a group of institutions which share a com-mon allegiance to aca-demic quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the educational purpose. Intercollegiate athlet-ics can and should complement academic life, rather than com-pete with it, and sports should enhance the experience of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the nine school presidents, who have taken an active role in the governance of the conference. Fifty-two teams from all 22 North Coast sports and all 10 members competed in the NCAA

post-season during the 2009-10 academic year. The NCAC added one more NCAA Division III swimming championship as Kenyon claimed the men’s title. Conference members have accumulated 61 national championships since the league was formed in February of 1983. In the past academic year, 180 All-America or ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America certificates were distributed to student-athletes from North Coast schools. The NCAC's commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excel-lence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country. The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pace-setter in the 21st century.

Founded in 1983, the North Coast Ath-letic Conference is dedicated to foster-ing a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athlet-ics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of nine aca-demically selective col-leges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania — Al-legheny College, Deni-son University, Hiram College, Kenyon Col-lege, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan Univer-sity, Wabash College, Wittenberg University, The College of Woost-er, along with affili-ate member Earlham College — the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards. Significantly, all nine NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 276 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored. A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Associa-tion's Division III, the NCAC features championship compe-tition in 23 sports — 11 for men and 12 for women. The 12 women's sports are among the most offered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s athletics is just one of the ele-ments that sets the North Coast apart. The goals of the conference express the best aspirations of American amateur athletics. The NCAC brings together

Denison, the defending NCAC tourney champion, has emerged as the preseason favorite in voting by the league’s coaches. The Big Red return two-time first-team All-NCAC selection Shaina Kaiser. Also the conference tournament MVP last winter, Kaiser led Denison with a 16.1 scoring average, fourth-best in the North Coast, and a 47.6 field-goal shooting percentage, third in the conference. All five starters return for the Big Red, who have won five of the past six conference tournaments, and won NCAC titles in 2007 and 2009. Junior Christina Myers was an honorable-mention guard for DU last season. Sophomore point guard Serafina Nuzzo also returns after earning all-tournament recognition during the Big Red’s tournament run. Ohio Wesleyan, picked to finish second in the conference in 2010-11, has four All-NCAC performers back in the fold. Senior guard Tyler Cordell was a first-team choice after leading OWU in scoring (16.3 points per game), assists (138), steals (71) and free-throw shooting (76.1 percent). Senior Kayla Gordon, the league’s top returning scorer with 1,021 career points, as well as junior Pam Quigney were second-team selections. Gordon and Quigney both ranked among the North Coast’s most accurate three-point shooters in 2009-10. All three players averaged over 11.7 points and 3.9 rebounds per game. Junior Dany Finck was an honorable mention choice at post as a sophomore. The Battling Bishops were second in the North Coast with a 14-2 mark last year, and posted a 20-7 overall record. Defending NCAC champion Wittenberg was predicted to finish third in this year’s race after topping the standings with a 15-1 conference record in 2009-10. Two starters from the Tigers‘ 12th NCAC championship team are back. Senior guard Katherine Hueter was a second-team All-NCAC choice as a junior after pulling down 209 rebounds. Forward Sarah Watson was a key reason the Tigers led the North Coast in rebounding margin last season. Wittenberg must find someone to fill the shoes of graduated NCAC Player of the Year Stephanie Boardman, who was second in the North Coast in both scoring and rebound in 2009-10. League coaches picked Kenyon to finish fourth. The Ladies are coming off a 17-10 campaign in which they finished fourth and advanced to the semifinals of the conference tournament for the sixth consecutive season. Junior forward Morgan Korinek is Kenyon’s go-to player after leading her team in rebounding (7.9 boards per game) and steals (2.7 per game), and leading the league in field-goal percentage (60.1) as a sophomore.

