    Introductory Remark

    By

    Assoc. Prof. Sophana Srichampa Director

Institute of Language and Culture for Rural Development,

    Mahidol University

Her Excellency Madam Latha Reddy, His Excellency Ambassador of Nepal, Clin. Prof. Piyasakol Sakolsatayadorn, Phra

Bhikkhuni Dhammananda, Swami Shantatmananda, our Indian relatives

in Bangkok, my colleagues and students,

I am glad that the second annual seminar in the series of

Indian Ideas and Thoughts is taking place, and for selecting the

topic on Swami Vivekananda I am personally grateful to Dr Amarjiva

Lochan form Delhi University, India. My new introduction to Swami

Vivekananda and his life has been like a discovery to me. His

contribution to the thoughts of world peace and harmony are very

relevant and in his lucid expression and introduction of Hinduism,

his high reverence to Lord Buddha and Buddhism inspired me a lot.

The method of synctretic co-existence of all religions offered by

Swami Vivekananda requires to be known, learnt and applied by Thai

people, this is the sole purpose of this Seminar.

The two speakers from India and Thailand are authorities on this

subject, and I am grateful to both of them for coming and

contributing the Seminar at a very short notice.

  • Swami Vivekananda 6

I am grateful to Madam Latha Reddy under whose

leadership, the Indian Embassy has been helping not only this

Seminar but all of our activities related to the Masters Degree

program on Indian Studies. I am also thankful to Mr Abhijit

Chakkraverthy, the Indian Counsellor, for his time to time guidance

    and support.

I am also happy that the leading Indian community members

have come to join us for the follow-up interaction about their lives

in Thailand. I am sure, my colleagues, students will benefit from

them for their own individual research and academic work.

    Coordinator introduces the Seminar

    Dr. Amarjiva Lochan

IT IS MY GREAT PLEASURE TO SEE THE FLOWERING

RELATIONS AND GROWTH OF THE India related academic

activities happening at Mahidol. When Dr. Sophana talked to me on

the theme and subject of the 2nd India Seminar, we discussed the

issue of the relevance of Swami Vivekananda. I am glad that she

chose and decided in his favour. I am also feeling grateful to the

kind collaboration of the Indian Embassy in Bangkok. I here must

acknowledge that M.r Abhijit Chakravertty, the hon'ble Counselor,

was very forthright and gave all sorts of advice and support to

holding this seminar on the subject. Swami's relevance is very much

understandable as he pioneered the movement of understanding the

East in a proper and rationale manner. Before this, the East was a

place only to be ruled, ridiculed, and rusticated. But his noble and

fiery speech at Chicago over one hundred years ago rewrote the

concept and made the West understand what the value East has in

its fold. I think, I do not dare speak on the subject when the two

leading personalities are here. I am extremely honoured that Swami

Shantatmananda became gladly available to this Seminar at such a

short notice. His arrival and giving time to us would definitely

enlighten us in many ways as he is a living example of the values of

Swami Vivekananda and his School of thought and philosophy.

Similarly, I am indebted to Luang Mae Bhikkhuni Dhammananda, known around the world as Prof. Chatsumarn Kabilsingh. Having

herself started the life of a student in the Santiniketan, she is

  • Swami Vivekananda 8

very much aware of the role of swami Vivekananda. I am sure, her

speech would present an analysis and application of Swami's

    philosophy in Thai context too.

I am also happy to see the active role of the Hon'ble rector.

Clinical Professor Piyasakol Sakolsatayadorn who always finds time

for us. This is the end of the first year of the MA Indian Studies

here under the able leadership of Sophana. I am therefore

confident that Thai people, students, and teachers would also learn

a lot from the second part of the Day's programme of How Indians

    are Thai Indians?

    Thanking you all once again

  • Swami Vivekananda 9

Welcome speech by the President, Mahidol University,

    Clin. Prof. Piyasakol Sakolsatayadorn

Honourable Indian Ambassador Her Excellency Ms Latha

Reddy, Phra Bhikkhuni Dhamma-nanda, Swami Shantatmananda

from India, distinguished Guests and My colleagues,

It is my big pleasure to join you this morning for the second

Annual Seminar on Indian Ideas and Thoughts. The subject on

Swami Vivekananda, one of the foremost thinkers of last century

is highly relevant. The modern world though being called as a Global

village, has been witnessing surge in the violence, socio-religious

tension and disharmony. This is a phenomenon affecting all of us. At

such crucial juncture, we have to look back to peaceful solution as

offered by our sages, thinkers and philosophers. India has been a

rich source of such personalities form ancient times till now. I have

been told, Swami Vivekananda offered his vision of world peace and

harmony among religions way back in 1893 before a huge gathering

of the World Parliament of Religions at Chicago. He was thus far

ahead not only to visualize such problem but also offer a perfect

solution. We need to learn from his deliberations. Though Swami

attained samadhi at a very young age of 39, his volumes of writing

have changed the course of history of mankind.

