Why Middle Tennessee

As MTSU counts down to its centennial in 2011, there’s vibrancy in abundance across campus, in Murfreesboro and Rutherford Coun-ty, and around the region. Growth can be seen at many levels, from enrollment to facilities to scholarship aid to endowment to student involvement to research and more. With a record 26,432 registered and attending in the fall 2010, the largest undergraduate total in Ten-nessee, enrollment remains on the rise since the arrival to Dr. Sidney A. McPhee, MTSU’s 10th president, in 2001. The University’s growth parallels that of Murfreesboro over 100,000 and Rutherford County with nearly 250,000 residents. Recent projects include reno-vations of the Health, Wellness and

Recreation Center; Reese Smith Jr. Field; and the construction of Dean A. Hayes Track and Soccer Stadium as well as a new College of Educa-tion building and student union. Fu-ture projects planned are a new sci-ence building, a student union, and a new College of Education. People who have not visited the campus in many years are astonished at the changes. The MTSU Foundation has an endowment of almost $27 million, and total foundation assets exceed $58 million.

More than $1 million a year in the form of scholarships, faculty awards and student-support pro-gram is now pumped into academ-ics units in earning from the endow-ments. Once on campus, students have about 225 registered organiza-tions to choose from. They can be in-volved in student government and political groups, Greek life (sorori-ties and fraternities), student pub-lications, honor societies, profes-sional organizations, human interest groups, and more. In fiscal year 2008-2009, MTSU received $38.1 million in extramural funds for research, service and in-struction an increase of $1.54 million over the previous year, according to campus reports.

Sports Medicine Facility

Health care is one of the most important aspects of a student-athlete’s life, and no university is more com-mitted to keeping athletes healthy than Middle Ten-nesseee. The Sports Medicine facility provides MTSU student-athletes with one of the finest athletic train-ing facilities in the nation. Head Athletic Trainer Drew Shea and the Sports Medicine staff have set liberal hours to make sure each student-athlete has his or her needs met. Alison Ness

Strength and Conditioning

One of the biggest changes in college athletics in the past few years has been the attitude toward strength and conditioning. Performing in the weight room has become just as important as on-the-field competi-tion, and Middle Tennessee has one of the very best staffs in the nation committed to making student-athletes the best they can be. Assistant Athletic Director Matt Riley takes care of all the strength and conditioning, in-cluding all stretching before practices and workouts as well as conditioning. It all happens in the Blue Raiders’ 10,000-plus square foot weight room facility, locat-ed adjacent to the north end zone of Floyd Stadium and designed for use by all Middle Tennessee student-athletes. It is a strength and training area that rivals any in the coun-try. The weight room has been described by many people as better than any in the imme-diate area, including those at SEC and Con-ference USA schools.

Academic Enhancement

The Student-Athlete Enhancement Cen-ter (SAEC) at MTSU houses the academic support system and the Blue Raider Ath-lete Skills for Success (B.R.A.S.S.) Life Skills Program for all 17 Division 1-A sports. The center is housed at Johnny “Red” Floyd Stadium on Raider Drive. The facility opened its doors on January 4, 1999, to the delight of student-athletes, coaches, and administrators. The mission of the center is to help stu-dent-athletes take skills learned on the field and turn them into positive prepa-ration for life after college. The center is also committed to meeting the changing needs of student-athletes. It continues to promote partnerships between the Uni-versity, the NCAA, and the Murfreesboro community to help achieve its goals. In addition to to providing the academic support needed to be successful in the classroom, the center is committed to meeting the needs of student-athletes in life skills development through the very popular B.R.A.S.S. program.

Dining

MTSU offers five different on-campus dining areas, with the most popular being Keathley University Center (KUC) Grill and Cyber Café. The KUC is located in the center of campus and is a ma-jor intersection for student activities. The Grill is located on the second floor and features Pizza Hut, Quizno’s Subs, Grille Works, Salad Garden, Chick-Fil-A, the Burger Studio, Asian Express, and Einstein Bros. Bagels. The KUC Grill is open from 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday–Thursday and is open until 5 p.m. on Fridays. The Cyber Café is the first of its kind in the Tennessee Board of Regents system, offering a futuristic and effi-cient way for students to dine. Students are able to eat while e-mailing or searching the Web at the same time on eight computers with access to the World Wide Web. MTSU also features buffet style dining at McCallie Din-ing in Corlew Hall and the RaiderZone at James Union Building. Both offer subs, pizza, grill works, carved meats, fresh deli food, fresh-made pasta, and a salad bar.

