On May 19, 1992, Dr. Angelo Armenti, Jr. was appointed by the Board of Governors of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education as the sixth president of California Univer-sity of Pennsylvania. He holds a B.S. degree in Physics from Villanova Uni-versity, an MA and Ph.D. de-grees from Temple University in special and general rela-tivity, respectively. He had a distinguished 20-year career at Villanova University prior to becoming president of Cali-fornia University. At Villanova he served as professor of physics, chair of the depart-ment of physics, Dean of Uni-versity College, and Director of Planning. In addition to scholarly pub-

lications in international journals, Dr. Armenti received the Lindback Foundation Award for Distinguished Teaching in 1978, and was named an American Council on Education (ACE) Fellow in 1992, one of only thirty-two individuals selected nationally for this recognition. His book, The Physics of Sports, commissioned by the American Institute of Phys-ics, remains in print since its initial publication in 1992. Since Dr. Armenti’s arrival at California University in 1992, applica-tions have increased by 90%; average SAT scores have increased by 95 points; FTE enrollments have increased by 30%; and four-year gradu-ation rates have increased by 80%. Many new academic programs have been initiated including: Master of Social Work (MSW); Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT); Master of Science in Multi-Media Technology; Physical Therapy Assistant; Sports Management; Graphic Design, Com-puter Engineering Technology, Criminal Justice, and Legal Studies. Other University accomplishments since his arrival as president include: creation of an Athletic Hall of Fame; three National champion-ship teams (two in women’s softball and one in women’s basketball); a successfully completed $13 million (first ever) capital campaign; a new five-year capital campaign that is currently on schedule to reach its $35 million goal; a twenty-fold increase in endowment funds; the adoption by the University of the core values of Integrity, Civility, and Responsibil-ity; the adoption of a University Bill of Rights and Responsibilities; the cre-ation of the University Forum, a new governance structure; the adop-tion of a new general education curriculum; the building of the Eberly Science and Technology Center, the Kara Alumni House, the Duda Classroom Building and six modern new residence halls; the renovation/expansion of numerous other buildings on campus; and the creation of major off-campus sites at Southpointe and at the Regional Enterprise Tower in down-town Pittsburgh. Dr. Armenti has been active with the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Col-leges and Schools, and has served as Campaign Chair and President of the Mon Valley United Way. He is married to the former Barbara Malinowski and, together, they have five grown chil-dren and nine grandchildren. His hob-bies include piano, photography and sailing. President & Mrs. Armenti

Welcome to California University of Pennsylvania and another exciting season of Vulcan men’s basketball. I am confident that Coach Bill Brown, his staff and the players will continue to build upon the basketball tradition and make this a year to remember. This was a year of remarkable achievements at Cal U. In the past 12 months our academic offerings have been strengthened and expanded. Our beautiful campus continues to evolve, and our enrollment continues to grow. Our athletic teams have won statewide and regional titles and won our first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference’s (PSAC) Dixon Trophy for 2008-09. The Dixon Trophy is emblematic of athletic supremacy in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference—the PSAC, the premier Division II athletic conference in America today. We are very proud of our student-athletes, coaches and many individuals behind the scenes who are responsible for this magnificent accomplishment. I am particularly proud of our student-athletes who perform well not only on the field of play, but also in the classroom. During the 2008-09 academic year, a total of 167 California University of Pennsylvania student athletes, representing all sports, were named to the Spring 2009 edition of the Vulcan Athletic Director Honor Roll. For the sixth-straight semester, the Cal U athletic programs compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 or higher. Our athletes have put in hundreds of hours of practice, and their hard work and dedication make them winners regardless of the score. The same can be said of the coaching staff, whose devotion to their sport and their players is an inspiration. The mission of Cal U is to build character and build careers. While the formal part of the education occurs in classrooms, laboratories, and internship sites, the other part of a college education takes place in residence halls, the Natali Student Union and in various sport venues, such as Hamer Hall. Men’s Basketball and our other athletic programs provide students with an experience that helps them to learn and to grow in ways that will benefit them the rest of their lives. Teamwork is important not only on the field, but in the boardroom, the operating room and in the classroom. Many of our alumni who were student-athletes during their time here have distinguished themselves in endeavors far removed from their sport, but they have carried with them the important life lessons they have learned on the field and from their coaches, their teammates, and even their opponents. I hope that you enjoy the 2009-10 season and that you will support all of these young athletes enthusiastically.

