The UC San Diego rowing teams call San Diego Mission Bay home for all workouts and regattas. Consisting of 4,600 acres, the

“World’s Finest Aquatic Playground” is a rowers paradise.

In addition to several dual meet competitions, UCSD competes on Mission Bay in the San Diego City Championships and the San Diego Crew Classic, the largest spring regatta in the United States. UCSD’s Boathouse is located on Mission Bay and serves as a central point for all Triton workouts. In addition, the rowing team trains regularly in the outstanding weight room facility at RIMAC, UCSD’s Recreation, Intramural and Athletic Center.

Zach Johnson enters his sixth season with UC San Diego men’s crew team and fourth as head coach in 2009-10.

Johnson’s squad put together a record-breaking season in 2008-09, capturing the Cal Cup at the San Diego Crew Classic for the second time in three years and having the varsity eight ranked in the top-25 by the US Rowing Collegiate National Polls every week during the season. The Tritons varsity eight and second varsity eight also placed second at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships, while the team fi nished third overall. Johnson was named the WIRA Coach of the Year in recognition of his leadership and his team’s outstanding peformance. As a result of their incredible season, the varsity eight earned an invitation to the prestigious Intercollege Rowing Association Championships for the fi rst time in program history, joining perennial powerhouses Stanford and Cal as the only California schools ever invited to the IRA Championships.

In 2007-2008, the varsity eight set another program record, as they were ranked 23rd nationally. Varsity would also capture its fi fth-straight San Diego City Championship in 2008. Johnson also led the second varsity eight to the team’s fi rst gold medal in a decade at

the WIRA Championships. The second varsity eight then became the fi rst varsity or junior varsity boat to make it to the Grand Final at the ECAC National Championships, placing sixth out of 18 squads.

After serving two years leading a successful novice program, Johnson set multiple school records in his fi rst season as head coach. During the course of the 2006-07 campaign, Johnson directed the crew to an undefeated fall season and its fi rst win at the Newport Fall Regatta. The team set a new benchmark at the San Diego Crew Classic, where they won the prestigious Cal Cup Trophy for the fi rst time in program history. After sweeping the San Diego City Championships the team was able to medal in four events at the WIRA Championships. Three of the boats fi nished within one second of fi rst place, including the varsity eight, which was involved in the closest three-way photo fi nish in conference history. The team reached new levels of recognition in 2007 as UCSD was ranked in the top 25 in the US Rowing National Collegiate Polls for the fi rst time in the program’s 40-year history.

At the end of the 2006-07 season, Johnson was invited to “guest” coach for a month at Yale University. While at Yale, Johnson coached the JV and 3V athletes as they prepared for the oldest intercollegiate sporting event at the Harvard-Yale Regatta. The Yale JV was able to surprise a heavily favored Harvard boat, which had beaten them at both the IRA Regatta and Eastern Sprints weeks earlier, winning the event by over 15 seconds.

In 2005-06 Johnson directed the novice program to success, as both his 1st and 2nd frosh/novice boats medaled at the WIRA Conference Championships, with the novice A fi nishing less than a second out of 1st Place. At the ECAC National Invitational Regatta, the UCSD novice

eight set a program record by placing second at the event. The fi rst time any UCSD crew had ever medaled on a national stage. Most impressive was the fact that the boat was made up nearly entirely of walk-on athletes.

Johnson joined the UCSD coaching staff in 2005 as novice coach. With an entirely walk-on novice team, the boats enjoyed a highly successful season. UCSD won all of their dual races and went on to their best result ever at the San Diego Crew Classic, fi nishing fourth in the Grand Final. UCSD Novices went on to place second at the WIRA Championships by less than a second. The novices went on to set a new program record at the ECAC National Invitational’s as the novice 8 made the Grand Final before the event was canceled as a result of weather, becoming the fi rst UCSD crew ever to have made it to a Grand Final on a national stage.

Johnson, prior to joining UC San Diego, was the head coach at San Diego State University from 2000-2004. During his tenor, SDSU became a highly competitive crew, winning or medaling in numerous Conference Championships. Johnson’s SDSU crews qualifi ed in the Varsity 4 for the IRA National Championships in 3 of his 5 years as head coach.

Johnson began his rowing career at the early age of 9 and has rowed competitively at every level from Junior to Elite. Although most of his 20 year competitive career focused on sculling events, Johnson won a total of nine National Championship medals in the Eight, Four, Quad, Double and Single, his last coming in 2005.

Johnson graduated from San Diego State University with a bachelor’s degree in History. He was varsity captain and club president for SDSU Crew from 1995-1998.

