Game 20 • Presbyterian College at Gardner-Webb • January 21, 2010 PC Men’s Basketball Game Notes

COMPARISON TO OTHER NCAA DIVISION I TRANSITION SCHOOLS The Presbyterian College men’s basketball team has multiple players in the NCAA rankings among other Division I transition schools. Chase Holmes is seventh in points per game (14.8) through games played through Jan. 14. His 44.6 percent shooting from the floor is fourth best. As a team, PC has the highest free throw percentage among reclassifying schools at 69.6 percent.

GETTING BACK QUICKLY Against Winthrop, the Blue Hose may have committed 17 turnovers (while forcing 16). However, the turnovers did not hurt PC as bad as one would think. In the game, the Blue Hose allowed just 10 points off their miscues while tallying 13 in the game. On a similar note, PC gave up just four fast break points while accounting for six of its own.

FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING In the overtime win over VMI, two PC student-athletes recorded their first double-doubles of their career. Jake Troyli tallied 16 points and 13 rebounds while Walt Allen accounted for 11 points and 10 boards off the bench. By recording this feat, it marked the first time in PC’s Division I history that two student-athletes had recorded a double-double in the same game. It also was the first time that six players had scored in double figures against a Division I opponent.

MORE CAREER HIGHS In addition to Jake Troyli’s career-high 13 rebounds and Walt Allen’s career-best 11 boards, two other student-athletes recorded career highs. Ryan Hargrave netted a career-high 12 points while pulling down a career-best eight rebounds. His 31 minutes played also was a career high. Kevin Davis, who came off the bench for 17 productive minutes, grabbed a career-high four rebounds. Jake Troyli also blocked a career-high five shots in the game.

THEY CALL THEM FREE THROWS FOR A REASON Newcomer Travis Smith has been exceptional in his role this season. In addition to being a solid all-around player, Smith has been Mr. Clutch from the foul line. He has drained 17-of-18 shots for a 94.4 shooting percentage from the charity stripe in Big South Conference play. He leads the league in free throw percentage.

WHERE THEY STAND In Big South Conference play only, the young Blue Hose continue to leave their mark. Chase Holmes is third in scoring (18.8 points per game) and is fifth in field goal percentage (51.1). Jake Troyli is seventh in blocked shots (1.17 per game). Holmes is also second in minutes played (35.50) while Khalid Mutakabbir is fourth (35.00) and Troyli is seventh (34.17).

SMITH’S CAREER NIGHT Rookie Travis Smith had one of his most productive nights of his young career against the Flames on Jan. 7. Smith, in 29 minutes of play, established two career highs. He dropped in 18 points on seven-of-10 shooting from the floor, including canning four-of-five attempts from behind the arc. The point total was the second highest on the team, just one behind Chase Holmes’ 19 points. Smith, however, was not one dimensional. He grabbed a career-high five rebounds

.

BETTER AT HOME When looking at the statistics, the Presbyterian College men’s basketball team plays much better at home than its 2-3 mark. In five games at the Ross E. Templeton Center, the Blue Hose are averaging 68.4 points per game while holding the opposition to 65.2 points per contest. On the road, PC is scoring just 55.5 points per game. Away from Clinton, S.C., two players score in double figures for PC while do at home.

SPREADING THE WEALTH The Presbyterian College men’s basketball team spread the court against Coastal Carolina on Jan. 4. The Blue Hose had just six players score points for them. However, four of the ones reached double figures. Sophomore Chase Holmes tallied a team-high 15 points while Jake Troyli and Zach Faircloth each accounted for 12. Khalid Mutakkabir had 11.

MUTAKABBIR’S GAME After compiling four points and three rebounds in the first 20 minutes of play, rookie Khalid Mutakabbir accounted for seven points and seven rebounds in the final stanza. By doing so, Mutakabbir recorded his first career double-double. It also marked just the second double-double of the season by a PC student-athlete. In the season opener at Clemson, freshman Zach Faircloth had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

FAIRCLOTH FEELIN’ IT First-year student-athlete Zach Faircloth reached double figures for the sixth time in his young career. In the game at Coastal Carolina, Faircloth totaled 12 points in the game. The significance of it – the contest was the first time in those six games that all of Faircloth’s points have come from behind the three-point line. Faircloth was also just three off his career high of 15, which came at Marquette. Of his 10 field goal attempts, nine were behind the arc – and he hit four.