Entering his eighth season with the ath-letic program, Frank Bauer was promoted to Associate Vice President for Athletic Development prior to the start of the 2007-08 academic year. Through his fundraising efforts, the Vul-cans have enjoyed an unprecedented amount of athletic success that was high-lighted by the school’s first-ever Dixon Tro-phy last year. In addition to fundraising, he manages a staff of several full-time fund-raisers and sports information profession-als. Bauer has a long-standing relationship with Cal U head coach John Luckhardt, as he was a coach on Luckhardt’s staff at nearby Washington & Jefferson College. Bauer served as a secondary coach for the Presidents during their Stagg Bowl ap-pearance in 1994.

A 1993 graduate of W&J, Bauer has also spent time as defensive coordinator and inside linebacker coach at Geneva College when the school featured a scholarship football program and was member of the NAIA. He, along with current Cal U defensive coordinator and as-sociate head coach Mike Conway, coached the Golden Tornadoes’ No. 1-ranked defense in 2001. In addition to his work with Geneva, Bauer coached and handled football operations for the Rhein Fire of NFL Europe in 1998 and 1999 un-der current Penn State offensive coordinator Galen Hall. The Rhein Fire won the franchise’s first-ever World Bowl Championship in 1998 during Bauer’s stay. Bauer and his wife Karen reside in Chippewa, Pa., with their son, Josh, a freshman at Cal U this year.

Over the last 18 years as Athletic Director, Dr. Tom Pucci has guided California Uni-versity of Pennsylvania to unprecedented athletic success. Last season, the Cal U athletic depart-ment claimed the school’s first-ever Dixon Trophy, which is awarded annually to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) member with the most successful all-around athletic program. The Vulcans were also successful on a national scale, as they finished in the top 10 of the Direc-tor’s Cup for a second-straight year. Since taking the helm in 1991, the Vulcans have become a powerhouse in the PSAC and on a national level. Dur-ing Pucci’s tenure, Cal U has won NCAA Division II National Championships with back-to-back softball titles in 1997 and 1998 and women’s basketball in 2003-04.

Within the PSAC over the last 18 years, the Vulcans have won 53 PSAC West crowns, 28 PSAC titles and made 57 appearances in NCAA Tour-naments under Pucci. He earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Cal State University-Sacramento in 1969. He later earned his master’s de-gree in education from Pacific University before completing his doc-torate in secondary education and education administration from the University of New Mexico. Pucci moved to a career in athletic administration after a suc-cessful eight years as the head men’s tennis coach at the University of Arkansas. He guided the Razorbacks to three appearances in both the

ATHLETIC ADMINSTRATIONNCAA Round of 16 and NCAA Quarterfinals from 1979-84 with all of the teams finishing the season ranked in the top 10 nationally. Pucci also coached Arkansas to Southwest Conference Championships in 1980 and 1981. For his efforts with the Razorbacks, he was inducted into the Arkansas Hall of Honor this fall. He started his career in administration at Cal State-Sacramento, where he supervised the institutions move to Division I in 1986. He then moved to South Carolina-Spartanburg, where he oversaw the Rifles’ move from the NAIA to NCAA Division II. Pucci and his wife Debbie reside in Beaufort, S.C., and are the parents of Michele, a Cal U graduate, and the late Camron.

Karen Hjerpe enters her seventh year as the Associate Athletic Director and 17th overall at California University of Pennsylvania. She originally joined the Vulcans’ athletics staff in 1993 as the head volleyball coach before being named Senior Woman Administrator the following year. Hjerpe coached the Cal U volleyball team for five years from 1993-97 before assuming the position of Athletic Busi-ness Manager. She was then promoted to Associate Athletic Director in 2003. Hjerpe, who is one of only two vol-leyball coaches in school history with 100-plus career wins, serves as school’s coordinator of the CHAMPS/Like Skills program and the Student-Athlete Advi-sory Committee (SAAC). In addition to her duties with the athletics program, she teaches several on-line classes each

year. She has spoken at several national forums, including the 2003 NACWWA Fall Forum and the 2004 NCAA Convention. Hjerpe serves as the PSAC Athletic Director’s liaison for volleyball and is a former member of the NCAA Division II women’s volleyball committee. A 1991 graduate of PSAC West rival Gannon University, Hjerpe earned her undergraduate degree in accounting. She added a pair of master’s degrees from Cal U in business and performance en-hancement and injury prevention in the past decade. Hjerpe recently completed a terminal degree in instructional management and lead-ership at Robert Morris University. Hjerpe lives in Peters Twp., Pa., with her three children, Todd, Brooke and Erin.

