Academic ExcellenceStudent Athletes at North ParkOur philosophy clearly identifies and develops high caliber students. We foster an atmosphere of academic excellence that allows our students the chance to pursue a multitude of options after graduation.

In the past year, we have had over 50 Academic All-Conference, numerous Academic All-Region, and one Academic All-American who counted themselves proud to be North Park Viking student athletes.

Our MissionThe mission of North Park, as an intentionally Christian university of the Evangelical Covenant Church, is to prepare students for lives of significance and service through liberal arts, professional, and theological education.

Our vision, building on our core institutional identity — Christian, urban, multicultural — is to fashion a university of uncommon character and enduring excellence where faith and learning meet.

Leadership through ServiceThrough both campus and private organizations, on the local and national level, our student athletes recognize the need to give back to their community and constituencies.

Members of the Vikings’ baseball team and the Student Athlete Advisory Council sponsor “Viking Kids Day”, hosting underprivileged local youth at our home athletic events, as well as providing tutoring and mentorship.

The Student Athlete Advisory Council and the CHAMPS/Lifeskills program nominate Viking athletes for the NCAA National Leadership Conference.

North Park Athletic History

A History of SuccessAt North Park University, our past athletic success is considerable. We choose to honor that tradition actively because we know the roots of our historical achievements help us continue to build a vibrant, diverse, and successful offering of NCAA athletic programs. Our men’s basketball team has gained national attention by being crowned NCAA Division III national champions five times. Only four other NCAA basketball programs in any division have matched that level of success. Our baseball program has won four CCIW titles and has competed in five NCAA National Tournaments. They also have several players holding positions in the NCAA record books for career and single season statistical accomplishments. Football, men’s basketball, and baseball have had over 50 players sign professional contracts after their Viking careers.

A Bright FutureOur present accomplishments are just as considerable. Today, we continue to garner national attention in a num-ber of sports, and we are poised to continue the winning Viking tradition.

Our men’s soccer team won CCIW titles in 2004, 2005, and 2006, competed in the NCAA National Tournament in 2005 and 2006, and was nationally ranked in 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008. They have had 43 All-CCIW players since 1999.

Our women’s rowing team has earned gold, silver, and bronze medals in their first three years of competition at the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta. This feat has been achieved by very few rowing teams.

Our women’s basketball team has won seven tournament championships since 2003.

Our women’s soccer team was named the 18th most-improved team in the nation by the NCAA in 2005.

Our baseball and women’s basketball teams qualified for the CCIW Tournament in 2006, allowing them to compete for an NCAA tournament berth.

Our women’s cross country team had one runner qualify for the NCAA National Championship in 2006.

2009 Vikings Football PreviewAs the 2009 season is set to begin for the North Park football team, Head Coach Scott Pethtel took some time prior to the campaign to talk about the upcoming year for his squad.

Q: With this being your fourth season as the head foot-ball coach, what are your expectations of this year’s team?

I expect the same things this year that I’ve expected out of all our teams; I expect them to be the best people they can be, to go to class, earn a degree and be the best students they can be, develop their athletic ability to the fullest, and compete with great expectation, enthusiasm and effort.

Q: Who are the returning players that will lead the team this season?

On the offensive side, Shelby Wood, Bill Ziemba and Ra-kim Jones are going to contribute in the backfield. I think we’ve got a pretty solid nucleus on the offensive line with Jeff Willard and Evan Gawel, who returns from a knee injury. Ryan Davies, and Josh Startup will give us some experience up front as well. At wide receivers, Sam Lialios and Sam Cochiaro had a big impact on our offense last year, along with Chris Anton. Defensively, Nils Lundgren, a starting linebacker and Rod Ojong return. On the defen-sive line we’re hoping to keep Lance Jones healthy, Fred Flihan is returning and we moved Ismael Alvarez from the offensive line to the defensive line. Joe Orsini will contrib-ute as will Jose Palma. In the secondary, Joe Cullotta’s coming back for his senior season and Nick Pantaleo and Steve McKiernan will add some great experience. At punter we have Kevin Hart returning for his senior season and we are looking for some big things from him.

Q: What are your expectations of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin?

