2009 Pepperdine Cross Country2

SeaSON OuTLOOk

The 30 brothers and sisters that comprise the Pepperdine cross country teams started their season Sept. 1, following close to three weeks of intense training under fourth-year head coach Robert Radnoti. The Waves’ first competition, the Malibu Oceanside Open, was held that night and was a surprising success as the women’s team defeated Cal State Bakersfield 21-38 and the men’s team beat a squad comprised of alumni and unattached competitors.

Even though there are only two blood relatives between the squads — brothers Conrad and Jordan Wozniak (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge HS) — Radnoti detects a true brother and sisterhood between all his student-athletes, which includes 12 men, 18 women and two former competitors turned assistants in Cole Feldman and Chris Ogle.

Feldman, a second-year law student and one of the veteran leaders of last year’s team, has strengthened the brotherhood by engaging the men’s roster in a number of team-building activities such as kickball, whiffleball and watching a number of movies including Prefontaine. The men also have made trips to Magic Mountain, Malibu Yogurt and, of course, the beach. Meanwhile the ladies’ team has already gone camping up the coast in San Luis Obispo.

While there’s been a lot of fun and games prior to the start of classes, Radnoti is convinced they’re just as serious about their academic and athletic endeavors as they are about socializing.

“They’re all great kids and the highest quality of student-athletes,” he said. “They’re motivated to do well athletically and academically while making sure to integrate several newcomers, and so far it’s gone quite well. The leadership groups have been very creative in developing team-building activities and I’m seeing them grow and mature as individuals as a result.”

The teams are currently nearing the end of their hill-training phase and grueling two-a-day practice sessions. The preseason schedule has included daily morning runs that begin around 6 a.m. in addition to an afternoon jaunt that is preceded by either water workouts or a Pilates class.

According to Radnoti, the Waves are certainly getting in their maximum mileage for the week.

“The West Coast Conference Championship is the only race that matters so we’re focused on training that allows us to produce peak performances at the end of year,” he said. “We also want to improve our times on two of the courses we ran at last year — Irvine and Santa Clara — and further develop the team’s mental outlook.

“My goal each year is to continue building on our culture of improvement while initiating projects that are consistent with Pepperdine’s mission of service and leadership.”

The women’s team is led by two All-WCC preseason team selections, junior Chelsea Wishard (Lawai, Hawai’i/Kauai HS) and sophomore Lauren Lodge (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton HS), who regularly finished first and second for the Waves through 10 competitions last season.

Wishard led the Waves to the finish line at every race and finished third overall at the conference championship in Belmont, Calif., (22:07) which was Pepperdine’s highest individual finish since Rebecca Freebury won the WCC title in 1999. Lodge, the runner-up to Wishard on six occasions, stepped it up a notch during the outdoor track season and set varsity records in the 1500 (4:39.68), 3K (10:05.44), steeplechase (9:45.37) and distance medley relay (12:49.93).

“I’m thrilled to boast about both Chelsea and Lauren,” Radnoti said. “I thought it was great they were named to the All-WCC preseason team — and rightfully so. Chelsea is a grinder. She knows how to come from behind while running at an even pace, but somehow ends up near the front of the pack by the very end.

“Lolo has more of a ‘go get ‘em’ approach where she just sticks with the leaders for as long as she can. She really blossomed during the track season with her great speed and I expect she’ll improve by leaps and bounds.”

Behind Lodge and Wishard, Elizabeth Coe (Fountain Valley, Calif./Fountain Valley HS) has been tagged as the team’s No. 3 runner, while a talented group of sophomores including Hannah DeWalt (Gig Harbor, Wash./Gig Harbor HS), Aneasha Lawrence (Sun Valley, Calif./Village Christian HS), Paige Mobley (Murrieta, Calif./Murrieta Valley HS), Ana Prim (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) and Courtney Rolando (Longmont, Colo./Silver Creek HS) should all be vying for the No. 4 to 7 spots along with three choice newcomers in freshman Megan Doeding (La Crescenta, Calif./Crescenta Valley HS), sophomore Danielle Varela (Hesperia, Calif./Sultana HS) and junior Katherine Schmidt (Auburn, Calif./Saint Francis HS).

Coe regularly finished in the No. 3 through No. 5 range for the Waves last season, topping out at the WCC Championships with a 6K time of 23:39. She also finished fourth for Pepperdine at the NCAA West Regional — another 6K course — in 22:28. Coe had an outstanding high school career but Radnoti said he needs to tweak her collegiate training in order to get her up there with Chelsea and Lauren.

Radnoti is welcoming seven newcomers to the women’s side with Doeding, Varela and Schmidt serving as three of the biggest surprises during preseason training.

Schmidt is an elite A-circuit competitor when it comes to equestrian and horsemanship but is brand new to competitive running. Her inexperience, however, has not kept her at the back of the pack.

“Katherine was right up there with Lolo (Lodge) on the very first day of practice,” Radnoti said. “She is a true newbie to this sport with no running background but just loves to run. After asking me to be part of the team, I agreed and gave her the summer workouts which she followed exactly.”

