chapter 1: beauty by the beholder
Page 5
The circle as a metaphor for recycling is aptly captured in the architecture of the Marina Barrage, Singapore. The beauty of circles as the most perfect symbol, yet the most simple to understand, can be seen here.
Marina Barrage, Singapore

The under-appreciated design of the fire hydrant is indeed
something of a misnomer. Designed to be outstandingly
obvious, while remaining oblivious to its surroundings
when not needed...the perfect ‘chameleon’.
Marina Barrage, Singapore
Page 7
Youths in love are always a sight to behold. Love at its most beautiful...so
pure, innocent, yet so seemingly intense.
Marina Barrage, Singapore

The beauty that the St. Vitus Cathedral offers is simply breathtaking. Located within the Prague castle complex, it is simply THE epitome of an ancient architectural marvel, with its fine details and a history to go along with it. Perfect for the Goth, and the Goth at heart.
St. Vitus Cathedral, Prague, Czech Republic

It is always beautiful to capture the essence of youthful vigour,
and what better way than to immortalise it through the
acrobatics of a cheerleader.
Yishun Stadium, Singapore
Page 10
Life is beautiful and no matter what life’s challenges comes
along, you just have to go on, even if it means being different,
in a whole new environment.

Everyone who understands and desires beauty would doll (pun intended) herself/himself up to look presentable. No difference with these dolls. Art mirroring life...at a doll shop.
Easter Fair, Prague, Czech Republic

The Marina Waterfront in all her night-skyline glory; a beautiful showpiece of a young nation maturing into adulthood. But beauty doesn’t last forever, does it?

Fireworks lighting up the nightsky. The irony is that an invention that has its roots in modern warfare, is also a thing of beauty if
beautifully ‘crafted’ on a night sky.

Asian beauties performing during the Chingay Parade. Sometimes we spend too much time thinking about how to LOOK beautiful, but we
forget about how to FEEL beautiful.

Graffiti artist at work, legally of course. Ironic that in a world of colours, sometimes the simplicity that black and white offers is simply...simple.
Night Festival, SMU Green, Singapore

It is interesting to note how black and white creates a scarier image. Perhaps the lack of colour does seem to highlight this even more, ironically.
Blue Mountain, Australia

Capturing memories. No longer is it just about having them in ‘black and white’. With technology, these clips are a digital native’s current version of ‘black & whites’.

What happens when we slow down time? Would messages be more ‘impactful’?
The human-short-messaging-system takes messaging to a whole new level.
Night Festival, National Art Museum, Singapore
What happens when we hasten time? Would entertainment be seen as even more entertaining?
I guess some like it fast, some like it slow, and some like it in every single shades of ‘grey’.

Interesting that a city that is so steep in the arts, just looked so much better in a tone
that others might find boring.

Sacrifices for the family are nothing new. Sometimes you have to work even
harder, not just for yourself, but for your family too. You have to pave the way
and create the ‘cracks’, so that the young may continue on living.

Some icons are popular, and some are not so (popular). Some are fictional, and some are historical. But no
matter what, they do define what Singapore is all about.
