2009‐2010 YEAR IN REVIEW REPORT

JCCI was one of the first organizations in Jacksonville to recognize the importance of cultivating young leaders. We worked hard this year to make sure we lived up to that legacy.  During 2009‐10 JCCI Forward was re‐dedicated to the task of engaging citizens 45 and under to prepare them for future roles as community leaders. We also took time to reflect on our accomplishments in preparation for celebrating 10 years as one of the most civically engaged organizations in the community.  

As Chair of Forward, it has been my pleasure to work with, in my opinion, the most talented group of community minded folks in Jacksonville. The Forward Executive Committee and JCCI staff included a perfect mix of experience and fresh faces. It has been extremely satisfying for me to build relationships with a group of people who understand Jacksonville’s challenges, and are committed to the task of making our community the best possible place to work, play, and raise a family.  

As an organization, we began our ninth year selecting topics of importance to our members and the community.  Our “Mystery Guest Luncheon”, which has been a huge success for many years, continued this trend with an education twist.  Our surprise guests were Superintendent of Duval County Schools Ed Pratt‐Dannals; Teach for America‐Jacksonville Executive Director Crystal Jones; Public Education Fund President “Trey” Csar; KIPP Executive Director Tom Majdanics; and Duval County School Board Member W.C. Gentry. The Mystery 

Guest Luncheon format allows each guest to give their perspective on a given topic, and then engage in a question and answer session with the limited diners present. Each luncheon provided attendees with the opportunity to engage these community leaders in frank dialogue regarding our education system, its challenges and its successes.  

Our year continued with the fall issue forum: Dollars + Sense: Investing in Your Financial Future, about a timely a topic as there has ever been. With the economic downturn, individuals and families are finding themselves with a decline in disposable income, leading more people back to proven strategies for coping with limited income – cash only purchasing, saving for a rainy day, paying down debt, and living below one’s means.  In the spring we explored the myths and realities of how making “green” choices saves the environment, but also saves us money. Going Green, Saves Green brought together Jacksonville’s environmental stakeholders to discuss strategies to conserve energy and reduce the strain on the environment. In May, we held our final forum to discuss the importance of web 2.0 in Community Engagement Through Social Media: Confirm or Ignore? This forum utilized technology in a hands‐on environment to discuss how social media sites such as Facebook, LinkedIn, and Hoot Suite are the tools du jour for maintaining contact with others on both a professional and personal level.   

Forward also introduced a new learning opportunity this year.  JAXFacts was a tremendously successful group of workshops, which included a “speed dating” information session with Jacksonville’s Mayoral candidates and another with local education innovators. Through JAXFacts we also tackled the challenges veterans face when they return home and make the transition from warrior to civilian. The final JAXFacts, was a world wind walking tour of Riverside/Avondale beginning at the Cummer Museum, stopping through Memorial Park and on to 5 Points – this fun filled evening was a great refresher on how to be tourists in your own backyard.  

I am confident that our Executive Committee, members, and program participants continued and improved upon the tradition of civic engagement at JCCI. In the years to come, Forward veterans will continue to set the example of the civic minded, community steward in Northeast Florida. I am convinced that JCCI Forward, is the entry point for the under 45 set who aspire to become learned and engaged community stewards.    It is now my honor to hand the Forward gavel to my friend and colleague Elexia Coleman‐Moss. Elexia’s fire and dedication will carry us through Forward’s 10th anniversary in a manner that brings diverse leaders together to tackle diverse issues that affect a diverse community.  I want to thank all of the volunteers of this wonderful organization who make it as great as it is, the members of the Board of Directors of JCCI who provided us with the vision, and the staff of JCCI who help us execute that vision. It has been a tremendous year of accomplishment, and I am humbled to have been the selected as the Chair for the 2009‐2010 year. I wish Elexia and her leadership team a very successful 10th Anniversary year.

OVERVIEW ABOUT US Established  in  July  of  2000,  JCCI  Forward  is  an  initiative  of  Jacksonville  Community  Council  Inc.  (JCCI)  that  seeks  to engage men and women ages 25‐45 in civic involvement and to prepare them with skills and information for their future roles as community  leaders.   This program  is an  ideal way  to  interact with existing  leaders,  to experience  leadership development,  and  to  build  a  network  of  friends  and  associates who  all  share  the  common  goal  of  improving  our community.  OUR VISION To empower emerging leaders and community‐minded individuals to affect positive change in Northeast Florida through a platform of results‐oriented issue forums and leadership development programs.   OUR ACTIVITIES & EVENTS JCCI Forward provides the information, tools, and resources needed to develop strong community leadership skills and to  help  affect  positive  change  in  our  community.    Like  JCCI,  JCCI  Forward  hosts  its  own  community  forums  and workshops, all with the three‐fold aim of studying the issues which are central to our community’s growth, providing an opportunity to meet,  interact and work with our community’s existing  leadership structure, and  focusing on the skills critical to assuming a leadership role in our community’s future.

