Personality makes your spacea new, unique kind of home

Although college living may not be the most

glamorous, its what each of us puts into the

experience that really makes the difference.

The two places Ive lived in college so far,

both residence halls, really have become my

homes because of the way I outfitted them and

tried to adapt to living on my own.

When I went to Eugene, Ore., for my

freshman year of college almost a year and a

half ago, I was really nervous about getting

    homesick.

Luckily, I brought just about every poster

I owned with me so I would always have a

piece of home even though I lived far away. I

have these same posters in my room here at

the University. Ive got posters of The Doors,

The Beatles, Harry Potter, Bob Dylan and

ancient Egypt. And, of course, I have pictures

of my friends. All these things contribute to the

unique experience that is my room.

Admittedly, getting used to things like

cleaning, managing money, healthy eating and

roommates may not always be an easy part of

living on your own in college.

After all, college and all its parts are not

stress-free. But its just a part of the college

experience, which makes it both challenging

    and rewarding.

In less than a month, Ill be moving off

campus into a house. I know the move will be

hectic and very tiring, but it will be at great

feeling in the end. When I move in to my

new house, Ill have a completely new set of

challenges to take on. But Ill have another

chance to make my living space truly my own.

When we were putting together this final

apartment guide for Spring 2009, we wanted

to give students practical tips to help thetransition from apartment to apartment and

home to home. Creating a living space that

reflects who you are is one of the truest acts of

    self expression.

Though taking the pizza delivery numbers

off speed dial could be the first step to

healthy eating, it doesnt have to be the end of

saving time and money on meals. There are

ways to eat deliciously and nutritiously while

living within the means of the typical student

    lifestyle.

But often the price and time needed to

    cook deters some students.

Healthy eating is difficult, ClaireWilliams, St. Louis junior, said. I know I am

uneducated, but I just dont like the idea of

having to go to the store and have to make the

food yourself. Plus, healthy foods always seem

    to be more expensive.

Williams is not alone, said Ann Chapman,

coordinator of nutrition counseling at Watkins

Memorial Health Center. Chapman said many

people wanted to eat healthy but werent

equipped with the knowledge or resources

    to do so.

People get caught up in school, social lifeand work, Chapman said. Healthy eating

just falls by the wayside. The key to healthy

    eating is flexibility and organization.

Even though students may be short on time,

making a fast, healthy meal is easy. Chapman

said it was best to plan meals in advance,

complete with recipes and ingredients. The

    initial planning might seem time-consuming,

but when everything necessary to make a

meal is in the refrigerator, the actual assembly

can be done quickly, she said.

Amber Long, fitness c oordinator at Ambler

    Student Recreation Fitness Center, also

suggested planning meals ahead of time. But

she said that occasionally it was okay to give

    into unanticipated cravings.

You have to listen to what the body needs

or wants, Long said. Cravings often represent

    deficiencies found in the body.

Long said that all things were fine in

moderation, but that it was important to limit

HealtH(continued from 3)splurges on sugars or fat.

I eat my fair share of bad food, just

not regularly, Brian Shellenberger, Topekasophomore said . I consider a good diet to be

part of living a healthy lifestyle.

    Though moderation is

    part of that lifestyle, healthy

eating doesnt have to be all

    about sacrifice.

    I think healthy food

tastes better or at least just

as good if you make it right,

    Rob Jackson, Hiawatha

    sophomore, said.

    Nate Mass, Leawood senior,

said he made changes to hisexercise routine to try to lose weight, but he

realized there was more to being healthy than

    simply working out.

I started powerlifting in the gym, but I

felt strong, not healthy, Mass said. Then I

did a lot of martial arts, but I just felt fast, not

healthy. Now I just eat whats real.

Mass has been a vegetarian for three years

and said that he thought fresh produce tended

to cost more than processed foods, but that

he considered the extra cost to be worth the

    benefits he gained.

I stopped drinking and I dont smoke,

Mass said. Now I just put that money towards

    produce.

But Chapman said all students could makecheap and easy adjustments to improve their

    eating habits.