Korinek was a first-team All-NCAC performer and is one of three returning starters for the Ladies. Kat Powers, a senior guard and Katie Adlam, a sophomore guard, return in the backcourt. Allegheny finished fifth in the coaches’ voting. Eight letterwinners and three starters return from a 10-16 team that went 7-9 in the NCAC and finished sixth. The Gators must find replacements for two All-NCAC players who were lost to graduation. Senior guard Jill Gregory,

a first-team all-conference performer, leads the trio of returning starters. She is the team’s top returning scorer and rebounder. Senior guard Britni Mohney and sophomore forward Heidi Goeller are other veteran starters. A pair of All-NCAC performers lead Oberlin into the 2010-11 season. Senior guard Syrea Thomas, an honorable-mention choice, and sophomore point guard Allison Anderson, a second-team selection and the NCAC’s Newcomer of the Year, are the top players for the Yeowomen. Anderson led the NCAC in assists (5.6 per game) and steals (3.10 in her rookie campaign. Sophomore Kelli Warlich is another returnee. All three players pulled down over 100 rebounds and scored over 12 points per game in 2009-10. Oberlin was predicted to improve a spot from seventh to sixth after a 5-21 season, 4-12 in the North Coast. A new era begins for Wooster as head coach Ashley Reid takes over as the program’s sixth head coach. With only one starter back, the Fighting Scots’ biggest challenge will be filling the shoes vacated by the graduation of two-time first-team All-NCAC player Kym Wenz. She led the conference in scoring and three-point shooting in her senior year. The top returning scorer is junior post Kristen Schwartz (6.7 points per game), while sophomore forward Jessica Wingen is the top returning rebounder (4.3 rebounds per game). Wooster was picked to finish seventh. Youth prevails for Hiram as the Terriers have just three upperclassmen back in the fall. Jess Cowan, a senior guard, leads the charge. Junior point guard Kelsey Durichko is also back after she led the Terriers in assists (73) and steals (33) as a sophomore. Junior guard Tiffany Shields was the first player off the bench for Hiram last season. The Terriers, who were 4-22 overall, 3-13 in the NCAC, were predicted to finish eighth. The regular season starts November 15 and the first North Coast Athletic Conference game is set for December 1 when Hiram visits Wooster.

The Gators return eight letter-winners, including three starters, from a year ago. Highlighting the returners is two-time All-NCAC performer Jill Gregory. The 5-8 senior was named All-NCAC First Team last season after averaging 14.2 points per game and was fifth in the NCAC in scoring. Complimenting Gregory will be returning starters Britni Mohney and Heidi Goeller. Mohney started and played in all 26 games running the point for the Gators in 2009-10. She led the team in assists (64) and finished tied for 10th in the NCAC. Goeller led the starters in field goal percentage last year, shooting at a clip of .459 from the floor. Allegheny loses two All-NCAC performers to graduation in Brittany Bell and Emilie Simone, but will have returning young talent that gained valuable playing experience a year ago to mesh with the six newcomers to help fill the void.

The Big Red returns 13 players from their 2009-2010 squad which cap-tured the 2010 NCAC Tournament championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the sixth time under head coach Sara Lee. Returning for her senior year is Shaina Kaiser, the 2010 NCAC Tourna-ment Most Outstanding Player. Kaiser, who eclipsed the 1,000-point mark last season, averaged 16.1 ppg and 6.6 rpg during her junior campaign. The 2008-09 NCAC Player of the Year also earned first-team All-NCAC honors in 2009-10. The Hiram College women’s basketball team will feature a very young squad in 2010-11 with only three upperclassmen returning and one starter from last season’s roster. Senior guard Jess Cowan will be back to lead the Terriers this season. Last winter, she played in 24 games and was third on the team in scoring with a 5.9 points per game average. She was also amongst the team leaders in shooting percentage (33.8 percent) and assists (29). Joining Cowan will be a pair of juniors in Kelsey Durichko and Tiffany Shields. Durichko was the team’s starting point guard and led the team in assists with 73 and steals at 33. Shields played in all but one game last season coming off the bench and averaged 4.0 ppg. In addition, look for sophomores Breanna Host, Chelsea Kovach, Amy Geisman, Emily Smerchansky and Calysia Smyers to make an impact for the Terriers this season. Hiram will begin its season on Saturday, Nov. 27 against Westminster College in a non-conference game in New Wilmington, Pa.