Doeding also has been keeping up with Lodge during the hill workouts.

Varela is three years removed from her high school days at Sultana where she won the 2002 CIF Individual Southern Section Championship at Mt. SAC with a time of 17:40 and guided the school to a pair of state titles in 2002 and 2003. Her school also finished with a No. 3 national ranking in 2002.

The brother and sisterhoods of the Pepperdine cross teams continue to grow under the leadership of fourth-year head coach Robert Radnoti.

SeaSON OuTLOOk“Danielle spent the last few years at Concordia University so I need to help her get back in the right shape and condition like she was at Sultana,” Radnoti said. “She has good upside and liked what the school had to offer on an official visit.”

Like Varela, both Prim and Mobley come from strong high school backgrounds but are working to find the one extra piece that can push them over the top and into the elite group. Mobley rattled off a number of top-five Pepperdine showings last year as a freshman, including fifth at WCCs, but Radnoti needs her to develop some more speed. Prim is running strong in preseason and has the potential to be one of the Waves’ top seven competitors if she can stay healthy.

As for DeWalt, one of the team’s captains and spiritual leaders, Radnoti said she has the speed and the heart but has to work on her endurance, which he believes should propel her right up to the top three spots.

Lawrence and Rolando have both been training very hard this summer and have come back much improved due to their offseason regimens. Lawrence ran a ton of races in the 800 during the track season while Rolando tackled the high-altitude treks of her native of Colorado. Radnoti is counting on both of these young ladies to be key contributors.

Pepperdine’s men’s team returns its top three returning finishers from the 2008 WCCs in juniors Seth Allison (Canyon, Texas/Canyon HS), Conrad Wozniak and Henri Floris (Chino Hills, Calif./Ayala HS), and with two greatly improved sophomores in Jordan Wozniak and Kenny Smith (Willits, Calif./Willits HS) returning to the fold, the Waves could easily produce a stronger campaign in 2009.

Jordan Wozniak’s improvement started at the end of last year’s cross country season and continued through the track and field season where he displayed great speed in the 800-meter run that Radnoti said no one anticipated.

“Even though he was a distance runner in high school, he really thrived in the move down to the 800, growing more confidence,” he said. “Our goal this year for him is to work on his endurance, but over the summer, he kept up with Conrad and the rest of the top group. He’s now breaking out of his big brother’s shadow and has a bit more speed.”

Smith was Pepperdine’s best all-around freshman runner in 2008, finishing among the top-five Wave runners at four competitions. His best 8K time of the year was a 26:16 posted at the Bronco Invitational at Santa Clara, which was the second to last competition of the year.

During the 2009 track season, Smith competed in the steeplechase and ended up posting the season’s best time of 9:45.37 at the Johnson/Joyner Kersee Invitational.

“I think his competing in the steeplechase has allowed him to make a smooth transition into this summer’s cross country training,” Radnoti said. “Kenny’s come back in great shape. He’s taller and stronger and we expect him to blossom as a sophomore.”

Guys like Allison, Conrad Wozniak and Floris along with Eric Magana (Whittier, Calif./La Serna HS) and Garrett Reim (Fircrest, Wash./Curtis HS) all came in with Radnoti three seasons ago and he’s excited to see them become stronger leaders as they approach their junior or senior years.

Reim, a transfer from a few seasons ago from Willamette University, is the team’s lone senior who is as intelligent and studious about his running as he is for his academics. Radnoti notes Reim’s blessed with great speed and is developing a custom program that will make sure the senior produces stronger showings in an 8 or 10K race.

Conrad Wozniak entered last season as the favorite to lead the men’s team but was forced to deal with some illness and nagging injuries. As a result, he appeared in just half of the 10 competitions, but fared well for the team at the WCC and NCAA West Regional Championships.

“Conrad’s very proactive and good about taking care of his body,” Radnoti said. “Young runners need to listen to their bodies and share whatever is going on with their coach, who can then develop a customized program to reach their best at WCCs.”

Allison, the Wave’s No. 1 finisher at WCCs, has his attention spread in three directions — student, athlete and entertainer. The junior was healthy all of last season between the cross country and track seasons and led Pepperdine to the finish line on two occasions, and five times was its No. 2 competitor. And when he wasn’t competing in a Waves’ uniform, Allison could be found at children parties dressed either as Nemo, G.I. Joe or a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle.

“Seth is our future actor and star in the making,” Radnoti said. “He’s very active as an entertainer whether it’s doing walk-on roles for Entourage or Desperate Housewives, writing plays, directing movies or developing clips for YouTube. Being an actor is his focus, but he had a good summer of running out here in California and has a good mileage base. He really has a driven personality and that’s what I like to see in all our athletes. He’s active, involved, creative and pursues life to its fullest.”

Radnoti has brought in three freshmen — Wesley Blundell (Brush Prairie, Wash./Prairie HS), Sean King (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill HS) and Jon Rahaeuser (Irvine, Calif./Calvary Chapel HS) — and has been impressed by what he’s seen so far from them in training camp.

