Cross CoUntry The 2010 UConn Cross Country season was a major step forward for the program. In a sign of good things to come, the underclassmen led the way in seven of 10 races this season. The signs of a strong season began with a victory at the Army Invite in the first meet of the year and a second-place showing at the BIG EAST Preview in Syracuse, N.Y. The Huskies placed second overall, besting national powerhouse West Virginia in the process. Sophomore Shauna McNiff led the way, placing fourth overall. The very young team made some noise early in the championship season with a second-place fin-ish at the New England Championships, the highest finish ever by a UConn squad. Freshman Allison Lasnicki finished first for UConn, placing 14th overall.

The team followed with another historical finish at the BIG EAST Championships. The BIG EAST Conference proved once again it was the top conference in the nation as the league placed four teams (No. 1 Villanova, No. 4 Georgetown, No. 9 Providence, No. 10 Syracuse) in the top-10 at the 2010 NCAA Championships. Running in the most dominant conference in the country, the Huskies placed seventh to set the top mark in the history of UConn Cross Country.

The team was led by one of the hottest freshman in the conference, Lauren Sara, who finished among the top-five freshmen in the BIG EAST. Hot on her heels were two underclassmen, sophomore Shau-na McNiff and freshman Allison Lasnicki. The top-five runners for UConn were consistently over five minutes faster as a group than the team from 2009. The Northeast Regionals saw similar results as Lauren Sara ran the top mark for UConn, finishing 41st overall and as one of the top-six fresh-men in the Northeast Region. All of UConn’s top seven ran personal bests at the NCAA Northeast Regionals (Lauren Sara 21:19, Shuana McNiff 21:33, Leah Andrianos 21:49, Heather Wilson 21:57, Kimberly Moran 22:04, Allison Lasnicki 22:13, and Courtney Dinnan 22:15).

The future is exciting for a young UConn squad graduating only one senior, captain Leah Andrianos.

trACk And fieldon tHe trACk...Distance/Middle Distance Once again the Huskies will be led by NCAA Regional Qualifier and ECAC Champion Leah Andrianos. After seeing her school record in the indoor 1,000m broken by teammate Meghan Cunningham (person-al best 2:49:65) Andrianos reclaimed it by running a 2:47:41 en route to winning the ECAC Championships. She also ran a school record and NCAA Regional Qualifying mark in the outdoor 800m with a personal

best 2:08.74. Not only is she ready to challenge for the top spots in the 800m and indoor 1,000m at this year’s BIG EAST Champion-ships, she looks poised to drop her mile personal best and school record significantly from 4:49.96.

The mid-distance group will also be looking for major contri-butions from BIG EAST scorer and NCAA outdoor regional qualifier Heather Wilson. Wilson set a personal best in reaching the NCAA Regionals in the 800m during 2009 by running 2:09.81.

Senior Meghan Cunningham, an NCAA Regional Qualifier in

the steeplechase, will provide tre-mendous help in the mid-distance

races this season. Cunningham set the UConn school record in the out-door 1,500m with a time of 4:28.61. The coaching staff will look for Cun-ningham to pick up where she left off last season and have a tremendous impact on the team and in the BIG EAST Conference. Also expected to contribute to the scoring this year are indoor BIG EAST finalist Christine Vogel (mile) and fifth-place finisher Brigitte Mania (1,000m). As always, the UConn 4x800m relay will be relied upon to contribute big points both indoors and outdoors. All four members of the school record-setting and No.9 nationally ranked team will be back this year. Leah Andrianos, Brigitte Mania, Meghan Cunningham, and Heather Wilson set a new mark last year in both seasons with an 8:41.38 time dur-ing the indoor season followed by a time of 8:41.78 during the outdoor campaign.

The distance events will be helped tremendously by a pair of outstand-ing freshmen, Footlocker National Finalist Lauren Sara and Allison Lasnicki. Both freshmen ran as UConn’s No. 1 runner at several points during the cross country campaign. Sara and Lasnicki join with Annabel Clarke, one of the top high school steeplechasers in the country, to create the bulk of a very talented freshman class that looks to make an immedi-ate impact on the squad.

The remainder of the distance runners made huge gains over the sum-mer and throughout the cross country season and look to translate that to the track. In particular, sophomore Shauna McNiff has looked terrific this fall and should be a factor in the 3,000 and the 5,000m come the BIG EAST Championships.

Sprints and Hurdles: The UConn sprinters enter the 2011 season headlined by its first ever track All-American Trisha-Ann Hawthorne (Elmsford, N.Y.). Haw-thorne, the two-time co-captain and the most decorated track athlete in the history of the program, has dominated the short sprints in the BIG EAST and ECAC since her freshman year. The multi-conference cham-pion in the 60-200 meter has returned for her senior season and is look-ing to add some indoor All-American titles to her already impressive resume. The All-American in the 100m is looking forward to improving on her success of 2010 as one of the best collegiate sprinter to one of the best in the world. With the graduation of four time NCAA Qualifier and one of UConn’s most versatile sprinters, Phylicia George, Hawthorne will look to lead a talented freshman class to the national level. The performance of the sprint group may be the deciding factor in UConn’s attempt to regain the BIG EAST Titles.

Short Sprints The Huskies will look to three sophomores Kristen Brown, Kewanna Donaldson and Whitney Holder in the short sprints. Brown returns after competing at the 2010 NCAA Championship as a part of the 4x100 meter relay team that also set a new ECAC Championship Record. Donaldson is looking to be a part of the national scene in the 60m and 100m in 2011. Holder, the BIG EAST Outdoor Long Jump Champion showed promise in the 4x200m relay, helping to set a new UConn indoor record (1:39.46). They will get tremendous help from the talented freshman class enter-ing Storrs this season. Leading the way will be New York State 55m and 100m hurdles Champion Madalayne Smith. Smith, one of the nation’s top high school hurdlers in 2010, will be joined by Chantal Scott and Shavon Briscoe. Scott will be instrumental in all the short sprint events

The University of Connecticut women’s track and field team is coming off two of its most productive years in program history. In 2009, UConn received its best ranking in program history at 13th in the Nation. The Huskies have now won eight major championships, including their remarkable “tri-fecta” from the 2008 indoor season when the Huskies won the BIG EAST, New England and ECAC Championships. In 2009, UConn earned is second consecutive BIG EAST title.

its third straight title.