The Kenyon College women’s basketball program has reached the semifinal round of the NCAC tournament for six consecutive seasons now. Two of those seasons included appearances in the championship game. The Ladies, however, are still looking to get over that final hurdle and claim their first tournament title since the 1999-00 campaign. In order to reach that goal in the upcoming season, Kenyon will be relying on three returning starters to lead the way. In the front court, junior forward Morgan Korinek will be the go-to player. In the backcourt, senior Kat Powers and sophomore Katie Adlam will run the show. Korinek led the Ladies in scor-ing (14.1 ppg) and rebounding (7.9 rpg) last season. She also established a new program single-season record for field goal percentage (.601). Powers and Adlam both averaged better than two assists per game last season and chipped in with 7.8 and 5.3 points per game, respectively. Even with that offensive punch returning to the lineup, the Ladies will continue to play with a ‘defense first’ mentality. Last year, the Ladies held op-ponents to an average of 55.7 points per game. That marked the third straight season the Kenyon women led the NCAC in scoring defense.

The Oberlin College women’s basketball team enters its 2010-2011 cam-paign led by senior guard and co-captain Syrea Thomas and two emerging stars in sophomore Kelly Warlich and the 2009-2010 NCAC Newcomer of the Year, point guard Allison Anderson. Last season Anderson also garnered second-team All-NCAC Honors, while Thomas picked up honorable-mention accolades. Anderson, a native of Springfield, Illinois, led the league in assists with 5.6 helpers per game and steals with 3.1 rip-aways per contest. She also played the most minutes of any player in the NCAC, totaling 1,004 for an average of 38.6 per game. Furthermore, her 13.8 points per game were eighth-best in the conference, while her .768 free throw percentage was fourth best. Anderson, who scored 20-plus points eight times and became the first freshman in school history to record a triple-double, is just the second Yeowomen to earn NCAC Newcomer of the Year honors and the first since 1999 when Nzinga Broussard earned the honor. Along with Warlich, Thomas, and Anderson, the Yeowomen will look for added contributions from sophomores Megan Leary and Ellen Neumann and senior co-captain Christina Spencer.

They don’t have a catchy nickname, but the Ohio Wesleyan triumvirate of senior Tyler Cordell, senior Kayla Gordon, and senior Pam Quigney is back for one more run at a North Coast Athletic Conference championship. The trio helped head coach Nan Carney-DeBord win the NCAC tourna-ment and advance to the NCAA playoffs in 2009, and finish as conference runner-up with a sparkling 14-2 record last season. Cordell, a guard, was third in the league in scoring and second in assists on the way to first-team All-NCAC laurels last year. Gordon, a post, was 10th in scoring and 13th in rebounding and is a three-time all-conference selection. Quigney, a guard, was 13th in scoring and one of the league’s top three-point shooters and is a two-time all-league choice. The 2010-11 Bishops are much more than The Nameless Three and a couple of fill-ins, however. Sophomore guard Kandis Walker made a state-ment with her defense and transition games last year, and looks to win a start-ing spot this year, as does sophomore post Helen Scheblo, who displayed flashes of brilliance last season. Newcomers who should make an impact include freshman guards Julia Grimsley and Kalee Seagle, and junior post Natalie Fisher.

