Dear Friends, Welcome to our FY 2016 Annual Report! With your financial support, we are achieving our mission: to prepare young people from Rhode Island’s urban communities for college access and success. I am delighted to share great news from three Crusaders who are currently in college. Michael Jimenez graduated from Providence Career & Technical Academy in 2015 and is in his sophomore year at Providence College. He is majoring in Electrical Engineering and has a minor in Computer Science. His favorite course so far has been Modern Physics. “It focused on important discoveries in physics over the last 100 years,” he says. “I liked going into Einstein’s theory of relativity in more depth.” As a Crusader, Michael learned SMART goal setting, which he still uses for time management. “It helps keep me from being overwhelmed when I have a lot to do in a short time,” he says. Patience Adegboyega graduated from Shea High School in 2016 and now attends Brown University. She is considering a double major in Political Science and Economics. Her favorite course so far was her fall seminar on the Literature of the Americas. Patience is thriving in the diverse community on campus. “As a Crusader, I was constantly meeting people who were different from me and learning how to make friends,” she says. “Being able to introduce myself and hold conversations with new people was imperative to my first weeks here.” Cristoffer Perez graduated from Times 2 STEM Academy in 2016 and attends Rhode Island College. His major is Computer Science. Lately Cristoffer is enjoying his statistics class. “In stats all the math you do is applicable to everyday life,” he says. “It’s math with a purpose.” He feels his experience as a Crusader definitely helped equip him for college. “It prepared me to be a leader and really helped me improve my public-speaking skills,” he says. Michael, Patience, Cristoffer, and thousands of other young people in The College Crusade have benefited from your generosity. I join them to offer our sincere thanks. We Believe: Knowledge is power. All students can learn and be successful. Persistence pays off. Opportunity can impact poverty. Parents are key to their child’s success. Family engagement is important. Anyone can go to college with the right support. Higher expectations yield higher results. Every student has unlimited potential and can be empowered to achieve their dreams. Our Mission To increase high school graduation, college and career readiness, and college completion for youth in Rhode Island’s low-income communities. 2016 Annual Report A Message from the President February 2017

Dear Friends,

Welcome to our FY 2016 Annual Report! With your financial support, we are

achieving our mission: to prepare young people from Rhode Island’s urban

communities for college access and success. I am delighted to share great news

from three Crusaders who are currently in college.

Michael Jimenez graduated from Providence Career & Technical Academy in

2015 and is in his sophomore year at Providence College. He is majoring in

Electrical Engineering and has a minor in Computer Science. His favorite course

so far has been Modern Physics. “It focused on important discoveries in physics

over the last 100 years,” he says. “I liked going into Einstein’s theory of relativity

in more depth.” As a Crusader, Michael learned SMART goal setting, which he

still uses for time management. “It helps keep me from being overwhelmed

when I have a lot to do in a short time,” he says.

Patience Adegboyega graduated from Shea High School in 2016 and now

attends Brown University. She is considering a double major in Political Science

and Economics. Her favorite course so far was her fall seminar on the Literature

of the Americas. Patience is thriving in the diverse community on campus. “As a

Crusader, I was constantly meeting people who were different from me and

learning how to make friends,” she says. “Being able to introduce myself and

hold conversations with new people was imperative to my first weeks here.”

Cristoffer Perez graduated from Times2 STEM Academy in 2016 and attends

Rhode Island College. His major is Computer Science. Lately Cristoffer is

enjoying his statistics class. “In stats all the math you do is applicable to everyday

life,” he says. “It’s math with a purpose.” He feels his experience as a Crusader

definitely helped equip him for college. “It prepared me to be a leader and really

helped me improve my public-speaking skills,” he says.

Michael, Patience, Cristoffer, and thousands of other young people

in The College Crusade have benefited from your generosity. I join

them to offer our sincere thanks.

We Believe:

Knowledge is power.

All students can learn and

be successful.

Persistence pays off.

Opportunity can impact

poverty.

Parents are key to their

child’s success.

Family engagement is

important.

Anyone can go to college

with the right support.

Higher expectations yield

higher results.

Every student has

unlimited potential and can

be empowered to achieve

their dreams.

Our Mission

To increase high school

graduation, college and

career readiness, and

college completion for

youth in Rhode Island’s

low-income communities.

“My Advisor is like a

second mother to me,

and at moments she is

like a sister. I felt a lot

of pressure to be the

best, but she told me I

don’t have to live up to

anyone’s expectations

but my own. That

made me feel free. It

helped me push myself

to excel.”