Throws The duo of two-time All-American junior Victoria Flowers (weight throw) and NCAA competitor and BIG EAST Champion Tynisha McMillian (2009 indoor shot put) have provided some of the program’s most memorable moments in the throws. Flowers, coming off an extraordinary performance in gaining the runner-up spot at the NCAA Indoor National Championships, recorded three personal-best throws in her first three attempts (20.83m, 21.23m, 21.44m). She will once again be looked upon to domi-nate in the 20lb. weight event. Flowers, the New England record holder at 68’5”, also won the ECAC (20.07m) and New England (18.63m) Titles last season. Her work in the shot put should not go unnoticed as she will provide break-out performances as the year progresses.

Redshirt senior Tynisha McMillian, with outdoor eligibility, will continue her assault on her present school record in the shot put (15.58m) while aiming at former NCAA qualifier Amy Parkose-wich’s discus record of 52.86m.

In the javelin, sophomore Emma Crowcroft has made a significant statement on the national stage, having the top freshman mark in the country last season (46.59m). She placed 16th at the NCAA Championships in her first year at Connecticut. As an ECAC Champion and a NCAA finalist, the invaluable experience learned last season should provide for a banner year. Number two on the UConn outdoor list behind former NCAA finalist Amanda Martin (50.94m), Crowcroft should seriously contend for the top honor. Look for juniors Danika Ham and Michelle Bashaw to challenge Crowcroft throughout the season. Horizontal Jumps The results from last year should be a sign for great expectations this time around. Sophomores Whitney Holder and Kristen Brown have arguably put themselves into an elite category, winning both the BIG EAST Outdoor (6.11) and ECAC Indoor Titles (5.98m), respectively. With added consistency, expect the dynamic duo to push for the indoor school record of 20’6 ¼” (6.25m) held by former great Cheryl Brantle (1992 All-American) and the outdoor record of 21’2 ¼”(6.46m) held by Carol Galloway – UConn’s first All-American in 1985. Both long jump records are the oldest-re-maining marks in field events at UConn.

Development in the triple jump has been on-going and should see results as the season commences. Sophomore Brittany Power has had an outstanding preseason and will push for points as will first-year high jumper Natasha McLaren. Holder will extend her-self into this event and provide great possibilities going forward.

and Briscoe will stretch her talent out to the longer hurdle events.

Long Sprints: With the graduation of three-time NCAA Qualifier and five-time BIG EAST Champion Mandela Graves-Fulgham, the Huskies will turn to a less experienced group of long sprinters. This year’s team will look to junior co-captain Cornieta Anderson. Her emergence as a leader this year will help take the sprinters to the next level. Seniors Samantha Willis and Coleen Hepburn, both with great work ethics, will also emerge as conference elites in 2011. Hepburn, a BIG EAST performer last season in the 500m, is striving to be at the top of our conference list. Returning Florida native and New England 500m Champion Ana Groff is looking to claim a place on the BIG EAST podium as well.

The freshman class should make an immediate impact in the long sprint events. One of the nation’s best high school 400 meter runners, Celina Emerson, will be a key to the success of the newcomers. The Deleware record holder in the 4x100, 4x200 and 400m should become a force come championship season. From Florida comes one of the most versatile long sprinters, Imani Sudlow. She will run from 400-800 meters and in the re-lays for the Huskies this year. Tiffany Daley will provide depth to this group and should develop to be a strong asset for Connecticut. on tHe field... The identity and success of the women’s track and field program is clear-ly a balance among both the “track” and “field” components. A look at the field group shows the significant performances of the past year along with the possibilities for this year.

Vertical Jumps With the graduation of three-time All-American and five-time BIG EAST Champion Carin Knight, the high jump should still be a consistent strong point for UConn as four jumpers look to continue to build on the pro-gram’s 12 All-America Titles of the past.

Sophomore Jasmine Cribb returns as an All-BIG EAST performer (Fifth Indoor, Fourth Outdoor), and Penn Relay record holder (College Division – 1.81m – 5’11 ½”). Newcomer Natasha McLaren shows much promise and should eventually make her way onto the national scene as well in years to come. Add senior Olga Ponomarenko and first-year jumper Ilva Bikanova to the group and “very promising” looks to be their label for this season. In the pole vault, sophomore Angelica Gilsenan and freshman Jessica Banning show encouraging development which should allow them to contribute to team points during the championship season.