I must express my sincere gratitude to Honble Indian

Ambassador Her Excellency Latha Reddy, and the Indian Embassy

to join hands with us. Let me assure you all, this annual feature shall

remain our foremost academic activity at the Institute (ILCRD) of

  • Swami Vivekananda 10

Mahidol under its new umbrella of the study and research on Indian

Studies. I congratulate the organizers for such a wonderful topic

    with high contemporary relevance.

Inaugural Address by Her Excellency Ms Latha Reddy, Honble Ambassador of India to Thailand Swami Vivekananda: A Role Model for

    World Peace & Harmony

Prof. Piyasakol Sakolsatayadorn, President, Maidol University.

Swami Shantatmananda, the Distinguished Speaker from India, (who is

also the Head of Ramakrishna Mission, New Delhi) Bhikkhuni

Dhammanada, the Distinguised Speaker from Thailand, Dr. Sophana

Srichampa, Director, ILCRD, Mahidol University, Distinguished Guests,

Ladies and Gentlemen and dear students,

It is a great privilege and honour for me to be here with you

today and be part of this unique annual Seminar organized by the

Institute of Language and Culture for Rural Development, Mahidol

University, in collaboration with the Embassy of India. Today also

marks the 40th Anniversary of the Royal Bestowment of the name

    to the Mahidol University.

At the outset, I would like to congratulate the Institute for

continuing to take such initiatives which promote understanding

between our two countries at Institutional and people to people

levels. It is all the more appreciable as these Seminars are not a

one-time affair but are done with continuity and hold a permanent

    value.

Relationship between India and Thailand have a glorious

past, be it in the fields of history, culture, religion, economy and

trade or education. The two countries have a splendid record of 62

years of diplomatic relations, which is marked with innumerable

  • Swami Vivekananda 12

milestones. Looking at the future, I am confident that this trend

will increase manifold. The love and affection with which a

prestigious University like yours has organized this event is only a

    manifestation of this trend.

Last year during the same month, the University had

organized the first in the annual seminar series on Indian Ideas and

Thoughts on the topic His Majesty the Kings Sufficiency Economy

Philosophy and Mahatma Gandhis Self-Sufficiency Concept. The

Seminar was also part of the celebrations held to mark the

Centenary Celebration of Gandhijis Satyagraha. The seminar was

very successful and saw participation of more than 350 persons,

including leading Professors from several Universities in Thailand.

Mr. Narayan Desai, the noted Gandhian from India and Professor

Dr. Seri Pongpit, Director, Community Enterprise Institute of

Thailand were the distinguished speakers in that Seminar.

After the success of the last years Seminar, the

Committee of Mahidol University has decided to Institutionalize

the Annual Mahidol Seminar on Indian Ideas and Thoughts,

which the Embassy very much appreciates and acknowledges. These

annual seminars, I foresee, will further nurture the bilateral

relationship between India and Thailand, provide a big leap towards

India-Thailand friendship and simultaneously generate a useful

interaction among academicians, scholars and students. The most

notable feature of these Seminars is that people of all walks of life

may come and join to listen to the thoughts and ideas of experts

    and scholars.

Coming to the theme of todays Seminar Swami Vivekananda: A

Role Model for World Peace and Harmony, I would like to project

an objective assessment of Swamijis contributions in this area.

The impressions made by men of great learning depend almost

  • Swami Vivekananda 13

entirely by their vision and foresightedness and by this yardstick

Swami Vivekananda stands tall and high in the list of such men.

It is truly amazing how Swamijis teachings and ideas are

still all the more relevant, even after passage of more than a century

and when the world is directly face-to-face with the deadly scourges

of terrorism, extremism and fanaticism. The eminent British historian

A.L. Basham stated that In centuries to come, Swami Vivekananda will

be remembered as one of the main moulders of the modern world.

Swami Vivekananda was born on 12 January 1863 in an

aristocratic family of Kolkata, India. His thinking and personality

were greatly influenced by his parents the father by his rational

mind and the mother by her religious temperament. In his early

childhood days itself, he became familiar with Western philosophy

and science and refused to accept anything without rational proof

and pragmatic test. Another part of his mind was draw to the

spiritual ideals of meditation and non-attachment.