It makes sense to go to a

    discount grocery store,

    Chapman said. Also, calculate

    the price per

    ounce of food

    items or use

    the unit pricing

    index that many

    stores have

    available.

    C h a p m a nalso said students could

    often save when opting for

    the healthier food choice. She

    suggested buying lean cuts

of beef instead of marbled and an entire

chicken instead of pre-butchered sections as

smart ways to both save money and control

    fat intake.

    Other money-saving shopping habits

    Chapman recommended were buying store

brands and items in bulk. She said to buy

nutritious staples to keep around the kitchen

    at all times.

Dried beans are an excellent example

of a diet staple that students should keep

on hand, Chapman said. They are a greatsource of protein and can be easily stirred into

a salad, pasta or bowl of soup.

Chapman said healthy eating resulted in

a healthy body, better sleep and increased

ability to concentrate, among other benefits.

    Since moving into my own

    apartment with my own kitchen,

I havent gotten sick once because

I have been able to control what

    I eat, Jackson said.

    Chapman encouraged making

    smart decisions about food but

said a nutritious diet did nothave to be all or nothing.

    Set small, achievable goals

    for change, Chapman said.

    She suggested starting off with

planning and making a dinner at home two

nights a week, then expanding from there.

You cant make dramatic changes to eating

behaviors overnight, said Chapman. And if

you do, you are just setting yourself up for

    failure.

Whether living with a best friend or goingpotluck with a complete stranger, finding acompatible roommate can be tough.

Living with someone who leaves notes on thekitchen counter or sends messages on Facebook, rather than talking about issues in person, cancreate problems between roommates.

Laura Gibson, Talmage sophomore, saidher roommate, a friend of six years, sent herFacebook messages about the cleanliness oftheir house and left a note complaining aboutbrownie mix instead of talking to her about it.Now, Gibson feels differently about living witha friend.

If youre worried about not getting alongwith a friend, then definitely dont risk it,

Gibson said. Its a lot easier to sever ties withsomeone youre rooming with potluck than itis to lose a friend youve had for years.

Gibson assumed living with an old friendwould be a wise choice, but it backfired.

But if people cant agree about living arrange-ments with a friend, how can they choose thebest person to live with?

One option students have is the roommatefinder through Web sites, such as www.room-mates.com, which offers matching services.

The Exchange, 3100 Ousdahl Road, triesto make the process of finding a roommate

less painful by providing a roommate match-ing service. Students answer survey questionsabout their personal interests, cleanliness andpreferred noise levels.

Kelli Scheuerman, property manager at TheExchange, placed students together by usingthis matching system. She emphasized theimportance of roommates being honest intheir answers.

Often people have a different perception ofhow clean and quiet they are than the percep-tion of others around them, Scheuerman said.

If you are dirty, say it. If there is someone inview of your responses on the form, such asa parent, make sure you come in and updateyour form with responses that most accuratelyreflect your lifestyle.

Leaving issues unresolved could negative-ly affect living with other people and couldpossibly snowball into bigger issues. SpelaGasperlin, St. Louis senior, experienced thiswhen living with two other girls.

The first month of living together was alot of fun, Gasperlin said. We all went outtogether, and things were going really well.

Gasperlins relationship with one roommatebecame tense, though, because she was closerto her other roommate.

Then the tension built up and both sideskind of started doing things to piss the otherside off without outwardly doing things,Gasperlin said.

Finding a compatible roommate involvesa process, no matter who a person decides tolive with.

Scheuerman suggested keeping an openmind when searching.

Dont set out to look for someone perfectlysimilar, Scheuerman said. This is an oppor-tunity to develop as a person and grow fromembracing diversity.

Leaving notes for a roommate about prob-lems may not be the best way to go aboutresolving conflicts. If issues surface with aroommate, try dealing with the problem rightaway instead of letting it build into somethingbigger than it should be. Gibson suggestedbecoming comfortable enough with room-mates to discuss issues.

When problems arise you should just talkabout them face-to-face, Gibson said. Keepthings in perspective. Dont make mountainsout of molehills, or brownie mix, and just gen-erally be accepting.