Country and track and field team

Bill Morgan is in his 30th year of coaching at the University of Con-necticut and is in his seventh season as head coach of the UConn women’s cross country/track and field programs, after serving as an assistant coach for 22 years and as interim head coach in 2003-04. Morgan has been a part of all 39 track and field championships at UConn. He specializes in coaching field events and multi-events, for which he has gained a national reputation for excellence after guiding numerous UConn athletes to collegiate, national and Olym-pic Trials successes. His total of 192 conference champions includes the programs two NCAA Regional Champions, 40 ECAC, 91 New England, 61 BIG EAST titles and 28 All-American titles. Morgan’s programs have earned numerous team titles, highlighted by the recent outdoor ECAC Championship three-peat from 2008 to 2010, and three-straight indoor ECAC titles from 2007-2010 (UConn did not enter the 2009 competition). The team has earned BIG EAST Championship titles in 1986, 1995 and 2008. The Huskies have been the BIG EAST Championship runner-up a total of nine times, four in indoor and five in outdoor competition. The past four seasons have garnered the most recognition and ac-complishments in program history, as Morgan led the Huskies to numerous team records and championships. The program has con-sistently out-paced itself, year after year over the past few seasons. The 2009-10 season was another successful campaign for the Hus-kies as Morgan led the squad to its third-straight ECAC outdoor and indoor titles. UConn dominated the New England Indoor Cham-pionships for the fifth-straight year (29th overall) and the squad placed second at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships. The pro-gram celebrated eight individual BIG EAST Titles and 10 individual ECAC Titles. In honor of the incredible season, Morgan was named Northeast Region Coach of the Year for the fourth-straight season after leading sophomore Victoria Flowers and junior Trisha-Ann Hawthorne to All-America status in the weight through and the 100m dash, respectively. Hawthorne’s seventh-place finish in the outdoor 100m at the NCAA Championships garnered UConn’s first-ever NCAA Outdoor All-American. Morgan and his staff guided seven student-athletes to NCAA Qualifying marks. Coach Morgan also helped lead Hawthorne to a silver-medal finish in the 4x100m relay with Jamaica at the 2010 NACAC U-23 Championships. In 2008-09, UConn recorded its second consecutive BIG EAST In-door title as well as the ECAC Outdoor Championship crown and its 28th New England Indoor title. In combination with an outdoor BIG EAST Runner-Up trophy, the team recorded another superla-tive season. Recognized with a No. 13 indoor National ranking and its seventh place showing at the NCAA East Regional, the program placed an exclamation point to its year. Within the team context, Morgan coached Carin Knight to two more All-American titles add-ing to her remarkable career along with freshman Victoria Flowers, who earned her first All-American title as the top freshman in the country. In addition, eight athletes were named to the All-East Re-gional Team for finishing in the top five at the East Regional. Mor-gan was honored as the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Coach of the year

In 2007-08, UConn recorded three consecutive team titles, winning the BIG EAST, ECAC and New England Indoor Championships in a two week period. The BIG EAST title was the team’s first ever in-door crown after registering four runner-up trophies as a program. Morgan’s charges then captured the New England title as he was honored as the New England Indoor Coach of the Year along with freshman phenom, Trisha-Ann Hawthorne, who won the Athlete of the Meet honors. Morgan’s team continued its surge and was spectacular in win-ning the ECAC Indoor crown to defend their title from the previ-ous season, becoming only the ninth program to win in the 30-year meet history. Morgan was further acknowledged by being named the year’s NCAA Division I Northeast Region Women’s Coach of the Year. Morgan led former triple jumper, Tamara Highsmith, and high jumper, Carin Knight, to national level performances as Highsmith beat Miami’s Tabia Charles’ record at the BIG EAST Championship with a jump of 44’ 1.25”, dominated the ECAC competition and con-cluded with a seventh place finish at the national championship to become an All-American. Knight joined her with BIG EAST and New England titles while earning the All-American status with a sixth place finish in the high jump. UConn followed the indoor season with their first ECAC Outdoor title, displaying the magnitude of such a dominating year. With nine athletes continuing to the NCAA Regionals, four made the All-Re-gional Team and went on to the national championship where High-smith mirrored her indoor performance with another All-American title. The team was not finished as Knight, Highsmith and alumni Deirdre Mullen (five-time All-American), Bethany Hart (two-time All-American) and current volunteer coach, April Garner, participat-ed in the teams’ fifth consecutive Olympic Trials. Mullen climaxed a stellar season by finishing fourth (6-3.25) and positioning herself for the 2012 Trials. The brilliant season was capped with members making their respective national teams as Highsmith made the USA Under-23 team and Hawthorne made the Jamaica Junior National

team, while Phylicia George made the Under-23 Canadian team. In 2007, Morgan’s program produced its first NCAA Regional Champion in freshman high jumper Carin Knight along with four BIG EAST Champions. His team placed fourth at the BIG EAST Championships, their best outdoor finish in 12 years. The program produced 11 NCAA Regional qualifiers along with two ECAC Ath-letes of the Week in Amanda Martin and Jillian Sullivan. Again, Morgan’s team made history, marking seven new program records in their outdoor performances. Jillian Sullivan became UConn’s first ever All-American for the women’s cross country, as she picked up Academic All-American status as well. Both cross country and track and field earned All Academic teams honors after both the 2007 and 2008 seasons. During his tenure at Connecticut, Morgan has coached athletes to 27 All-American titles, the most recent being Knight and Flowers in 2009 and Flowers and Hawthorne in 2010. Morgan also coached Tamara Highsmith, Deirdre Mullen, Nicole Toney and Tamika Top-pin to the All American status. He coached Toppin in the high jump (1998 and 1999), Bethany Hart (1999 and 2000) and Wendy Berutto (1997) in the hammer throw, long jumpers Carol Galloway (1985) and Cheryl Brantle (1992), Terry Roy in 1992, 1993 and 1995, and high jumper Ronna Deffer, an NCAA National Outdoor Champion-ship finalist in 1992. In July of 2000, he accompanied Hart and Toppin to the U.S. Olym-pic Trials in Sacramento where Hart was the top collegian in the competition. The two were his fourth and fifth student-athletes to qualify for the trials. He also coached Roy, Brantle and Berutto to the U.S. Olympic Trials in Atlanta in June of 1996, Roy to the 1992