Scarlett Commons

Scarlett Commons, named for former MTSU presi-dent M.G. Scarlett, is one of the premier residential complexes any university in the region. Opened to students in the fall of 1999, the facility provides apart-ment-style living with the convenience of staying on campus. Nine three-story buildings with 12 apartments each and a clubhouse make up the Scarlett complex. Each apartment contains four private bedrooms connected by two private bathrooms, a full kitchen, and a com-fortable living room. The Scarlett Commons clubhouse creates a real sense of community with its recreation/meeting rooms, fire-place, big screen TV, and laundry room. Any mainte-nance issues can be addressed by just a phone call to the 24-hour reception and service desk in the club-house. Students living in Scarlett Commons have their own restricted parking lot, so it’s easy to find parking.

While there are 31 NCAA conferences that sponsor multiple sports, the Sun Belt is one of only eleven to participate in the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) and Football Bowl Subdivision. The Sun Belt was formed in 1976, with six mem-bers competing in four men’s sports, and today comprises 13 institutions of higher learning while sponsoring 19 champion-ship sports for men and women. The Sun Belt Conference entered its 35th season in 2010-11 with a proud his-tory of athletic and academic success. The conference sponsors 10 women’s sports - basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming and div-ing, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field and volleyball; and nine men’s sports - baseball, basketball, cross coun-try, football, golf, swimming and diving, tennis and indoor and outdoor track and field. Each of the 19 sports has seen nu-merous team and individual accom-plishments, and 12 Sun Belt Conference schools are currently gradu-ating their student athletes at a rate higher than their school’s student body. All Sun Belt schools are com-mitted to excellence and facility upgrades and expan-sions are occurring on virtu-ally every campus. Because of its status as a

member of the Division 1 football coali-tion, the Sun Belt Conference has a per-manent seat on the NCAA’s 17-member Board of Directors. As a result, the con-ference has a crucial voice on some of the most pressing issues in college ath-letics and will always have a role in the implementation of any future NCAA leg-islation and guidelines. The conference continues to utilize television to grow and promote the league. Adding volleyball, baseball, and softball to the conference’s television package has resulted in more national and regional television exposure for the league than at any time in its history. The conference’s regional television package enables live telecasts of Sun Belt events to reach over 20 million households. Additionally, ESPN televised the confer-ence’s men’s basketball championship game for the 29th straight season in 2009, marking its longest affiliation with any conference in the country. The Sun Belt Conference has part-

nered with JumpTV Sports Inc. to deliver a full-service, customized, public and premium Web site to provide fans with a broad range of real-time information and content about the conference’s ath-letic teams. The Sun Belt is one of the few conferences in the nation to provide video highlights and features on its web site from each of the league’s respec-tive championships. This technology is a great recruiting tool, enabling anyone in the world with internet access to view the conference’s championships. Fans in five different countries viewed the con-ference’s most recent soccer champion-ship. The Sun Belt Conference is led by Commissioner Wright Waters, who is in his ninth full year as commissioner. He was named the conference’s fourth com-missioner in February of 1998 following the tenures of Vic Bubas (1976-1990), Jim Lessig (1990-1991), and Craig Thomp-son (1991-1998). The league’s annual all sports champion is awarded the Vic

Bubas All-Sports Cup, named after the conference’s first commissioner. The conference office has been headquartered in downtown New Orleans since 2000 after moving from its suburban location of Metairie, La.