When switching residences, studentshave to work with roommates to pack,

store, transport and rearrange theirbelongings with every move. Coordinating

a move, especially when its done two or

three times within a few years, can be apain. Here are some suggestions to make

the moving process as painless as pos-sible.

    Before the move

Chantel Augustin, Olathe sopho-more, said communica-

tion among roommateswas important. She said

students should talk withtheir roommates to decide

    what each person planned

    to bring to the residence.

I moved in with room-mates who were alreadyliving in a place, she said.

So I ended up buyingextra dishes and other stuff that we didnt

    need.

Stephanie Rhoads, Wichita junior, saidthat because her apartment was only par-

tially furnished, she and her roommates

planned in advance what each personneeded to bring.

    Before moving, students should make

sure to set up their utilities, said MattWalker, community manager at The

Reserve, 2511 W. 31st St.When getting ready to move students

also have the stress of packing. Studentsneed to limit the clutter and bring only

what they need, said Becky Hlavac

Naperville, Ill., freshman.Emily Lundberg, Manhattan junior, also

recommended that students eliminateclutter to make the move less painful.

Since Ive had to move so often, Ivegotten down to just the things

    I need, Lundberg said. It

    makes it easier.Lundberg said students

could find ways to limit clut-ter and the costs of moving

    by packing with reusable con-

    tainers.Augustin suggested students

use plastic bins to pack.If you pack in the bins,

then youre not stuck at the end withextra boxes and stuff that you dont need,

    Augustin said.

    during the move

The actual act of moving and finding

adequate transportation to move every-thing can be a stressful part of the pro-

cess.Rhoads said finding a way to trans-

    port her belongings was

    the most difficult aspect ofmoving.

I dont have a truck, andI dont know anyone who

does, Rhoads said.If students plan to rent

    a truck or trailer, Curt

Cochran, manager of 3 Menwith A Truck & Trailer, 25

SW Gage Blvd., Topeka, sug-gested that they make reservations early.

By the end of July and the first part ofAugust, its a nightmare trying to find a

    truck, Cochran said.

Samantha Smith, manager at U-Haul,845 Iowa St., emphasized the advantage of

reserving early. We recommend that as soon as you

settle your plans, you reserve what you

need, Smith said. You can reserve up to

    a year early.

It is also important to take precautionsto make sure items stay safe during travel.Cochran suggested that students wrap

items in bubble wrap and place blankets

or furniture pads on the flooraround their belongings.

In addition to careful pack-ing and moving, students

    often run into problems withstorage.

    Lundberg said the gap of

    time between

when studentsmoved out ofone place and

when they could move intotheir new place could also

    be a problem. Lundberg

said she rented a storageunit for her belongings

during that time. They had a lot of spe-

cial deals going on when we got one,Lundberg said. Theyre pretty cheap to

    rent.

Teresa Lassiter, business manager at A-1

Mini Storage, 1225 E 23rd St., said stu-dents needed to reserve a unit early.

Ive already had a few students reserv-

ing units, Lassiter said. The freshmen

probably dont know, but the more sea-soned students have figured out that you

have to start looking early. If students dont reserve a unit early,

they will often find themselves on wait-ing lists.

We have a lot of students calling, but

if they dont plan ahead, they

wont get a unit, said AnnOzorkiewicz, manager atSpace Saver Storage, 3707 W

6th St. Ive had students call-ing since last summer.

    Ozorkiewicz said students

who did use storage shouldtake precautions.

Dont pack food, dont packcandles, dont put electronics

in a unit unless its climate-controlled,she said. Kansas summers get hot, so they

need to be careful. To avoid water damage, Laisster said,

students should put crates on the floor,

and then stack their belongings on top ofthem.

Weve never had water problems, butthere can be at other units depending on

the amount of rain, Laisster said.

    Ozorkiewicz advised students against

    packing their belongings in cardboard

boxes because they can soak up moisture

that accummulates on the floors of stor-age units.

