TheBoardofTrusteesofLees-McRaeCollegeannouncedtheappointment,ef-fectiveJune1,2010,ofBarryM.Buxtonas president of Lees-McRae College inBannerElk,NorthCarolina.Dr.Buxtonof-

ficiallybecamethefifteenthpresident inthe110-yearhistoryofthefour-yearliberalartscollegeduringtheinaugurationceremonyonOc-tober2,2010.

Before coming to Lees-McRae College, Buxton most recentlyservedasVicePresidentforSpecialProjectsattheSavannahCollegeofArtandDesign,wherehewasresponsibleformajorgiftsolicitation,leadershipdevelopment,andfoundationrelations.Healsoservedasexecutive liaison to the Savannah, Atlanta, and European Boards ofVisitors.

AnativeofBlowingRock,NorthCarolina,Dr.Buxtonhasalonghis-toryofinvolvementwithnon-profitorganizationsinAppalachia.Dur-ing thedecadeof the1980s,heservedasExecutiveDirectorof thesixteen-memberAppalachianConsortium.Inthiscapacity,heworkedwith faculty on research projects, scholarly conferences, and pub-lications related toAppalachia. In 1987,he receivedadistinguishedserviceawardfromtheBlueRidgeParkwayinrecognitionofthehis-toricstudiesheconductedofMabryMill,MosesH.ConeEstate,DaveyFarm,andBrinegarCabin.

Dr.BuxtonhasservedaspresidentofscienceandhistorymuseumsinNorthCarolina,Texas,andGeorgia.InHouston,heworkedwithfor-merPresidentandFirstLadyGeorgeandBarbaraBushandtheHarrisCountyMedicalSocietytoestablishtheMuseumofHealthandMedi-calScience.HewasvicepresidentoftheNorthCarolinaGrassRootsScienceMuseumsandaco-founderoftheHoustonMuseumDistrictAssociation.

Anaward-winningauthorwhohaswrittenandeditedoveradozenbooks,hiscentennialhistoryofBlowingRock,AVillageTapestry,wasrecognizedasthebestlocalhistorybookinNorthCarolinain1989.

Inadiversecareerspanning35years,hehasbeenateacher,re-searcher,publisher,editor,andcommunityleaderwithextensiveinter-nationalexperience.Hehasservedasaconsultanttosuchdiverseor-ganizationsastheHowardHughesMedicalInstitute,TennesseeStateBoardofRegents,NationalEndowmentfortheHumanities,andTexasA&MUniversity.Dr.Buxton is apastmemberof theNorthCarolinaHumanitiesCouncilandtheNebraskaHumanitiesCouncil.

Buxton holds two degrees from Appalachian State University,wherehereceivedhisteachercertificationandwasanE.F.LovillFel-low.HisPh.D.isfromtheUniversityofNebraska,andhisdissertationwastitled“JobSatisfactionofCollegeandUniversityPresidents.”

Throughouthiscareer,Dr.Buxtonhasreceivedhighmarksforroll-inguphissleevesandgettinginvolvedincommunityprojects.Hewasthefirstnon-hospitalityprofessional tobechosentoserveasChair-manofSavannah’spowerfulConventionandVisitorsBureau.HewasalsoamemberoftheChamberofCommerceexecutivecommitteeandservedon theboardsofBethesdaHome forBoys,YMCA, the LucasTheatre,Historic SavannahFoundation,and theSavannahEconomicDevelopmentAuthority.InNorthCarolina,hewasstatewideChairmanofProjectAssist(asmokingcessationinitiative),andaboardmemberofUnitedWayandtheAshevilleChamberofCommerce.

Dr.BuxtonismarriedtoartistDeborahKeyesBuxtonandtheyhavetwosons:Loren,atechnologyexecutiveinNebraska,andPeter,wholivesinNewYorkCityandworksintelevisionandcommercialproduc-tion.Dr.Buxton’s avocational interests include tennis, bicycling, andlandscapearchitecture.