After a run to the 2009-10 NCAC regular season championship, the Wit-tenberg Tigers return five letterwinners, including two starters, for their title defense. Leading the charge a year after the Tigers posted a 19-8 overall record and won an NCAC-record 12th regular season title are senior wing Katherine Hueter and junior post Sarah Watson. They step into leadership positions after the departure of an outstanding senior class, including 2010 NCAC Player of the Year Stephanie Boardman. Hueter ranked third on the team in scoring and second in rebounding in 2009-10, and Watson was fourth in both categories. Hueter was a second-team All-NCAC honoree a year ago after averaging 10.5 points and 7.7 rebounds and finishing with a 66-60 assist-turnover ratio, tops on the team. Watson increased her scoring and rebounding averages significantly in her first season as a starter, improving to 8.4 points and 6.2 in 2009-10. She and Hueter, along with sophomore post Kim Replogle will be keys to Wittenberg’s dominance on the glass again after the Tigers led the conference in rebounding margin each of the last two years. The biggest question marks are on the perimeter, where only junior Lauren Cassel returns after getting extensive playing time last year. She appeared in 27 games, while junior Lyndsey Clark appeared in 13 games in 2009-10.

Wooster’s women’s basketball team begins a new era in 2010-11 as Ashley Reid takes over as the program’s sixth head coach. Six returning letterwinners are poised to see their roles expand as they try to replace the production of the program’s only All-American selection, Kym Wenz. It’s likely the Fighting Scots will utilize the post tandem of junior Kristen Schwartz and sophomore Jessica Wingen even more this season. Schwartz is the top returning scorer, averaging 6.7 points and a team-high 54.1% shooting clip a season ago, while Wingen (5.4 ppg, 4.3 rpg) has a knack around the basket, and nearly averaged a block per game in her rookie campaign. Also returning is the team’s lone senior, Taylor Keegan, and junior point guard Keshia Butler, both who will be relied upon in the backcourt. Keegan is productive around the perimeter and behind the arc, where she chipped in 5.8 points and 29 three-pointers last winter. Butler’s speed will allow Wooster to push the tempo at times, and she’s poised to improve upon last season’s 2.9 points and 2.4 assists averages. Juniors Samantha Sulzer, who started nine games in 2009-10, and Kinsey Walker are also back to add depth in the paint. Also, it is expected that several first-year players could contribute right out of the gate, including guards Karley Walker and Suvi Puripattarapan.

The 27th North Coast Athletic Conference men’s basketball season gets under way on November 15. In the annual preseason coaches’ poll, Wooster was picked to repeat as champion. The Fighting Scots have won the past six NCAC titles and have 13 in the history of the conference. Wooster returns four starters and 10 letter winners from a 25-6 team that went 15-1 in the league, including three senior starters in Nathan Balch, Ian Franks and Bryan Wickliffe. Franks was last year’s conference player of the year after averaging 17.9 points per game, second best in the league. Balch was NCAC Tournament MVP and posted an 11.9 scoring average in 2009-10. Wickliffe posted career-highs with 11.2 points and 7.2 rebounds per game. Franks and Wickliffe were named first-team All-NCAC, while Balch was a second-team selection. Wittenberg was picked to finish second in the conference race in 2010-11. The Tigers were third last year with an 11-5 NCAC mark, and were 21-7 overall. They return three starters led by senior guard Chris Sullivan. He led the conference last year with 90 three-pointers and is the team’s top returning scorer. Sullivan was second-team All-NCAC. His backcourt mate, junior Josh McKee, a three-year starter, also returns. Wittenberg also has depth in the frontcourt with the return of juniors Michael Cooper and Clayton Black. Despite a very young lineup, Ohio Wesleyan has plenty of talent and experience to rely on. The Battling Bishops, selected to finish third in 2010-11, have a deep backcourt, led by junior wing Tim Brady. A first-team All-NCAC choice, Brady posted a 16.7 scoring average, fourth best in the North Coast, as a sophomore. Sophomore guard Andy Winters is a returning starter at guard. Marshall Morris, a sophomore post player, is the third starter back for the Battling Bishops. Senior Wes Smith, a two-time first-team all-conference performer, leads Wabash into the coming season. The Little Giants, predicted to finish fourth, have a solid leader in Smith. He led the conference in scoring at 18.2 points per game and is the league’s top career scorer entering the 2010-11 campaign with 1,233 points. Smith is also the active career leader in the NCAC in field goals (451), free throws (286), blocked shots (79) and steals (174). Two all-conference performers have graduated, but Wabash has transfer A.J. Sutherlin from Earlham, in the mix. Sutherlin scored 16.6 points per game to lead the Quakers and earn honorable mention from the North Coast last winter.