 We are so pleased to take time at the 9th Annual Meeting to acknowledge the hard work and support of Carla Marlier.  Carla, a retired public relations professional, has served JCCI, JCCI Forward, and the Jacksonville community through many roles. Forward was created after the JCCI Leadership: Meeting Community Needs study identified Jacksonville’s challenge to nurture a new generation of effective community leadership at the same time that JCCI’s strategic vision called for increased efforts to engage young people in civic life. Carla was part of the implementation of the 1996 study and served as program chair in 2002.   JCCI Forward, according to Carla, “provides the best plan for mentoring Jacksonville’s up and comers to become effective community leaders. I love it! I love to tell people about it,” she says. Carla has been, and continues to be, a mentor to the program’s members and believes “You always receive more pleasure in giving than in receiving.”   As JCCI Forward heads into its 10th year, Carla was the first to step up as the chair of the kick‐off event.  Please plan to join us and to be sure that you don’t miss any of the great events planned, be sure and sign up for the weekly e‐blast on our website: www.jcci.forward.org and catch us on Twitter and Facebook.

ISSUE FORUMS Issue Forums offer participants a venue to interact with respected community leaders and resource experts on issues of concern to Northeast Florida citizens.  Participants explore issues critical to the community's growth, seek understanding of related problems, and come to consensus on proposed action plans implemented for positive change.

OCTOBER 2009‐ISSUE FORUM 

 KEY FINDINGS:             Savings Being a ‘saver’ is a behavior not a practice. It requires a commitment to the lifestyle and change in approach to spending. 

Being a short term saver is easier with disciple. Long term savings isn’t hopeless but requires a dedication to the lifestyle and disciple that the majority of the Forward generation ignores and, in most cases, never tried. 

  

Risk Tolerance Defined in most cases as what we are willing to tolerate or trust, risk tolerance needs to be measured on the scale from needs to wants.  There will always be times when a need is dressed as a want and may need to take a temporary backseat in dire circumstances, such as should basic health insurance or  long term healthcare insurance coverage, to other expenses. 

  

Budgeting The stigma attached to setting and keeping a budget has made the practice of learning the tool into a need to teach it as a skill set. Unfortunately unless we are doing it as a job for a business, budgeting, goal setting and tracking isn’t a part of your life 

plan.  We need to approach our personal finances as if we are all company CEOs. Each dollar made has a purpose, whether to reinvest or pay down expenses. And each expense is an investment in our company that gets us to our ultimate financial goals. 

We must ask: Is it a wise investment? We learn what we know about personal finances by example. Influential adults and parents are our role models and fiscal compatibility is the #1 reason for divorce. We need to talk about money openly, honestly 

and work together for support.   

Retirement & Financial Planning (Research/Knowledge/Education) These skills are NOT taught. Not even the basics, unless it’s your chosen career. Lifestyles and personal responsibilities are not part of the school system’s education of future generations. We all need financial mentors and support through various stages 

of life who can speak our language. The information sharing needs to reach people and make the knowledge relevant  before it’s too late. 

It’s our personal responsibility to prepare for what retirement will cost when the time comes. We cannot count on social security or other outside support.  We must calculate the costs now vs. when our times come, and account for inflation  

during planning. The concept of the term ‘retirement’ is changing with each new generation. What is now available may change and many 

versions are not yet invented. We decide what our retirement goals are. They will change, and so will our approach to meeting those goals, but the future is coming and we need to start now.  The amount of information when getting started can be 

overwhelming and confusing. We need to reach out to professionals to provide advice that we can verify and find comfort in taking.  We must do it. Filter out the noise and don’t ever be afraid to ask questions. It’s our money and we must be informed 

to manage it wisely.  Seek support from others and learn from one another either in a Social Savers or Investment Club.  Always investigate the 

reliability of a financial possibility and product. Know the options and read the fine print.

 JAN ‐MAR 2010‐ISSUE FORUM KEY FINDINGS • Education is key; this is a lifestyle commitment to lifelong learning.  With new legitimate green, and greenwashing, products entering the marketplace so quickly, you must do your research and make the best decision for each situation. It’s not a one size fits all answer. 

• There is a need to re‐examine ways to break down misperceptions.  Many environmentally friendly options are often low or no‐cost to implement. Many green products are on par or less expensive than traditional unfriendly products.  Some items are still more expensive, especially with expiring rebates. 

• There is a need to better understand ‘why’ we don’t choose to be greener, can’t assume it is the same answer for everyone. 

• Change, and actionable items, must be easy in order to engage others in participating; use the four‐prong approach: o Education o Incentivize

o Deincentivize o Provide a social aspect

Going Green $ave$ Green This forum explored the myths and realities of how making green choices not only saves the environment but saves money. The forum examined how local government, businesses and 

individuals are making economical and environmentally‐friendly choices. 

ACTION PLAN:  The committee, using the Issue Forum meeting summaries and supplemental material, answered the question “What should we do?” and determined the following plan: • A listing of tips & tricks learned was created (and listed in the key findings); including local resources, existing programs 

and financial literacy training.  • The list is posted as a ‘note’ on the JCCI Forward Facebook page. A post of the results of the forum on a blog and 

participants were asked to review and comment.  The web address is: http://leepoechmann.wordpress.com/ • The JCCI Forward website will post all the forums summaries and handouts. • Participants agreed that attending this forum provided education and results for each of them and that they are now 

charged with using what they’ve learned and sharing with others. They agreed to attend and reconnect in 2010 to provide an update on their progress and their personal commitments to change using the tips and tricks learned.