CHANGE IN PLAY At Charleston Southern, the Blue Hose connected on 25-of-33 free throw attempts as they attacked the rim. Against Coastal Carolina, PC did not head to the charity stripe until the second half – and attempted just six free throws in the game. For the game, head coach Gregg Nibert’s team hit four-of-six shots from the foul line. However, PC’s outside shots were falling more so than against the Bucs, thus the reason for staying outside.

A PC Player Posted A Triple-Double ...According to current PC records no PC men's basketball player in school history has ever recorded this feat.

THE LAST TIME ...BOOSTING THE AVERAGE Sophomore Chase Holmes nearly matched Charleston Southern’s Jamarco Warren in the offensive category on Jan. 2. Holmes came out of the gate firing, sinking 16 points in the opening 20 minutes of play. Holmes finished with 26 points, marking the third time this season and fourth time in his career that he has tallied at least 20 points in a game. Prior to the CSU game, the last time Holmes had scored in the 20’s came at No. 10/11 North Carolina, when he dropped in a PC-tying record in Division I play 29.

SHARP-SHOOTING SMITH Rookie Travis Smith had his best collegiate offensive output during the first game of 2010. Smith started against Charleston Southern yet played just 29 minutes due to foul trouble. However, in limited action he connected on four-of-six from the field and canned seven-of-eight shots from the charity stripe for a career-high 16 points.

AMONG THE BEST IN THE BIG SOUTH Sophomore Chase Holmes has etched his name among the best in the Big South Conference. Through Jan. 2, Holmes was 10th in scoring with 14.1 points and seventh in field goal percentage (43.4). However, redshirt-freshman was also in the rankings. Troyli is 13th in scoring (12.9) and ninth in field goal percentage (43.2). In conference games only, Holmes is fifth in scoring (19.3), Troyli is 16th (13.3) and Travis Smith is 22nd (11). Holmes is fourth in steals (2.00) and seventh in field goal percentage (53.7). When it comes to minutes played, Troyli leads the league (38), Holmes is sixth (35.33), Khalid Mutakabbir and Travis Smith are eighth (34).

DAVIS DISHES IT OUT Sophomore Kevin Davis had a solid game against the top-25 Florida Gators on Dec. 29. The second-year player did not score a point, but pulled down a career-high three rebounds and dished out a career-high five assists, also establishing a team high for the game. In 23 minutes of play, Davis did not commit a turnover.

THAT DOESN’T HAPPEN OFTEN Against the Gators, sophomore Chase Holmes was held to single digits for just the second time in the last 10 games. He accounted for nine points, five boards and dished out two assists. Holmes had scored 12 points in each of his previous two games after being held to just five points in a loss at Ohio State.

THE BIG ZACH ATTACK Rookie Zach Faircloth put together his best offensive performance in his young PC career at Marquette. While playing a career-high 39 minutes, Faircloth drained six-of-10 shots for a career-high 15 points. Three of the shots were from downtown, marking the third time in his career he has hit at least three from

behind the arc in a game. His six made shots also marked a career high while hitting a career-high 60 percent of his shots.

The 2009-10 season will be head coach Gregg Nibert’s 21st in charge of the Presbyterian College men’s basketball team. The winningest coach in the program’s history, Nibert has led the Blue Hose to 344 wins during his 20 years at the helm of the team. Overall, PC has compiled a record of 344-248 during his tenure. In his first season in the Big South Conference, Nibert guided the Blue Hose to a .500 record, finishing the year 9-9 in conference play. The squad put together some tremendous wins, including victories over UC Davis, San Jose State and Army in non-conference play. During the Big South portion of the schedule, Nibert’s team began its history in the league by posting wins at Coastal Carolina and High Point. The squad was on TV three times, including the Nov. 10 season-opener at Duke, which was televised by ESPNU. The game marked the first nationally televised contest for any Blue Hose team in school history. Al’Lonzo Coleman was recognized as a second-team all-conference selection for his tremendous effort while also garnering a place on the all-academic team. Nibert is the first men’s basketball coach in Presbyterian College history to reach the 300-win plateau, an honor he reached during the 2005-06 season after becoming the first to accomplish 200 wins at PC in the 2000-01 season. Chase Holmes picked up the Freshman of the Week award aver scoring a career-high 24 points en route to a victory over VMI in which PC held the Keydets