Hiram posted a 9-7 record to place fifth in the conference last year, and the coaches think the Terriers will repeat that performance. Five senior starters return, including two-time All-NCAC guard Chris Roberts. He posted 14.2 points per game and pulled down 118 rebounds last year. No players were lost to graduation. Other senior starters for Hiram are Babajide Eniola, Deon Milton, Glenn Campbell and Nick Russo. Denison also has a lot

of experience returning as four starters and 10 letter winners are back. The Big Red, predicted to place sixth, were 7-19 last season and seventh in the league at 7-9. Sophomore wing Dimonde Hale was the conference newcomer of the year after he averaged 14.3 points, and led the team in field goals (149). Senior wing Larry Farmer led the NCAC in rebounding last season with a 9.7 clip, and was voted second-team honors. First-year head coach Jim Driggs isn’t the only new face for Allegheny in the coming season. Driggs has one starter and six lettermen back in the fold from last season’s third-place team that posted an 11-5 record in NCAC play. Junior guard Donte Briscoe will likely play a more prominent role after leading the conference in field goal shooting (.622) and steals (2.7 per game) off the bench as a sophomore. Junior James Ness, who shot over 57 percent last season, will anchor the frontcourt. Newcomers will be key to the Gators’ fortunes in the new season. Kenyon also had a new head coach as Dan Priest takes over the reigns. The Lords finished eighth in the standings last season, and have three starters among six lettermen returning. Senior Uros Vasiljevik and junior Anthony Chun will be counted on for veteran leadership. Kenyon will be bolstered by the return of Kodey Haddox, the conference’s Newcomer of the Year in 2008. The Lords were picked to finish eighth. Sophomore Andrew Fox and junior Josh Merritt lead Oberlin into the 2010-11 campaign. The Yeomen, picked to finish ninth, aim to improve upon that finish with a core of eight lettermen and four starters returning. Fox had an outstanding rookie season by leading Oberlin and all conference freshmen in scoring (15.0 points per game), and garnering honorable-mention accolades. Merritt has been a reliable force for the Yeomen throughout his career at the point. The conference season begins with three games on December 1.

Allegheny is a program in clear transition. While replacing four starters and six of the team’s top eight scorers would create uncertainty for even the nation’s most established teams, the Gators will also embrace a philosophical adjustment ahead of the new campaign as Allegheny turns to first-year head coach Jim Driggs to help facilitate a revival for the school’s hardwood unit. The Gators do return a solid, if thin, corps of returners. Paced by 2009-10 sixth man Donte Briscoe, who led the NCAC last season in field goal percentage and steals, and assist leader Devone McLeod, the Blue and Gold showcase two game-ready talents on the perimeter. Senior Seth Eisner is a 6’3” shooting specialist, while 6’ 6” junior James Ness will anchor the middle. Briscoe and McLeod headline a congested back court as Allegheny’s small stature will result in many three and four guard looks. Freshman point D’Andre Corbin immediately bolsters the talent level, while sophomore Dan Schlossberg and rookie Ryan Stanko can swing between the guard and forward positions and have a good touch from the outside. The front court will be paced by Ness, who shot over 57 percent from the floor last year. Rookies Bobby Theiss and Clark Tritto will battle for minutes in the post. The group’s collective ability to rebound is key to a successful season.

Head Coach Bob Ghiloni returns for his ninth season at the helm of the Big Red basketball program and he returns four starters and 10 letterwinners to the mix in 2010-11. Sophomore Dimonde Hale returns after an outstanding freshman season. He tied for the team lead in scoring at 14.3 ppg and was named the NCAC Newcomer of the Year. Hale led the team in field goals made (149), and was second on the team in free-throws made (59), rebounds (113), offensive re-bounds (52) and blocks (14). Also returning to the starting lineup are senior Larry Farmer, junior Mike Garabedian and the junior guard tandem of Brett Tiberi and Casey Stockton. Garabedian averaged 8.9 ppg, Tiberi shot 39 percent from 3-point range, and Stockton finished second on the team in as-sists. The Big Red backcourt will also get a lift from the return of junior point guard Jim Lefew who missed all of last season with an injury. In the front court, junior Marr Mansfield returns after seeing action in 23 games as a sophomore.