Mike Meyer is an assistant pro-fessor in the Department of Health Science at California University of Pennsylvania. In addition to his teach-ing responsibilities, he serves as the head athletic trainer with the men’s basketball team. Meyer received his bachelor’s degree in athletic training from Waynesburg College in May of 1997. After graduating, he was employed at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Sports Medicine Center where he was the head athletic trainer at Albert Gallatin High School. Meyer re-ceived his master’s degree in physical education with an emphasis in ath-

letic training from Ohio University in 2001. After receiving his master’s degree, Meyer worked as an assistant athletic trainer at Bloomsburg University. He was primarily responsible for medical coverage of the men’s bas-ketball, baseball and soccer programs. In 2003, Meyer became the head athletic trainer for the men’s basketball team at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn. In March 2006, he was credited with saving the life of a student athlete who collapsed as a result of cardiac arrest during practice. This event lead Meyer to serve on several committees and organizations such as the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) Inter-Association Task Force on Sudden Cardiac Arrest in Athletes; the Nashville/Davidson County Public Access of Defibrillator (PAD) program; and the American Red Cross Crossing Paths program of Middle Tennessee. Meyer has become an advocate for automated external defibrillators (AED) in public facilities. He led a proj-ect resulting in the purchase of 10 additional AEDs for public access on Vanderbilt’s Athletic Campus as well as present-ing at the national, state and local levels regarding the im-portance of early access to AEDs. Meyer is currently working on his doctorate degree in Administration and Leadership at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Meyer is a member of the NATA, Pennsylvania Athletic Trainers’ Society, and has been a Pennsylvania licensed ath-letic trainer since 2001. A native of Johnstown, Pa., Meyer resides in Bentleyville, Pa., with his wife Kris and their two children, Brennan and Kami.

CAL U MEN’S BASKETBALL ulcansV Cal U enters the 2009-10 season in the position of flying under the radar. After missing the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament for only the third time this decade, the Vulcans return a more seasoned team that is eager to improve upon last season’s 13-13 overall record.

Head coach Bill Brown opens the year with a wealth of options in the frontcourt with the return of senior Chris Moore and sophomore Kelsey Williams, along with the addition of junior transfers Rashawd Hatten and Andrew Young. With Hatten’s versatility, the trio of Williams, Moore and Hatten could be on the court at the same time throughout the season.

After redshirting in 2007-08, Williams proved to be one of the top young players in the league last season. He became the first player since Boris Mesnager in 2005-06 to lead the Vulcans in both scoring and rebounding. Williams, who was selected the PSAC West Freshman of the Week four times last year, played his best toward the end of the season averaging nearly 18 points and eight rebounds over the final eight games.

With his lengthy 6-8 frame, Moore gives Cal U a dominant defensive force in the paint. He finished last year as the PSAC’s leader and 14th in NCAA Division II with 2.6 blocks per game. A transfer from Morgan State (Md.), Moore also thrived down the stretch by averaging over eight points, six rebounds and four blocks in the last five games of the year.

Young figures to make an instant impact after transferring from Harcum College in Philadelphia. He features the ability to score from inside the paint and on the perimeter. Hatten will give Brown another impact newcomer who is capable of playing three different positions. A good passer and defender, he features a good touch from the perimeter for being a 6-8 swingman.

Junior forward Anthony Vaughn also provides depth to the frontcourt after missing last year due to injury. He features big-game experience after playing in 20 games as a reserve on Cal U’s Elite Eight team of 2007-08.

In the backcourt, the Vulcans feature tremendous depth with the return of senior Jerial Nixon, junior Joe Berenato and sophomores Chad Tipton and Travon Vann.

Nixon earned All-PSAC West honors last year after finishing second on the team in scoring and third in both rebounds and

assists. The 6-1 guard made a team-high 36 three-pointers and was one of the best free-throw shooters on the squad. Playing at a slimmer weight than last year, Nixon benefited from playing in Europe over the summer.

Vann is perhaps the most improved player after spending significant time in the weight room over the summer. One of the best defenders last year, he has improved his all-around game after missing the last month of the year due to injury

Berenato and Tipton give the Vulcans a pair of perimeter players with the ability to shoot from beyond the arc. Berenato led the team last year in both three-point and free-throw percentages while playing primarily off the bench. Tipton saw significant action as a true freshman and provides difficult match-ups with his skill set and size.

Despite the experience in the backcourt, junior transfer Travis Williams figures to open the season as the starting point guard after a solid preseason. A transfer from Potomac State in West Virginia, he is a slashing guard with the ability to find open players.

Fellow newcomer LaRon Byrd and redshirt freshman Tim Tyree will battle for time behind Travis Williams at the point position. Last year, Byrd led the Philadelphia public league in scoring for most of the year.

With the increased depth and varying skill sets found throughout the roster, Brown figures to have the Vulcans challenging for a spot in the PSAC Tournament and contending for their second league title in three years.

In his 13 seasons as head coach, Bill Brown has continued to enhance the rich history of the California University of Pennsylvania men’s basketball program.

