The Importance of the 4th Commandment
This weekend is the Feast of the Holy Family. We see in this Gospel the
Holy Family fulfilling their religious obligations of going to the temple,
and we see that after Jesus was found in the temple, “He went down with
them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them; and his
mother kept all these things in her heart. And Jesus advanced in
wisdom and age and favor before God and man.” Down in Houston, Texas, the police department has issued a leaflet enti-
tled, “Twelve Rules for Raising Delinquent Children.” Here they are, as
printed in the local Chamber of Commerce publication, “Business”:
1. Begin with infancy to give the child everything he wants. In this
way he will grow up to believe the world owes him a living.
2. When he picks up bad words, laugh at him. This will make him
think he’s cute. It will also encourage him to pick up “cuter
phrases” that will blow off the top of your head later.
3. Never give him any spiritual training. Wait until he is 21, and then
let him “decide for himself.”
4. Avoid the use of the word “wrong.” It may develop a guilt com-
plex. This will condition him to believe later, when he is arrested
for stealing a car, that society is against him and he is being perse-
cuted.
5. Pick up everything he leaves lying around — books, shoes, clothes.
Do everything for him so that he will be experienced in throwing
all responsibility on others.
6. Let him read any printed matter he can get his hands on. Be careful
that the silverware and drinking glasses are sterilized, but don’t
worry about his mind feasting on garbage.
7. Quarrel frequently in the presence of your children. In this way
they will not be too shocked when the home is broken up later.
8. Give the child all the spending money he wants. Never let him earn
his. Why should he have things as tough as you did?
9. Satisfy his every craving for food, drink, and comfort. See that
every sensual desire is gratified. Denial may lead to harmful frus-
tration.
10. Take his part against neighbors, teachers, policemen. They are all
prejudiced against your child.
11. When he gets into real trouble, apologize to yourself by saying, “I
never could do anything with him!”
12. Prepare yourself for a life of grief. You’ll surely have it.
The fourth commandment commands two things:
1. Parents must teach their children about God and virtue. The
Catechism says: The fecundity of conjugal love cannot be reduced
solely to the procreation of children, but must extend to their moral
education and their spiritual formation. “The role of parents in
education is of such importance that it is almost impossible to pro-
vide an adequate substitute.” (29) The right and the duty of parents
to educate their children are primordial and inalienable. (30) 2. Children must obey their parents. “As long as a child lives at
home with his parents, the child should obey his parents in all that
they ask of him when it is for his good or that of the family. Chil-
dren, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.”
As we look at the Holy Family, let us ask how is the fourth command-
ment lived in our home?

FIND THE PERFECT GIFT: If you searched the radio on the
way to Mass today you probably wouldn’t be able to find any Christ-
mas music. Most people are finished with Christmas, yet as Catholics
we continue to celebrate the joyful news of the birth of our Savior!
Keep the tree up, the lights on, and share the joy with family and
friends! Continue to celebrate the Perfect Gift of God’s love through
the entire Christmas season (through January 6). Find daily reflections
and stream Christmas music from church choirs across the Archdiocese
of Washington at FindthePerfectGift.org.
THE PARISH OFFICE WILL BE CLOSED on Thursday, Decem-
ber 31 and Friday, January 1 in observance of the New Years holiday.
As always, should you experience an emergency situation making it
necessary to contact a priest, simply dial the parish office number and
follow the telephone prompts to be connected with the priest on duty.