“All three are dedicated to running and there have been no complaints,” he said. “They all go about their tasks in a workmanlike fashion and are all good academically.”

Blundell is a diligent student-athlete from Washington and a dedicated runner. He took several advanced placement courses during his high school years, which will allow him to graduate from Pepperdine in three years.

King ran the mile and half mile in high school and has really pushed himself hard to make cross country his focus.

“It’s been a major challenge for him to push his body to become a cross country runner, but I know he’ll be great for us during the track season,” Radnoti said.

Radnoti expects Rahaeuser to have a smooth transition from Calvary Chapel High School to Pepperdine in terms of academics and atmosphere, but is still getting adjusted to being part of the brotherhood.

“Jon did lots on his own with his previous programs and teams, so he’s feeling good to be on this team and part of the brotherhood,” Radnoti said. “I’m excited to see how far his talents can go.”

HeaD COaCH ROBeRT RaDNOTI

Robert Radnoti is in his fourth season as head coach of the Pepperdine men’s and women’s cross country and track and field teams, continuing his mission of leading these programs to national prominence. Radnoti joined the Pepperdine program as an assistant in January 2006 and brings a wealth of expertise, innovative ideas and abundant enthusiasm to the program. “This is really a dream come true for me,” Radnoti said, “To be able to step into a head coaching position at a Division I university is something I have always wanted to do. There is a strong foundation here at Pepperdine and I feel like the program is moving in the right direction to become one of the premier running programs in the nation. We have a great group of athletes coming in this season, lots of excitement with prospective student-athletes and I am confident both the cross country and track teams will continue to show growth and improvement.” Radnoti’s women’s cross country team, with its positive combination of youth and experience, put forth solid efforts at every 2008 regular season meet. The Waves opened their season with a narrow six-point loss to Loyola Marymount, but rebounded quickly with top-five showings at heavily populated meets at UC Irvine (5th) and Hawai’i (3rd), and later finished as the runner-up to USC at Pepperdine’s Alumni Park. Sophomore Chelsea Wishard was Radnoti’s star pupil in 2008 as she led Pepperdine every step of the way and finished as the Waves’ No. 1 runner at each of their six meets. Her fastest 6K time of 21:39.22 at the Pepperdine Invitational was over two minutes faster than her mark at last year’s WCC Championship (23:52) and about 28 seconds better than her other 6K mark recorded last September at Stanford (22:08). Radnoti also got a lot out of his freshmen class, which was represented by Elizabeth Coe, Lauren Lodge, Paige Mobley and Courtney Rolando at the 2008 WCC Championships. Lodge continually battled Wishard for the Waves’ top spot and never finished lower than Pepperdine’s No. 3 runner as a result. Coe also had a very consistent approach and was often the Waves’ No. 3 or 4 competitor. The men’s cross country team began its season with 15 participants, 53 percent of whom

had never run a collegiate race — let alone an 8K — before the fall of 2008. But in spite of this high level of inexperience, Radnoti flourished in building up the team dynamic while getting the best out of several individuals, including sophomore Seth Allison and grad student transfer Cole Feldman. Allison ended the 2007 season with a seventh-place Pepperdine finish at WCCs (27:48), but started 2008 with a third-place mark of 16 minutes on the three-mile course against Loyola Marymount. Afterwards, Allison rattled off four straight second-place Pepperdine finishes at UC Irvine, Hawai’i, Stanford and Alumni Park prior to taking fourth at Santa Clara. Feldman missed two meets due to his Law School commitments, but Radnoti helped push him to the finish line as the Waves’ No. 1 runner at Hawai’i and Pepperdine Invites, where he also placed among the top 20. Feldman was 13th overall at Hawai’i, completing their 5K in 16:03.57 and took 17th at Alumni Park with an 8K time of 26:08.70. The former Drake Bulldog’s best 8K of the season, a mark of 25:35, was recorded at Santa Clara’s Bronco Invitational. Radnoti’s women’s cross country teams finished fifth at the WCC Championships in each of his first two seasons, but slipped to sixth in 2008. The men placed sixth in 2006 before moving up to fifth in 2007 and again in 2008. During the 2009 track and field season, Radnoti’s student-athletes broke 19 varsity records and five Pepperdine/Stotsenberg Track records out of 25 men’s and women’s events. All seven relay records were rewritten as well as the field marks in the shot put and discus by sophomore Aneka Myles. On the track, Lodge led all Waves with three new individual school records established in the 1,500-meter run (4:39.68), 3K (10:05.44) and steeplechase (10:54.93), while Brieanna Carroll left as Pepperdine’s leader in the 5K (17:59.34) and 10K (37:36.08). Conrad Wozniak broke one of three varsity records on the men’s side, clocking a time of 8:41.02 in the 3K at UC Santa Barbara. Pepperdine’s sprinters also put forth a solid effort. Amanda Ajdari broke the school’s record in the 200-meter dash with her time of 25.56 and Bridgette Walker is Pepperdine’s all-time fastest runner in the 400 with her mark of 58.03. Radnoti began as an assistant women’s track coach in the program’s first season of 2006, and would later become the full-time head coach in 2007. In 2008, Radnoti brought back men’s track to Pepperdine after a long absence. A well-respected coach in Southern California, Radnoti was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the California Coaches Alliance. He speaks at various clinics and high schools throughout the country. Prior to joining the Pepperdine staff, Radnoti enjoyed great success at Thousand Oaks High School. His track and field teams compiled a 209-12 overall record, while the cross country teams finished with

