000. He was TCCC Coach of the Year in both of the championship years and took the 1999 squad to the ECAC Division III New England Tournament.

Coach Broughton came to New London following two seasons as an assistant coach at his alma mater, the

University of Southern Maine. He was a four-year starter for the Huskies and an All-American in both 1991 and 1992. His teams made three trips to the NCAA Division III College World Series, winning the national championship in 1991. He graduated from Southern Maine in 1992 with a Bachelor of Arts in History, while minoring in Elementary Education.

In the fall of 2003, Coach Broughton was inducted into the Uni-versity of Southern Maine’s Hall of Fame for his efforts on the baseball field. He still ranks in the top 15 in several offensive cat-egories including games played, at bats, runs scored, hits, doubles,

triples, runs batted in, total bases, walks and stolen bases.

Coach Broughton and his wife, Andrea, live in Grantham, N.H. with their two children, Emily and Caleb.

The Colby-Sawyer base-ball team finished third

in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) last season without the luxury of a strong offense. Head Coach Jim Broughton is using that as motivation for the Chargers this spring.

“I’m trying to tell them that if we score some runs, third place might be first,” said Coach Broughton, as he embarks on his 14th season with the Char-gers. “For two years in a row, runs have been hard to come by. I’m very confident that our line-up this year will score some runs.”

That does not figure to be an easy task, though, as the Chargers begin the sea-son with several opponents who are well known throughout the region as perennial powerhouses. Colby-Sawyer will be taking on Rhode Island College, Salem State, Husson and Skidmore while on their spring trip in Tampa, Fla.

“The goal is to come back .500, if not a little bit better,” said Coach Broughton. “Last year, we came back 3-8 and dug ourselves a hole, but played the second half of the season over .500 to get back out.”

PitchingWith a young team of 13 freshmen and

sophomores, Colby-Sawyer’s hopes for a TCCC crown rest once again on a veteran

pitching staff. The Chargers all-time strikeout leader, Sean Gildea (Haverhill, Mass.), was lost to grad-

uation last year, but the pitching staff remains strong.

“We still have a lot of quality arms,” said Coach Broughton. “I think that with the

combination of them throwing strikes and a good defense behind them, we’ll be a pretty strong team.”

Senior tri-captain Kris Ramsay (Gardiner, Maine) and junior Chris Baker (Essex Junc-tion, Vt.), both Honorable Mention All-TCCC

selections a year ago, look to form one of the conference’s top starting-pitching tandems. Another senior tri-captain, Justin Sakovitz (Stoneham, Mass.) and sophomore Chris Smith (Lisbon,

N.H.), will play important roles as the third and fourth starters.

Freshmen Mike Bertuccio (Mill-stone Township, N.J.), Caleb Jor-

dan (North Yarmouth, Maine), Mike Schilling (Middletown,

R.I.), Mike Guanci (Bedford, Mass.), sophomore Carter Malpass (Plymouth, Mass.)

and junior Vinny Vilardi (Boxford, Mass.) all figure to see some time as starters on the mound. The Chargers will also have the benefit of a solid bullpen this season. After a few seasons of not having reliable relief pitchers, Colby-Sawyer will count on up to 16 different pitchers to fill innings.

Junior Tom White (Lisbon, N.H.), another Honorable Mention All-TCCC selection in 2007 at pitcher and as an infielder, will see more innings in relief this season. Rounding out the bullpen are freshman Matthew Corvo (Stratton Mountain, Vt.), who will also play the outfield, sophomore Jarrett Lowe (Sudbury, Mass.), who doubles as the everyday shortstop, juniors Justin Lewis (Springfield, Vt.) and Ben Sweeney (Narragansett, R.I.) and senior Lee Chubet (Arlington, Vt.). Sweeney will also see some action this season be-hind the plate, while Chubet will see a share of playing time in the outfield.

“Realistically, six or seven guys are go-ing to see the majority of the innings, but all these arms gives us something to work with,” Broughton said. “We’ve got guys that will throw an inning, some guys might throw three innings. Other guys can give us spot starts or even some long relief. It just gives us more to work with and it also

gives them the chance to jump in and take advantage of an opportunity and turn it into more innings for them.”

InfieldSenior John O’Neil (Burrillville,

R.I.), who is recovering from a shoulder injury, will handle much of the work behind the plate this season. Freshman

Kevin Emerson (Hinsburg, Vt.) heads a deep class of young catchers that

will also battle for time, including freshmen Brandon McFadden (Dummerstan, Vt.) and Shane Hoagboon (Mayfield, N.Y.).

Much of the infield is established, with Chris Hartery (Billerica, Mass.) manning the hot cor-ner again this year. Lowe moves to shortstop and junior Chris Gaeta (Lynn, Mass.) returns at second after an injury forced him to miss the

bulk of the 2007 season. Kevin Corkum (Broad Brook, Conn.) will see some

time as a back-up to Gaeta at second base. There is competi-tion at first base, where Coach

Broughton can choose from White, Bertuccio and senior tri-captain Andrew Wadleigh (Sharon, Mass.).

Broughton has high expectations for his third baseman this season. “Chris [Hartery] is only a sopho-more, but played every game last

year and is a guy that we hope will bat somewhere in the

three, four or five hole with White and Ramsay. That’s going to pro-duce some runs,” said Broughton. “He’s a strong kid who is able to drive the ball and knock in some runs.”

