Every year Lynn University’s men’s soccer teamis in the picture to make a play for the nationalchampionship. This season the Fighting Knightslike their chances more than ever, thanks to a re-turning cast that includes two All-Americans andfour All-Sunshine State Conference selections.

Head coach John Rootes lost just a few playersfrom a squad which advanced to its sixth consecu-tive NCAA Tournament but has improved thedepth of every position. Whereas the past few sea-sons saw a dip in talent beyond the starting 11, thisyear’s team is opening up position battles and forc-ing players to be coming more versatile.

“We have a dangerous team this year that is fo-cused on the big prize,” said third-year coachRootes. “These guys had a bad taste in their mouthafter the ending to last year’s season and have re-committed themselves to being one of the best.”

Forwards•Paulo Vaz led the SSC in goals and points andwas third in the nation in points/game, fourth ingoals/game and eighth in assists/game

•The Fighting Knights have had at least one dou-ble-digit goal scorer for 13 consecutive years and23 of 24 years in total

•Lynn had the second-highest scoring average inthe nation last year behind 3.16 goals per game

Rootes’ View…“There are high expectations for our forwards thisseason. Paulo Vaz proved last year his is one ofthe top goal scorers in the country but there was abit of a drop-off after him. That has changed forthe better this season and given us probably themost depth out of any position on the team.

“Harald Grocholski and Ewan Clarke are two ofthe players who will see time up top. Harald is verygood and has a nose for scoring goals while Ewanis a bull. He’s tough to push around, is a great tar-get and has a good touch and shot. And with someof our players being versatile, there may be timeswhen a Stefan Wolf or Kyle Conrad sees time as aforward.”

Midfield•Kyle Conrad is 26 points shy of becoming just thefourth player in program history with 100 careerpoints

•Fighting Knights return four of five midfieldstarters

• Scott McCubbin was second on the team withKyle Conrad with seven assists

Rootes’ View…“We have a ton of midfielders on the roster buttheir roles are split in half with attacking and defen-sive roles. Kyle Conrad, our second leading scorerlast year, really sets the pace with his speed and nat-ural ability to finish. I think him paired with ournewcomer Ryan Birch, who is a nice attacking mid-fielder, really will be an offensive boost. Plus wehave players like Jon Schatz, Roberto Cadihle andTommy Guerra who are hard-working players.

“Scott McCubbin, Christian Dohnert and LukeMagill really set the tone on the defensive side.Add Pedro Saona to the mix and you have fourplayers who can win balls, whether in the air or theground, possess and distribute to our attackingplayers.”

Defense•Since moving into a starting role as a sophomore, senior Joe Cundall has started all but one game indefense

•Scott Gordon earned All-Sunshine State Confer-ence Honorable Mention honors in his first seasonwith the Blue & White despite playing in only 12games

•Knights defense returns three starters off a teamwhich held opponents to 4.4 shots on goal pergame

Rootes’ View…“This team is extremely strong in the back with ourstrength, height and speed. Scott Gordon, arguablythe best athlete in the conference, will anchor thedefense for us. His smoothness distributing theball from the back line and his ability to run oppo-nents off the ball, not to mention is leadership qual-ities, are what make him such a threat.

“Joe Cundall is a player who just continues to getbetter and better every year. He has improved somuch in his coverage and passing skills along withhis ability to win balls in the air that he now has theversatility to switch between the outside and middledefense. These two players, along with StefanWolf, will be the core of the defense and be abridge to some of our newcomers.

“Eyjolfur Eyjolfsson and Brent Lawler have shownthey have the stuff to compete at our level and Ican’t wait to see them in real game action. Theirheight [Ejolfsson is 6-foot-4 and Lawler is 6-foot-2]and strength are major assets and will make teamsthink twice about getting physical in the box and at-tempting to win aerial balls.”

Goalkeeping•Alessandro Salvatore finished in the top-three ofthe SSC in goals-against average, save percentage, saves and shutouts

•Salvatore earned All-SSC accolades last seasonmaking it seven straight seasons LU has placed agoalkeeper on an All-SSC team

•Back-ups Philipp Uttikal and Matt DiCerbo havecombined for 17 starts between them at prior insti-tutions

Rootes’ View…“We have a solid group of goalkeepers led byAlessandro Salvatore, who could be the bestkeeper in the country, but I’d like to have betterdepth here. Alessandro is such a force around thenet, using his length to cut down on angles andleaping ability to turn away shots in the air.

