Hobies story starts on a sun-bleached Southern Caliornia

beach in the late 1940s. Suring was the underground thing

and a wave-obsessed Hobie dreamt o combining his two loves,

woodworking and suring. He started by designing and building

Balsa-cored surboards in 1950 in his parents' Laguna Beach

garage at the age o just 16, and by 1954 he had opened Hobie

SurboardsSoCals irst sur shopin nearby Dana Point.

Business was good, but Hobies irst serious breakthrough didnt

come until 1958, when he and Gordon Grubby Clark built

the worlds irst oam-and-iberglass surboards. Lighter, aster,

and more maneuverable, these revolutionary boards forever

changed the sport and put Hobie Surboards on the map.

Sailing became Hobies next obsession. Not the stuy yacht-

club variety, but high-speed, high-octane un that could be

enjoyed right o a beach. Employing construction methods

honed in his surboard shop, and studying various traditional

multihull designs, the Hobie

14, the worlds irst iberglass

catamaran was unleashed

in 1968. his was ollowed

in 1969 by the two-person

Hobie 16, which is widely

recognized as one o the most

important sailboats o all time.

Suddenly, high-speed sailing

was accessible to everyone, and,

thanks to company-organized

regattas and now-inamous

beach parties; a Hobie liestyleo un, amily and riends was born. he slogan, Have a

Hobie Day became a mantra.

oday, Hobie catamarans are as popular as ever but the story

doesnt stop there. For the past 40 years weve been advancing

designand unin another direction: kayaks.

Ater careully considering a kayakers typical experience,

we realized that the paddle was the sports weak link. he

breakthrough came in 1997 with a brilliantly simple yet truly

revolutionary idea. Instead o subjecting your arms to a trip to

the gym, why not mount ins under the hull and connect them

to your kayak via pedals? The MirageDrive, as this pedal-

powered design was dubbed, was a hit and was recognized by

Popular Science magazines Best o Whats New award in 1998.

Suddenly, kayakers could enjoy newound speed, range and

silence. Much like how the Hobie 16 exposed millions o people

to the joys o high-speed multihull sailing, the MirageDrive has

helped countless kayakers have more fun on the water.

Also in the mid-90s, we began angling or a new market,

namely ishing. Compared to powerboats, Hobie ishing

kayaks are nearly silent, draw almost no water (allowingusers to enjoy skinny-water ishing haunts) and produce zero

CO2 emissions or water pollution. Plus, the advent o the

MirageDrive reed ishermen to ocus on landing their catch,

not their paddling. We now make several ishing-speciic

models, including the Outback, the Revolution and the new

Pro Angler. hese boatslike all Hobie kayaksare designed

to meet NMMA certiication requirements or lotation.

By the mid 2000s, new kayak models were coming online that

used two o our most successul innovations. he Adventure

Island, released in 2006, adds aka crossbars and ama loats

and a sailing kit to a MirageDrive-powered kayak, creating

a modern version o a traditional Polynesian sailing kayak.

In 2010, we introduced our two-man version, the andem

Island. hese boats represent a special co-evolution between

our history o designing and building the worlds best-loved

catamarans, and our desire to create the most innovative

and enjoyable kayaks aloat.

he companys newest big idea involved combining the

simplicity o an inlatable with the un o a sailing rig and the

ease o a MirageDrive. hese inlatable kayaks, introduced in

2007, make kayaking easier, more accessible and ininitely moretransportable. In act, the same un-minded DNA that made

Hobies irst oam-and-iberglass surboards so successul is the

exact genetic material that makes our kayaks the best ride on

the water. Now, even more people can enjoy the Hobie liestyle.