Craig McPhail is in his second yearas Director of Athletics at Lees-McRaeCollege.McPhailoverseesallday-to-dayoperations of the Lees-McRae athleticdepartment and the 18 sports the col-

legesponsors.Inhisfirstyeartheathleticteamshadgreatsuccesswiththemen’s

soccerprogramcompeting for theNationalChampionship,women’svolleyball,men’sandwomen’scrosscountry,men’stennisandmen’strackandfieldreachingtheNCAADivisionIItournaments.

TheBobcatssuccessonthefieldrivaledwhattheydidintheclass-roomas159student-athletesmadethePresidentialHonorRollforath-letics,thesecondmostinConferenceCarolinas.

Severalkeyareaswereimprovedinhisfirstyearasthedepartmentreceivedafull-timeNCAADirectorofCompliance,addedbannerstothegymdocumentingthedepartmentsNCAAsuccess,upholsteryofweightroomequipmentcompletewithsignageandbanners,windowdecals,paintingoffrontentrywayandasphaltsealcoating.

Renovatedsoftballfacilities,outdoortenniscomplex,pressbox,re-introductionoftheHallofFameandaBobcatClubhaveeachbeenapartofhisshorttimeatthehelm.

McPhail previously served as the assistant athletic director atLees-McRae,workingwithcommunityserviceprojects,managingtheawardsbanquets,handlingthepublicityandmarketingoftheathleticdepartment and monitoring the overall experience of the student-athletesatLees-McRae.HehasservedonseveralcommitteeswithintheCollegeforretention, judicialreview,graduationandcommunityservice.

HehasalsorepresentedtheCollegeasamemberofCoSIDA,Unit-ed States Cross Country/Track Coaches Association, USA Track andField,ConferenceCarolinasChairforbothcrosscountryandtrackandfieldandrecentlyfinishedhisappointmentasChairoftheNCAADivi-sionIICrossCountry/TrackandFieldCommittee.

AstheHeadMen’sandWomen’sCrossCountryCoachfor11years,histeamshadgreatsuccessinandoutoftheclassroomwith13con-ferencechampionships inmen’sandwomen’scrosscountry,aswellastrackandfield,aprogramwhosere-instatementhewasanintegralpartof.Hehascoached73all-Conferencestudent-athletes,31ofthosegainingall-Regionhonors,whilewatchingthemreceiveAcademicAll-Americahonorsforthepastdecade.

McPhail’s peers have voted him Conference Coach of the Year11times,andhehasalsogarneredRegionalCoachoftheYearthreetimes.Additionally,hehasguided38Lees-McRaestudent-athletestoNCAADivisionIINationalChampionships.

McPhail’stimeinthecommunityhasbeenwellservedwithnumer-ousorganizations,includingthelocalYoungLifeorganization,theSpe-cialOlympicstorchrun,theBannerElkChristianFellowshipChurch,aswellasaLees-McRaeMountainDayathleticcoordinator,WoolyWormRoadRaceOrganizer,TurkeyTrotOrganizer,andasacaddyatDiamondCreekGolfClub.

He graduated fromWinthrop University with a degree in MassCommunications (Journalism) and minor Interpersonal Speech.McPhailalsohasaMaster’sdegreeinSportManagementfromGeor-giaSouthernUniversity.

McPhailismarriedtotheformerJillClawson.Theyaretheproudparentsofone-montholdsonElijahBoggsMcPhail.

ScottPolsgroveisinhisfifthyearastheHeadMen’sBasketballCoachatLees-McRae.Polsgrovehassteppedin,rebuildingtheprogramfromthegroundupemphasizingexcellenceinallareas:character,at-titude,workethic,teamworkandacademics.

Nostrangertocollegebasketballinthesoutheast,PolsgrovemostrecentlyservedasheadbasketballcoachforfourteenyearsatnearbyKingCollegeinBristol,Tenn.DuringhistimeatKing,hewasalsoAth-leticDirectorfrom2000-04andAssociateAthleticDirectorfrom2004-2006.

Polsgrove’scollegiatebasketballcareerbeganasaplayerforNAIApowerhouseTaylorUniversityinIndiana.Playingonthreedistrictchampionshipteams,PolsgrovehelpedguidehisteamstothreeNAIANationalTournamentswhileearninghisBachelorofSciencedegreeinBusinessin1987.