    Unless theyre putting their stuff

on pallets they shouldnt pack in card-

board boxes because cement sweats,Ozorkiewicz said.

    moving in

On move-in day, Walker suggested stu-dents move during the morning or evening

hours to avoid the heat and the traffic. If youre at a large complex like The

Reserve, its going to be crazy and hectic,he said.

Rhoads said that when she moved in,

one of the hardest parts was dealing withthe heat.

It was summer and it was sweltering, she said.

Cochran suggested students find lots ofpeople to help them move in to make the

    move go faster.

The worst thing is to not have enoughhelp, he said. If you can find a lot of

friends to help, that makes all the differ-ence in the world.

Rhoads said she and her roommateshelped each other.

Its nice having them there, she said.

Then if you need help moving big thingslike your couch, theyll help, and itll go a

    lot faster, she said.

    Cleaning. For college students living

away from home for the first time, addingthis messy and time-consuming chore to aschedule already full of schoolwork, jobs, extracurricular activities and a social life canbe challenging.

In a recent Kansan survey of 100 students, 60percent of University studentsreported their mothers as beingresponsible for most cleaningwhen the students lived athome. Ten percent reportedthat some kind of relative orcleaning service fulfilled this

role. For Matt Rissien, OverlandPark senior, moving from anenvironment where his motherand sisters kept things clean toone where he had to pick up after himself andshare space with non-relatives was difficult.

Freshman year, coming in, I lived inNaismith, Rissien said. I shared a room withsomebody for the first time ever. That washard because suddenly my cleaning habitsaffected someone else. I had to learn in my

everyday routine to pick my clothes up, keepa clean room. I learned to develop cleaninghabits.

    Becca Sabats, Prairie Village freshman,

also had to take on additional cleaningresponsibilities upon arriving at college. At home my mom did the laundry, and

she would vacuum the whole house, Sabatssaid. Now I have to wash the dishes I use.My roommate and I take turns taking out the

trash; we vacuum every coupleof weeks .

Some students come tocollege with a good cleaningroutine already in place butstill find it difficult to keep upwith maintaining their livingspace. In the Kansan survey, 55percent of respondents citeda busy schedule as the mainfactor preventing them fromcleaning on a regular basis.

Ive been responsible for everything sinceI was 8, Felicia Alvarado, Salina junior, said. Now, cleaning almost always happens on theweekends, because thats when I have time.Going to school full time and working until4 a.m. makes it difficult to keep things clean.

habits to prevent messy living spaces fromgetting out of control.

The home maintenance Web site www.CleaningExpert.co.uk recommends wipingdown the kitchen area after every meal,

having a designated area for every item toavoid clutter and spot-cleaning bathroomsinks and toilets.

Continually organizing high-traffic areasof the home is another way to prevent thecollection of dirt and clutter.

Wanda Jenicke, custodial specialist forTemplin Hall, suggested that time-strappedstudents divide jobs among roommates in

order to effectively and fairly maintain a cleanliving space.

You should trade the jobs around soyoure not always doing the same thing,Jenicke said.

Chore delegation played a key role inAlvarados previous living situation. In my last house we had a chore sheet,

Alvarado said. We would go through rotations.Good communication among roommates isthe key to keeping things clean.

Aside from doing spot-cleaning, studentsshould designate one day per week for amore thorough cleaning of the bathroom and

kitchen and intensive general cleaning, suchas vacuuming, mopping and dusting everyroom.

Regular cleaning routines help preventthe creation of environments that foster

disease and allergen carriers, such as rodents, cockroaches, flies, dust mites and fleas. In addition to thorough cleaning, the

Centers for Disease Control and Preventionrecommend proper food storage and disposalto keep pests out of the home, which is adviceSabats follows.

I always wipe down whatever area hasbeen touched by food or will be touched by

food, Sabats said. I always make sure ourmicrowave is clean.

Despite the time and energy involved inkeeping a home clean and healthy, moststudents recognize the importance of keeping

living spaces neat.A clean environment creates a better lifeenvironment, Rissien said. As hard of aneffort it is, you should try to keep your roomclean.

