AASU returns seven players for 2010-11

TheArmstrongAtlanticStateUniversitywomen’sbasketballprogramsufferedthroughatough2009-10seasonrackedwithuntimelyinjuriesaswellasthechallengesofplayinginthePeachBelt,arguablythedeepestNCAADivisionIIleagueinthenation. ButthefuturelooksbrightasheadcoachMattSchmidtfoundseveralplayerswhowilllooktobuildthefoundationofArmstrongwomen’sbasketballforyearstocome. The Lady Pirates return a solid nucleus of five playerswhosawextensiveactionlastseason,aswellastworedshirtedplayersfromlastseason.AddtothatatalentedcoreofsixnewcomersandArmstrongaimstosurprisetheleaguein2010-11. Thelonesenioronthisseason’ssquadisforwardArpine Amirkhanyan (5-11,Sr.,VanNuys,Calif.),whoaveraged10.0pointsand7.9reboundspergame

in her first season asaLadyPiratelastseason.AmirkhanyanalsogainedvaluableexperienceplayingfortheArmeniannationalteamthisJulyintheFIBADivisionBEuropeanChampionshipsandisreadytotakethenextstepinbecom-ingoneofthePeachBeltConference’stoppostplayers. Senior Arpine Amirkhanyan averaged 10.0 points and 7.9 rebounds per game as a junior in 2009-10 and also played for the Armenian national team this summer in the FIBA Division B Euro-pean Championships.

Junior Brooke Long averaged 12.4 points per game through the first 14 games of 2009-10 before an injury halted her sea-son prematurely.

DefendingPBCchampionLanderhasbeenpickedto finish first in the aforementioned preseason poll of theleague’scoaches.ClaytonStatehasbeenpickedto finish second, followed by Francis Marion. Georgia College has been picked to finish fourth, followed by USCAikenandColumbusState.UNCPembrokewaspicked to finish seventh, followed by North Georgia andGeorgiaSouthwestern.Montevallowaspickedtofinish 10th, followed by Armstrong Atlantic State Uni-versity.AugustaStateandFlaglerwereeachpickedtofinish tied for 12th to round out the Peach Belt pre-seasoncoaches’poll. Matt Schmidt helped Northern Kentucky to the DII National Title in ‘07-’08

Matt SchmidtHead Women’s Basketball Coach MattSchmidtbeginshisthirdseasonastheheadwomen’sbasketballcoachatArmstrongAtlanticStateUniversity. In 2009-10, the Lady Pirates finished 9-17 overall after suffering a seriesofpreseasonandearlyseasoninjuriesthathamperedArmstrong.Late-seasonsuccessincludedacome-from-behind83-80winoverUNCPembrokeandaseasonseriessweepofAugustaState. In his first season as a collegiate head coach, Schmidt led the Lady Pi-rates to a third-place finish in the Peach Belt Conference and a 17-11 over-allrecord,includinga12-8markintheleague.TheLadyPiratescontinuedtheirstreakofdefeatingatleastonenationally-rankedteameachseason,stretchingthatstreaktoninestraightyearswithwinsoverNo.7-rankedUSCAikenandNo.7-rankedFrancisMarion. SchmidtjoinedAASUfromNorthernKentucky,whereheservedasanassistantcoachfrom2004-08.HewasinstrumentalinhelpingtheNorseachieveitssecondNCAADivisionIINationalChampionshipaseasonagoasNorthernKentuckywent28-8and