a 416-17 mark in the tough Marmonte League in Ventura County. The high point of Radnoti’s tenure at Thousand Oaks came in 2005 when he led the girls’ cross country team to the California Division I state championship — the first-ever for the Thousand Oaks girls’ team. In addition to his coaching responsibilities, Radnoti was active in fundraising and oversaw the construction of a new all-weather track. Thousand Oaks High School has produced numerous national record-holders and has an impressive group of alumni that includes Olympic gold medalist Marion Jones. Before entering the high school coaching ranks, Radnoti served as founder and Chairman of the Board of the United States Corporate Athletic Association [USCAA]. Radnoti created the USCAA FitNews magazine, produced two nationally syndicated televised programs of the USCAA Championships (1991-92) and was the event director of the national championships in 1985, 1986, 1991, 1992 and 1998, where he negotiated the involvement of Carl Lewis, Edwin Moses and Anthony Kennedy Shriver. A serious student of cross country and track and field, Radnoti has achieved his USATF Level II coaching certification. A native of Las Vegas, Nevada, Radnoti attended Greeley West High in Greeley, Colo., where he enjoyed a standout career. Radnoti held school records in all the distance races, the 880, mile and two mile. He finished as runner-up in the 1975 state cross country championships. Radnoti attended the University of Colorado, one of the premier distance-running programs in the nation, and enjoyed an outstanding four-year career. While a member of the Buffaloes, Radnoti qualified for and competed in two NCAA cross country championship events. After graduating with honors while earning a degree in chemical engineering, Radnoti moved to California, where he began a career as a chemical engineer at Exxon. While there, he formed and coached a professional corporate track and field team for 17 years before assuming the head coaching position at Thousand Oaks High in 1998. He also completed his MBA at UCLA while working full-time at Exxon. Radnoti resides in Malibu. He has two children, Kristina and Tom. Kristina graduated last year from Naropa University in Boulder, Colo. with a bachelor’s degree in contemplative psychology. Tom is a senior at Naropa.

As Robert Radnoti enters his fourth year as head coach of the Pepperdine University cross country and track teams, his strategic plan for the development of the team is progressing.

Borrowing from his past work with Systems Thinking (i.e. Peter Senge’s The Fifth Discipline) in the corporate world, Coach Radnoti has developed his System of Cross Country/Track Excellence.

This system starts with the program mission:

To be the best running program in the nation for high performance student-athletes and committed to the highest standards of academic excellence and Christian values, where students are strengthened for lives of purpose, service, and leadership.

There are 10 elements within Coach Radnoti’s System.

They are:• Leadership (coaches, team captains, leadership and

mentorship opportunities)• Athletes & Recruiting (identifying, tracking,

scholarships, etc.)• Training & Education (plans, locations)• Competitions (selecting great competitions for our

athletes’ development) • Parents & Alumni (connecting with both groups)• Compliance (NCAA rules, Pepperdine policies, team

rules)• Facilities & Events (developing prestigious home

events, upgrading our facilities)• Finance, Fundraising & Publicity (obtaining the funding

needed for our plans)• Merchandise & Equipment (to be able to perform well and represent Pepperdine with class)• Lives of Purpose, Service & Leadership (being aligned with the Pepperdine mission)

Within each element, the system includes the five characteristics of a system: scope and objectives, procedures, responsible and accountable resources, verification and measurement, and a feedback mechanism. Each process is then continually improved by a relentless pursuit of excellence.

Reicheneder

Dale Reicheneder is in his first year as an assistant coach for the men’s and women’s cross country and track teams, following three years of helping Robert Radnoti as a volunteer administrative assistant. Reicheneder previously spent five seasons assisting former head coach Dick Kampmann prior to Radnoti’s tenure.

Reicheneder received his BA and MA degrees from Pepperdine, graduating with honors, and is a recipient of Pepperdine’s top Graduating Student of the Year and Humanities Student of the Year.

Reicheneder also earned his JD from Loyola Marymount and has been a practicing litigation attorney in Los Angeles for approximately 10 years. Reicheneder came to run at Pepperdine following a year in which he won a cross country championship for his high school. While at Pepperdine, Reicheneder won the majority of his races under coaches Kevin Steele and Kampmann, setting course records at approximately six locations. A powerful hill runner, Reicheneder remains Pepperdine’s only undefeated runner on its home course.

Reicheneder also holds the school’s unofficial record in the 1600 meters on Pepperdine’s Stotsenburg Track at 4:16 during a friendly, which pitted him against the nation’s then-top collegiate triathelete.