Assistant Coach 3rd Season at UCSD Colby College ‘00

Colin Truex is in his third year as novice men’s crew coach for UC San Diego in 2009-10.

Under Truex’s leadership, the novice team put together an impressive 2008-09 campign. After going undefeated at the Pac-10 Challenge, the Tritons pulled out a petite fi nal victory at the San Diego Crew Classic, passing Michigan in the fi nal seconds of the race. The UCSD novice squad earned an invitation to the IRA National Championships and didn’t disappoint, defeating George Washington to fi nish 17th in the nation.

In his fi rst season at UCSD in 2007-08, Truex coached the fi rst novice to a third-place fi nish at the WIRA Conference Championships and a 7th-place fi nish at the ECAC National Invitational in Worcester, Mass. Truex’s second novice eight earned second-place fi nishes at WIRA and the prestigious San Diego

Crew Classic as well as a fi rst-place fi nish at the Newport Invitational.

Truex, born and raised in Wethersfi eld, Conn., began his rowing career as a freshman at Colby College, a small private school located in Waterville, Maine. Over the course of his four year career, Truex spent one year in a champion novice eight and three years in the top varsity eight. His varsity eight won medals at the New England Championships, Head of the Charles and New Hampshire Championships. Truex was also a two-time grand fi nalist at the ECAC Championships and stroked a silver medal-winning open four at the IRA national championships. Truex’s rowing experience expanded internationally when he competed for the University College London while studying abroad his junior year. His rowing career culminated with a trip to the Henley Royal Regatta in Henley, England where his eight competed in the Temple Cup.

Upon graduation in the spring of 2000, Truex took over as the men’s novice coach for the Ohio State Crew Club. In his two years at Ohio State, the novice men’s team raced three competitive eights in the spring and experienced much success winning medals at the SIRA, MACRA, and Big Ten Championships.

From 2002 to 2007 Truex was the fi rst assistant coach for the San Diego State women’s rowing team. Truex’s main responsibilities included developing and coaching the walk-on novice team. Over

those fi ve years his top novice boats won fi rst-place honors at the Newport Autumn Rowing Festival, San Diego Fall Classic, the Parker Cup, the San Diego City Championships, and the WIRA Championships. His top novice eights also earned second-place fi nishes at the Miller Cup and a fourth place fi nish at the prestigious San Diego Crew Classic.

In addition to coaching the novice team Truex also coached the lightweight eight (2003-05), the varsity four (2006) and the JV eight (2006). In two years with Truex the lightweight won back-to-back WIRA Championships and was ranked as high as sixth in the national lightweight rankings. Truex coached the varsity four to a bronze medal fi nish and the JV eight to a gold medal at the 2006 WIRA Championships. The JV eight went undefeated against WIRA conference opponents during the 2006 season.

On top of his coaching responsibilities with the Aztecs Truex also served as the recruiting coordinator and his efforts led to the signing of over 60 high school athletes during his fi ve years.

In Dec. 2007 Truex earned a Masters in Business Administration with a specialization in Management from SDSU. In the business program Truex met his future wife and former Loyola Marymount rower Jenny Griffi n. They were married in June 2008 on Mission Bay and live together in North Park with their lazy dog Sammie.

UC San Diego men’s crew had a record-breaking season in 2009, capturing the Cal Cup at the San Diego Crew Clas-

sic for the second time in three years and having the varsity eight ranked in the top-25 by the US Rowing Collegiate National Polls every week during the season. The Tritons varsity eight and second varsity eight also placed second at the Western Intercolle-giate Rowing Association Championships, while the team fi nished third overall. As a result of their incredible season, the varsity eight earned an invitation to the prestigious Intercollegiate Rowing Association Cham-pionships for the fi rst-time in program histo-ry, joining perennial powerhouses Stanford and Cal as the only California schools ever invited to the IRA Championships.

Starting off 2009 at the UC Irvine/Long Beach State Regatta, the Tritons were challenged not only by LBSU and UCI, but also UC Santa Barbara and the University of San Diego, with USD fi elding possibly the strongest varsity boat in school history. Despite the increased level of competition at the event, UCSD came away with wins by the varsity eight, second varsity eight, novice eight, second novice eight, and a second place showing in the varsity four. The varsity eight fended off USD by just one second after pulling even just past the 1100m mark and battling the Toreros the rest of the way.

Returning to the Pac-10 Challenge for only the second year, the Tritons again were victorious in the majority of races, with the varsity eight, second varsity eight, and nov-ice eight each defeating UCLA in the morn-ing events. The three boats repeated the winning performances against conference power UC Davis in the afternoon. The var-sity eight then provided UCSD’s seventh win in eight races against USC, crossing the fi nish line with a decisive 20 second margin of victory.