trials in New Orleans and Mullen to the trials in Sacramento, Calif. in 2004. In 2004, Mullen became his second national team member as she earned a bronze medal at the NACAC Under-23 Champion-ship in Sherbrooke, Canada. One of Morgan’s former athletes, three time All-American Terry Roy, also became the Junior Na-tional Champion in the heptathlon and participated in the World Junior Championship in Korea. Morgan continued the team’s progress toward national rec-ognition as he coached Mullen to a conference record-breaking performance in the high jump. Mullen cleared 1.83m (6’) to cap-ture first in the high jump and set a BIG EAST Championship re-cord while following that performance with a 1.88 (6-2.00) jump at the regional championship. As impressive has been alumnus Hart who became UConn’s first Winter Olympian during the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy – 3 months after competing on our USA World Team as the country’s second ranked hammer thrower in Helsinki, Finland. As interim head coach in 2003-2004, Morgan’s cross country team placed 4th of 41 teams at the New England Champion-ship for its best finish in nine years. His indoor squad captured the New England Championship while placing sixth out of 44 teams at the ECAC Championships. Morgan coached Garner to the New England and ECAC Championship in the hurdles as the season concluded with six individual conference champions, two school records and an All-American. Morgan has taken part in the USA Track and Field Women’s Junior Elite Throws Camp in San Diego as well as the USA Track and Field Women’s Elite Heptathlon Summit in Tucson, Arizona. He has also written published articles on topics related to imag-ery in sport. In 2002, Morgan was acknowledged as an AFLAC National Assistant Coach of the Year for distinguished service at the University of Connecticut. Morgan has been a part of many memorable program high-lights since taking the helm of the women’s track and field pro-gram – none more significant than his team’s status as an All-Academic Team. Continuing the decorated academic success at Connecticut, the 2009 cross country team was named a USTFC-CCA All-Academic Team for the seventh year in a row. The track team was also honored in 2010 as an All-Academic Team. Phyli-cia George (’10) and Sara Leslie (’10) were both honored as BIG EAST Scholar Athlete’s of the Year. Morgan presently resides in Coventry. He retired after 30 years of public school teaching; 29 of those in the Columbia School District as a physical education instructor. Morgan was an un-defeated track and field coach at Porter for five years, going 51-0 in dual meets. Among the many age-group athletes he has coached, Morgan developed three national champions in the shot put, discus and pentathlon. Morgan received his Bachelor of Science degree in health and physical education from Southern Connecticut State University in 1972 and his master’s degree from SCSU in the same field of study in 1973. In 1986, he received an advanced degree in sport biomechanics from UConn.

four of his athletes to qualify for the Outdoor NCAAs in their individual events. At the Re-gional meet with Terrelonge coaching five of the ten total athletes representing UConn, the program recorded its best finish in school history. Earlier that season, the Huskies won their second consecutive ECAC Championship title. Hawthorne was named ECAC Most Outstanding Performer of the Meet, while just two weeks earlier she had been dubbed BIG EAST Outdoor Championship Track Performer of the Meet. At the historic Penn Relays, the 4x200 team recorded a season-best time which eventu-ally earned them a ninth-place national ranking. The 4x100 team also met success as they became the first in program history to make the “Championship of America” final. During the indoor campaign, UConn defended its title as BIG EAST Champions as Haw-thorne won both the 60m and 200m, while Graves-Fulgham broke her own school record to claim the 400m title. In the process, both gained a berth to the NCAAs. With two champions in three events, and four athletes in the finals of the 60m dash, Terrelonge’s sprinters amassed over 50-percent of the team’s total BIG EAST points. Terrelonge and the Huskies had an outstanding year in 2008. En route to the Huskies’ first ECAC Outdoor Championship title, his sprints led the way, accounting for nearly half the Huskies’ points. At the conclusion of the season, four new school records were set. The 2008 indoor season proved to be historic as UConn pulled off the “triple crown” in the champion-ship season, winning the New England, BIG EAST and ECAC Championship titles. It was the team’s first ever BIG EAST Indoor title, their second consecutive ECAC crown and their third-straight New England Championship. At the conclusion of that season, the program was recognized by the USTFCCA with Northeast Head Coach, Assistant Coach and Field Athlete of the Year honors in Bill Morgan, Clive Terrelonge, and Tamara Highsmith, respectively. Terrelonge and the Huskies performed well during the outdoor campaign in 2007, where five of the Husky sprinters competed in the NCAA Regionals. The 2006-07 squad captured two titles during the indoor season; the ECAC and the New England Championship titles. The Huskies were third at the BIG EAST Championship, which was the highest finish in school history before the UConn victory in 2008. In recognition of his achievements, Terre-longe was named one of the United States Emerging Elite Coaches and was selected to par-ticipate in the United States Track and Field (USATF) Elite Men’s and Women’s event camps, which were held at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif. July 14-19, 2007. In 2006, Terrelonge coached fourteen athletes to New England Championship titles, and ten athletes to All-BIG EAST status. He finished the season with four athletes competing at the USA Jr. Championship most notably Graves-Fulgham who finished as a finalist in the 400m. During Terrelonge’s first year with UConn, he wasted no time in making an impact. In 2005, he led current volunteer coach, April Garner, to new and presently unbroken school records in the high hurdle events. That year she was the BIG EAST runner up in the 60 hurdles and 100 hurdles, following her ECAC indoor hurdle title from the previous year. She continues to train and compete on an international level under the leadership of Terrelonge. He coached her to the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials, 2006 and 2007 US Indoor National Championship, 60 hurdle finals, as well as multiple international competitions. Prior to coming to UConn, Terrelonge worked at Brown University and his alma mater, Lin-coln University in Pennsylvania. While at Brown, he helped guide the team to a second place finish in the Ivy League in 2004. Over the two years he served at Brown, his sprinters broke two school records that stood for over ten years in the 100, and the 110 hurdles. In 2004, Brown had its first women’s Ivy League 100m champion over six years. At Lin-coln, Terrelonge helped lead the women’s squad to a NCAA Division III Championship and produced eight All-American sprinters/hurdlers that year. During his time as an assistant coach, the men captured six NCAA indoor and outdoor titles and two runner-up trophies. The men’s sprinters also set five NCAA records and earned over sixty All-America honors. As a collegiate competing for Lincoln University, Terrelonge earned 19 Division III All-America honors in the 400m, 800m and 4x400 relay. He is a former NCAA two-time 400m champion, three-time 800m champion and still holds the 800m NCAA Division III outdoor record. He was also a World Champion and two-time Olympian for Jamaica. Terrelonge was inducted into the NCAA Division III Track and Field Hall of Fame at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championship in Waverly, Iowa on Wednesday, May 25, 2005. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in health and physical education from Lincoln in 1994. Terrelonge currently resides in Storrs, Conn.