Followinghisplayingcareer,heimmediatelyjumpedintocoachingasaGraduateAssistantatMobileCollegeinAlabama.WhileatMobile,Polsgrovewasinchargeofrecruitingandscoutingaswellashisonfloorcoachingresponsibilities.

AddinganotherNAIAdistrictchampionshiptohiscreditduringhisthreeyearstayatMobile,PolsgroveandagainfoundhimselfintheNAIANationalTournament,thistimeonthesidelinesasacoach.PolsgrovealsoearnedhisMasterofArtsdegreeinEducationwithanemphasisinPhysicalEducationfromMobilein1990.

AfterhelpingtoestablishMobileasanNAIAcontender,Polsgrovecouldnotpassuptheopportunitytore-unitewithhiscollegecoachPaulPatterson,anNAIAHallofFamerwithover600collegiatewinstohiscredit,andreturnedtohisalmamater.

BackatTaylor,PolsgrovewasPatterson’stopassistant,supportinginallaspectsoftheprogramincludingrecruiting,scoutinganddaytodayoperations,whilehelpingguidetheteamtoa34-4recordin1991andatriptotheNAIAFinalFour.PolsgrovewasalsoaparttimefacultymemberatTaylorteachingfitnessandactivitycourses.

AfteryetanothertriptotheNationalTournamentin1992,andreceivingPatterson’smentoringforatotalofsixyears,fourasaplayer,andtwoasacoach,PolsgrovewasreadytotakethenextstepinhiscareerandbecameHeadCoachatKingcollegeinAugustof1992.

WhileatKing,PolsgroveearnedbacktobackTennessee-VirginiaAthleticConferenceCoachoftheYearhonorsin1996-97and1997-98.KingearnedtwoconferencechampionshipgameappearancesunderPolsgrove,winningtheTVACtitle in1997-98andearningatriptotheNAIANationalTournament.Kingalsofinishedrunner-upin2003-04aspartoftheAppalachianConference,qualifyingfortheNAIATournamentforthesecondtimeinPolsgrove’stenure.

Polsgrove’steamsexperiencedsuccessbothonandoffthefloorduringhistenureatKingashecoachedthreeAcademicAll-Americans,andhadninety-sixpercentofhisstudent-athletesgraduateattheconclusionoftheirfouryearsincollege.HisstaffatKingalsoprosperedwithPolsgroveasaheadcoach,withsevenofhisformerassistantsnowservingasheadcoachesinthecollegiateandhighschoolranks.

Polsgroveleadershipandknowledgeinbasketballhasalsoledhimtobecomeveryinvolvedwiththeadministrationsideofthegame.Mostrecently,heservedasPresidentoftheNAIA-NABCPresidentin2006afterservingonthecommitteeasanOfficerfrom2002-2005.

PolsgrovealsoservedontheNAIADivisionIIAllAmericanandNationalTournamentCommitteesfrom1999-2003,andin2006.In2002and2003hewasChairmanoftheNAIATournamentCommittee.PolsgroveisalsocurrentlyamemberoftheFellowshipofChristianAthletesBoardandcoachesatvariousFCAcampsthroughoutthesummer.

PolsgroveandhiswifeKimberlyof22yearsaretheproudparentsofsixchildren;Mark(18),Ty(15),Kylie(13),Kara(12),Ryan(10),andDrew(9),andresideinBannerElk.

SteveHardinisinhisfirstseasonastheassistantmen’sbasketballcoachatLees-McRaeCollege.Hardinassistswithallaspectsoftheprogram,includingrecruiting,gamepreparation,andpracticeplanning.

HardinjoinstheBobcatsfollowingasuccessfulstintatBluefieldCollegeinBluefield,Va.astheheadwomen’sbasketballcoach.Duringhisthree-yeartenureatBluefield,HardinearnedAppalachianAthleticConferenceCoachoftheYearhonorswhile leadingtheRamstotheirhighestfinish intheAACstandings,asBluefieldearnedthethirdseed intheconferencetournamentin2010.