McPhee’s scholarly pursuits include several international visits and presentations in locations such as Beijing, Shanghai, Hangzhou, and Lanzhou, China; Mekelle, Ethiopia; Penang, Malaysia; Hong Kong; Moscow and St. Peters-burg, Russia; Tokyo and Osaka, Japan; Seoul, South Korea; Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, Israel; Ant-werp, Belgium; Montreal, Canada; Oxford, Eng-land; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; and Nassau, Bahamas. McPhee is currently a participating member of NCAA’s Football Academic Working Group and just recently chaired the NCAA Division I Working Group to review “At-Risk” Student-Ath-lete issues (ARSA). The ARSA final report was sub-mitted to the NCAA Board of Directors in January 2009. McPhee also served a five-year term on the

NCAA Division I Board of Directors, a three-year term on the NCAA Executive Committee, and two terms as president of the Sun Belt Confer-ence athletic league and chairman of the SBC’s CEO Executive Committee. In May 2005, he was appointed to the NCAA Presidential Commission on the Future of Intercollegiate Athletics. In 2002, President George W. Bush appointed him to the National Council for the Humanities, and the U.S. Senate confirmed him. A past member of the Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, McPhee chaired its member-ship council. He is a member of the Murfrees-boro Noon Rotary Club and serves as a member of the SunTrust Bank Board of Directors (Nash-ville) and SunTrust Regional Bank Advisory Board (Murfreesboro). He also served on the Nashville Adventure Science Center Board, the Middle Tennessee Medical Center Board, and the Mid-dle Tennessee Council for Boy Scouts of America Executive Board and co-chaired the Tennessee Legislative Retreat Task Force on Higher Educa-tion. McPhee was recently re-elected to a second three-year term as a commission member of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. During McPhee’s tenure at MTSU, the Univer-

sity has experienced considerable growth in many areas. Student enrollment has increased significantly, making MTSU undergraduate enrollment the largest in the state. During the past several years, the University added twelve new degree programs at the graduate and undergraduate levels. In 2002, for the first time in the history of the University, three Ph.D. programs were established: in Economics, Eng-lish, and Human Performance. A Ph.D. in Public History was instituted shortly thereafter, and in July 2007, a new Ph.D. in Literacy Studies was approved. From 2001 to 2007, the University increased extramural funding from $6 million to approximately $40 million. Since McPhee’s arrival, MTSU has been suc-cessful in raising admission standards, resulting in an increase in high-ability students. MTSU has been the institution of choice for midstate valedictorians and salutatorians in recent years and has enrolled a significant number of Na-tional Merit scholars and Achievement schol-ars. McPhee’s presidency has coincided with several major improvements in University fa-cilities. A ten-year, $70 million renovation of all student residential housing is scheduled for completion by 2011, the University’s centenni-al year. In addition, the University acquired the 500-acre Guy James property to consolidate its highly regarded programs in the School of Agribusiness and Agriscience. This acquisition doubled the size of campus acreage from 500 to 1,000. Over $9 million was spent to renovate Andrew L. Todd Hall, which now houses the Department of Art and has state-of-the-art equipment for its students and faculty. The Paul W. Martin Sr. Honors Building was built with private funding. In January 2007, an ad-dition to the Cason-Kennedy Nursing Build-ing was opened and dedicated, bringing the facility to 28,000 square feet. The University secured private gifts in support of a $6 million baseball stadium completed in 2008 and dedi-cated in spring 2009. In 2006, the University received $15 million in state support for the planning and infrastructure development for a proposed $120 million science building, and in April 2007, a new $3 million track and soccer complex was opened. Recently, the Tennessee General Assembly approved the construction of a $31.7 million building for the University’s College of Education. A $19 million expansion of the Health, Wellness, and Recreation Center was completed in 2008. Presently, the Univer-sity is involved in proposed or active capital projects totaling nearly $400 million. President McPhee is married to Elizabeth McPhee, and they have two children, Seneca and Sidney-Anthony.

Athletic Director Chris Massaro; Northern Colorado 1983 The landscape of college athletics has changed drasti-cally over the past decade and that renovation also has been demonstrated at Middle Tennessee, particularly during the four-plus years since Chris Massaro was named director of athletics on April 8, 2005.