The poor college stu-dent isnt just a stereotype, and Mike Russo is livingproof. Like many of hispeers, he often finds it dif-ficult to juggle his moneyamong food, gas, rent, books, entertainment andother college life necessi-ties. Too often, he admits,

    the wrong necessities take priority.

    But aside from this publication,

the University offers little guidancefor students trying to balance theirbudgets.

Russo said he hadnt heard of any aidfor budgeting and personal finance.

If they do, theyre not forward enough

about it, because Im notaware of it, he said.

But better help forstudents struggling withbudgeting may comewithin the next Student

    Senate term.Libby Johnson,

Lawrence sophomore andStudent Senate executivesecretary, said Senate planned to createa visible and accessible center to helpstudents with their personal finances.

Johnson said the oldresources simply werentworking.

    Theyre veryunderutilized. Ive barely

even heard of it, and Impretty involved, she said.

Student Body President-elect Mason Heilman laidout plans for a FinancialPlanning Center to beplaced in the fourth floorof the Kansas Union.

Itll be a lot more visible andconvenient, Johnson said.

The center would be run by businessstudents and wouldprovide help and adviceto any student who mightneed it.

This could include helpwith taxes, loans, rentcontracts or financial aidapplications.

But until these plansbecome reality, the tension

between instant satisfactionand saving for necessitiesremains a common problemfor students. Russo saidhis problems started whenhe had to limit his working

    hours after graduating fromhigh school.

I had a steady income, and now I still spend just

as much with a limited income, Russosaid.

High gas prices contributed to thefinancial troubles of WillFlickinger, Kansas City, Kan.,senior.

Im a commuter; I driveabout 36 miles to school,

so gas prices really affectedme, Flickinger said.

Spending more money ongas meant less was availablefor food and fun, and it evenaffected his academics.

I took on more hours atwork, which made it a lot harder to doschoolwork, Flickinger said.

Russo still finds it difficult to keephis spending under control, but he has

taken small steps to checkhis losses. He gets all hisspending money in cash, instead of using his debitcard.

I leave my debit card athome so Im not tempted touse it, he said.

Not all students possess sufficient cookingexperience to live on their own. For those

who cringe at the thought of attempting to

prepare a meal, knowing the basics of what to

keep in the kitchen can help them figure out

    where to start.

Learn this word: colander; it means pasta,

    Alex Jennings, Overland Park freshman,

    said. Also, have measuring

    cups and, strangely enough,

    scissors. If you have these

    materials, you cant go wrong.

    Everything else you can just

    eyeball.

    Jennings said his most

    used ingredients were basics

    such as cheese, milk, eggs,

    flour, sugar and onions.

    If Im feeling particularly

    ostentatious, I might buy bell

    peppers, Jennings said.

    Amanda Payton, Overland Park

graduate student, suggested always keeping a

spatula, a large serving spoon, a saucepan, a

skillet and salt and pepper in the kitchen.

I also have my own herb garden, so I

always have fresh herbs to add to things,

    Payton said.

Although an herb garden may not beconvenient for most students, keeping a few

essential ingredients around can make any

    meal more appetizing.

I try to always have some marinara sauce

handy because you can add it to so many

things to make your dishes less bland, Payton

said. Also, I keep pasta around because its

a cheap way to make a great

    meal.

    Lindsay Pack, Wichita junior,

is the food board manager at

    Margaret Amini Scholarship

    Hall. She orders ingredients and

supplies for the halls kitchen. Its

her job to make sure students

    always have the necessities at

    their fingertips.

    Depending on what meals

    we have, chicken breasts, ground

    beef, flour, sugar, shredded

    cheese, pasta, mixed vegetables

and butter are the most common ingredients,

    Pack said.

Pack also said having a baking sheet, a hand

mixer and a blender were helpful for anything

ranging from meals to snacks or desserts.

She said it was also important to have

quick snacks in stock. Pack said the women

    in her hall usually requested

    cookies or on-the-go

snacks, such as granola bars.Jennings suggests Milk n

    Cereal bars.