The Hiram College men’s basketball team will boast a very experienced team in 2010-11 as the Terriers lost no players to graduation from a year ago and have six seniors on the roster, including all five starters back. Last winter, Hiram qualified for the NCAC postseason for the fourth straight season and will look for a possible fifth straight trip as the Terriers will be led again by senior two-time All-NCAC guard Chris Roberts. Roberts led the team and was 10th overall in the conference in scoring at 14.2 points per game. He was also amongst the team leaders in field goal percentage (41.9 percent), free-throw percentage (72.2 percent), assists (55) and steals (29). Roberts needs 78 points this season to become the 22nd player in school history to score 1,000 points. Hiram opens its season on Monday, Nov. 15 in the home opener against non-conference opponent the University of Mount Union at Price Gymnasi-um.

The 2010-11 campaign brings a new face to the Kenyon College bench as Dan Priest becomes the 19th head coach in the program’s 111-year history. Priest takes over a team that showed consistent improvement under previous head coach Matt Croci, but fell on hard times in the 2009-10 season. The Lords, who finished last year with a 6-19 overall record and a 3-13 mark in North Coast Athletic Conference play, remain a young team, but don’t lack experience. That gives Priest a solid core to lean on in his first year at Kenyon. Senior Uros Vasiljevik and junior Anthony Chun will provide the veteran leadership for the Lords. Chun averaged 6.9 points and 2.6 assists per game while running the offense as a sophomore. Vasiljevik saw extended minutes for the first time in his career and responded by scoring 6.7 ppg. The Lords have the makings of an accurate three-point shooting team. Marcus Healy nailed .357 percent (41-115) of his attempts as a freshman, and Vasiljevik canned 19-of-55 (.345) of his shots beyond the arc. Kenyon will also get a boost from the return of senior Kodey Haddox, the NCAC and Great Lakes Region Newcomer of the Year in 2008. Haddox averaged 13.8 points and hit three-pointers at a .413 clip (57-138) as a freshman.

The Oberlin College men’s basketball team enters their 2010-2011 cam-paign led by junior point guard Josh Merritt and sophomore sensation Andrew Fox. Merritt, coming off his best season in the crimson and gold, set career highs in assists, points, and minutes, while the co-captain also remained among the league leaders in several statistical categories. Fox has already cemented himself as a force to be reckoned with in the conference as he led all freshmen in the NCAC in scoring (15.0), rebounds (6.3), and minutes per game (33.4), while also earning honorable-ention ac-colades. Senior center James Tompsett returns to control the paint for the Yeomen, while Oberlin will look to sophomore Charlie Crawford-Silva, junior Mazi Farris, and senior co-captain Pat Bernhard for continued contribution on the court. The Yeomen will also look to get solid contribution and added depth from five newcomers, which include three guards and two big men.

With only one senior and one junior with significant playing experience on the roster, the easy prediction would be growing pains for the 2010-11 Ohio Wesleyan men’s basketball team. Head coach Mike DeWitt concedes the point on his squad’s youth, but notes that the Bishops have a chance to be pretty good once February rolls around. The Bishop backcourt is well-stocked with junior wing Tim Brady and sophomore guard Andy Winters. Brady was a first-team All-NCAC selection last season after ranking fourth in the conference in scoring, while Winters led the league in assists. The other wing spot could go to sophomore Greg White, who helped the United States win the U-21 World Deaf Basketball championship during the summer; or sophomore Vaughn Spaulding, who made some highlight-reel-quality plays in limited action last season. Freshman Dré White also will see time at both guard and wing positions. Sophomore post Marshall Morris emerged as a starter last season, ranking among the NCAC’s top 10 rebounders. Senior Andrew Martin, who has provided some quality minutes during the last two seasons, will look to win the other post position, along with sophomore Billy Reilich and freshman Reuel Rogers.