This is the toughest conference top to bottom, that I can think of, in the country. You’ve got the Ohio Athletic Confer-ence and the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, both extremely good conferences, with very good teams in them, but I’m not sure if they have as many top-notch teams as the CCIW. However they’re playing for the nation-al championship every year so that says something about them. In our conference, I expect good things out of North Central and Wheaton, but the sleeping giant is Augustana this year. Anything can happen when you get in the heat of the season. You’ve got good talent at Carthage and Illinois

Wesleyan has a lot of guys coming back, plus they took an overseas trip this spring so they gained valuable expe-rience with that trip. Millikin always has good talent and Elmhurst has come on strong, so it’s hard to predict because it’s such a rough and tumble con-ference week-to-week. Anything can happen.Q: What do you think will have the biggest impact on this year’s team?

We’ve got more numbers and our overall size has im-proved. We’re a year older, we’ve got more guys that have played, have been in the weight room longer and look physically ready to play in this league. We’ve picked up some size in our recruiting class and a lot of real quality athletes.Q: What will the quarterback position look like this season?

Shelby Wood is our guy, but there are others that are hot on Shelby’s heels. Randy Ratajczyk and Chris Rober-son have been practicing very well as has Evan Rhoads. Donte Givan is also a talented athlete, so we’ve got a number of quarterbacks that we feel good about. They each have their strengths, and we’re going to try and play off those strengths.

Q: Losing All-CCIW running back Jacob Mueller to graduation is tough, but who do you see filling the role at running back in 2009?

Rakim Jones is talented, but he’s in a different category than Jacob with his style of running. Jacob was a work-horse, hard-hitting running back where Rakim is different. He’s more speed-oriented and a slashing kind of runner. He’s got enough speed that he could be a breakaway

threat when gets in the open.

2009 Vikings Football PreviewQ: What more can you say about the talent returning at wide receiver with both Cochiaro and Lialios?

They’re both solid receivers and are very competitive. They’ve continued to practice well. Their speed has improved and their size has improved. They’re catch-ing the ball well and I’m really look-ing forward to seeing how that affects our opponents’ defenses.

Q: How will the tight end position shape up this sea-son?

We’ve got Alan Hall and Billy Goodale as our returning guys. Evan Pipes, who’s done a great job in the weight

room, also is returning. Aaron Mead, who came to NPU as a bas-ketball player, switched to football, is a big guy at 6-foot-4, 230

pounds or so. We also have a freshman by the name of Mike Soderlund, who is young, but talented and we’re expecting good things out of him.

Q: What aspects of the defense do you think will help in the team’s success?

The size that we have up front is better than we’ve had in past years. I believe we’ve got strength up front so we’ll be a better team against the run. We’ve got some guys in the secondary that’ll help us defend the pass and our physi-cal presence has improved, which will help us in the game overall.

Q: What will be the key to the linebackers’ success?

Right now Rod Ojong and Nils Lundgren are the top returners, but we have a really talented group and good depth at linebacker. If you go right down the list you can talk about Casey Smagala, Ramon Lacey, who’s a senior, and Austin Shafer. We’ve got a lot of guys at linebacker and a few who have transferred in that’ll make an impact as well as some freshmen that are talented guys.

Q: How will things come together for the defensive line?

Fourth-year players Lance Jones and Jose Palma and sopho-more Fred Flihan and junior Ismael Alvarez are our top four right now. Close behind them we have Joe Orsini, Herbert Obah, Chris Mullen and Joe Battaglia. We’ve added to that a group of solid freshmen and transfers. We’ve got a transfer by the name of Vince Bendotti, who I think is a really talented kid. We’ve got some depth where we haven’t had it before, which I hope will allow us to play harder and rotate some people. Instead of wearing one guy out we can move some guys around.

Q: What will be the strengths of the defensive back-field?

We’re not as deep at the secondary positions. Our start-ers are going to be Nick Pantaleo, Joe Cullotta, Steve Brusky, Anders Nygaard and Steve McKiernan. Calvin Gant is a newcomer that has shown some promise. We moved Jake Chvatal from wide receiver to defensive back and we think he’s going to be a real promising player there. We also have freshmen Andrew Saltzman, Jordan Bevilacqua, Kendahl Anchetta and Aaron Montgomery who we feel can be really good players. There’s a number

of young guys that are learn-ing the game and they’ll be able to help us.

Q: How will special teams shape up this year?

Kevin Hart is our returning punter, but Mark Howard is a punter who should do well for us also. For the first time since I have been here we have some quality place kickers in new guys Anthony Kebede and Bryn Nottoli. I think they will really help us this year.
