THE OL’ HICKORY STICK

2008 Truman Football Media Guide 77

In 1930, President U.W. Lamkin of Northwest Missouri State University sent a 30-inchpiece of hickory to President Eugene Fair of Truman State University. At that time, neitherman could have envisioned the impact of the “Old Hickory Stick” on the rivalry betweenthe Bulldogs and Bearcats.President Lamkin found the coveted trophy on a farm in the Northwest Missouri State

district, where Dr. Fair was born, and the two schools started playing for its possession in1931. It may not have the prestigious and familiar name of say, the “Little Brown Jug”(Michigan versus Minnesota), but observers of the annual ‘Cat-’Dog fuss feel the “Stick”should not be underrated. The two-and-one-half-foot piece of wood has been the prize for the oldest traditional

trophy game in NCAADivision II history.Truman has a decided edge in “Old Hickory Stick” meetings, capturing 43, losing 27

and tying Northwest Missouri on four occasions. Moreover, the Bulldogs have dominatedthe entire series, dating back to 1908. The Bulldogs have posted 54 triumphs, against 29setbacks and four deadlocks.

The Bulldogs dip the end of the “Old HickoryStick” in purple paint, a tradition for the vic-

tors.

Northwest Mis-souri’s final three-point try, coming with 1:32 to go,was short.

1980 - The Bulldogs trailed the Bearcats, 10-7,early in the fourth quarter on a homecoming after-noon. But they moved the ball from their 30-yard lineto the Northwest Missouri five on 12 plays. Quarter-back Craig Towbin, spotted flanker Eric Holm in theend zone for a 5-yard TD pass, and the PAT by GregDolence made the final score, 14-10.

1990 - The Bulldogs were forced to rally from a10-point deficit in the third quarter and a three-pointdeficit in the fourth period to pull out a 34-31 home-coming victory over the Bearcats. After the PAT, the Bull-dogs led 28-20, and it held up the remainder of thegame. However, Truman needed a couple of strongdefensive series late in the fourth. The final threat washalted with 1:19 remaining, as Truman defensive backRobert Merriman intercepted a pass on his 13-yardline.

1996 - Truman’s 11-year ownership of the stickcame to a heart-wrenching end when Northwest cameto Kirksville. The Bulldogs scored first, but theBearcats rolled by Truman in the first half, taking a28-16 lead into intermission. The eventual MIAA co-champion and NCAA second-round playoff partici-pant would score four more TDs in the third quarter.Truman’s Harlon Hill winner Jarrett Anderson scoredthe final TD of the game with 1:40 left. The Bulldogs reclaimed the stick from the theneighth-ranked Bearcats, 24-23, overcoming a 20-7deficit to start the fourth quarter.

Defensive end Jim Marischen sparked the Bull-dogs’ comeback by blocking a 24-yard field goal at-tempt. On the next drive, Austin Lepper made a50-yard field goal after which the Bulldogs stoppedNorthwest on its 22-yard line.

Harlon Hill finalist Eric Howe, with 1:30 left in thegame, began the Bulldogs’ final drive and connectedwith Alfonso Pugh on a 17-yard pass, but threw threeincompletions after that. Howe stayed poised and foundGeoff Jensen on the come-back route, and connectedwith Andrew Blakley for seven yards and Pugh for 34-yards to get to the Bearcat 4-yard line. Howe then madehis way to the end zone, just making the right corner totie the score at 24 apiece. Lepper’s PAT silenced aschool-record 9,500 Bearcat homecoming fans.

2002 - The Bearcats reclaimed the Hickory Stickin a thrilling contest. Bulldog receiver Andrew Blak-ley set the MIAA career reception record in the gameand his touchdown catch in the third quarter gave Tru-man a 24-21 lead.

The Bulldogs held on to that lead until theBearcats tied it with under four minutes remaining inthe game. Northwest Missouri then held Truman to athree-and-out and, after getting good field position, march in and scored the winning touchdown with 29seconds left in the game.

2004 - Northwest Missouri came into the gameundefeated and ranked third in the country, while Tru-man was still searching for its first win.
