He also serves with the Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS), working with the Richardson Police Department in Field Operations and Communications. Born and raised in Fresno, California, Bruce’s father was the first Asst. Chief of Police. He graduated from Fresno High School where he participated in track and field as a sprinter. He spent four years in the U.S. Air Force Security Service and was stationed in Turkey for 15 months and Japan for 24 months during his service. Bruce and his wife, Jean, have been married since 1964 and moved to Richardson in 1976 with their two sons. Both sons are graduates of Berkner High School, and the youngest is also a graduate of UTD. Bruce and Jean have two grandsons, ages 11 and 9, and three granddaughters ages 8 and 6. (The six year olds are identical twins.) Jean has worked 32 years for RISD at Big Springs Elementary School. Bruce retired from the transportation business after 37 years. The purpose of the CPA is to teach citizens about the internal workings of the police department. Through this program the RPD helps improve communications and helps citizens make more informed judgments about the police. The CPA is facilitated through the RPD’s Crime Prevention Unit. The 45-hour class (including graduation) meets once a week for three hours over a 16-week period. Students are instructed in the areas of officer selection/recruiting, field training, patrol procedures, communications & 9-1-1, detention procedures, use of force and special weapons and tactics (SWAT). The class includes hands-on-scenarios in addition to the lecture format. During the semester, students have the opportunity to ride with a patrol officer for an entire shift. Students can also spend time in the Communications Building where all emergency calls are handled. Additionally, one complete Saturday class allows students to experience the firearms range as well as the police tactical driving course! The class size is 20 students. The police department holds one CPA class a year, beginning in February. BIRTHDAYS & ANNIV. A MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT ELIZABETH PURDY-BERGIN

Did you know the Richardson Rotary Club members are the best in town? Everyone is doing such a great job with promoting, planning and organizing the Sporting Clays Tournament THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH! Registrations have increased in the last few days so it’ll be all hands on deck Friday August 6.

In case you were absent last week, the members approved the new dues structure of $210.00 per quarter. Each quarterly invoice includes Rotary International and District dues as well as $25.00 for our scholarship program (Richardson Rotary Foundation).

Here are a few notes from the July 8 board meeting:

• Approved participation in special District Wheelchair project (Barry Young please add details if you like)

• Approved full-page ad for RSO season (in lieu of half-page) with new design to be presented at August meeting

• Approved revisions to dues for presentation to the Club on July 12 • Approved pledge form with comments section • Re-affirmed commitment to working for success of Aiming for a Cause • Expressed interest in having more than one fund raiser – tabled for discussion pending

ideas to be presented in August and September • Approved cancel Nov 8 meeting to be replaced by B&I Luncheon on Thursday Nov 11 • Plans for year to be expanded and details discussed as committees have time to propose

ideas in the next couple of months

A THOUGHT FOR THE NEW ROTARY YEAR

In 1916, Rotary founder Paul Harris shared his thoughts about the organization in an article titled "The Future of Rotary," published in The Rotarian. Addressing the Rotary world, Harris concluded the short piece with wishes for the new year. As the 2010-11 Rotary year begins, consider his words:

• I wish you all of the prosperity which your good deeds merit. • May all things you ought have be yours. • May your charities rank among your necessary expenditures. • May you not fall into the popular error of thinking that happiness is to be found in

outdoing your neighbors. • May it always be yours to look beneath the veneer of life to the solid substance which lies

beneath. • May you be builders, not mere climbers. • May you be able to appraise life's blessings at their real worth. • May you be free to act in accordance with the dictates of your own conscience and good

judgment. • May you not be slaves to meaningless customs, social or otherwise. • May you shun the groove-followers. • May you have vision to discern the right and health, strength and will to do it.