UCSD earned a return trip to the Copley Cup after recapturing the Cal Cup at the

San Diego Crew Classic. The varsity eight led the effort, trailing Sacramento State during the fi rst 500 meters before pull-ing even by the halfway point and driving ahead during the third-quarter. The boat continued their dominant season by pulling away for the win with a time of 6:28.18. The second varsity eight and novice squads also continued the overall success of the program with wins in their races.

With the momentum from their Cal Cup victory, the varsity eight and second var-sity eight again repeated as winners dur-ing the Newport Regatta, the fi nal tune-up for the WIRA Championships. The varsity eight fi nished just over two seconds ahead of USD and over seven seconds before UCLA, while the second varsity fi nished over a boat-length ahead of the rest of the fi eld.

Entering the WIRA Championships with the varsity having lost only once all year, by less than a second to Gonzaga, the Tritons had reason to feel confi dent about their fi rst chance to advance to the IRA Na-tional Championships. The goal the team set at the start of the season became a re-ality due to their WIRA performance. While the varsity eight boat again fi nished behind Gonzaga in a photo fi nish with a time of 6:00.3 to 5:59.7 for the Bulldogs, the sec-ond place fi nish was enough to earn a trip to Sacramento for the IRA Champion-ships. The second varsity eight also placed second, while the novice eight and novice lightweight four boats advanced to Grand Finals. The Tritons third-place fi nish came despite entering only fi ve boats.

At the WIRA Championships, seniors Ryan Andre, Jeff Collett, and junior Karam Badran were named to the All-WIRA First Team, while senior Jonathan Lynch earned All-WIRA Second Team recognition. Head coach Zach Johnson, in his fi fth season with UCSD men’s crew and third as head coach, was named Coach of the Year in recognition of his leadership and his team’s outstanding performance.

The fi rst men’s crew team at UC San Diego was established in 1967. Many changes have taken place since that time as the sport has evolved from wooden boats and oars, to high-tech racing shells made of Kevlar, carbon fi ber and Nomex honeycomb. The oars have changed their traditional spoon-like shape and, with the introduction of composite materials, evolved into a hatchet or cleaver shape. UCSD has kept pace with the technology, and remained competitive at the regional and national levels.

This is UCSD Athletics...

• Triton teams have captured 29 National Championships while 37 teams have fi nished as National Runners-Up. 44 others have achieved National Third Place honors. All told, UCSD has won a total of 171 national, regional, and conference championships.

• Individually, 130 Triton student-athletes have captured National Championships and a remarkable 990 student-athletes have been named to All-America teams.

• UCSD student-athletes have excelled academically as well, earning 23 prestigious NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarships and 140 Academic All-America selections. Consistently, over 55 percent of the student-athletes earn a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, placing them on the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll.

• In 2008, UCSD was ranked fi rst in Division II and 20th overall in the National Collegiate Scouting Association Power Rankings, which are based on student-athlete graduation rates, academic strength, and athletic prowess of the university.

• In 2008-09, UCSD posted a Seventh Place Finish out of over 300 schools in the Learfi eld Sports Director’s Cup, an award emblematic of the best overall athletics department in the country. Since moving to the NCAA Division II level in 2000, UCSD has placed in the top seven programs in the country on eight different occasions and fi nished second overall twice.

Earl Edwards accepted the position of Director of Athletics at UC San Diego in March 2000. Since his arrival, the UC San Diego athletics department has been nationally recognized for its academic and athletic achievements on numerous occasions. Under his

guidance, the 23-sport program has made a very successful transition from the NCAA Division III ranks to Division II. In fact, UC San Diego has surpassed all expectations at the D-II level, capturing women’s soccer national championships in both 2000 and 2001.

Since moving to Division II in 2000, UC San Diego has been ranked among the top six programs in the country on seven different occasions. In two of those fi nishes, UCSD was the national runner up. UC San Diego also won four straight California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Commissioners Cup titles in 2005-06, 2006-07, 2007-08, and 2008-09, an award that recognizes the best overall athletics program in the conference. In 2008, UC San Diego was ranked No. 1 in Division II and No. 20 overall in the National Collegiate Scouting Association (NCSA) Collegiate Power Rankings, which comprehensively measures student-athlete graduation rates, academic strength and athletic prowess.