MAY 2010‐ISSUE FORUM IN HER OWN WORDS…by Jacqui Lowe

When I was first asked to facilitate part of the forum on Community Engagement thru Social Media: Confirm or Ignore? I had some initial trepidation.  While I have a strong interest in social media, I did not feel like I had the technical expertise to back up my knowledge.  Ultimately though, because I come from a family that fearlessly embraces new technology and I wanted to help others embrace the unknown world of social media, I was excited about the opportunity to share what I knew about Twitter and how to manage my online presence.  On May 6th, the first session of the two part forum was facilitated by Abel Harding from The Florida Times‐Union.  In the forum we discussed the evolution of the Web including moving from Web 1.0 (lots of static content) to Web 3.0, which is highly interactive and ever evolving.  Abel also led a facilitated discussion with the forum participants about their concerns, which ranged from privacy issues to wondering if we put too much emphasis on developing relationships online than in person, and exploring whether or not social media would just take up more time then what it was truly worth.  We also talked a lot about community and while we didn’t come away with any concrete answers, the consensus was successful engagement in social media depends upon how you define your community.      In the second session, a hands‐on demonstration of the different types of social media was facilitated by Donny Lamley from Discover Tec, Tiffany Duhart from blinkvirtualbuzz.com and me.  Between the three of us, we took turns exploring Delicious, Linked In, Twitter, MySpace, Facebook and HootSuite.  We led the audience through a step‐by‐step demonstration on how to setup and use each of these tools.   Additionally, each of us set up accounts for JCCI Forward to begin to develop their online presence.     Coming full circle, this forum is still being talked about as social media is such an incredibly powerful tool to help connect us to the people, places and things around us.  In particular, I am excited for JCCI as the staff has begun to take a fearless approach with how they connect with the community through social media, including a new fundraising challenge where people and businesses alike can become a Sponsor of Forward for a day.   Join the fun and be a part of their community on Facebook and Twitter.  They’d love to have you help grow and shape the new online community!  Attendees:  Abel Harding (Facilitator) Steve Baker, Lori Boyer, Clanzenetta Brown, Lee Brown, Jason Castillo, Bill David, Leah Donelan,  Tiffany  Duhart,  Kara  Ebright,  James  Geller, William  Jackson  Leslie  Kirkwood,  Ben  Lamonthe,  Bill  Larson,  Circe LeNoble, David  Letro,  Linda  Levin, Alex  Lowe,  Jacquelyn  Lowe,  Jay Magee,  Jennifer Mansfield,  James Minion, Elexia Moss, Shannon Nazworth,   Christine Parker, Aliera Peterson, Chris Peterson, Lee Poechmann, Christine Rasche, Beth Slater, Tonya Smart, Nadine Swan and Tatyana Ta.  Staff Michelle Simkulet

Community Engagement thru Social Media This forum offered an opportunity to discuss how online communication has evolved and is used for community building; to explore the opportunities available, including Facebook, LinkedIn and 

Twitter; and to determine what ways it can impact community engagement.

SOCIAL EVENTS A  variety  of  social  events  held  throughout  the  year  offered  additional opportunities to participants, including:  Networking Socials allow members to connect with each other, strengthen relationships, and learn more about JCCI Forward. We often will promote an event to support our partners, like LOUD at the Library and the IMPACTjax Holiday Party at the Omni.  Others were focused on our programs such as the kick‐off social for the fall Dollars + Sense forum at Florida Theatre and we started the Going Green Forum with a social and a tour of TLC’s Silver LEED building.  Food For Thought gatherings give participants the opportunity to network and discuss topics of the day. Topics included Neighborhood Safety : Dos and Don’ts, It’s our health, why don’t we take better care of it?  and An update on Haiti.   Mystery  Guest  Lunches  provide  participants  the  opportunity  to  engage with local leaders in public education for an intimate lunch, hosted by Forward Chair, Lee  Brown.    This  year’s  mystery  guests  included  Superintendent  Ed  Pratt‐Dannals; Teach for America‐Jacksonville Executive Director Crystal Jones; Public Education  Fund  President  Trey  Csar;  KIPP  Executive Director  Tom Majdanics; and Duval County School Board Member W.C. Gentry.

JAXFacts Our newest reincarnation for workshops and seminars is JAXFacts, our knowledge seminar series.  The events focused on the priorities issues effective our community’s quality of life include government, arts and culture, health and education. These multi‐formatted events help us get up close and personal with those who are in the trenches on these issues.    Whether it was ‘speed dating’ with our mayoral candidates and public education leaders, stomping through history and back again during our Urban Safari through Riverside and 5 Points or hearing firsthand accounts of the experiences of returning home after serving our nation in warzones, JCCI Forward participants had the opportunity to meet these fine men and women and educate themselves on the issues.