From his childhood, he showed strong inclination towards

spirituality, God realization and realizing the highest spiritual

truths. He studied different religious and philosophical systems of

East and the West. In particular, he studied the writings of David

Hume, Herbert Spencer, John Stuart Mill and Charles Darwin and

was also thoroughly acquainted with Indian Sanskrit scriptures. At

the young age of 25, he became a wandering monk and travelled the

length and breadth of India, visiting important centres of learning

and acquainting himself with the diverse religious traditions and

different patterns of social life. All this transformed the young

Vivekananda into a Swami, who respected all religions, beliefs and

ways of life and who gave the idea to the world that the union of

science and religion will bring harmony and peace to the humanity.

  • Swami Vivekananda 14

The message of Swami Vivekananda was the message of

Vedanta a spiritual teaching that again and again saved India

whenever it faced any period of decline and crisis. Its four cardinal

points are non-duality of the Godhead, divinity of the soul, oneness

of existence and harmony of religions. Religion, in the light of

Vedanta, is the manifestation of the divinity already in man and its

central theme is harmony. Vedanta asks a Christian to be a true

Christian, a Hindu a true Hindu, a Buddhist a true Buddhist and a

Moslem a true Moslem. This philosophy harmonized science with

humanism and mystical experience. Swami Vivekanandas ides,

thoughts and their presentation were so strong and entrancing that

during the Parliament of Worlds Religions in Chicago, Professor

John Henry Wright of Harvard University told him, and I quote To

ask you, Swami, for your credentials is like asking the Sun about its

    right to shine.

Swami Vivekananda indicated Vedanta is the future religion

of the mankind. With his prophetic vision, he predicted that modern

science and education would break down the barriers between

nations. He foresaw a new world order in which science and religion

would cooperate, mysticism would combine with humanism an

spiritual harmony would replace religious dissension. His final words

at the Chicago Parliament of Religions were Upon the banner of

every religion will soon be written, in spite of resistance Help and

not fight, Assimilation and not Destruction, Harmony and Peace

    and not Dissension.

At a time when the world peace is suffering from

continuous wars, divisiveness is glorified at the expense of unity

and the human soul is being buried beneath the debris of violence

and hatred, the words of Swami Vivekananda give us assurance an

assurance that we are not living the last days of our destiny and

  • Swami Vivekananda 15

that the light of the Divine, shining in every heart, will triumph over

    the forces of darkness.

Swamijis concept of potential divinity of the soul gives

a new, ennobling concept of man. Through science and technology,

man has attained great prosperity and power and modern methods

of communication and travel have converted human society into

a global village. But, the degradation of man has also been

going on apace, as witnessed by the enormous increase in broken

homes, immorality, violence, crime, etc. in modern society. Swami

Vivekanandas concept of potential divinity of the soul prevents

this degradation, divinizes human relationships and makes

life meaningful. Swamiji has laid the foundation for spiritual

humanism, which is manifesting itself through several neo-

humanistic movements and the current interest in meditation.

And, as I am speaking on this august platform of an

esteemed University like yours, I will like to speak two of Swamijis

quotes relating to youths and education. To youths, he addressed

Whatever you think, that you will be. If you think yourselves weak,

weak you will be; if you think yourselves strong, strong you will be.

On Education, he said, We want that education by which character

is formed, strength of mind is increased, the intellect is expanded

and by which one can stand on ones own feet.

While concluding, I once again thank the Institute of

Language and Culture for Rural Development, Mahidol University for

taking the initiative of organizing this Seminar in collaboration with

the Embassy and wish that the Institute will continue organizing

many more such events in the future also. I am also happy to learn

that the MA Course on Indian Studies, which was inaugurated

during last year has been running well. This post-graduate level

programme covers all aspects on India. I would also like to touch

  • Swami Vivekananda 16

upon the point that India has been a preferred destination

for higher education among Thai students and scholars and we

cherish this fact. More than six thousand Thai students studied

in India last year. The government of India gives over a

hundred scholarships to Thai students under its different schemes

for studies in various fields, including engineering, information

technology and Science. A joint Working Group set up under the

Memorandum of Understanding on Education signed between India

and Thailand gives focused direction to education exchange

    programmes between the two countries.

I sincerely wish and am sure that the Mahidol University

will continue to light the lamp of education and serve the cause of

    national development.

    Khob khun kha.

