United Way Community Impact focuses on making sure that United Way dollars make the greatest possible impact in our community.

Each program submitted for funding goes through an intense review process before any decision is made on funding. The funding process must be transparent and easily understood by investors, agencies and the community.

Collectively, volunteers contributed more than 200 hours in review of program proposals to make sure they met the criteria and addressed areas where the greatest good can be achieved.

Thanks to all of our volunteers who lend their time and talent to ensure that donated dollars get the greatest possible return in service to the community.

Advancing the Common Good is about creating opportunities for a better life for all.

United Way of Greater Lorain County is creating these opportunities by addressing three community-defined areas of impact – Strengthening Families, Nurturing Children and Youth and Caring for Basic needs.

Advancing the Common Good is less about helping one person at a time and more about changing systems to help us all. By identifying needs, developing solutions and providing resources – of both dollars and volunteers – we make an impact for the entire community.

Everyday in Lorain County, someone is in need of essential services – from finding substance abuse assistance to securing adequate care for a child or an aging parent. 2-1-1 First Call for Help and 211lorain.org link those in need with information about and referrals to health and human services for both everyday needs and in times of crisis.

get ConneCted. get answers.Website Launches as Extension to 2-1-1 First Call for Help

In 2008, www.211lorain.org launched as an extension to the existing 2-1-1 First Call for Help telephone number funded as part of the United Way’s Community Impact initiative. Like its counterpart, the site offers Lorain County residents in need vital connections to health and human service resources and information on a free, confidential and 24/7 basis.

Access is available to resources providing basic human needs, physical and mental needs, employment support, support for older Americans and persons with disabilities, support for children youth and families and opportunities to volunteer and donate.

i LiVe United.“I’ve come to realize that a truly successful community relies on the positive involvement of its citizens. I became an advocate for United Way’s 2-1-1 helpline because it offers resources and help to those individuals and families in need when it’s needed – not just on an 8 to 5 schedule.

I help those in need as an advocate for the 2-1-1 information and referral system United Way of Greater Lorain County funds with my help.

I’m enthusiastic about 2-1-1 and talk it up because I believe it is one of the best tools available to get people connected to the help they need when they really need it.”

My name is Jim. I work at Ridge Tool Company in Elyria. And this is how I LIVE UNITED.

DAY OF CARING CELEBRATES 16TH ANNUAL EVENTThe 16th Annual Day of Caring brought together nearly 700 community participants to work on 14 projects at United Way partner agencies throughout Lorain County.

Day of Caring offers United Way donors an opportunity to see their dollars at work in an “up close and personal” way. Volunteers team up with United Way partner agencies and clients to complete hands-on projects for the agencies.

The 2008 event was co-chaired by Kim Black-Brown; US Steel and Clarence Wills; American Red Cross Lorain County Chapter

day of Caring participants:

INITIATIVE WORKS TO ADDRESS FINANCIAL STABILITY ISSUEOne of the most serious issues affecting our area is the financial instability of our families. Significant increases in the costs of housing, health care, transportation, insurance and utilities have left many families borrowing more and relying on credit cards to cover many of their daily living expenses.

The increase in debt without a corresponding wage increase has left many individuals and families vulnerable to crisis and in the long term very unprepared for the future.

To begin to address this issue United Way partnered with the EITC coalition to provide free and low-cost tax preparation services during the tax season.

The results of this initial effort netted the addition of two Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites, an increase of more than one million dollars in net refunds and a savings of $787,000 in tax preparation fees for Lorain County citizens.

The EITC pilot program is an element of a larger Financial Stability Initiative that the United Way will continue to support in the upcoming years.

LETTER FROM CAMPAIGN CHAIRMAN

Amazing things happen when generous people with big hearts and endless energy focus on the goal of providing a better life for those less fortunate than themselves. Indeed, the people of Lorain County did make amazing things happen during this past year, despite facing the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression. Together, these dedicated individuals raised more than $2.8 million dollars for United Way agencies while also donating countless hours of their time and talent. Their efforts helped families in need keep food on their tables and a roof over their heads; allowed seniors to live out their lives more comfortably; aided the unemployed in gaining needed skills to find new jobs; provided children with after school activities to keep them on the right path and so much more.

During planning for last year’s campaign, we did not yet know the severity of the recession just ahead. When it became clear that the economy was faltering, the dedicated campaign volunteers at United Way and in every organization in the county did not give up. They continued to push ahead to raise as much money as possible to help their neighbors.

On behalf of the thousands of individuals that benefit from United Way agencies, I would like to thank the volunteers in every organization for their dedication and hard work. It is because of you that our fellow citizens and our communities have endured through recent difficult times and will thrive in the future as our economy rebounds.

Your caring makes a difference.

strengthening FaMiLies with Care and sUpportThey came to the Oberlin Senior Center each with their own special needs. She needed friendship and a purpose. He needed caregiver counseling, financial and insurance assistance.

He needed caregiver counseling on a “friendly” basis. He had given up his job to care for his ailing wife, his insurance company was hitting him from every angle, the government red tape was tying him in knots and he was getting little or no sleep.

She had physical problems that required major medical treatments on a weekly basis. For years, they had leaned on each other facing the battle together. But now they needed more.

The Oberlin Senior Center was their “port in the storm”. The Center provided him with assistance to get through the paperwork and red

tape and with someone to watch over his wife so that he could get some much needed rest. In turn, he became involved in projects around the Center – repairing things, gardening, any projects that needed that little something extra.

The Center offered her interaction with new people, activities and a new sense of self worth. In turn, she made scarves and hats for the needy children and for the gift shop.

The Oberlin Senior Center gave them a new strength to move forward and an “extended” family to share the ups and the downs.

The Oberlin Senior Center, a program of the Neighborhood House Association, lives its commitment to provide the best care possible for its senior participants through families serving families to make a difference.

Funds received through United Way of Greater Lorain County’s 2008 campaign will be allocated for distribution to programs in the following areas for the fiscal year beginning July 1,2009 and ending June 30,2010.

We are truly blessed to have so many generous donors, Community Builders, Leaders & Believers and volunteers – including the Employee Campaign Volunteers – who faithfully donate dollars and time to the United Way campaign. To list everyone whose support we have received on the pages of this annual report would increase its size – and cost – significantly. Being ever mindful of dollars spent, we have decided to post these names on our website only – at www.loraincountyunitedway.org. In no way does this diminish their importance to our organization or our gratitude for all they do.
