GC SOCCER COMPLEX

WWW.GOLEAFS.NET – 4

Location: Far south end of GC Athletic Complex on southeast side of Goshen College campus.Built: 1950’sCapacity: 1,500-2,000 in grandstandsPlaying Dimensions: 110 yards long, 75 yards wide

On a cold fall night, the noise can be heard over a mile away. Follow the noise and you will find one of the most exciting soccer atmospheres in all of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.

The Goshen College Soccer Complex has a long history of success having seen 19 Mid-Central College Conference Championships on the men’s side and is a consistent host to

conference and regional tournament contests. The consistent on-the-field success of its teams has contributed to and cer-tainly benefited from a wild and boisterous fan base. Standing from whistle to whistle the Maple Leaf faithful make the Goshen College Soccer Complex the most difficult places to play in the MCC. With chants for every situation, the fans keep opponents and officials on their toes. The outstanding atmosphere would never be pos-sible without the design of the complex. One of the few lighted soccer-specific stadiums in all of the NAIA, the GC Soccer Complex is lit by four oversized light standards with 18 high-watt bulbs on each. Completely covered cement dugouts sit directly in front of the 1,500-2,000 seat grandstands. At the top of the grandstand sits the press box that allows room for media, a radio broadcast team, and statistic crews. It also serves as a modest wind-break for the later season contests. Directly to the south and west of the stadium are three separate practice field, making the Goshen College Soccer Complex ideal for hosting multiple teams and events on the same day. Maple Leaf soccer players also have access to the Roman Gingerich Recre-ation-Fitness Center. The $7.3 million state-of-the-art facility was built in 1995 and houses a variety of athletic and fitness-related activities.

Along With Strong Core Of Returners

GOSHEN, Ind. – Goshen College Head Women’s Soccer Coach Thavisith Mounsithiraj knows how to keep things in proper perspective. When recounting the 2008 season, the eighth-season head coach used the words “rewarding” and “meaningful” and while he firmly believes in those concepts, Mounsithiraj also knew that he wanted his team to improve and be more consis-tent. Consistency was a major key a year ago as the Leafs scored 13 goals in the opening six games before finding the net just once through conference play. “We have talked with the team about forgetting the past and really focusing on what can be done this year,” Mounsithiraj explained. “We have outstanding leader-ship and have been able to set realistic expectations as we move forward.” Judging by the outstanding crop of players he brought to Goshen in this re-cruiting class, Mounsithiraj admits he has, “guarded optimism, but is very excited about the possibilities.” Maple Leaf fans should be excited because the 2009 version on the Maple Leafs boasts more speed, technical skill, and depth than any recent Goshen squad. Just over a week into camp, Mounsithiraj continues to be impressed.

“I have had to move things up because the players are ahead of where I expected,” he explained. “There are things I thought we would have to work on, but we have been able to move quickly due to the experience of our veterans and skill of the newcomers.” Starting center back Liz Gunden returns for her junior season and Moun-sithiraj has added two stellar freshman to the defense in Mara Swartzentruber (Al-buquerque, NM) and Kristina Lopienski (Bartlett, Ill.). Senior central midfielder Liz Nafziger often took control of the game in 2008 and will be relied upon for ball control once again this year. Joining Nafziger in the center of the pitch is the strong boot of sophomore Tahnee Delp and the athleticism of newcomers Julia Miller (Chicago, Ill.) and Laurel Woodward (Newton, Kan.). Junior’s Yaneth (Hernandez) Springer, Kat Luginbuhl, and Chelsea Graber will no longer have to bear the full load up front with the additions of local standouts Erin Maddux (Elkhart, Ind.) and Brianne Mault (Goshen, Ind.). Maddux tallied 64 goals in her storied high school career, while Mault racked up 30 points as a senior.

Thavisith Mounsithiraj begins his eighth season as head coach of the women’s soccer program at Goshen College in 2009. Prior to arriving at Goshen, Mounsithiraj was the head girls’ soccer coach at Northridge High School (Middlebury, IN), compiling an overall record of 67-42-5 during his eight-year tenure there. His teams twice won the Northern Lakes Conference Championship (1997 and 1998) and he was named the NLC Coach Of The Year two times, in 1998 and 2000. Mounsithiraj, who graduated from Goshen College in 1992, was a three-year letterwinner in men’s soccer for the Leafs. In addition to holding a NSCAA regional coaching license, Mounsithiraj has served as a coach at the Notre Dame Soccer Camps during summer months. In addition to his undergraduate psychology degree from Goshen in 1992, Mounsithiraj obtained his master’s degree in school counseling from Indiana University in 1998. He is currently employed as a guidance counselor at Northridge High School. He resides with his wife, Jean, and their four children Tyler (12), Annie (nine), Kate (seven) and Molly (five) in Goshen.

Molly Kauffman attended Goshen College from 2002-2006. She played center midfield on the women’s soccer team and served as co-captain her junior and senior seasons. After graduating from Goshen in May 2006, Molly accepted a position at Goshen Middle School as a special education teacher. In 2007 Molly returned to the Goshen College Women’s Soccer program to serve as technical advisor. As assistant coach Molly will contribute to the program in a variety of ways, especially with midfielder play development. “Molly brings a familiarity to our program and has a great working relationship with our girls,” said Thavisith Mounsithiraj, Goshen head coach. “She was a very talented player in her day, and will impart valuable knowledge in her coaching role.”