Clive Terrelonge enters his seventh year with the University of Connecticut Huskies, and his second as Associate Head Coach. Coach Terrelonge has been recognized three years in a row for his effort in creating one of the dominate programs in the region. Terrelonge has been named USTFCCA Northeast Oudoor Assistant Coach of the Year for three straight seasons and the Indoor Assistant Coach of the Year in 2008 and 2009. He has completed six successful years as the Huskies’ sprints/hurdles coach, leading his athletes to BIG EAST and ECAC Championship titles, as well as NCAA Regional and National Championship appearances. During his short tenure, he has coached his athletes to new school records in seventeen events. The Huskies were also named a USTFCCCA All-Academic Team for their excellence in the classroom. Terrelonge has been at the forefront of developing current senior Trisha-Ann Hawthorne into the most decorated sprinter in the history of UConn track and field. Hawthorne has dominated the 100m and 200m in the BIG EAST in her three seasons, winning the outdoor title all three years and the indoor title the past two seasons. She owns school records in the short sprint events from the 55m to 200m, and is the first athlete in UConn history to qualify for the NCAA Championships in two sprint events. She is also the first track athlete to earn NCAA Outdoor All-American honors as she placed seventh in the 100m at the NCAA Championships. As a freshman in 2008, Hawthorne represented Jamaica in the 200m at the 12th IAAF World Junior Championship in Bydgoszcz, Poland. She earned a silver medal with Jamaica in the 4x100 at the NACAC U-23 National Championships in 2010. Terrelonge also helped guide 2010 graduates Phylicia George and Mandela Grave-Ful-gham to success both regionally and nationally. George competed at the 2009 Canadian World Championship Trials, and the 2008 Canadian Olympic Trials in the 100 hurdles and 200m. In 2009, she qualified for the NCAA National Championships as a part of the 4x100 relay team. During the indoor season, George set a personal best in the 60 hurdles placing her name on the record books by tying the school record. Off the track, George has received NCAA Academic All-America, and ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District First Team honors. She was also honored with the BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Award and at the NCAA Championship, she finished tied for 10th in the 60m hurdles with a anew school record. Graves-Fulgham was one of the most consistent performers for UConn over her four years. Her accolades include multiple BIG EAST, ECAC, and New England titles in her specialty, the 400m. She claimed three BIG EAST Indoor titles in the 400m from 2007-2009. Graves-Fulgham competed at the NCAA Championship in both the indoor and outdoor 400m as she holds the program record in both seasons. The UConn sprinters have been extraordinary since Terrelonge’s addition to the program. Since 2005, the title of BIG EAST Champion in the 60m and 100m has been in the sole possession of UConn sprinters Jessi Foreman and Hawthorne. The 2010 season saw another excellent year for the Huskies and Terrelonge. Once again,

Terrelonge was honored as the indoor and outdoor Northeast Region Coach of the Year. The Huskies claimed both the in-door and outdoor ECAC Championships as well as the New England Champion-ships. UConn also placed third in the BIG EAST Indoors while finishing second at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships. Hawthorne claimed seven titles overall, including four BIG EAST Championships. Hawthorne continued her success finish-ing as an NCAA Outdoor All-American in the 100m. She was crowned Athlete of the Meet at both ECAC Championships as well as the BIG EAST Outdoor Cham-pionships. The Huskies saw three sprint-ers qualify for the NCAA Championships. Hawthorne joined Graves-Fulgham, George and freshman Kristen Brown to compile the NCAA Qualifying 4x100m

relay team. In total, UConn saw nine sprinting records broken on the season. During the 2009 season, Terrelonge led

Andrea Grove-McDonough begins her third year as assistant women’s track & field and cross country coach. Responsible for cross country and the middle distance/distance events on the track, Grove-McDonough has rapidly improved the cross country program and distance corps at Connecticut. Last season, UConn was ranked as high as 10th in the USTFCCCA Northeast Regional Poll.

Grove-McDonough has also helped to continue the high standards of academic success at UConn. The 2009 cross country team was honored as a USTFCCCA All-Academic Team as 12 student-athletes were named to the BIG EAST All-Academic Team for achieving cumulative grade point averages above 3.0.

2010 graduate Sara Leslie was honored with the BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award. The award is given to one student-athlete in each BIG EAST sport based on academic credentials, athletic accolades or perfor-mances and volunteer service to the community. Student-athletes who attained junior academic standing and a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 are eligible. The winners are chosen by the BIG EAST Faculty Athletics Representative Council.

In 2009-10, Grove-McDonough once again led the distance runners to several new school records. In a clear display of the depth and talent of the distance runners, eight student-athletes broke or re-broke 13 records last season in events ranging from the 800m to the 5,000. Leah Andrianos set a pair of individual UConn records in the indoor 1,000m (2.47.41) and the mile (4.49.96). Andrianos joined with Brigitte Mania, Meghan Cunningham and Heather Wilson to set a new 4x800m record with a time of 8:41.38. The four student-athletes also set a new outdoor record in the 4x800 with a time of 8:41.78, which also ranked the team ninth in the nation. Cunningham set a new outdoor record in 2010 in the 1,500m with a time of 4:28.61. Grove-McDonough also led three athletes to qualify for the 2009 and 2010 Junior National Championships.

During the most recent cross country campaign, Coach Grove-McDonough’s squad made dramatic improvements in the New England and BIG EAST rank-ings. The team finished second at the 2010 New England Championships and seventh at the BIG EAST Championships, both performances were the highest

finishes in program history. Grove-McDonough guided freshman Lauren Sara to a top-five finish among all freshmen in the BIG EAST Conference.

Before beginning her coaching career at UConn, Grove-McDonough enjoyed a highly successful professional career in which she won two National Titles and competed internationally in every event from the 800m to the 10,000m. In 2008 Grove-McDonough won the Canadian Olympic Trials in the 10,000m and posted the seventh fastest time in Canadian history in the event. During her twelve years as a professional athlete, Grove-McDonough was a seven time National Team Member, a finalist in the 1,500m at the 1999 World University Games in Palma de Mallorca, Spain and was selected to represent Canada at the 2008 Chiba Ekiden relay in Japan. She also finished ninth at the 2007 Canadian World Cross Country Trials.