to 38 points below their NCAA-leading points per game average. During his 20-year tenure at Presbyterian College, Nibert has compiled six 20-win seasons. His Blue Hose teams finished in the top four in the South Atlantic Conference (SAC) regular season standings 14 times, winning the SAC Championship twice (1992-93 & 1996-97) and the Food Lion SAC Tournament title once (1995-96). He has also been named the SAC Coach-of-the-Year twice for his efforts (1993 and 1997). Nibert is also the only coach in the history of PC basketball to lead the institution to two different postseason tournaments; guiding the Blue Hose to the NAIA National Tournament in 1993 and the NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Tournament in 1996, 1997, 2003, and 2006. Nibert is also the only coach in the history of the SAC to coach a squad to the “Sweet 16” of the Division II Tournament. Even more impressive, Nibert has seen 51 out of his 51 seniors graduate from Presbyterian during his tenure. Last season, Nibert guided the Blue Hose into their first NCAA Division I season. Nibert led PC to its first ever win at the NCAA Division I level on Dec. 1, 2007 when the Blue Hose defeated Big South Conference foe Radford, 62-60, at the Templeton Center. Overall, PC finished its first NCAA Division I season with five victories. The Blue Hose won all five of their games at home to enter the 2008-09 campaign in the midst of a 12-game home winning streak, which places them tied for the 14th longest active home winning streak in all of NCAA Division I men’s basketball. One year earlier in their final year in NCAA Division II in the 2006-07 season, the Blue Hose posted a 20-9 record to finish with two consecutive 20-win seasons. PC concluded SAC regular season play in second with a 12-4 mark and advanced to the Food Lion SAC Men’s Basketball Tournament semifinals where they fell to tournament champion and NCAA Division II Elite Eight participant Wingate. In the 2005-06 campaign, PC compiled a 25-10 overall record including a 10-4 ledger in the South Atlantic Conference, good for a tie at second place in the league. The Blue Hose advanced to the finals of the 2006 Food Lion/SAC Tournament, which earned them an at-large bid to the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Tournament, where they advanced to the semifinals. In the 2004-05 season, Nibert led the Blue Hose to an 18-11 overall record and a tie for third place in the SAC regular season. In addition, the Blue Hose advanced to the semifinals of the 2005 Food Lion SAC Tournament. Nibert led the Blue Hose to a program record-tying 27 wins against nine losses in the 2002-03 season. The team compiled a 9-5 mark in SAC play, good for a fourth-place finish. In the Food Lion SAC Tournament, PC upset #1 seed Carson-Newman College 69-52 in the semifinals before falling 71-62 to the #3 seed Lenoir-Rhyne College. The Blue Hose received an at-large bid to the NCAA Division II South Atlantic Regional and entered the postseason tournament as the No. 8 seed. In the opening round, PC upset #1 seed and No. 13-ranked Columbus State University, 71-59. In the semifinals, PC knocked off the

the Coach of the Year for the state of South Carolina, the South Atlantic Conference and NAIA District 26. Well respected among fellow coaches, Nibert has been a member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches for 30 years and has also been a NABC Division II Basketball Congressman. Nibert has also established one of the largest basketball team camps in the country over the course of his time at PC. The Camp of Champions Team Camp is in its 19th year and has attracted thousands of kids to the Presbyterian College campus. Nibert, a 1979 graduate of Marietta College, began his coaching career at Rice University where he served as an assistant coach under Mike Schuler, who would later earn NBA Coach of the Year honors with the Portland Trailblazers. In 1981, Nibert moved with fellow Owl aide Butch Estes to Clinton, S.C., when Estes accepted Presbyterian’s head coaching job. The Blue Hose would record a 57-35 ledger over the next three seasons, including a pair of 20-win campaigns. Nibert then moved to Furman University as a part-time assistant coach under Paladin mentor Gene Davis. One year later, Estes took Davis’ spot at the helm of Furman’s program and Nibert was shifted to the full-time assistant’s post, a slot he would man until being named Presbyterian’s 17th head basketball coach on April 26, 1989. While a student-athlete at Marietta, Nibert, a native of Grove City, Ohio, earned Most Improved Player honors during his junior season and was named the team’s Most Valuable Player following his senior campaign. Nibert is married to the former Peggy Harling of Simpsonville, S.C., and the couple has two sons, Shaun (19) and Van (15). Shaun is a sophomore at PC, and Van is a sophomore at Clinton High School.