UnderHardin’sleadership,theRamsalsoearnedtheprogram’sfirstAACChampionsofCharacterawardin2010,whileholdingaNo.3rankingintheNCCAAthroughouttheseasonandearningtheschool’sfirst-everberthintheNCCAATourna-

ment.Duringthe2009-2010season,theRamsalsopostedthebestrecordinprogramhistorywitha23-11overallmark.DuringhistenureatBluefieldwiththemen’sbasketballprogram,HardinplayedanintegralroleinthreeNAIATournamentrunswithasquadthat

postedacombined65-34recordoverthatspan,includinga42-19markinAACplay.Priortohisappointmentastheheadwomen’scoachatBluefield,Hardinservedastheassociateheadmen’sbasketballcoach,juniorvarsitybasketball

coach,andheadmen’sgolfcoachattheBluefield,Va.schoolfrom2005-2008.HardinhasworkedwithLMCheadcoachScottPolsgrovebefore,servingasanassistantmen’sbasketballcoachatKingCollegeduringPolsgrove’stenureattheBristol,Tenn.school.

HardinplayedatNCAADivisionITennesseeTechnologicalUniversityforthreeyearspriortoenteringthecoachingranksasastudentassistantduringhissenioryearwiththeGoldenEagles.WhileatTennesseeTech,Hardinwasanintegralpartofback-to-backOhioValleyConferencechampionshipsquadsandaquarterfinalfinishintheNIT.DuringHardin’scareer,theGoldenEaglesposteda47-16overallrecordanda28-4markintheOVC.

Hardinisfollowinginthefootstepsofhisfather,TonyHardin,whohasbeenahighschoolcoachinElizabethton,Tenn.forover30years.PriortohisenrollmentatTennesseeTech,Hardinservedasanassistantcoachwithhisfather,whoownsacareerrecordof489-270.

HardinismarriedtotheformerTanikaAndrews,ateacherinJohnsonCity,Tenn.Theyaretheproudparentsofone-year-olddaughterLylaGailHardin.

GordonPolsgrovebringsover35yearsofcoachingexperiencetotheBobcatsbasketballprogram,18ofthoseyearsasheadcoach.

AnativeofIndiana,Polsgrovespent23yearscoachinginthepublicschoolsinSouthBend,alongwithtenyearsintheCatholicSchoolsystem.Hisexperiencerangesfromjuniorhighschool,freshman,juniorvarsity,andvarsityteamsaswellasfiveyearsonthesidelinesatKingCollegewithsonandcurrentBobcatsHeadCoachScott.In1998,whilestillcoachinginIndiana,theelderPolsgrovewasnamedMetroCoachoftheYear.

UponreturningtotheUnitedStatesfollowinghisserviceinthemilitaryoverseas,Polsgrovebeganatenyearstintwork-ingwithYouthForChrist,ayouthministryinhishomestate.AfteradecadewithYFC,PolsgrovetaughtHistoryandGovern-

mentfor31years,beforejoininghissonatKingCollege.“IhavewatchedScottgrowuponandaroundthebasketballcourt,”commentedPolsgrove.“Theopportunitytobeonthesidelineswithhimnowis

suchablessing,andagreatwaytobringmyowncoachingcareertoaclose.”Polsgrovecelebrated50yearsofmarriagetohiswifeJudythispastsummerandhasthreeotherchildrenbesidesScott,anotherboyandtwogirls.He

DuringhisundergraduateyearsatTampa,Noblecovered13ofUT’s16athleticteamsinvariouscapacities,servingastheprimarycontactformen’ssoccerin2006and2007,aswellasbaseballin2008.WhileatTampa,hehelpedwriteanddesignseveralmediaguidesforsoccer,baseball,basketball,andvolleyball,aswellasbeingtheprimarydesignerofthe2008baseballmediaguide.

The2006TampaMen’sSoccerGuide,whichhehelpedproduce,wasselectedthirdinthenation(DivisionB)bytheCollegeSportsInformationDirectorsofAmerica(CoSIDA).

Noblebringsatremendousamountofchampionshipexperiencewithhim,havingbeenanintegralpartofthesportsinformationstaffatanumberofNCAATournamenteventsthroughouthiscareer,includingservingastheprimarystatisticianandmediacontactforthe2008NCAADivisionIISoutheastRegionMen’sSoc-cerTournament,whichwashostedbyTusculum.

