Goshen College student-athletes train and compete in one of the best small col-lege athletic facilities in the nation. The Roman Gingerich Recreation-Fitness Center, which opened in 1995, is home to the Maple Leafs’ 14 intercollegiate athletic teams and is one of the newest additions to an ever-growing college campus. The $7.3 million facility houses a variety of athletic and fitness-related activities. Whether you are a member of

the golf team hitting balls on the indoor range or a basketball player running on the 200-meter indoor track, the Gingerich Center offers athletes every chance to train and compete successfully.

The luxury of such a large athletic training facil-ity allows athletes to train when their schedule permits. The recreation-fitness center is open from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. throughout the week, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, and 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Sunday. With these hours, athletes also have the opportunity to train and compete without sacrificing their academic pursuits. Dur-ing their respective seasons, Goshen teams can all take advantage of the facility in a three-hour time frame and are not forced to practice at odd hours. The spring sports season brings five Goshen teams into the facility at one time. The golf team is able to hit balls in one area, while the softball team takes cuts in the batting cage, the baseball team has infield practice and the track-and-field squad trains on the indoor track. Not many institutions can boast of such an efficient use of time or space, and that is one reason Goshen has continued to excel both athletically and academically.

GOSHEN, Ind. – Expectations can be a funny thing when you look at a season on the verge of starting. Sometimes those expectations crush a team and sometimes they create a path to success. Or in instances like the 2009-10 Gos-hen College men’s basketball team, they just create an opportunity to prove some-thing. Not knowing what the expect from the Maple Leafs, Mid-Central College Conference coaches picked Goshen to fin-ish eighth in the ultra-competitive league. Despite returning four starters and sev-en lettermen, that is exactly the way head coach Gary Chupp wants it. Whether others recognize it or not, Chupp knows his team has the potential and talent to rise to the top of the MCC standings in 2009-10. Whether or not the team that finished 14-17 – including 5-11 in the MCC -– a year ago can make the drastic turnaround will rely heavily on how quickly a large group of newcomers can blend with the returning core of players. “I am really excited about the mix of players we have because we do bring back a lot of experience, but also have brought in a very talented recruiting class,” Chupp

explained. “They have come together quickly with the young guys bringing a lot of energy to balance with the experience and maturity of our upperclassmen.” The Maple Leafs have nearly 80% of their scoring returning, but have often struggled to find consistent second and third scoring options for three-time All MCC First Team Selection Errick Mc-Collum II. The six-foot, two-inch senior guard averaged 22.8 points a game last season, is just six points shy of 2,000 for his career, and only 283 short of the all-time Goshen College record. A pair of community college transfers join the Goshen starting lineup imme-diately and offer a variety of challenges for defenders. Another transfer, Simon Szablicki is the epitome of a basketball player. Overall, depth is certainly a strength of the 2009-2010 Maple Leafs. Don’t know what to expect from the 2009-2010 Maple Leafs? Expect big things? Expect excitement. Expect!

7 – MAPLE LEAFS BASKETBALL

Gary Chupp begins his third season as head coach of Goshen College in 2009-2010 following a historical 19-12 record in his first season and a 15-16 mark at the helm of the Maple Leafs last year. Chupp arrived after a nine-year stint as Bethel College (Kansas) head coach, posting an overall record of 123-136 and a Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference mark of 84-74. Chupp becomes Goshen’s 13th head coach in the program’s 53-year history. In his nine seasons as head coach, Chupp led the Bethel Threshers to KCAC titles in both 1999 and 2003 and was named KCAC Coach of the Year in both seasons. His 2003 squad made Bethel’s first-ever appearance in the NAIA National Tournament, while Chupp coached two KCAC Players of the Year, four NAIA All-Americans and nine NAIA All-American Scholar-Athletes during his tenure at Bethel. Chupp grew up in Goshen and is a 1987 graduate of Bethany Christian High School, where he was a First Team All-Elkhart County High School Basketball Selection. In addition to his coaching duties, Chupp serves as an assistant professor of physical education at Goshen. He resides in Goshen with his wife, Melissa, and their three children: Madilyn, six, Tyson, three, and Cori, one.