Reicheneder’s personal records include a mile time of 4:07, a mark of 14:11 in the 5,000-meter run, and a 1:08.50 in the half-marathon. A two-time national trail running champion, Reicheneder has long enjoyed working out and inspiring the team, but following a car accident in August 2007 that injured his back, his running with the team has been limited. He hopes to fully recover this year.

Ogle

Chris Ogle is in the midst of his second year as a volunteer assistant coach for the Pepperdine University cross country and track and field teams. He was named to this position in the summer of 2008 following a successful one-year stint with the Waves’.

As a graduate student with senior eligibility, Ogle was Pepperdine’s top runner on four occasions, including the WCC Championships (10th, 25:39) and NCAA West Regional (96th, 32:34.65). During the track season, Ogle established school records in three events: the 1,500 (3:59.28), the 3,000 (8:45.97) and the 5,000 (14:58.42) and won the steeplechase at the Northridge Relays and the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational.

In his first season as an assistant coach with the Waves’ cross country squads, he helped the men’s team maintain a fifth-place showing at the WCCs for a second-straight year. Sophomore Seth Allison and graduate student Cole Feldman strived under Ogle’s and head coach Robert Radnoti’s leadership as they continually led Pepperdine to the finish line.

Prior to his arrival at Pepperdine, Ogle competed for the University of Arizona where he was a three-time NCAA regional qualifier in the steeplechase. His Wildcat teams finished as high as 10th at cross country nationals and third at the NCAA Track and Field Championships. Voted as Arizona’s Most Inspirational runner, Ogle graduated summa cum laude in the spring of 2007 with a degree in psychology and is currently pursuing his master’s at Pepperdine.

2008 ReSuLTS/WCC HONORS/HISTORYPepperdine

Cross Country History Track and field (along with baseball and basketball) was one of the first three intercollegiate sports sponsored by George Pepperdine College when the school first opened its doors at its South-Central Los Angeles location in 1937. Under the direction of head coach J. Eddie Weems, Pepperdine track and field teams quickly made their mark at local, re-gional and national competitions. For example, at the 1939 Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, the tandem of Froggie Lovvard, Jack Russell, Wally Simpson and Stanley Summers ran the two-mile relay in 7:43.40, a mark which stood for 15 years before it was finally broken. Weems and another former Pepperdine coach, Bert Brewer, are enshrined in the University’s Athletics Hall of Fame along with track and field standouts Terry Bell, Jack Bighead, Roy Burleson, Bill Johnson, Wixie Robinson, Jerome Walters and Don Whitney. In the mid-1960s, Ron Pettigrew and Harry Skandera were both All-American cross country runners for Pepperdine, and they are also a part of the University’s Ath-letics Hall of Fame. Although women’s intercollegiate ath-letics teams were not sponsored prior to the 1970s, female athletes from various schools still competed at local meets. Pepperdine standouts such as Terrezene Brown, Vilma Charlton and Marilyn White each competed at the Olympic Games, and are an important part of the University’s rich athletics heritage. Pepperdine men who competed in track at the Olympics include Walters, Alvis An-drews, David Kirkland and Pablo McNeil. Cross country and track and field were disbanded when the University moved its campus to Malibu in 1972. However, men’s and women’s cross country teams were reinstituted in the mid-1970s. The men’s West Coast Conference Championships date back to 1975, while the women began in 1985. Pepperdine’s women finished second at the WCC Championships in 1988, 1993 and 1999. The men’s team earned a best-ever third-place finish at the 1997 WCC Championships. Individually, Pepperdine women’s run-ners have won the WCC race three times. In 1988, Kari Baerg won the 2.98-mile event at the Crystal Springs course, lo-cated in Belmont, Calif., in a time of 18:31. The following year, Kim McElhinney dupli-cated that accomplishment, posting a time of 18:49 in a five-kilometer run at Crystal Springs. In 2000, Rebecca Freebury won the five-kilometer event in a time of 18:18. Jason Kite posted the best-ever indi-vidual finish for the men in 1993 when he placed fifth, posting a time of 26:09 in an eight-kilometer run at the Crystal Springs course. Track made its debut on the Malibu campus when a women’s team was es-tablished for the first time in 2006, and the men’s team was reinstated in 2008.

“What We hope to build is much more than a beautiful campus. it Will, as you can sense, be that. but if that is all We shall have accomplished, We shall have failed. What We hope to create here, in these hills, is a spirit of place. a place Where minds Will be opened, Where lives Will be changed, Where lasting relationships Will be formed.”

PEPPERDINE• Malibu is located right alongside the Pacific Ocean, just about 30 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles. Pepperdine’s picturesque campus is just a few hundred yards up the hill from Malibu Beach. The Malibu area, as well as all of Southern California, offers tremendous recreation, sporting and entertainment opportunities.

• Pepperdine’s motto is “Freely ye received, freely give” (Matt. 10:8).

• Pepperdine is an independent, medium-sized Christian institution committed to the highest standards of academic excellence and Christian values.

• Approximately 8,000 students are enrolled in five colleges and schools, including Seaver College, the flagship undergraduate school of liberal arts and sciences. A bachelor’s degree is available in nearly 40 areas of study.