But most...In the modern era, the Indian people came from Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Tamil and Bengal. In the post colonial era, there are a lot of Indian people came to Thailand. : Thank you for permitting me to speak in both languages or the combination of Thai and the English. A lot of history has been mentioned but I want to talk about my own private experiences of being here. Well ah..40 years passed by but it looked like yesterday. And when the journey its appearing so short. Ill show you how Ive been very

  • Swami Vivekananda 61

comfortable happy here to tell my status. All of us are familiar with the color like school. Every time we due a color like school on new designed form and every design seems to be so fashionable fascinating so every experience of mine in Thailand has been worth talking about. It is sad that choices that we make in our life are very important because a future depends on them. And for the first choice that I met very very correctly appropriately and the right time was learning the local language. I did not feel shy, did not hesitate when Im using the right words or whether my tone was right or my dictions are right or not. Im not available for being laughed at by other people. So I just corrected right and without any shyness. And I began to speak Thai. The first word of Thai that I learnt that I still remember is . And Im so proud the first so I showed off everyone when I went get together as a newly married that very surprise what showing to other people I can speak a word of Thai, Ive been here only for a week. So that was a great accomplishment. Ajarn Sophana asked me to talk about any problems that I faced or anything that I might have come acorss. Life is full of adjustment. I would say a very very well known author by the name Evan Maxwell had said whether I fail or succeed, its no man doing, but my own and Im the force. It is so true that whatever we do that is responsible. We should not pull anybody else responsible for us doing. And Im happy to authorize decision learning about the food, learning about the culture. There so much similarity as others on the panel have talked about. It seems look at the religious practices with observing my family. We were not allowed to eat and experience except the morning bread and that is so true of Thai people. The atmosphere of serenity, Thai reality mixes with the smell of incense in the Thai temple. Its so much similar to that of the temple in India. So understanding the similarity between the culture the language the food I was very much at home. And today I say with so much pride that I brought up my children of knowing other languages or three languages, English, Indian and Thai equally well.

  • Swami Vivekananda 62

Because I go to international school but they always taught by their fatherthat you have to know Thai language The older time when I really felt crowded by emotional state was when I wanted to acquire Thai nationality and I wanted to send my Indian passport. I fail as I disconnected this with my native land. I rule on my Thai my relationship but Im very wrong them. Today my equal loyalty go to both country India my native land where I was born brought up and educated and Thailand which is now my country of residence. I love Thai people because they are full of love and very friendly. Perhaps I have another reason to be proud : I love to be part of mine to someone else.

.: The first time we just make sure that you are really Thai or not and now we believe that you are really Thai because you can speak Thai and now we open you to speak your comfortable language.

1: Hello everyone good afternoon. I want to first ask one question. When I read Thai-Indian some how I feel it should be Indian-Thai not Thai-Indian because they came from India. India origin but now Thai .For example somebody said African- American people who came from Africa to America but now they American. So I feeling should be Indian-Thai not Thai-Indian I may be wrong but that my idea. And secondly I just have so many thoughts about my life in Thailand in last 32 years next week I will complete 32 years in Thailand but Im Indian- Indian living in Thailand. Although my children my both children were born here. They have Thai names and Thai born certificate but we neverfor Thai citizenship for them because somehow even though living in Thailand as my husband was a professor at Asian Institute of Technology for 29 years so we felt like not in truly Thailand but Island in Thailand which was fully international having people from all of the world. And the soil was on Thai. So like when a point comes that we thought if we settle in Thailand, we found out even if we

  • Swami Vivekananda 73

have residence, we can not own land. We can not buy house because we still having Indian passport that was something which make us very sad because on one hand, I felt there is some relationship with this country at the right. Why people be here for 32 years. Then question of children we didnt think of asking our plan for them our Thai relationship because we are not sure that they decide certainly year for their after finishing study International school. They left for us now. They are lonely. So this is like something. I keep a very amazing that Im an Indian and Indian living in Thailand for more than 30 years more than living in India. Indian-Indian living in Thailand for 32 years more than I living in India but somehow I feel am not Thai but Im Indian. I can speak Thai but only just limited some conversation Thai because living in International government for last 3 years I am teaching in Mahidol University. Me and my husband both were teaching in Faculty of Engineering so these are just my thought that I want to share while sitting here and listening to Thai which Im not able to follow 100% sometimes maybe only 5-10% Thank you.

.: Thank you. Not only you everybody in this kingdom has the problem of identity. Now, I have idea of identity too. Everyone wants to response to this remark.

: Now Im interesting to you. I have my full sympathy for you. It is sad being here. So many years are not able to buy land on your name and the fact Thai government should come up with some other rule which allow some people living here for long time. I would like to acquire Thai nationality. Im sure some new rule should come up and will get what you want one day after indicating on your life teaching in Thailand. I have just a few words to say one is 10 . .

But the question that I have is in your heart or your heart of your father mother those all of you who were born in Thailand. What is a deep... deep what do you really miss about India what is it Indian that not here in Thailand something then. You hold deeply that stay in your heart. Now those of you who were born here may be difficult because you were born here may be your parents may spoke to you about Think for India so I would like to know that any things that stand out distinguishing India you dont find in Thailand. You talk to more about similarity about differences something with you love. Thank you.