Proving to be a true visionary, Massaro has helped revolutionize the Blue Raiders’ athletic department while helping pave the way for even greater success in future years. During his short but highly successful reign, Massaro has overseen unprecedented success not only in the university’s athletic programs but also in regard to academic success, facility upgrades, and a proven record of hiring coaches who have thrived under his watch. Under Massaro’s leadership, the Blue Raiders have captured the Sun Belt’s all-sports trophy three times in five years. Since his arrival, Massaro has enhanced the Blue Raiders’ broad-based, 17-sport programs. Among the accomplishments included in the last four years: •TheAthleticDepartmenthascaptured20SunBelt Conference championships and earned 14 coach of the year honors. •Theathleticprogramhashadarecord18na-tionally televised events during his tenure. • MiddleTennessee’s football teamearnedanat-large invitation to the Motor City Bowl in 2006, the first bowl appearance during the Division I era, then picked up a second invitation in 2009 to the New Orleans Bowl. • The women’s volleyball team reached theSweet 16 for the first time in 2007 and has made four straight NCAA appearances. •Themen’sgolfteamreceiveditsfirst-everat-large invitation into the East Regional in 2008 and subsequently advanced to the National Champi-onship where they finished 15th in the country. They backed up that effort with another NCAA regional in 2009 after winning the SBC title. • The women’s basketball team appeared inback-to-back NCAA Tournaments in 2006 and 2007 and returned again in 2009. The team nar-rowly missed reaching the Sweet 16 in 2007 after earning a No. 5 seed. • TheMiddleTennessee tennisdoubles teamof Marco Born and Andreas Siljestrom won the National Championship in 2007 – the first NCAA doubles title in Athletic Department history. •TheMiddleTennesseetrackteamshavecom-bined for four conference titles and the 2007 men’s outdoor squad finished No. 21 in the nation while the 2009 women’s indoor team ranked tied for 30th. • TheBlueRaiderbaseball teamcapturedtheregular season and tournament championship in 2009 and advanced to the NCAAs. Massaro’s success at Middle Tennessee doesn’t

stop with the athletic teams. There has been a tre-mendous track record for hiring quality coaches with head football coach Rick Stockstill, women’s head basketball coach Rick Insell, and men’s golf coach Whit Turnbow – and all Massaro hires – each earning Sun Belt Coach of the Year in their first sea-sons. In all, Massaro’s guidance has provided coach-es with the resources to produce 20 conference titles, 21 NCAA postseason appearances, one Sun Belt Conference Athlete of the Year, and 14 Coach of the Year awards. Academic enhancement has also skyrocketed under Massaro’s leadership. Massaro, who was ap-pointed to a panel on APR Improvement Plans for the 2007 NCAA Convention, inherited a football program with a national-low score of 812 and saw it increase to a current 990 (on a 1,000-point scale) in 2009. As a whole, the Athletic Department has im-proved from a 908 score when Massaro was hired to an impressive cumulative (four years) score of 951 in 2007-08. All 17 Middle Tennessee sports teams achieved passing marks of 925 or higher in 2006-07 with four teams turning in a perfect mark of 1,000. In 2007-08, 16 of 17 teams topped the 925 mark. Massaro, who spent 20 years at the University of South Carolina prior to his appointment at Middle Tennessee, also overhauled the annual Blue Raider Athletic Association’s annual giving program, which resulted in a record number of members and finan-cial giving in 2008, indicating the fourth such year record numbers have been realized. The annual campaign has improved 40 percent since his arrival. Facility upgrades also have been at the top of Massaro’s impressive list of accomplishments. He completed a $6 million capital campaign for the new baseball stadium and initiated a series of major renovations to existing athletic facilities during the previous three years, including a state-of-the-art soccer and track complex. Most recently, a state-of-the-art golf performance center was completed in December 2008. In the midst of numerous upgrades, Massaro also has initiated generous contributions that made it possible to install a new synthetic surface in Floyd Stadium for the 2006 season. Additionally, new vid-eoboards – one for football and two inside Murphy Center – were installed in 2007. In a span of five years Massaro’s hiring practices have been regarded as excellent. On Dec. 12, 2005, he made his highest profile hire when he selected Stockstill to take over the football program. Stockstill became just the second head coach in the I-A era and led the Blue Raiders to a league championship and a bowl ap-pearance in his first season. Two days following his hiring, Mas-saro was pressed into action to find a replacement to lead the nation-ally recognized women’s basketball program. Massaro made his first hire when he brought on board legend-ary high school coach Rick Insell to take over the program. Both Insell and Stockstill won championships in their first seasons on the job. Massaro has also made a significant upgrade in the Blue Raider football