• Pepperdine was ranked number 56 by the U.S. News and World Report’s list of America’s best colleges in 2009 (and is the only West Coast Conference school in the top 100).

• Pepperdine was awarded the title of “Most Beautiful Campus” by the Princeton Review in 2005.

• The student-to-faculty ratio is 13:1.

Page 25: 2009 Pepperdine Cross Country Yearbook

UNIVERSITY• Students and alumni consistently cite the quality, accessibility and caring nature of the faculty and staff as among Pepperdine’s major strengths.

• There are 395 full-time teaching faculty, and 98% of full-time faculty have earned doctoral degrees. Students are provided with experiential opportunities, including research projects and internships so that their knowledge can be put to practice.

• 75% of Pepperdine undergraduates receive some form of financial assistance.

• Pepperdine University is respected both nationally and internationally. Students come to Pepperdine from all 50 states and more than 70 countries worldwide. Additionally, nearly 60% of Pepperdine’s undergraduate students study abroad at one point within one more than 20 international programs.

• Pepperdine was recently voted as having the seventh-best study-abroad program in the nation by the Institute of International Education. Study-abroad programs include Heidelberg, Germany; London, England; Florence, Italy; Buenos Aires, Argentina; Lausanne, Switzerland; and Shanghai, China.

• Among the 38 different majors offered, the top five at Seaver College are business administration, advertising, international studies, international business, psychology and political science.

• The University was founded in 1937 by George Pepperdine, a Christian businessman who established the Western Auto Supply Company.

ATHLETIC Pepperdine is classified as an NCAA Division I-AAA school (Division I schools that do not sponsor football), and the Waves are one of the very best of their kind. Since the I-AAA Athletic Director’s Association All-Sports Trophy was established, ranking the various schools on their postseason success, Pepperdine has finished in the top six every single time, including in first place twice (2004-05 and 2005-06).

In the annual NACDA Director’s Cup standings, which measures overall postseason success, Pepperdine has finished first among all of its West Coast Conference rivals for 13 straight years.

BaseballThe 1992 College World Series champions, Pepperdine baseball has recorded a remarkable 32 straight 30-win seasons. The Waves have advanced to the NCAA Championships 25 times, including five times under head coach Steve Rodriguez. Pepperdine has captured 17 regular-season WCC crowns and four WCC Championship Series titles. Twenty-nine alums have gone on to success in Major League Baseball.

Men’s BasketballOver the years, the Pepperdine men’s basketball program has made 13 NCAA Tournament appearances, captured at least a share of 16 conference titles, won three West Coast Conference Tournament titles and sent dozens of players into professional basketball. Head coach Tom Asbury was one of the top coaches in the WCC’s history from 1989-94 and he has returned to Malibu to help the program thrive once again.

Women’s BasketballWith seven postseason appearances in the last 11 seasons, the Pepperdine women’s basketball team has developed into a consistent winner and a contender in the West Coast Conference. The Waves made their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance in 2000 with an at-large bid, then captured the WCC Tournament title and subsequent NCAA appearances in 2002, 2003 and 2006, the most recent coming under head coach Julie Rousseau.

Cross Country / TrackHead coach Robert Radnoti has the goal of national prominence for his cross country and track programs. The Waves were extremely strong in these sports at their South-Central campus from the 1930s to the 1960s, with All-Americans and Olympians to their credit. However, the programs were dropped briefly when the university moved its campus to Malibu. The Waves have made great strides in cross country over the years and track was added again in the past few years.

Women’s SoccerOne of the youngest programs on Pepperdine’s campus, the women’s soccer team has quickly developed into among the strongest in recent years. Since its inaugural season in 1993, the Waves have posted 10-win seasons 10 times and made the NCAA Tournament five straight years from 2001-05. Head coach Tim Ward has helped his Waves reach the NCAA’s Sweet 16 on two occasions.

SUCCESS

Men’s GolfThe 1997 NCAA men’s golf champions and a regular at the top of the West Coast Conference’s leaderboard, Pepperdine competes with the nation’s best. The Waves have won 16 WCC titles since 1987 and have 11 straight NCAA regional appearances. Pepperdine won the NCAA title in John Geiberger’s first season and have posted two other top 10 national finishes.

Women’s GolfIn the last 16 seasons since Laurie Gibbs became head coach, the Pepperdine women’s golf program has developed into a national championship contender. The Waves have won 11 WCC titles, been to 11 straight NCAA Regional tournaments and have made nine NCAA Championships appearances. The Waves finished second in the nation in 2003 and boast four top-five finishes.

Women’s Swimming & DivingFor more than 20 years, Pepperdine has thrived in the Pacific Collegiate Swimming & Diving Conference. The Waves have had nine consecutive top-five finishes under head coach Nick Rodionoff, including a program-best-tying second-place finish in 2008. Ten of Pepperdine’s 20 record times have come under Rodionoff’s watch.

Men’s TennisNo team has been more consistent then Pepperdine’s men’s tennis program, which wins the West Coast Conference title and makes the NCAA Tournament with amazing regularity. The Waves have won 40 WCC titles, including 19 in a row. Led by head coach Adam Steinberg, the Waves reached the pinnacle in 2006 and won the national championship.

