after schoolDear Friends of Girls Inc. of NW Oregon,

I have been thinking a lot lately about what strong, smart and bold really means. More and more I’ve realized how truly these three words embody the core of our Girls Inc. curriculum.

Strong refers to physical activity, and positive body image. Smart ties to encouraging our girls to succeed academically, to be curious and to learn the skills to make positive life decisions. And bold, instilling poise, independence and self confidence. I know that every girl already has these traits inside. But, I firmly believe that Girls Inc. serves a unique role in bringing them to the surface, and I am proud to lead this organization as we help hundreds of girls find the strong, smart and bold in themselves.

Girls Inc. has become a second family for many in our program. Our After School Girls Group are the only place they feel safe to open up and to share their fears and frustrations. I recently met a young woman who told me that Girls Inc. was the place she turned to when she had no home, no family and no positive support. It is stories like hers that reaffirm the vitality of Girls Inc. in our community.

Those three simple words, strong, smart and bold are the tie that binds all of the Girls Inc. girls from across the city together. They link our staff, Board of Directors, Board of Advisors and even the fantastic Power of the Purse “purse-o-nalities” as well. It is my goal that when you ask any Girls Inc. girl in Portland to define herself, she will say: “I am strong, smart and bold”.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you for helping Girls Inc. of NW Oregon bring out the strong, smart and bold in over 350 girls in our region this year.

Sincerely,

Elizabeth NyeExecutive Director

Living in Portland, we have the natural world at our finger tips. Hiking trails, rivers

to canoe, not to mention Mt. Hood is just a short drive away.

Girls Take Off, through a generous grant from REI, brought that experience to over 70 Girls Inc. girls last year.

Through Girls Take Off, girls learn about the natural places around them, and challenge their comfort zones. They also have the chance to put the skills they learn in their after school Girls Group into action as they meet girls from other schools.

Girls Inc. is an historic organization, beginning with the first Girls Club in Waterbury, CT in 1864, and creating a network with the establishment of the Girls Clubs of America by 19 local clubs in 1945.

As the roles of women and girls within society have changed, the Girls Inc. approach and philosophy, programs, and program delivery models have all evolved. In 1864, girls needed a place to be safe while parents – both mothers and fathers – left the homes to work in factories. Then, girls needed a place to learn life skills of the day such as cooking and sewing. Girls Inc. was that place.

Now, because most women work most of their lives, Girls Inc. is a place for girls to dispel the Cinderella myth and to learn how to be confident and self-sufficient through college and career prep programs and instruction in economic literacy. Although the times and programs have changed, Girls Inc. always has been, and always will be, all about the girls.

Currently, Girls Inc. is a network of 93 local affiliates (87 in the U.S., six in Canada), that serves girls ages five to 18, provides girl-centered, supportive environments, and offers services in 350 cities and over 1,500 sites (900 of those in schools). Since 1998, Girls Inc. of Northwest Oregon has been at the forefront of implementing programs in schools and the community that are specifically designed to address the challenges girls in our community face. We have worked with over 5,000 girls and young women in that time.

All Girls Inc. affiliates provide girls with caring, nurturing adults who want the girls to succeed and know how to help them do just that. All Girls Inc. affiliates offer girls the opportunity to have down time – to have some fun and hang out with their friends in a safe, supervised environment. This provides the perfect opportunity to work on soft skills such as making and keeping friends, conflict resolution, anger management, delayed gratification, and communication.

Our Strategic InnitiativesGrOWING uP WITH THE GIrlS We have exposed hundreds of girls to empowering programs based on solid research and evaluation since 2001. Participating in a single program is simply not enough to create the impact our girls deserve. As the next step in our evolution, we plan to grow the programs we offer with the goal of creating a more sustained, direct and comprehensive impact on the lives of our girls and on the community as a whole. Before now, if a girl “aged” out of the group at her school, there was no other way for her continued involvement. We want to continue serving girls who’ve found a home at Girls Inc.

GIVING VOIcE TO THE GIrlS We understand the complexity of girls’ lives and are dedicated to advancing the basic human rights of girls - the right to be respected, self-reliant, healthy, safe and challenged. We plan to renew our commitment to advocacy by helping girls find their voice in public arenas and bring their compelling perspectives to policy makers, the media and business leaders.