schedule. During the summer of 2005, he an-nounced a home game in 2007 that made Virginia the first team from the highly regarded ACC to vis-it Floyd Stadium, and then quickly added a second ACC member when Maryland agreed to make the trip to Murfreesboro in 2008 and the Blue Raiders rewarded him with a 24-14 upset. On his 100th day on the job, Massaro made one of his biggest announcements: a five-year contract with the Uni-versity of Memphis to play football that started in 2007. The Tigers became the first in-state Division I-A (FBS) football team to play the Blue Raiders in Murfreesboro. Massaro has also worked out a home-and-home series with Mississippi State that saw the Bulldogs come to Floyd Stadium in 2009 – making them the first SEC program to play in a Sun Belt stadium – and nearby Georgia Tech that will have the Yellow Jackets coming to Murfrees-boro in 2011. He has also inked a home-and-home with Minnesota that will see the Golden Gophers come to Murfreesboro to begin the 2010 season on Thursday, Sept. 2. In March 2008, Massaro made another big move when he announced a four-game series with neighboring rival Vanderbilt of the SEC. The series begins in 2015 and the teams will play twice in Murfreesboro and twice in Nashville. The Glenwood Springs, Colo., native joined the South Carolina staff under the Ohio University sport administration program in 1985. Massaro helped usher the Gamecocks into the SEC and learned under legendary athletic director Dr. Mike McGee. Massaro earned his bachelor’s degree in busi-ness administration from the University of North-ern Colorado in 1983 and his master’s degree in sport administration from Ohio University in 1986. At UNC, Massaro was a five-year football team member. Massaro is also heavily involved in community service projects and organizations. He is a mem-ber of the Red Cross Board, the City Golf Commis-sion and the Rutherford County Sports Council Ex-ecutive Committee, and he served on the search committee for the Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce president. Massaro and his wife, Cindy, have four children: Hank, Lainey, Rachel, and Ben.

Throughout the recent history of Middle Tennessee track and field, there have been two constants - vet-eran coach Dean Hayes and a legacy of championship performances. A reknowned track and field coach both in college and professional circles, Dean Hayes has gained great respect since coming to Middle Ten-nessee 45 years ago. His men’s teams dominated the Ohio Valley Conference, and the women’s teams have duplicated that success since Hayes took over the program in 1987. Both squads have continued their successes in the Sun Belt Conference, capturing 15 of the 38 indoor and outdoor titles for which they have been eligi-ble since joining the league 10 years ago. Overall, Hayes has guided the pro-gram to 29 OVC titles, 16 Sun Belt championships, and 18 NCAA Top 25 finishes. Forty-nine of his ath-letes have earned 85 All-American honors, four have become national champions and a number of them have gone on to compete inter-nationally in the Olympic Games, World University Games and Pan-American Games. There could have been more awards, but Middle Ten-nessee did not sport a track pro-gram from 1987 to 1990. Hayes has added 14 Sun Belt Coach of the Year awards to comple-ment his 15 OVC Coach of the Year honors, which included 10 in a row

from 1977 to 1986. He was inducted into the Blue Raider Hall of Fame in 1982 and the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame in 1994. Hayes became a member of the Illinois Sports Hall of Fame in 1993 and was inducted into the Mason-Dixon Athletic Club Hall of Fame in March 2005, and in