During his time with the Vulcans, Brown has amassed a record of 271-110 to become the winningest coach in program history. He has guided Cal U to eight 20-win seasons with the Vulcans qualifying for the PSAC Tournament

in 10 out of 13 seasons and advancing to the ‘State Game’ four times, winning it twice (1998-99, 2007-08).

The 2007-08 campaign offered Brown and his staff one of the more challenging tasks of his Cal U tenure. Featuring four new starters, the Vulcans registered a 28-6 overall record, won their first PSAC Championship since 1999 and advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight for the first time since 1996. The 28 wins are also the second-most in school history. Brown has been named the PSAC West Coach of the Year in two of the last three seasons and five times during his 13-year tenure. Prior to his time at Cal U, Brown served as head coach at Division III Kenyon College for eight seasons. Under his direction, the Lords qualified for the NCAA Division III Tournament in back-to-back seasons after posting 20-plus wins in 1993-94 and 1994-95. In 1993-94, Kenyon won its conference championship tournament and earned the top seed in the NCAA Tournament before finishing the year with a 24-4 record. Brown started his head-coaching career at Sacramento State University and coached the Hornets for two seasons during the program’s transition to NCAA Division I. He followed his time at Sacramento State with a season as an assistant

HEAD COACHcoach at the University of Tennessee under Don DeVoe. A native of Ohio, Brown started his coaching career at Ohio University after a successful playing career for the Bobcats. As a player, he was a three-year starter and two-time, all-conference selection for the Bobcats, who won a pair of Mid-American Conference (MAC) titles and played in two NCAA Tournaments during his playing career. After four seasons at Ohio as a coach, Brown served a one-year stint as an assistant at Kent State University before accepting the top assistant position with legendary coach Eddie Sutton at the University of Arkansas. His duties included serving as recruiting coordinator, assisting with on-the-floor coaching academic counseling, scouting, and directing Razorback Basketball Camp. In each of Brown’s five years with the program, Arkansas made NCAA Tournament appearances, won two Southwest Conference Championships, and remained in the Top 20 rankings. In 1984 and 1985, Brown was rated as one of the top five assistant coaches and recruiters in the nation by the Basketball Times. Brown was named the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Regional Coach of the Year in both 2007 and 2008, and was selected to serve as head coach in the senior all-star game at the 2007 NCAA Division II Championship Weekend in Springfield, Mass. Originally from Toledo, Ohio, Brown has served in every facet of the game of basketball as a player, a coach and an administrator. Brown earned his Bachelor of Science degree in 1974 from Ohio with concentrations in English, Sociology and Social Work.

He and his wife Christy reside in California and have two grown chi ldren, Aaron and Kerra, and three grandchildren, Jalen, Elijah and Kingston.

California University Television (CUTV) is the University's cable tele-vision station, which is owned and oper-ated by the Student Association, Incorpo-rated. CUTV is seen in nearly 100,000 homes, 24 hours a day on the Charter Communications, Armstrong and AT&T cable systems. The mission of CUTV is to produce and provide programming of regional community interest, while providing valuable "hands-on" educational experience for interested students. This applied learning supports the mission and goals of California University, as well as the priorities and imperatives of the State System of Higher Education. Students can develop skills in television technology through experience in a vari-ety of technical areas including camera work, editing, direction and other production roles, as well as on-air talent positions. California University Television produces a variety of informa-tional, educational, and entertainment programs. For example: CUTV Newsletter - live news show, a variety of local government meetings including the Washington County Commissioners, a sci-ence show called Elements, an aerobics show - No Sweat, and many more. CUTV is heavily involved with the university and area high school sports coverage. Over the past several years, CUTV hasproduced all of California University’s football and basketball contests, as well as various volleyball, soccer, baseball and softball events. CUTV also produces a weekly coach’s show for the sport in season. CUTV also produces a High School Football Game of the Week, with several of these contests carried live to a statewide audience via PCN. To its credit, CUTV has been recognized by many national organizations. The National Association of Collegiate Broadcasters (NACB) awarded CUTV “Best in the Nation” for its news and sports, as well as station of the year, 1997-98. The station has also received multiple TELLY awards for its sports, news and documentary coverage. In addition, CUTV has received awards from the Society of Professional Journalists, Commu-nicator, Videography and Axiem organizations. Offices and studios are located in the Natali Student Center. CUTV maintains a fully loaded production truck capable of producing multi-camera field events. The program employs a staff of three professionals and enjoys a student membership of over 40. For more information con-tact J.R. Wheeler, Assistant Dean of Student Services, Room 150 of the Natali Student Center, phone 724-938-4303 or e-mail: [email protected].
