David Dumars has been a member of the McNeese State coach-ing staff throughout the 2000s. He’s in his 11th season as an assistant coach. During his period as an assis-tant coach he has helped guide the Cowboys to two league titles and participate in both the NCAA and the NIT post season tournaments. His early career in the coaching profession, however, was as a foot-ball coach, having spent 11 years as an assistant on the staff at Southeast Missouri State. He played basketball in high school and coached it in high school and is the older brother of former McNeese State all-American and all-pro Joe Dumars who is now president of the Detroit Pistons. The 53 year old Cowboy coach works with the Cowboy post players and is one of the Southland Confer-ence’s premier recruiters. He is a former professional football player, having played for the New York Jets in the NFL, for Mon-treal in the CFL and for Denver and Birmingham in the USFL. Two years running he was an all-pro selection as a strong safety for Denver, leading the league in pass interceptions with eight and with a return average of 34 yards. A 1980 graduate of Louisiana-Monroe, Dumars began his coach-ing career at Tallulah (LA) High in 1987.

He and his wife Marsha have two children - Davique and LaTasha.

STEVE WELCH ASSISTANT COACH SECOND YEAR

FORMER COWBOY HEAD COACH

Steve Welch returned to the coaching ranks last year, brought out of retirement by the opportunity to coach with his former assistant coach Dave Simmons. The former Cowboy head coach was also a long time assistant at both Louisiana Tech and Southeastern Louisiana during his career. He is coaching all aspects of the game and is also recruiting. One of the nation’s top recruit-ers when he was a member of the Louisiana Tech staff (he signed Karl Malone and Randy White) Welch spent seven seasons as the McNeese State head coach, winning 76 games along with a conference title. His team also competed in the NCAA tournament almost knocking off then nationally ranked Illinois in an open-ing game. Among the Cowboy standouts on those Welch teams in the late 1980s and early 1990s were Anthony Pullard, Martin Yokum, Michael Cutright and Terry Griggley. “Ever since Dave (Simmons) came back to town, we’ve talked about me coming back and helping out,” the coach said a year ago. “I had retired once and then thought about

retiring again until Dave asked me to come help out,” Welch said. Welch had spent 12 years as the assistant director of intramurals at the university. Welch and his wife Judi, who is a school teacher, have two sons and

Dr. Brett Welch is an assistant professor in education at McNeese while Dr. Todd Welch is a periodonist in Jackson, TN.

TOMMY MCCLELLANDDirector of Athletics

Dr. Philip C. Williams is president of

year as such. He is the sixth president of the university and is a native of North Carolina. He earned a BA degree in 1974 as a Morehead scholar at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, graduating with honors in history. He earned his law degree at the Columbia University School of Law in

-ment with honors from the Parker Program in Foreign and International Law. During the course of his legal profession, he practiced corporate law and served as administrative vice president and counsel for Sea World, Inc. In 1994 he returned to Chapel Hill to earn his Ph.D in Health Policy and Administration. Prior to beginning his career in higher educa-tion, he served for one year as a post-doctoral research fellow at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. Most recently he was president of the Univeristy of Montevallo (ALA).------------ The University has provided, for over a half century, service to its community and state and to the students who seek to secure their future through higher education. McNeese opened its doors in 1939 as Lake Charles Junior College and as a division of the Louisiana State University system. Name changes later were made to John McNeese Junior College (1940) and to McNeese State (1950) when the university separated from LSU. In 1970 the school obtained its present name of McNeese State University. The university presently has an enrollment of 9,000 and has over 300 fulltime faculty members, half of whom possess the doctoral degree. The university is located on 580 acres in south Lake Charles. McNeese was named after John McNeese, a pioneer Southwest Louisiana educator who served

-sieu Parish. He was also a cattle rancher and was

the Sabine River, thus the school’s nickname of Cowboys.

Tommy McClelland is the seventh ath-letic director in McNeese State’s 71 year his-tory and he has “made a difference” in the four years he has been in charge. In the time he has served as the athletic director, more than $2.5 million in renovation and construction has been applied to the ath-
