October 2008 The Gainesville Cyclist 3

President's Letter

The last of the overly oppressivehot days seem to be behind us,we now enter into what most

people consider the best cycling timeof the year.

For many people the highlight oftheir cycling calendar is the GainesvilleCycling Festival which is just aroundthe corner. Both the Santa Fe Centuryand the Horse Farm Hundred (or partsthereof) can be ridden by mostdemanding cyclist or the more casualone. If we all obey not only cyclinglaws but use common sense andcourtesy this and all of our rides will bemuch safer. I would like to ask allriders to be aware of Florida cyclinglaws (which can be found on the club'sweb site under the "Club Information"menu on the left hand side of thescreen) and strictly abide by them.

Especially with the large groups thatwill be on the road it is easy to straytoo far from the right side of the roador bike lane and cause an inadvertentclash with a motorist or another cyclist.Remember, helmets are mandatoryand mirrors recommended on all GCCrides. Let's strive to make this Festivalthe safest as well as the mostenjoyable one on record.

I would like to thank everyone whohas volunteered so far to help with thisyears Cycling Festival. This event hasgrown into one of the major rides onthe Florida Cycling Calendar. Such anundertaking would not be possiblewithout your support. We still can usehelp and those of you that may wish tovolunteer can do so by contactingRoger Pierce at 378-7063. Beforecalling, check out what is needed onthe GCC web site (http://gccfla.org/).Your additional support can help fill outthe numerous positions needed for thefestival.

I hope to see you on the road…

Social Security, Nutella, and Gearing Downby Tootie Richey

Last year, Hanna Carroll said whenyou start drawing Social Security(early of course) lets plan a bike

trip. GREAT! Then she said her sisterEva Sorge wanted to ride the MurTrail, so I wondered where that wasand said, OK. I was thinking JohnMuir Trail, West coast.

Suzanne Hall and Melinda Kokenwanted to go, so the planning began.Well, I must confess I did not do anyplanning as I barely knew whereAUSTRIA was and had no idea wherethe Mur River trail was in Austria.Hanna said it is a river so it has to bedownhill, 250 miles or 400km! So Ibecame joined at the hip with theInternet.

I took a non-credit, Adult EducationGerman course and flunked. Melindaaudited a German class at UF andactually learned. I suppose thedifference was she has German rootsand this gave her the ability to getguttural with the language. I intendedto take my instructors advise and hopesome one around me could speakEnglish should I get lost from our flock.Which I did and They did.

I learned that Nutella is big inAustria and indeed the Mur River goesdownhill. I love Nutella and love ridingdownhill, so June 10 we left for Munichor Muenchen, Germany. We chosenot to take our touring bikes as totingthem around would make climbingstairs, leaping from steps to trainplatforms, and charging up flights ofstairs at our hostels difficult. This wasa good choice.

We started from St. Michael in

Lungau, Styria ande n d e d a t B a dRadkursburg, Styria.W e re n t ed ou rinteresting bikes from,Bacher Rad-Reisen:[email protected]. Now, it isimportant to clarifywhich St. Michael onewants to go to as it iscommon for a town tohave more than onelocation. As Melindafound out at the end ofher trip.

Our trip was self-guided and wecarried our clothes in our panniers butwe stayed at hostels (HostellingInternational) and Pensions. So wetraveled light and on the cheap! I cannot say enough good things about allof the places we stayed at: cheap, clean, polite staff, good breakfasts. Asyou know the dollar has been alsogoing downhill against the Euro. Ahotel could have been 120 Euroswhere a hostel was 20 Euro.

Hanna and Eva were our reluctantleaders (as they spoke the language)and I am sure they got very tired ofhearing "What does that say?" andperhaps a few other things!! Theriding experience of our rental bikeswas sort of like riding the waves in akayak. First the wave passed fromfront wheel to handle bar down thedeeply dipped top tube to the backwheel. While the shimmy wasunnerving to me, it was notuncomfortable. They had a triple

chainring that wasfine, as was theseat. Melinda tookher seat and thatworked for her.Type in Dutch BikeVelorbis VictoriaClassic to get anidea of the frame. We must have seena million bikes andthousands of biketrails. I suggest youorder the trail map

(only available in German). It is veryclear and the path is well marked. Most of the trail is paved but skinnytires may not be best. We learned thebike trail is not all downhill.

Now for Nutella, it was everywhere,b i g b o w l s , i n d i v i d u a lpackets, etc. I don't think I had a badmeal, snack or a rude encounter. Iknew I was not in America. Since weonly rode 8 days and the longest day43 miles or 70km., the weather wasonly bad about 3 days, we spent 3nights in Gratz, got lost a little, couldgear down or hike our bikes whenneeded, and everyone was stillspeaking at the end, life was good.

I can hardly wait until our next trip.I am thinking Nova Scotia, do theyhave lobsters?? Definitely will take mytouring bike so I can really gear downand get dirty.

Take care.

2T a Thankful Adventuress