“Philipp Uttikal has great technique and quicknessand sets the program up for better depth in the fu-ture along with Matt DiCerbo and Robbie Han-non.”

Schedule•Lynn faces three preseason nationally-rankedteams: Tampa (5th), Rollins (10th) and Anderson(14th)

•The Blue & White hit the road their first twoweekends of the season for the first time since 2006when they travel to Memphis to battle Lambuthand Christian Brothers and then go up to squareoff against UNC-Pembroke and Anderson (S.C.)

•The Knights play just seven of their 17 games athome but get some of their toughest opponents inBoca Raton, seeing Rollins, Saint Leo and Tampaat the McCusker Sports Complex

Rootes’ View…“This is a very balanced schedule for us. We areimmediately tested at Christian Brothers the open-ing weekend then face two more tough teams inUNC-Pembroke and Anderson. Not to mentionwe go up against West Florida, who is perenniallyranked in the top-25 and has been a tough gamefor us in the past.

“All of these contests will prepare us for the con-ference, which is especially tough this year. I thinkthere is a lot of parity and not a lot of difference intalent between the top and bottom teams. Luckilyfor us, some of our opponents who have caused ussome headaches in the past have to come to ourfield.”

Despite not being ranked in thetop-25 in the preseason, Lynn jumped out to a 10-0 start toascend to the No. 1 ranking. The Knights closed out the seasonranked 23rd nationally with 14-4-1 overall record and their fifthconsecutive NCAA Tournament appearance.

Not daunted by inheriting one of the top NCAA Division IIprograms in the country, he led the Fighting Knights to the bestrecord in the nation (18-2) in 2008 while winning Sunshine StateConference regular season and tournament titles.

On top of helping the Blue & White reach the NCAATournament for the fourth consecutive year and 10th overall, heoversaw a five-man senior class that earned All-Americaaccolades and successfully converted defensive midfielder JeanAlexandre into one of the top forwards in the nation. He brought with him a proven track record, one in whichhe averaged just over 14 wins a season and reached the postseason11 times, winning the 1989 NCAA Division II NationalChampionship at SNHU.

Amassing a 47-26-2 (.627) record in four years at SCAD, Rootesled the Bees to the NAIA Region XIV Tournament finals in threeconsecutive seasons. In just his second year at Savannah, heestablished the program record for wins (13-4-1) while earning theprogram’s first national ranking (as high as no. 18) and postseasonappearance.

A new challenge awaited Rootes at Clayton State as he took overa program that had only two winning seasons prior to his arrival.Three years into his tenure, the Lakers posted an 18-3-1 recordand earned their first Peach Belt Championship and NCAARegional bid. CSU would go on to record a 69-38-9 (.634) markduring his six-year stay, winning two conference championshipsand securing a pair of NCAA bids.

During his time at SNHU, Rootes compiled a 169-30-11 (.831)record and elevated the program to national prominence. In 10seasons, the Penmen were consistently ranked in theIntercollegiate Soccer Association of America National Top 10and earned three 20-win seasons, six NCAA Division IITournament bids, four appearances in the Elite Eight and anNCAA National Championship in 1989. Nine of his players werenamed NSCAA All-Americans and 15 have gone on to professionalsoccer careers.

Prior to becoming a head coach in New Hampshire, Rootes worked as the senior assistant coach under I.M. Ibrahim at NCAA Division I powerhouse ClemsonUniversity. While with the Tigers, he helped the school to the 1987 National Championship and the 1988 World Collegiate Championship.

As a player, Rootes was a four-year starter for legendary coach Barry Barto at Philadelphia College of Textiles & Sciences (now Philadelphia University) andthe University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Rootes led Textile to an undefeated season and a No. 1-ranking in the final coaches' poll in 1980, and guided UNLV toits first NCAA Tournament bid in 1983.

Rootes was honored twice as an NSCAA All-West striker and was a member of the 1984 United States Amateur team. He also played two years of professionalsoccer for the Boston Storm in 1994 and 1995. Rootes holds a U.S. Soccer Federation "A" license, an NSCAA Advanced National Diploma and a master'sdegree in sport science.