Women’s TennisNo coach has been on staff at Pepperdine for more consecutive years than Gualberto Escudero, who took over as women’s tennis head coach in 1977-78. His tenure has featured WCC titles (21, including seven in a row), NCAA Tournament appearances (26, with 12 in a row) and top 25 finishes (including eight times in the nation’s top 10).

Men’s VolleyballPepperdine’s most successful program has won five NCAA men’s volleyball championships, second-most of any school, with the last title coming in 2005. The program is synonymous with head coach Marv Dunphy, who was responsible for four of the titles and has also had a long association with USA Volleyball. Pepperdine has made the NCAA Championships event on 15 occasions, including six times in the past decade.

Women’s VolleyballFor most of its history, the Pepperdine women’s volleyball program has boasted one of the nation’s top coaches in Nina Matthies, who took over in 1983. Since the West Coast Conference added women’s volleyball, the Waves have been the league’s dominant program with 10 titles. Since 1981, the Waves have made 20 trips to the NCAA Championships, including 11 in the last 12 years.

Men’s Water PoloPepperdine was the host site of the 1984 Olympic water polo competition, so it should be no surprise that the Waves excel in the sport. Pepperdine has advanced to the NCAA Championships 12 times in its history and captured the national crown in 1997. Current coach Jack Kocur was a player on that title team. The Waves have won at least a share of conference titles nine times and have finished in the top 10 in the national rankings every year since 1976.

The Pepperdine University Athletics Department is committed to a program of life skills that provides educational experiences and services in order to develop well-balanced life styles for student-athletes; to encourage growth in decision making, planning and fulfillment of career and life goals; and to enhance the quality of the student-athlete experience within the university setting.

The program is required for every incoming freshman and transfer student-athlete. Nationally recognized speakers and a life skills class are part of the program. Topics are chosen to support the following commitment purpose statements:

• Commitment to Academic Excellence — To support the academic progress of the student-athlete toward intellectual development and graduation.

• Commitment to Athletics Excellence — To build philosophical foundations for the development of athletics programs that are broad-based, equitable and dedicated to the well-being of the student athlete.

Pepperdine University’s goal is to “strengthen lives for purpose, service and leadership” and the Pepperdine Athletics Department is a strong believer in helping its student-athletes to meet this goal. The school’s athletic teams embrace the concept of volunteerism and service to the community. Teams are regularly taking on projects that will better the lives of others.

Step Forward is an annual day held each fall that is devoted to community service, when more than a thousand Pepperdine students, staff, faculty and alumni will disperse throughout Southern California in order to lend a hand to those in need. Pepperdine’s athletic teams have been front and center as part of this event, as well as other service opportunities year-round.

COMMUNITY

LIFE SKILLS/SAAC• Commitment to Personal Development — To support the

development of a well-balanced lifestyle for student-athletes, encouraging emotional well-being, personal growth and decision making skills.

• Commitment to Service — To engage the student-athlete in service to his/her campus and surrounding communities.

• Commitment to Career Development — To encourage the student-athlete to develop and pursue career and life goals.

The Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) is comprised of two student leaders from each athletic team at Pepperdine. National SAACs at a glance:

• Generate a student-athlete voice within the NCAA structure.

• Solicit student-athlete response to proposed NCAA legislation.

• Recommend potential NCAA legislation.• Review, react and comment to the governance structure

on legislation, activities and subjects of interest.• Actively participate in the administrative process of

athletics programs and the NCAA.• Promote a positive student-athlete image.

ATHLETICS DEPARTMENTPEPPERDINE ATHLETICS PHILOSOPHYThe Athletics Department supports and endorses the Pepperdine University Mission Statement. At Pepperdine University, student-athletes will be provided with opportunities to achieve goals as stated by the University founder, Mr. George Pepperdine. His original statement of purpose is still the guiding principle of the University: “Therefore, as my contribution to the well-being and happiness of this generation and those that follow, I am endowing this institution to help young men and women prepare themselves for a life of usefulness in this competitive world and to help them build a foundation of Christian character and faith which will survive the storms of life.”

Intercollegiate student-athletes representing Pepperdine University will be bonafide students pursuing degree programs of their choice who enjoy the opportunity to develop their athletics abilities consistent with the high standards of academic scholarship, sportsmanship, leadership and institutional tradition.

Further, it is recognized that the Pepperdine University Athletics Program:

• is an integral part of a total university spectrum involving students, faculty, administrators, staff and patrons.

• should develop character, maturity and a sense of fair play as well as athletics excellence.• should promote pride in the University among students, faculty, staff and community

supporters.• should generate revenue to support, in part, all intercollegiate athletics teams representing

the University.• should abide by the letter and spirit of the law requiring nondiscrimination on the basis of

sex, race, creed or national origin.• must abide by all rules and regulations as set forth by the institution, the governing

conferences and the National Collegiate Athletic Association.