Wadleigh will make an impact on the field as well as off. “[He] has re-ally stepped it up since last year. He has found the weight room, worked hard in the offseason, has come back in un-believable shape and he’s fighting to find playing time,” Coach Broughton said. “He is a leader who can take control of a practice when he needs to.”

OutfieldThe Chargers have a wealth of new and re-turning talent set to patrol the outfield. Senior D.J. Woodman (Farmington, N.H.) will have an increased roll, said Coach Broughton. Oth-er than that, not much else is settled.

“Ramsay will be our center fielder except for when he’s on the mound,” said Coach Brough-ton. “Right now, the leading candidates would be Bertuccio, Woodman and then we also have Chubet, Sweeney, Corvo and Wadleigh work-ing out there as well.

“Wadleigh may find himself a few innings out there, depending on how he’s swinging the

bat. There are also some freshmen, the two catchers, Hoagboon and McFadden,

who could see some time if they’re swinging the bat well.”

ScheduleIn addition to their spring trip schedule, Colby-Saw-yer will face three teams

who are either ranked or re-ceiving votes in the 2008 Na-

tional Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA)-D3base-ball.com Preseason Division III Poll.

The Chargers travel to No. 25 Keene State on April 9, play a

doubleheader April 19 at home against 2007 TCCC champion Curry and close out the regular season April 27 at Worcester State. In addition, the Chargers face TCCC newcom-er, Western New England, who finished last season as the Great Northeast Athletic Con-ference Champion and earned a trip to the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Champions ~ 1998, 1999 2007 Season Review

In his 13th season at the helm of the Colby-Saw-yer baseball team, Head Coach Jim Boughton’s

Chargers finished the regular season 18-17, including a 13-9 record in The Commonwealth Coast Confer-ence.

The Chargers earned the third seed in the conference tournament, losing twice (to Nichols, 1-0, and Endi-cott, 3-1) to end the season at 18-19.

Colby-Sawyer put together a seven-game winning streak, its longest of the season, from April 23 at Anna Maria to April 28 at home versus Worcester State. The Chargers won three consecutive double-headers in that span – all against TCCC competition – heading into the tournament.

A team built around its pitching staff, the Chargers were led by senior Sean Gildea (Haverhill, Mass.). Gildea, a left-hander, went 6-2 with a 1.69 ERA and three shutouts in 48 innings. Those numbers garnered him a trio of postseason honors, includ-ing TCCC Pitcher of the Year, First Team All-TCCC and the Senior Scholar-Athlete Award.

Gildea, who is in the top-10 of most major statis-tical categories all-time at Colby-Sawyer, came into the season as the Chargers strikeout leader. In Col-by-Sawyer’s TCCC tournament loss to Nichols, he fanned 17 batters, breaking the single-game mark.

Sophomore right-hander Chris Baker (Essex Junc-tion, Vt.) was 5-3 with a 1.80 ERA and seven com-plete games in nine appearances. He also had three shutouts and a save in 55 innings, being named Hon-orable Mention All-TCCC.

Junior outfielder Kris Ramsay (Gardiner, Maine) led the Chargers at the plate. In 31 games, he batted

.350, while also leading the team in slugging percent-age (.476), hits (36), triples (3) and total bases (49). Ramsey also received an Honorable Mention All-TCCC award.

Sophomore infielder Tom White (Lisbon, N.H.) hit .257 in 35 games. He led the team in doubles (9), had 28 hits and 14 RBI in addition to a 4.50 ERA on the mound in two innings. White was also selected as a conference honorable mention.

Outfielder Nate Duncklee (Farmingdale, Maine) led a group of six seniors in batting average, hitting .286, and had 16 RBI, good for second on the team.

Senior outfielder Kevan Donovan (Nashua, N.H.) had two home runs and was tied for first on the team in stolen bases, swiping eight in 10 attempts.

Senior infielder Steve Hansen (Southbury, Conn.) hit .235 in 35 games while leading the team in runs scored (23), RBI (17) and walks (12).

Seniors Jason Howse (Reading, Mass.) and Ben War-nick (South Deerfield, Mass.) hit .245 and .244, re-spectively. Warnick committed just one error in 153 chances for a .993 fielding percentage as a catcher.

The Commonwealth Coast Conference

Established in 1984, The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) provides each student-athlete with a positive experience in their pursuit of excellence, through

high academic standards, quality competition, and a meaningful student life. The con-ference sponsors intercollegiate competition among its members in a variety of sports and supports the NCAA Division III philosophy. Originally a conference solely for men’s basketball, the league included seven teams: Anna Maria, Coast Guard Academy, Curry, Emerson, Hellenic, Salve Regina and Went-worth. Roger Williams joined the conference in the spring of 1985 and Hellenic withdrew that fall, as the league remained at seven members. Also added in 1985 was a men’s cross country championship. Women’s basketball and men’s soccer were added in 1986, as Gordon College also joined the conference fold, becoming the conference’s eighth member. In 1989, Regis College began play in the conference and a softball championship was added. New England College took Emerson’s place in the conference that fall. Over the next 10 years, four more schools entered the conference, including: Eastern Nazarene (1992), Colby-Sawyer and Nichols (1994), and the University of New Eng-land (1999), putting the conference membership at 13. The TCCC has continued to grow in the number of championships offered. The con-ference will sponsor 14 championships in nine different sports in the 2007-08 season, and also offers competition in three invitational sports (golf, swimming & diving and track & field). In the fall of 2007, the conference added its 14th member, Western New England Col-lege and Gregg Kaye also became the conference’s first full-time commissioner.