first location in Armstrong House in downtown Savannah toitscurrenthomeonascenic268-acrelotoffofAbercorn,the university has become one of the finest educational institutionsintheSoutheasternUnitedStates. ArmstrongJuniorCollegewasestablishedbytheMayor of Savannah and other public officials in 1935. HousedinthebeautifulandhistoricArmstrongHouse,agifttothecityfromthefamilyofGeorgeF.Armstrong,ArmstrongJuniorCollegegrewovertheyearstooccupyeightadditionalbuildingsintheForsythParkandMontereySquareareas. In1959,asArmstrongCollegeofSavannah,itbecameatwo-yearunitoftheUniversitySystem.TheBoardofRegentsconferredfour-yearstatusonArmstrongin1964andthecollegemovedtoa250-acrelocation,agiftfromDonaldLivingstonandtheMillsB.LaneFoundation,inDecemberof1965.AdditionalbuildingsjoinedtheeightoriginalstructuresasArmstrongaddedprofessionalandgraduateprogramsandtripledinsize. AndyCarterbeginshissecondyearastheDirectorofAthleticsatArmstrongAtlan-ticStateUniversityforthe2009-10season. CarterwashiredonApril8,2009,bythen-UniversityPresidentDr.ThomasZ.Jones after an exhaustive national search. In his first year with AASU, the Pirates sent sixteamstotheNCAAChampionshipsandwomen’stenniscapturedtheschool’ssev-enthNCAADivisionIINationalChampionship. CarterjoinedthePiratesfromNewberryCollege,whereheservedassince2002.Inthattime,heincreasedthevisibilityandsuccessoftheNewberryathleticdepart-ment both on and off the competitive playing field. Newberry has won four of the past five South Atlantic Conference academic titles, while also leading 14 teams to NCAA Championshipsappearancesaftertheschoolhadcollectedjustoneintheprevious11seasons. Hedevelopedthe“NewberryCollegeAthleticInitiative”uponarrivingattheNewberry,S.C.,campus,along-termplantoimproveNewberry’sathleticprogramwhilemaintainingtheschool’sexcellentacademicrecord.Otherhighlightsincludethebeginning of an intercollegiate wrestling program that finished second in NCAA Division II in 2009; SAC Championships for football in2006and2008,aswellasSACtitlesinwomen’sbasketballandmen’sgolf. DavidBrunkwasnamedthesecondPBCcommissionerinMayof2007.Brunkreplaced Marvin Vanover, who was the first PBCcommissionerfrom1991to2007.Brunkischargedwithcontinuingthestronggrowthoftheconferenceasitsseconderabegins. Dr.KendallBlanchard,presidentofGeorgiaSouthwesternStateUni-versity, began the first of histwo-yeartermastheleaguepresidentinJulyof2010. Theconferencecurrent-lyholdschampionshipsin13sports,sixformenandsevenforwomen.Theyaremen’sandwomen’scrosscountry,men’sandwomen’ssoccer,volley-ball,men’sandwomen’sbasketball,men’sandwomen’stennis,baseball,softballandmen’sandwomen’sgolf.

Nowenteringits21styearofexistencein2010-11,thePeachBeltConferencehasbecomeoneoftheeliteDivisionIIconfer-encesinthenation.Sinceitsinceptionin1990-91,thePeachBelthasdevelopedaconsistenthistoryofexcellencewhichcontinuestothisdaywith29nationalchampionships and 25 national finalists. Startingwithonlytwochampionshipsin1991,inmen’sandwomen’sbasket-ball,theconferencehasexpandedto13championshipsportswiththeadditionofwomen’sgolfinthefallof2009. TheconferencetracesitsrootsbacktoNovember of 1988 when 11 schools first metinGreenville,S.C.toformaDivisionIIconference.Followingasecondmeetingon Dec. 3, 1989, five of those 11 schools, plustwoothers,formedthePeachBeltandbeginplayinfall1990. ThePeachBeltwaslessthanayearoldbeforecapturinganationalchampion-ship.TheColumbusStategolfteamtookthehonorbywinningthe1992nationalcrown, the first of three golf champion-shipstheCougarsown.Oneyearlater,theLandermen’stennisteambegantheirrecord-breakingrunofeightstraightnational titles, the first PBC dynasty. Since then,USCAmen’sgolfhaswonthreestraightnationaltitlesfrom2004-06whileAASUwomen’stennishascapturedfourtitlesoverall. The2009-10seasonwasamongthemostsuccessfultheleaguehasseeninits20years.ArmstrongAtlanticStatewontheirthirdconsecutivewomen’stennisnationalchampionshipwhiletheAugustaStatemen’sbasketballteamcontinuedtheirunprecedentedrunwithathirdstraightappearanceintheEliteEight.Fla-gler became the first PBC volleyball team toreachtheNCAAFinalFour.TheNorthGeorgiasoftballteamwasranked#1inthenationineveryregular-seasonsoftballpoll while, in all, five PBC programs were ranked#1inthenation(GCSUmen’sgolf,ASUmen’sbasketball,AASUmen’sandwomen’stennis). ThesevenchartermembersoftheconferencewereArmstrongAtlanticStateUniversity,ColumbusStateUniversity,FrancisMarionUniversity,GeorgiaCol-lege&StateUniversity,LanderUniver-sity,USCAikenandUSCUpstate.ThenamePeachBeltAthleticConferencewasadopted in January of 1990 and modified toPeachBeltConferenceinMayof2000.
