BBYY LLAARRRRYY LLEEBBLLAANNCC

The Houston Safari Club has onceagain taken a giant step upward withthe top auction items for our annualconvention, “Legacy,” in 2008.

President Sally Swiedom has fol-lowed the tradition established for anumber of years by commissioning thecreation of a custom gun as a majorauction offering, the proceeds of whichgo toward conservation, environmentalprojects, sportsmen’s rights and schol-arships.

This year, however, we are going astep better. Sally has commissionedPhil Koehne of KDF Incorporated — an

internationally renowned custom gunmaker and inventor of the KDF MuzzleBreak — to create a “his and hers” pairof rifles to be offered as prime auctionitems.

She explained the reasoning behindthis decision: Men often do not buythemselves the really big rifles, becausea .375 Holland and Holland is likely toprove more useful. Women, in turn, often do not get their own .375 H&Hbecause they use their husbands’ rifles. So the idea is that this special set offerseach of the parties the opportunity toget what they may have been wanting.

Sally selected two different Blaserrifle models for the set. The gentle-

man’s rifle is the epitome of the tradi-tionally designed big game safari riflesof history: the Blaser Model S2 SafariRifle, double-barrel, in the caliber .500Nitro Express. The lady’s rifle is theunique Blaser Model R93 bolt-actionrifle in the long established safari cal-iber of .375 H&H.

Both rifles were made in Germany byBlaser, but all of the engraving, fitting, wood choice, and custom finishing thatmake each one-of-a-kind were done atthe direction of Phil Koehne and hisstaff at KDF in Seguin.

KDF was started in 1971, when itwas known as KleinguentherDistinctive Firearms. It was soon rec-

ognized worldwide for quality crafts-manship. In 1978 Phil Koehne pur-chased KDF from Kleinguenther, andhe has continued to build upon theexcellence established by the originalowner.

At the time I visited KDF, both HSCrifles were still incomplete but well ontheir way. The unique woodwork uti-lizes the finest Turkish walnut, andboth rifles have matching wood, engraving and finish, with matchinggrip caps of steel inlaid with a goldHouston Safari Club logo elephant. Theengraving and inlay are by Terry Theis

of Harper, Texas — a frequent contribu-tor to our custom guns for auction overthe years.

The double rifle will be delivered inan elephant hide case with anengraved metal elephant on the out-side. The case is designed so that therifle can be carried or stored when bro-ken down.

The bolt-action rifle, the ladies’model, was about 85-percent finishedat the time of writing. As noted, it is aBlaser Model R93 chambered in .375H&H. The engraving is unequaled byany I have seen in many years of beinginvolved in writing about hunting andfirearms.

The stocks and forearms of bothmodels are made of flawless walnutand have superb grain pattern andcolor. The finishing is immaculate.Beautiful, matching wood on both theModel R2 double barrel and the boltaction Model R93 is the work of stock-maker John Valicek, an associate ofKDF, and a skilled craftsman whosework has also been in our auctionsbefore.

The Blaser bolt-action system isunlike any I have ever before seen, with its unique straight-pull bolt actionproviding faster second and third shotsif needed. When repeating shots, thebody movement is minimized and per-formance is therefore much faster andsmoother than with any conventionalaction, allowing more time to aim andre-aim for subsequent shots. The bolthandle ball is wood, matching thestock. The rifle also has a unique sys-tem of cocking and un-cocking that ispositive, easy and safe.

The distinct bolt-to-barrel relation-ship provides a solid, one-piece inter-locking system that defies compromise. The bolt and barrel become a singleunit when locked together, eliminatingthe need for the complete action to

bear the extreme amount of stress oflarge-caliber centerfire cartridges.

Conventional locking lugs on bolt-action centerfire designs have the boltslocking into the action, which holds thebolt face against the cartridge case tohold the unit together. The bolt on suchactions is a separate entity held againstthe cartridge by the locking lugs, tightlyforcing the bolt against the action andcartridge face. This is downright primi-tive when compared to the Blaser action.

With the Model R93, one can changethe rifle from right-handed to left-handeduse simply by changing the bolt assem-bly, which can be accomplished in sec-onds; this is another of the features notroutinely available in the world of con-ventional big game actions.

But there’s more. Changing the cal-iber is the simplest I have seen andcannot be done with conventional biggame bolt-action rifles. With the Model

93, using the wrench supplied, youremove two screw fasteners that holdthe stock to the barrel, and bingo —the barrel and caliber can be instantlychanged. The barrel can be removed, another barrel of a different caliberwith scope mounted to the additionalbarrel can be installed, and the riflewill be ready to shoot and is com-pletely sighted in.

Each barrel-and-scope combinationcan be sighted in independently of theother barrels and calibers, facilitatingthe rapid caliber change. The barrelhas special machined scope mountingareas where the Swarovski scope isattached to the rifle.

The magazine can accommodatenumerous calibers, but depending onthe caliber, the magazine and bolt alsomay need to be changed. The rifle willbe delivered and auctioned set up for.375 H&H, but with the addition of

three bolts and a selected number ofbarrels, the winning bidder can choosea new custom rifle capable of handlingthe .222 Remington through the cal-iber range up to and including the .416Remington.

The engraving and metal work areunique, with hunting and animalscenes on the larger areas of theaction and distinctive patterns on thetrigger guard and other small andintricate areas of the metal parts.

The case for the ladies model is cus-tom-made for the R93 by Americaseand made specifically for this specialPresident’s Rifle. The inside of the casewill be embroidered with “HoustonSafari Club President’s Rifle 2008.”

The winning bidders for theseunique rifles will own a pair offirearms that will be the envy ofhunters and gun collectors around theworld.