Edwards has served on many regional and national committees and organizations. Currently, he serves on the Executive Council for the CCAA and he served on the Executive Committee of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) from 2003-07. Edwards was the president of the National Association of Athletic Development Directors (NAADD) and has severed on numerous other NCAA committees, including the Division II Management Council, the Division II Championships and Minority Opportunities and Interest, the Walter Byers Scholarship and Committee for Women’s Athletics. He has published several articles in Athletic Management and was featured on the cover of the June 2007 issue. In 2007 he was selected Athletic Director of the Year for the West Region by the NACDA.

A 1972 graduate of East S t roudsbu rg Un i ve rs i t y, Edwards earned a bachelor’s

degree in Physical Education. He then went on to receive his masters in Sports Administration from the University of Massachusetts in 1973. In addition to working as athletics director at East Stroudsburg University and UC San Diego, he has athletics administration experience at the University of Massachusetts, UC Davis, the University of Michigan, and Drexel University.

Two integral parts of the UC San Diego athletics department are the Athletic Performance Program and the Sports Medicine Program, both of which provide a tremendous advantage to all 23 of the UCSD intercollegiate sports.

The Athletic Performance Program is geared toward teaching each student-athlete how to achieve the highest level of athletic development through enhancement of all components of strength and conditioning. Athlete workouts are planned and monitored out by Rob Mamula, UCSD’s Director of Athletic Performance. Mamula brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to Triton athletics and represents the only full-time strength and conditioning coach in the entire CCAA. The Tritons work out in the RIMAC weight room, which is over 12,000 square feet in size and features state of the art equipment. The UCSD Athlete Performance Program is truly designed with the student-athlete’s enhancement in mind. Very few programs at the Division II level have such expertise and fi rst class facilities at the disposal of the student-athlete, helping to further distinguish the Triton Athletics Department as one of the premiere intercollegiate programs in the country.

The UC San Diego Sports Medicine Center is dedicated to the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic-related injuries suffered by Triton student-athletes. Under the supervision of head athletic trainer Kevin Messey MS, ATC, CSCS and his staff, UCSD athletes receive the highest quality medical care and access to an extensive network of physicians and other medical specialists.

The rest of the training room staff is comprised of two full-time ATCs and an average of 10 athletic training students (ATS). The UCSD athletic training room is a clinical site for San Diego State University’s accredited athletic training education program, where some of the athletic training students fulfi ll their clinical experience. Additionally, the UCSD Sports Medicine Center offers a wide variety of options for examination and rehabilitation.

From acupuncture to a group of six highly specialized sports medicine, family practitioners and orthopedic surgeons, the UCSD training room has a multitude of options at your disposal to get you healthy and back on the fi eld of competition in no time.

San Diego Tritons

The University of California, San Diego Department of Athletics is committed to actively participating in the community through a variety of outreach events and services. Student-athletes from 23 sports participate in a wide range of service and outreach programs in and

around the San Diego area.

In 2003-04 the Tritons began the “Team Up!” program. This program assists local elementary schools that do not have a physical education component in their current curriculum. UCSD student-athletes provide healthy physical activity and create an environment for elementary school students that foster positive thinking and team building. The program was run at the Del Mar Heights Elementary School in the morning hours prior to school starting and during the students’ lunch periods during the past two years.

Triton student-athletes make the holidays brighter for 12 families in the San Diego area on an annual basis, providing a plethora of gifts and holiday cheer. Triton teams paired up and each tandem purchased presents, food, and goodies to deliver to their adopted family before the holidays. Families were selected by the Neighborhood House Association which runs the Head Start programs throughout San Diego County. Student-athletes contacted the families to fi nd out what special presents the children wanted, as well as what sort of clothing or other needs could be met. Teams delivered the presents in person and spent time with the families, often playing games with the children. Families each received approximately $300-$500 worth of gifts, depending on the number of children. Presents ranged from

a bike for one child to clothing and food for the parents.

In conjuction with the California Collegiate Athletic Association as the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Triton student-athletes have gone to work to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation in each of the last three years. The student-athletes held a bake sale during the Annual Sun God Festival on the UCSD campus. Each team brought baked goods for a sale in the evening prior to the festival’s main event. The goal at each CCAA member institution was to raise $1 per student-athlete. Triton student-athletes far exceeded this goal, raising over $1,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation in 2005.

Additionally, the Intercollegiate Athletics Department holds an annual Blood Drive to benefi t the American Red Cross. All coaches, staff and out of season student-athletes participated in the blood drive, while those student-athletes who were in season recruited other students on campus to donate blood on their behalf.

The UCSD campus is located in La Jolla, Calif., just minutes north of America’s sixth largest city, San Diego.