As far as snacks go, I

    always have raisins and

    peanut butter ready, and

    some saltines, Payton said.

    Because most students

dont have time to co ok every

night, its a good idea to have

some quick meal alternatives, as well. These

are helpful when there isnt time to get extra

    ingredients.

I always keep some frozen ravioli in the

freezer because it keeps for a long time and

is such a great meal when you dont feel like

cooking much, Payton said. I also keep some

frozen Lean Cuisines in my freezer because

there are a lot of nights I get

home late and do not want to

spend much t ime on di nner.Aside from cooking essentials,

    any apartment occupant needs

a few basic cleaning supplies to

    keep the kitchen sanitary.

    I suggest disinfectant spray

    and clean sponges, Jennings

    said.

    Once students have mastered

the basics, they can move on

to more advanced recipes. For this, a few

    cookbooks could come in handy.

Living green isnt just a great way to con-serve resources and lessen pollution. Its one ofthe easiest ways to save money.

The word conservation is sometimes mis-understood to mean doing without, and canconjure images of sitting in the dark and coldto cut down on energy use, said Jeff Severin, director of the KU Center for Sustainability, said. There are many things a student on abudget can do to live more sustainably that willactually save them money.

Many University students have already start-ed doing small things to help the environmentand conserve resources.

We use dish towels instead of paper tow-els, Miranda Lewis-Neff, Shawnee sophomore, said.

I turn off anything Im not using at themoment, Mackenzie Click,Shawnee junior, said. We alsosave and reuse grocery bags.

One of the best ways to savemoney and energy is to cutdown on utilities. Compactfluorescent light bulbs (CFLs)can significantly lower month-ly bills in an apartment orhouse by providing the sameamount of light for one-sixththe wattage.

The Environmental Protection Agency esti-mates that a single CFL will save more than$30 during its five-year lifetime, which is abouteight times the lifespan of ordinary incandes-cent light bulbs.

If you take them with you when you move, theyll probably still be working when yougraduate and move into yourfirst home, Severin said.

    Another quick way to cut

down on utility bills is to killa few vampires thoughnot the blood-sucking type. The Department of Energydefines electricity vampiresas appliances that draw asmall amount of electricityeven when they are turned offor are in standby mode.

Some common energy-wasting appliancesfound in students homes include LCD/plasmatelevisions, laptop computers, video game con-soles and cell phone chargers. Many electronic

devices draw a small charge even when turnedoff to power things, such as clocks, and to beable to detect a remote control, such as a tele-vision remote or video game controller. Otherdevices, such as cell phone chargers, are poorlydesigned, so they dont stop drawing electricityeven when not in use.

According to the Department of EnergyWeb site, www.energy.gov, these vampires canmake up to 10 percent of a homeownerselectricity bill. Unplugging these devices is the

most straightforward way to prevent energywaste, but using a surge protector with anon/off switch is an even simpler way. Surge

protectors are designed to stop the flow ofelectricity when in off mode. That way, anenergy-wasting television, video game consoleand cell phone charger can all be stopped with

    one switch.Saving on utilities also

includes cutting down on water.According to the KU Center forSustainabilitys Web site, www2.ku.edu/~sustain, some of thesimplest water conservationtechniques include turning thewater off while brushing teeth

and shaving, and taking shortshowers instead of baths.

Some students have alreadyfound that cutting down on bottled water is agreat way to save money and reduce waste.

I have an aluminum water bottle so Idont have to buy bottled water, Kendal Forio,Lawrence junior, said. A student who uses analuminum water bottle that costs $10 instead ofbuying two bottles of water per week can save

nearly $100 per year and preventmore than a 100 plastic bottlesfrom ending up in landfills.

People who live in apartmentsand want that bottled-watertaste can use water filters. Theseproducts last for months beforetheir filters need to be replaced, which can amount to hundredsof bottles of water for about $8per filter.

According to the KU Centerfor Sustainabilitys Web site, one overlookedmethod of saving energy is using cold waterto wash clothing. Students can save more than$60 per year by using special cold-water deter-

gent and using less hot water, which can costextra electricity or gas to heat.