Grove-McDonough has garnered an impressive record of six top-three finishes at the Canadian National Championships. She was ranked second in Canada in the 5,000m in 2002, 2006 and 2007 as well as being the No. 1-ranked 10,000m runner in 2008. She holds personal bests of 2:07.12 for 800m, 4:11.04 for 1,500m, 15:31.29 for 5,000m and 32:29.86 in the 10,000m.

Grove-McDonough was also a standout performer throughout her col-legiate career at the University of Minnesota, culminating with a fifth place finish in the 1,500m at the 1996 NCAA Outdoor Championships, where she earned All-American status. She also represented the University of Minnesota in the mile at the 1995 Indoor NCAA Championships. Grove-McDonough was a captain for the Gophers from 1994-1996 and an All-Big Ten Academic Selection. She holds a degree from the University of Minnesota in Human Resource Management.

Grove-McDonough returned to the collegiate scene in 2007 when she helped coach the men’s and women’s cross country squads at the University of Montana. She began coaching and managing elite-level athletes in the mid-dle and long distance events beginning in 2006, including coaching an athlete that represented Canada at the 2008 World Cross Country Championships in Ireland.

A native of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Grove-McDonough lived in Missoula, Montana for twelve years and now resides in Mansfield, Conn. with her husband, former All-American decathlete, Troy McDonough.

petition, placing just seven points behind Louisville in second place. With the results from last season, the Huskies have finished fourth or higher in eight-straight BIG EAST Championship meets dating back to 2007.

indoor Along with the New England and ECAC Championships, the Hus-kies laid claim to numerous individual awards and honors. Coach Morgan was named Northeast Region Coach of the Year for the third-straight season. Junior Trisha-Ann Hawthorne put herself further atop the UConn record book as she was named ECAC and BIG EAST Athlete of the Meet. Hawthorne won the 60m and 200m BIG EAST Championships for the second-straight season along with her second-straight 200m ECAC Title. She qualified in the 60m and 200m for the NCAA Championships and set new school records in both events. Victoria Flowers continued to establish herself as one of the most dominant throwers in the nation as she placed second at the NCAA Championships in the weight throw. She set a new personal best in three straight throws at the NCAAs culminating with a new school record in her third attempt with a toss of 21.44m. Three other UConn athletes competed at the NCAA Championships during the indoor season. Senior Carin Knight concluded her incred-ible career (three-time All-American) with a 12th-place showing in the high jump. Senior Phylicia George finished in 11th place in the pre-liminaries of the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.24. Her run broke her own school record. Hawthorne performed in both the 60m and 200m at the NCAA Indoor Championships. The junior sprinter placed 12th in the 60m dash and 16th in the 200m. The BIG EAST Championships saw UConn set five school records and claim three individual titles en route to a third-place finish with 84 points, 21 behind the champions Villanova. Carin Knight also took home the title in the high jump. Including Hawthorne, UConn celebrated 12 personal records in events ranging from the 60m to the 4x800m relay. The ECAC’s produced another UConn championship with the Hus-kies taking six titles in the two days of competition. While veteran champions Trisha-Ann Hawthorne (200m) and Tynisha McMillian (shot put) continued their dominance in the northeast region, the Huskies saw several student-athletes earn their first ECAC Titles. Senior Phylicia George took the crown in the 60m, junior Leah Andrianos claimed gold in the 1,000m with a new school record and freshman Kristen Brown took the long jump with a personal best. The victory gave the Huskies their third ECAC Indoor Championship in the last four seasons. Hawthorne was also named ECAC Athlete of the Meet for her performance.

outdoor The Huskies carried the indoor success over to the outdoor track in 2010. UConn’s coaching staff was recognized for its excellence once again as Head Coach William Morgan and Associate Head Coach Clive Terrelonge were named Northeast Region Coach of the Year and Assistant Coach of the Year, respectively. Connecticut celebrated its first outdoor track All-American in 2010 as Trisha-Ann Hawthorne placed seventh at the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore. While the Huskies have garnered 27 All-American Honors in the programs history, Hawthorne became the first runner to achieve the prestigious award on the track. Hawthorne continued to represent the University of Connecticut throughout the summer when she competed with Jamaica on the international circuit. The junior sprinter anchored the Jamaica U23 4x100 meter relay to a silver-medal finish on Sunday afternoon at the NACAC Under 23 Championships in Miramar, Fla. She also com-peted in the 100m and placed fifth overall with a time of 11.53.

2009 Cross Country The UConn women’s cross country team took another step towards becoming a consistent factor in the competitive BIG EAST land-scape this past season. In Head Coach Andrea Grove-McDonough’s second year at the helm of the cross country program, after some early-season success, the Huskies entered the championship season and improved on the finishes from every 2008 race. The marked im-provement came based on the legs of the underclassmen as freshmen and sophomores led in all but one race in 2009. UConn closed out the year with a 16th-place showing at the NCAA Regionals, up from 18th the year before. Freshman Shauna McNiff led the way, placing 64th overall. The 16th-place showing was a gradual improvement on the heels of UConn’s 10th-place finish at the BIG EAST Championships. The BIG EAST Conference proved to be the most dominant confer-ence in the nation in 2009, led by the eventual National Champions Villanova. The Huskies saw an impressive performance from fresh-man Megan Jacoby as she placed 54th to lead all UConn runners. Fellow underclassmen rounded out the top-four with Christine Vogel (So.), McNiff (Fr.) and Kimberly Moran (Fr.). The New England Championships saw similar results and improve-ments as UConn moved up from 25th in 2008 to 14th in 2009. The New England Championships was the lone race in which the under-classmen gave way to a veteran. Senior Sara Leslie led the Huskies to its top finish in three years with a 43rd-place individual showing. The underclassmen dominated the results through the season, claiming the top spot in all but one race for the Huskies. Sopho-more Courtney Dinnan claimed the top spot for the Huskies in three straight meets to start the season.

