ena bled to meet the need s of mode rn da y motoring a nd b rings tog ether all the

func tions and fea tures c ustom ers wo uld expec t in a ca r of this c lass.

On The Road Cha ssis systems and tec hnologies are foc used on delivering a sporty d riving

experienc e. The m ec hanic a l suspension layouts, for examp le, a re ta ilored to ma tc h

the d iffering performa nc e c ha rac teristics of its eng ines and d rivelines. These c an be

The adva nc ed HiPerStrut o ffers driving b ene fits simila r to tho se o f a doub le w ishbone

layout, but w ithout any weight p ena lty. The inclinat ion a nd leng th of the kingp in is

red uc ed and the c aster ang le of the stee ring inc rea sed . The result: imp roved stee ringqua lity with a m ore planted feel, as well as enhance d hand ling a nd b raking

    characteristics.

At the rea r, the sop histica ted H-arm layout , with isolate d sub-frame mo untings, givesstill grea ter ride c om fort, red uc es vib ra tion entering the c abin and imp roves

roadholding. For both H-arm and 4-link rear suspensions, shear bushings are used in

the damp er mountings to the bod y structure. These effec tively d issipa te vib ra tions

from the roa d , imp roving ride c om fort and noise isolation.

    Saab DriveSense

The a ll new 9-5 Sed an is the first Saab to offe r rea l time damp ing c ont rol through SaabDriveSense, which inc ludes a range of a d justme nts tha t helps the c ar adap t to the

wa y it is being d riven. In add ition to the defa ult Intellige nt mo de, two further sett ings,

Spo rt and Com fort, c an b e selecte d via a rota ry knob next to the ge ar shift.

In real time, Intelligent mode adjusts the cars handling characteristics in response to

    driving style.

It c ontinually va ries the stiffness ra tes of the e lec tronica lly-c ont rolled damp ers, theac tion o f the elec tronic thrott le a nd the d eg ree of p ower steering a ssistanc e. For

exam ple, when the c ar is being d riven in a spo rty style, the ac tion o f the d amp ers is

auto ma tica lly stiffened to imp rove b od y co ntrol and road holding; the throttle ped al

mo veme nt is shortened for a faster response a nd steering assista nc e is red uc ed for amo re d irec t feel. At red uced spe ed s, the da mp ers a re softened for grea ter ride

c om fort, the a c tion of the thrott le p ed a l be com es less agg ressive a nd the stee ring

    feels lighte r.

The Sport setting introduc es a firmer range of a d justme nt fo r the d am pers, offering

even grea ter bod y control. In ad d ition to sharpe ning the throttle ped a l response and

red uc ing the leve l of p ow er stee ring assista nce, Sport mode a lso raises the ge ar

shifting points with automatic transmission and sends more drive torque to the rear

whee ls when Saab XWD is fitted .

By contrast, Com fort mod e, op timizes ride refinement b y enab ling a softe r range ofad justment for the d am pe rs and a smoother throttle p ed al ac tion. It p rovides

enhance d c omplianc e o ver rough roa d surfac es and is the m ost a pp rop riate setting

for op timum fuel ec onomy.

Saab DriveSense is offered as an op tion w ith all engines and eq uipm ent

spec ific a tions, except the turbo diesel and 1.6 turbo ga soline eng ines.

    Saab XWD with eLSDSaab s industry-leading a ll-whee l-drive system is op tiona l for 2.0-liter Turbo a nd 2.0-liter

TTiD variants, and standa rd with the 2.8V6 Turbo eng ine. It o ffers a mo re rewa rd ing

driving experienc e a nd grea ter control in a ll roa d c ond itions. This on-demand, ac tivesystem integ ra ted and op timized by Saab chassis eng ineers uses a multi-plate

An o p tiona l, elec tronica lly-c ont rolled rea r limited-slip d ifferent ial (eLSD) transfers up to

50% of rea r torque b etw een the rea r whee ls, to w hic hever has mo re g rip . Under hard

c ornering, or when c omp leting a high spe ed ma neuver, such as a lane c hang e, the

brief a pp lic a tion of more or less torque to e ither whee l helps the rea r of the c ar mo rec losely follow the d irec tion of the front w hee ls.

Sport ChassisSta ndard with Saab XWD and op tiona l with front -wheel drive, the Sport c hassis set-up

or, if nec essary, the b rakes are a pplied . Should hea vy b raking be req uired , a wa rninggo ng sounds to a lert the d river to take ac tion. Once the ap p rop riate distanc e is

restored , the car will ac c elerate ba c k up to the p re-set spe ed .

A c onve ntional, p assive c ruise c ontrol func tion is a lso available.

Variable Effort Steering (VES)When maneuvering , pa rking or driving a t low speeds, VES increa ses the level of p ow er

assistanc e in order to reduc e steering effo rt. At h igher spee ds, hydraulic assista nc e isauto ma tica lly red uced to ensure a high de gree o f steering fee l for the driver.

VES uses an elec tro-ma gne tic mo tor on the stee ring rac k, c ontrolled by a c oil, to

boost o r red uce the leve l of hyd raulic assistanc e. VES a lso adapts to the speed a twhich the steering whee l is turned , provid ing p rogressively inc rea sed assista nce the