In2007-08,healsoservedonthestatisticsstafffortheNCAADivisionIIISoccerNationalChampionshipinOrlando,Fla.andtheD-IISouthRegionalBaseballTournament,hostedbyTampa.In2007,healsoworkedwithESPNwiththeArenaFootballPlayoffsinTampa.

Mission

APresbyterian-affiliatedinstitutionfoundedin1900toservetheeducational needs of the Southern Appalachian region, Lees-McRaeCollegecontinuestoprovideaquality,values-basededu-cationinanecumenicalenvironment, inspiringandenabling in-dividuals to contribute to a changing societywith integrity andcivicresponsibility.Throughacurriculumrootedinaliberalartscore and emphasizing leadership and service, graduates obtainknowledge,skills,andaholisticunderstandingofthemselvesandtheworld.

CollegeHistory

“Banner’sElk,”asthevillagewasoncecalled,issaidtohavebeensettledaround1850.Bytheendofthecentury,thePresbyterianChurchwasbecomingestablishedintheareaandinthesummerof1895ConcordPresbyterysentayoungstudentfromUnionTheologicalSeminaryinVirginiatoorganizeachurchatBannerElk.In1897,newlyordained,theReverendEdgarTuftsreturnedaspastorofthechurchandremainedtoservethecommunityuntilhisdeathin1923.

Inthewinterof1899,concernedwiththelimitedofferingofthedistrictschoolwhichwassupplementedonlybysummerschoolworkconductedbythechurch,Mr.Tuftstooksomeoftheyoungpeopleoftheneighborhoodintohisstudyforfurtherinstruction.Thissmallgroup,calledtheClassof1900,marksthebeginningofLees-McRaeCollege.

Mr.Tuftssaw,however,thatthiseffortwasnotenoughandthattherewasaneedforaboardingschool,especiallyforthegirlsofthemountainregion.Asmallamountofmoneywasraisedataprayermeetingandthepromiseoflumberandlabormadepossibletheopeningin1900ofaframedormitoryforfourteengirlsandoneteacher.OneofthesummerschoolteacherswasElizabethA.McRae,originallyofSouthCarolina,whohadbeensenttoBannerElkbyFayettevillePresbytery.Knowingthedevotedcharacterofherwork,Mr.Tufts,namedtheinstituteforher.Afewyearslater,afteraboys'departmenthadbeenopenedatPlumtree,headdedthenameofMrs.McRae’sfriend,Mrs.S.P.LeesofKentuckyandNewYork,whohadbeenagenerousbenefactor.Theschoolswerecharteredbythestatein1907astheLees-McRaeInstitute.In1927Lees-McRaebecamecoeducationalwhentheboysunitwasmovedtoBannerElkafterthebuildingsatPlumtreehadbeendestroyedbyfire.

Lees-McRaeInstitutebecameLees-McRaeCollegein1931,graduallyeliminatingthehighschooldepartmenttoformanaccredited,coeducationaljuniorcollege.In1987theBoardofTrusteesofLees-McRaeCollegevotedtoseekseniorcollegestatus.InJuneof1990theCommissiononCollegesoftheSouthernAssociationofCollegesandSchoolsgrantedLees-McRaestatusasasenior(four-year)college.

Overahundredyearsafteritsfounding,Lees-McRaeCol-legecontinuesinthevisionoftheRev.Tuftsmeetingtheeducational needs of the Southern Appalachian regionandbeyond.Thecollegecontinuesto fulfill itsmotto, inthemountains,ofthemountains,andforthemountainswhile extending itsministryof educationand service todiversepopulations.

Today,Lees-McRaeisasmall,private,four-year,coeduca-tional liberalartscollegeaffiliatedwith thePresbyterianChurchU.S.A.withover900studentsfrommorethan20states and countries. Lees-McRae offers 22 outcomes-based,learner-focusedmajorprogramsofstudyandsev-eralminorprogramsofstudy,providingaquality,values-basededucationinanecumenicalenvironment,inspiring

andenablingindividualstocontributetoachangingsocietywithintegrityandcivicresponsibility.Throughacurriculumrootedinaliberalartscoretoeducatethemind,bodyandspirit,combinedwithanemphasisonleadershipandservice,graduatesobtainknowledge,skills,andaholisticunderstandingofthemselvesandtheworld.