Shopping at used clothing or furniture storescan also cut a students expenses and can keepunnecessary waste out of landfills.

Shop at used clothing stores to get goodquality, gently used items instead of buyingnew, said Severin. Really put some thoughtinto your purchases and consider the long termimpacts of your purchasing decisions.

My mom always tells me to try to reuse

something beore I throw it away. Our house

is lled with renished urniture and old

mirrors we ound on the side o the road.

My amily tries to be as sustainable as

possible. Using recycled goods to decorate

helps the environment, and it also saves

    money.

Renting an apartment or house givescollege students an opportunity to incorporate

personal style into their living spaces.

    Unortunately, ear o losing security

deposits and limited budgets ofen keep

them rom displaying personality in home

dcor. Luckily, there are ways to saely and

creatively express yoursel without damagingthe property.

    Colorful Walls:no paint required

Although most landlords wont allowpainting, there are still un and inexpensiveways to give walls personality. ry auxwallpapering, which is completely covering awall with posters, pictures or magazine covers.Choosing wall art with uniting eatures, suchas similar colors or themes, gives the wall acohesive and wallpapered look.

I youre going to cover an entire wall, shoparound or deals on wall art so you can cover alot o space without spending too much. Posters,

especially rom movies, can get expensive.Dollar General on Sixth Street has tons

o great wall art, Aly Inglish, Overland Parkjunior, said. Te prices o the posters there aremuch lower than they would be at most stores,so you can buy a lot or decorating.

I covering an entire wall seems like too much, the same project can be created on a smallerscale. When aux wallpapering a portion o thewall, complete the piece by raming it. Tis willgive it a nished look.

Whether covering the entire wall o anapartment, or just putting up the classic AnimalHouse poster, use an adhesive that wontdamage the wall. Beore putting anything up,test the adhesive on a less visible part o the wall.I its easily removed aer a ew days, considerit sae. But asking your landlord what kind otape to use is probably the saest way to ensuregetting your security deposit back.

When on a BudgetMost college students operate on a budget.

And even the lucky ew who arent probablywouldnt mind beneting rom some decoratingdeals.

Te best time to buy urniture and accessories

or apartment decorating is a week or two aerschool starts. Tats when stores such as Kohlsand arget put their dorm accessories on sale.Tese pieces are designedwith college students styleand space limitations in mindand are usually in un colorsor prints.

raditional stores arent theonly place to nd deals either.

Always search newspapersand the Internet or deals,Kelsey Heard, Olathe

    reshman, said.Heard suggests Web sites

such as www.clevermoms.com, which lists dealsand sales on everything rom urniture to gardensupplies.

eCo-ChiC and CheapAnything can be reused to decorate a space.

Hundreds o cheap, and even ree, apartmentdecorations are waiting at the antique mall,Goodwill, garage sales and in the trash. What

may seem like junk can be restored intodecorations and urniture using just a littlecreativity. Reusing these treasures will keepthem out o landlls, too.

Te most expensive room to urnish is usuallythe living room. Luckily, old couches and tablesare easy to nd and just as easy to x up. Dontworry about pieces matching just make suretheyre comortable, cheap and t in your space.Tink o the pieces as blank canvases.

Aer cleaning an old couch, cover it with aslip cover or use patterned sheets. Pillows canalso remedy boring seating.

Mismatched cofee tables, Vstands and dressers can be painted, stained or shellacked. Shellackingallows you to nish pieces in anoriginal and inexpensive way.

Use sheet music, book pages, pieces o wallpaper, magazinepictures or any kind o paper todecorate old urniture. Ten usea shellac nish to permanentlyattach the paper.

Ive been able to apply what myamily taught me about sustainability, and whatcollege has taught me about money, to decoratemy space in a cheap but innovative way. Artisticvision and knowing where to nd deals is allthats needed to make our living spaces unique.Start looking early in order to have enough timeto make inventive alterations to reusable piecesyou nd.