PEPPERDINE ATHLETICS OBJECTIVESAmong the objectives of the Pepperdine University Athletics program are the following:

• to develop an awareness and understanding of the human person, including intellectual, physical, social and spiritual dimensions.

• to encourage scholarship, leadership, sportsmanship, fair play and an appreciation of opponents and amateur athletics.

• to develop teamwork, respect for authority and an appreciation of rules and regulations governing the game.

• to develop an attitude of responsibility to society.• to develop an appreciation for the beauty of physical performance and aesthetic values.• to prepare students for meaningful and satisfying careers.• to help students gain understanding and respect for individuals from other backgrounds and

cultures.• to encourage students to become involved in neighborhood and community service

activities.• to field disciplined and competitive teams seeking superior athletic performance within

established rules and ethical conduct.• to schedule appropriate competition for the athletes and teams.• to have the University’s Athletics Department recognized as an ethical leader and an

example of excellence in management, performance and conduct.• to provide superior facilities for competition, training and teaching.• to seek continual improvement in the system of intercollegiate athletics by reducing

pressures on coaches which might lead to improprieties.• to create a positive, enjoyable and fun home event experience for Pepperdine students,

faculty, staff, alumni and fans.

When the West Coast Conference first got its start back in 1952, the founders really had only one goal in mind — to create a convenient way for five Bay Area schools to play basketball. What has grown from that original vision some 57 years ago is a marvelously cohesive athletics league that is competitive at a national level in 13 sports. The eight current members of the WCC span the western coast of the United States from Canada to Mexico. Though the institutions range from the pine forests of Eastern Washington to the sun-drenched beaches of Southern California, the combined excellence in academics and athletics sets the conference apart on the national scene and draws the individual institutions together in a common mission. The WCC sponsors championships in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, women’s rowing, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s tennis and women’s volleyball. Originally chartered as the California Basketball Association, the five-team league included Pacific, Saint Mary’s, San Francisco, San Jose State and Santa Clara, and the first-ever men’s basketball game was played January 2, 1953. After three seasons of play under that name, the conference expanded to include Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine in 1955, and became known as the West Coast Athletic Conference in 1956. The name was shortened in 1989. The current alignment of Gonzaga University, Loyola Marymount University, Pepperdine University, University of Portland, Saint Mary’s College, University of San Diego, University of San Francisco and Santa Clara University has remained unchanged since 1979, making the WCC the

third-most stable athletic conference in the nation. Only the Ivy League and the Pacific-10 Conference have been together longer. Women’s sports were incorporated into the WCC prior to the 1985-86 season, and the league has made steady improvements in several sports, particularly basketball, soccer and volleyball. Since joining the WCC prior to the 1955-56 season, Pepperdine has claimed 129 WCC regular-season team championships in the following sports: baseball (17), men’s basketball (12), women’s basketball (4), men’s golf (16), women’s golf (11), women’s soccer (1), men’s tennis (40), women’s tennis (21) and women’s volleyball (10). Additionally, the men’s and women’s basketball team have each won the league’s postseason tournament three times. The baseball team has won the WCC Championship Series four times. The league relocated its headquarters in the summer of 1998 to San Bruno near the San Francisco International Airport. The WCC hired Jamie Zaninovich as its commissioner in March 2008.

WCC

MPSF PCSC The Mountain Pacific Sports Federation was established during the 1992-93 academic year to serve the competitive needs of member institutions from the Big West, Pacific-10, Mountain West, Western Athletic and West Coast Conferences and other selected universities in the western United States; and to provide championship competition for Division I intercollegiate Olympic sports in a conference setting. The MPSF was originally formed to provide enhanced competition and championship opportunities for sports without conference affiliation; to contain the costs of competition; and to ensure the survival of sports impacted by Title IX and other fiscal pressures. The Federation has served as an incubator for emerging women’s sports and as a safe harbor for sports impacted by conference realignments. In men’s volleyball, the Waves have won five regular season and four tournament titles. Pepperdine competes against BYU, Cal State Northridge, Hawaii, Long Beach State, Pacific, Stanford, UC Irvine, UCLA, UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara and USC. MPSF schools have won 14 of the 17 NCAA men’s volleyball championships since the conference was created (including one by Pepperdine). In men’s water polo, the Waves have won two regular-season crowns. Pepperdine competes against California, Long Beach State, Pacific, Stanford, UC Irvine, UCLA, UC Santa Barbara and USC. MPSF schools have won all 17 NCAA men’s water polo championships since the conference was created (including one by Pepperdine).

Pepperdine has been a member of the Pacific Collegiate Swimming & Diving Conference for more than 20 years. The PCSC has allowed a number of swimming programs of all shape and size — NCAA Division I, II and III and the NAIA — who are not affiliated with a major conference to come together and participate at a championship meet. The Waves swim against Alaska-Fairbanks, Biola, California Baptist, Cal State East Bay, Chapman, Concordia, Fresno Pacific, Loyola Marymount, Northern Colorado, Seattle, Soka, UC San Diego and UC Santa Cruz. Pepperdine has always been among the top programs in the PCSC and tied its best-ever finish with a second-place showing in 2008.
