Chicago Regional Council of Carpenters Annual Fishing Tournament News 2008 Economic situation affecting the tournaments. I’m sure I don’t have to explain to you how bad the economy is right now but the tournaments have seen a major downturn which is probably due in large part to the economic situation in our country. In the Chicago area we have many carpenters out of work and most of our other areas are in the same situation. The last thing on many carpenter’s minds right now is fishing. Hopefully after a positive election things will loosen up to the point that work will start picking up to where carpenters will have some extra cash to be able to fish again. However based upon the amount of participants we must scale back the tournaments. We need about 70 boats each tournament to be able to have the same quality tournaments we have had in the past. This year we averaged 50 boats per tournament. The money is barely there to continue. As you can tell by this newsletter we have decided to print them ourselves thereby saving some money to be used other places. I am always looking for new ideas to help get us through this hard time and not have to eliminate the tournaments. If you have some ideas please let me know. I want to maintain payout to 15 places as well as dinner and prizes but everything is going to be based on how many participants and sponsors we are able to get. Please bring up the idea of becoming a possible sponsor at your local meeting to help keep the tournaments alive. The walleye tournament in March was a day to day question this year. There was ice at our launch ramp and river conditions were not favorable just before our tournament. Thank God, prayers do work. The conditions did improve somewhat and some fish were weighed-in. Congratulations to Dave Janssen and Henry Marbold from local # 16 who caught the only 6 fish limit and won the tournament. The bass tournament in September I have to say was one of our best as far as action goes. Although the lake was 4 feet above normal pool the action was great. I know many fishermen tell tales but we actually caught a lot of fish even though most were just under the 14 inch limit. It was good to see that 30 out of 50 boats weighed-in fish. I have to congratulate our Regional Council’s President/ EST Marty Umlauf and his partner Tony Ballay for placing 9 th this year. Marty will be retiring and we wish him many years of good fishing. Thanks for keeping our tournaments going. I have a funny idea that we should look for Marty to place even higher in the future since he will have more time to fish. Also congratulations to our winners Chris Rettmuller and Peter Gunther from local # 1185. I know work must be slow because they sure can fish. Hope to see you at the tournaments in 2009 and happy fishing to all. Just a final note, I want to welcome our new Chicago Regional Council’s President/EST Frank Libby who also is a pretty good fisherman. We wish him many years of great success in his new position.

Economic situation affecting the tournaments.

I’m sure I don’t have to explain to you how bad the economy is right now but the tournaments have seen a major downturn which is probably due in large part to the economic situation in our country. Volunteers Needed!

The tournaments are in need of volunteers to help with many areas. It takes a lot of time to run the tournaments and volunteers are needed to help with check-in, stuffing bags, mailings and contacting sponsors. If you helped in the past I thank you and ask for your continued support but we need new volunteers to also aid in the many tasks. The future will depend on you getting involved with helping the tournaments. Without you there is no tournament.