Wabash returns three starters from last year’s 18-8 team that finished second in the North Coast Athletic Conference standings with a 12-4 league record. Head Coach Mac Petty guided his squad to second place in the NCAC regular season standings. Senior Wes Smith is back after starting in all 26 games last season. Smith earned first team All-NCAC honors for the second straight season after leading Wabash in scoring (18.2 ppg), steals (49), and blocked shots (31). He also tied for second on the team in assists (53) and was second in rebounding (6.7 rpg). The Little Giants will need to replace All-NCAC players Aaron Brock and Chase Haltom. Junior AJ Sutherlin could fill either roll after transferring from Earlham College where he earned honorable mention All-NCAC honors av-eraging 16.8 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. Senior Ben Burkett started 22 games last year, averaging 7.1 points and 3.9 boards a game. Seniors Andrew Gilman and Dominique Thomas and juniors Brian Shelbourne and Aaron Zimmerman will all see playing time at the guard position. Derek Bailey, Jordan Surenkamp, Billy Powers, and Nick Curosh provide plenty of experience coming off the bench. Freshmen Pete Nicksic and Wes Zimmerman could also make an immedi-ate impact in their first season with the Little Giants.

The Wittenberg Tigers return nine letterwinners, including three starters, with sights set on returning the program to its customary heights. Wittenberg, with the most wins in NCAA Division III history and 53 consecu-tive non-losing seasons, is led by senior guard Chris Sullivan. He averaged 12.4 points per game while draining a school-record-tying 90 three-pointers, which led the NCAC and ranked among the best in the nation. Josh McKee, a mainstay in the starting lineup the last two years while also starring at wide receiver for the nationally ranked Tiger football team, averaged 9.6 points and 3.4 rebounds in 2009-10. Senior Seth Hill, who contributed 4.1 points and 2.1 rebounds a year ago, also returns to the backcourt. The Tigers are deep in the frontcourt, starting with juniors Michael Cooper and Clayton Black, who combined to average 14.3 points and 8.6 rebounds in 2009-10. Cooper appeared in 20 games after setting a school record with 60 receptions for the football team in 2009, while Black led the team with a .587 shooting percentage. Also returning are sophomore wing David Hieber, who hit 33 three-pointers a year ago, senior post Lewis Buzzard, junior forward Jacob Weide and junior post Alex Brandt.

A senior-laden Wooster team will take the floor this season, with return-ing starters Nathan Balch, Ian Franks, and Bryan Wickliffe among three of the Fighting Scots’ four four-year varsity players. Six other letterwinners are back, however, they’ll also have to replace one of the most important pieces of the 2009-10 NCAC championship team, starting point guard Brandon Johnson. Franks, last season’s NCAC Player of the Year, and Balch will anchor the backcourt. An efficient scorer, Franks averaged 17.9 points while ranking among the top-seven in the conference in all three shooting categories (52.4 FG, 40.9 3FG, and 77.3 FT percentages), while Balch chipped in 11.9 points, which included 67 three-pointers last winter. Johnson’s graduation will likely result in more significant roles for juniors Matt Fegan and Justin Warnes. Wickliffe is expected to anchor the post again both offensively and defen-sively after earning first-team All-NCAC status with career highs of 11.2 points and 7.2 rebounds. Wooster’s fourth returning starter, junior forward Justin Hal-lowell, may utilize his 6-7 frame to continue to assist Wickliffe on the defensive end while looking to improve upon his 9.0 scoring average from last year. Additional veteran support will be provided by junior Mike Evans, a sharp-shooting forward, and rising sophomores Josh Claytor and Jake Mays, who at 6-7 and 6-8, respectively, both could see increased action in the paint.