2009-10 track & field The UConn women’s track and field team had a successful season on the track and most importantly in the classroom. Once again, the Huskies were named a Division I All-Academic Team. The award is presented to teams that generate a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0. The program celebrated a successful athletic season along with another banner year in academics. While the regional dominance continued for the Connecticut wom-en’s track and field team, the Huskies took strides towards increasing their impact at the national level as nine athletes qualified for the NCAA Championships. Junior Trisha-Ann Hawthorne and sopho-more Victoria Flowers led the way, earning All-America Honors in the 100m and the weight throw, respectively. Hawthorne placed sixth overall while Flowers placed second in the nation. Freshman Emma Crowcroft established herself on the national scene as well, placing 16th in the javelin to lead all freshmen. Connecticut helped to continue its regional dominance in track and field in 2009-10 by claiming the ECAC Title in both the indoor and outdoor seasons. UConn has dominated the ECAC’s over the past four seasons, owning three-straight outdoor titles and three of the past four indoor titles (UConn did not compete in 2009). The Hus-kies have not lost at the ECAC Championships since 2006. The Hus-kies also claimed their fifth-straight New England Championship. Compared to the high standards established by Coach William Morgan and Associate Head Coach Clive Terrelonge, the Huskies faltered a bit at the BIG EAST Championships. Although the Hus-kies claimed six individual and relay titles at the BIG EAST Indoor Championship, UConn placed third as a team after laying claim to the titles in 2008 and 2009. The BIG EAST Outdoor Championship saw similar results as UConn took three individual titles only to fall just short in the team com-

Along with Hawthorne, UConn had four other NCAA Quali-fiers. George and Graves-Fulgham joined with Hawthorne and freshman Kristen Brown to make up the 4x100m relay team which placed 15th in the preliminaries. Emma Crowcroft also reached the NCAA Championships. She placed 16th in the jav-elin to finish as the top freshman in the nation. Graves-Fulgham competed in her specialty, the 400m, and placed 12th in the semifinals. As a team, the Huskies continued their success at the ECAC’s, claiming the title for the third consecutive season. UConn won the title in dominant fashion in 2010, scoring 105 points to second-place Columbia’s 54. In the process, Hawthorne was named Athlete of the Meet after claiming the title in the 100m, 200m and the 4x100m all for the third consecutive season. The 4x100m relay team set a new meet record with a time of 44.43. Connecticut also saw victories in the 4x800m relay (Leah Andria-nos, Meghan Cunningham, Heather Wilson and Brigitte Mania), Graves-Fulgham in the 400, Carin Knight in the high jump and Crowcroft in the javelin. For the second year in a row, the women’s track and field team was in striking distance of a BIG EAST Championship, but fell just seven points short with 101 as Louisville claimed the title with 108 points. UConn has taken second place in back-to-back years at the BIG EAST Championship. Once again, Hawthorne was named Athlete of the Meet as she claimed gold in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay. All three times set new marks at Gettler Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio. Hawthorne joined with Graves-Fulgham, Brown and sophomore Danielle Lyte in the relay. Graves-Fulgham won her 400m out-door title while the Huskies claimed both the long jump (Whit-ney Holder) and the high jump (Carin Knight). Knight’s leap of 1.84 set a new BIG EAST Championship record.

in the Classroom The University of Connecticut women’s track and field and cross country teams have been a success not only in competition, but in the classroom as well. The cross country team has been named an NCAA Division I All-Academic team for the past six years, while the track team has earned that distinction for the past four. The main criteria for the award is that the cumula-tive grade point average for all student-athletes for indoor and/or outdoor track and cross country must be 3.00 or higher. Last year Phylicia George and Sara Leslie were named BIG EAST Scholar-Ahlete Sport Excellence Award winners. The awards are given to one student-athlete in each BIG EAST sport based on academic credentials, athletic accolades or performances and volunteer service to the community. The Huskies had 28 team members acknowledged on the BIG EAST All-Academic team for achieving a 3.0 or higher for the 2009-10 academic year. In 2008, George was one of 10 individuals chosen for the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District First Team. In 2007 former UConn distance standout, Jillian Sullivan, earned Third Team Aca-demic All-America honors by ESPN The Magazine as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of American (CoSIDA). The program attributes its success to its work ethic and sup-port staff. The team devised a plan to help enhance academic per-formance and promote team unity through organized learning groups. The plan is flexible, low-impact and positive. All historical feedback from programs like this have indicated it is successful at achieving the objective set forth. Also helping to achieve the team’s objective are its support staff, including John Miceli of the Counseling Program for Intercollegiate Athletes. CPIA is a unit within the Division of Academic Affairs with the primary goal of assisting student-athletes in reaching their educational goals while they compete in intercollegiate athletics. As academic affairs officers, CPIA counselors function as liaisons between the athletic and academic communities. Counselors work closely with coaches, faculty and a variety of campus resources in order to help facilitate students’ successful transition into college life by instituting academic and social support programs, including, but not limited to, Counseling, Pre-Advising, Tutorial and Life Skills Programs.

in the Community The University of Connecticut Division of Athletics believes that the responsibilities of

student-athletes reach beyond classrooms, libraries, fields and courts. Community ser-vice is an integral part of the UConn experience, as Husky student-athletes contribute countless hours each year to a number of worthy causes. The women’s track team has also started a charitable initiative amongst the team for the 2009-10 season. Each month, student-athletes from the program can give a pre-sentation to their coaches and teammates for a specific charity that has affected their lives. Each month, the staff and program donate to a pair of charities chosen by the student-athletes. The women’s track and field/cross country teams have been active in several commu-nity service activities, including working a drive in conjunction with the American Red Cross that raised a total of $30,000 for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. The team has also been individually recognized for its efforts as Leah Williams, a 2006 graduate and former UConn volunteeer coach, was chosen to represent UConn at the 2005 NCAA Leadership Conference. Each school is permitted to send one repre-sentative to the event. Williams now works with HuskySport at UConn, working with student-athletes in the local Hartford communities. The NCAA Leadership Conference provides NCAA student-athletes with a forum to openly discuss issues that may affect them on their campuses and in their communi-ties, while also providing them with the opportunity to enhance their leadership, com-munication, decision-making and problem-solving skills. The leadership conference also promotes better communication among student-athletes, coaches, administrators, faculty and communities. The five-day conference consists of daily exercises and activi-ties to help the student-athletes develop as individuals and as contributing members to a group. The conference is an outreach of the NCAA’s highly-successful CHAMPS/Life Skills Program. Criteria for selection include the student-athletes’ demonstrated ability and strong desire to be a leader and the student-athletes’ potential to benefit significantly from a leadership development experience. In order to be eligible for the conference, the student-athletes must be in good academic standing, and must have athletic eligibility remaining for the following academic year.

STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING The strength and conditioning program for University of Connecticut is under the supervision of UConn Strength and Conditioning Coordinator Jerry Martin. The Strength and Conditioning staff services all 24 of Connecticut’s intercollegiate teams. UConn track members have the use of two different weight rooms in the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion and the newly remodeled Hugh S. Greer Field House. In all, there are over 8,000 square feet of weight training facilities available for all UConn student-athletes. The weight room in the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion is a free weight facility and supplies the Husky student-athletes areas in which to perform their power and Olympic lifts. The facility in the Greer Field House is fitted with more free weights in which the UConn track athletes can incorporate circuit training, speed training and heavy negative workouts into their total strength-training program. Maureen Butler has been the strength and conditioning coach for the women’s track and field program for the past four seasons. Butler graduated from the University of Connecticut in 2003 with a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology. She continued her studies and attended UConn again this time graduating with a master’s degree in exercise physiology. Butler is a certified strength and conditioning specialist as well as a certified level one coach for United States weightlifting and track and field. She spreads her time around while at the university working with men’s and women’s ice hockey and men’s and women’s track and field and cross country.

Butler also spends her free time working with the USA Hockey under-18 women’s national team.

ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPORT Mary Ryan is in her 27th year of working in the UConn Division of Athletics as she oversees and helps with the day to day operations of the women’s track and field/cross country program. In her tenure at Connecticut, Ryan has worked for a variety of UConn’s other successful athletic programs, including baseball, volleyball, football, field hockey, ice hockey, men’s track and men’s and women’s swimming. Before joining the athletic department, Ryan worked for three years in the College of Agriculture at Connecticut.

SPORTS MEDICINEThe department of Sports Medicine in the University of Connecticut Division of Athletics works as an integrated multidisciplinary team whose purpose is to

provide the optimal, safe environment for the track student-athletes to train and participate in their sport. The staff takes great pride in the individual attention paid to each student-athlete. They are devoted to preventing injury, rapidly diagnosing and treating injury, and maximizing athletic performance. The disciplines of athletic training, strength and conditioning, sports medicine, orthopaedic sports medicine, optometry, nutrition, exercise physiology, and psychology work in concert to provide comprehensive care for the student-athlete.

Physician coverage is provided by Jeffrey Anderson, M.D., the Director of Sports Medicine and Team Physician Thomas Trojian, M.D. The Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Specialists for the team include Edward Collins, M.D. of the Connecticut Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center in Willimantic, Dr. Michael Joyce of the Orthopedic Sports Specialists in Glastonbury, Barry Messinger, M.D. of Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Surgery in Manchester and Robert Arciero, M.D. of the University of Connecticut Health Center Department of Orthopaedics in Farmington.

Behind the scences are two individuals who regularly contribute to the success of the women’s track and field and cross country teams as Patti Kula is the primary athletic trainer program, while Rory Deer is the team’s massage therapist. Deer, a UConn graduate, is in his fourth season with the program as he brings the necessary techniques to the team for their preparation of training for the major national championships.

The Department of Sports Medicine works intimately with the Departments of Kinesiology and Nutritional Sciences on the University of Connecticut campus. This affords the student-athletes with the input of several nationally recognized exercise scientists. This cooperation also keeps the sports medicine staff at the cutting edge of developments in the fields of human performance and sports nutrition. Members of the sports medicine staff are actively engaged in research that directly benefits the care of all student-athletes. The Department of Sports Medicine at the University of Connecticut plays a critical role in assuring that all UConn student-athletes have 24-hour access to the finest medical support and quality health care possible. Through patient care and ongoing research and education, the department continues to provide Husky teams a competitive edge from the medical perspective.

ACADEMIC SUPPORT The University of Connecticut’s Counseling Program for Intercollegiate Athletes (CPIA) was established in 1986 to provide comprehensive holistic support to all UConn student-athletes. CPIA’s staff includes a director, eight full time counselors, four graduate assistants and an extensive complement of tutors. The program boasts a recently expanded computerized writing lab with access to the internet as well as the reference tools of the Homer Babbidge Library. CPIA also provides laptop computers for team use during travel to away games. Individual tutors in all subjects are readily available to student-athletes upon their request. A CPIA counselor is assigned to each intercollegiate team. He or she monitors student-athlete academic performance; provides academic, career, and personal counseling while also making appropriate referrals to other University support programs including Career Services, Counseling Services, and the University Program for the Learning Disabled; facilitates, in consort with faculty and staff advisors, registration in courses that accommodate practice times while optimizing progress toward a degree; coordinates tutor requests and assignment; and assists in the development of learning and time management skills. John Miceli serves as the team’s academic counselor, working with head coach Bill Morgan to create a nurturing environment in which each individual team member can grow personally, academically and athletically. He travels with the team, providing continuous academic support and often proctoring exams on the road, attends practices and is available in the CPIA office daily for individual consultation. A 1974 U.S. Coast Guard Academy graduate, Miceli co-captained the soccer team there and was a New England-ranked hurdler. Miceli holds a Master’s degree in counseling from Northeastern University and a Sixth Year Professional Diploma in sport studies/sport psychology from UConn. He is