December of 2008 he was inducted into the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. In 2009, he was honored by his col-legiate alma mater, Lake Forest be-ing inducted into the Lake Forrest Hall of Fame. Following the 1981 season, the Division I Track and Field Coaches Association voted Hayes the NCAA Outdoor Coach of the Year. Hayes serves as president of the TFCA in 1982-83. In his first attempt at a Sun Belt Championship, Hayes delivered. The Middle Tennessee women took first place in Miami, Fla., in 2000, and Hayes earned his first Sun Belt Coach of the Year award. Since taking its place in the Sun Belt full-time in 2000-01 academic year, Middle Tennessee has cap-tured 14 of the 34 league titles in indoor and outdoor track and field. Hayes and his charges were instru-mental in capturing the school’s first-ever Vic Bubas Cup, the league’s all-sports trophy, in 2001, when the track program’s garnered three SBC titles. The teams played a significant role in Middle Tennessee winning the Bubas Cup in 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010 as well. Hayes has indeed put Middle Ten-nessee on the world map in terms of collegiate track and field. However, Hayes’ experience is not limited to the collegiate level. He has coached several teams spon-

Because of Hayes’ interna-tional success, numerous foreign athletes have sought out Middle Tennessee as their college of choice. He coached NCAA cham-

pions Tommy Haynes (1974) and Barry McClure (1972, 1973) as well as NCAA high hurdles champion Di-onne Rose (1994) and his most re-cent national champion, Blue Raid-er Mardy Scales in the 100 meters (2003). Hayes also guided Roland McGhee to nine All-American hon-ors and both McClure and Greg Ar-tis won All-American honors seven times.

Since first coming to Middle Tennessee eight years ago, Keith Vroman has been an integral part in the growth and success of the Blue Raider distance run-ners. MT distance runners have won 15 individual con-ference indoor/outdoor titles from the 800 to 10,000 meter events while also earning a combined 33 second and third place finishes at Sun Belt Championships. Under Vroman’s instruction, Middle Tennessee run-ners have rewritten the school record books, including all female indoor/outdoor times and five of the nine men’s standards. At Sun Belt Cross Country Championships, 13 ath-letes have been named to all-conference rosters in his tenure. Along with head coach Dean Hayes, Vroman helped lead the 2009 men’s team to its first conference cross country title in 26 years. The Middle Tennessee women’s cross country team has placed second in the conference in each of the previous two seasons. In 2009, Zamzam Sangau and Festus Chemaoi became the first two Blue Raiders to run at the NCAA Cross Country Championships in 38 years. Entering his 10th year of coaching, Vroman brings experience steeped in tradition, Eastern Kentucky and Grand Valley State. Vroman’s was hired full-time during the summer of

2007 and helps in all areas of recruiting and meet man-agement. The Ludington, Mich., native earned his bachelor’s in physical education, his M.A. in health education and an M.S. in sports administration the same year at Eastern Kentucky, where he competed in cross country and the steeplechase.

MONROE, La. -The slippery and wet conditions of Selman Field in Monroe, La. were not enough to keep the Middle Ten-nessee men’s cross country team from taking their first ever Sun Belt Conference title. Led by the efforts of individual runner-up Festus Chemaoi and fifth-place William Songock, all Blue Raider scorers placed in the top 11. Chemaoi completed the 8,000-meter course in 26:42.14, and Songock came in at 27:32.13. The Blue Raiders finished with 36 team points to defeat second-place South Alabama with 43 points. Hayes received his first-ever men’s cross country Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year award. Newcomer Chris Mason ran an inspired race at his first con-ference meet. The SUNY Delhi transfer finished eighth overall to earn his first All-Sun Belt award at Middle Tennessee. What was perhaps more impressive was Mason ran a majority of the race shoeless upon losing both in the first mile. Senior Isaac Biwott earned the second all-conference cross country award of his career by taking ninth in a time of 27:42.24. Biwott first won the award in 2007 at the cham-pionships in Bowling Green, Ky. David Emery rounded out the Middle Tennessee scorers, placing 11th with a time of 28:00.88.

For the second season in a row, the Blue Raiders matched their best-ever finish at a conference championship meet, taking second at the 2009 Sun Belt Cross Country Champi-onships. Led by senior Zamzam Sangau, the Blue Raiders recorded their lowest team score in the history of the program, 65. Sangau placed third overall on the 5,000-meter course in a time of 19:49.09, Marla Bailey finish fourth in 19:58.33, and Jackie Serem finished in seventh in 20:30.52. All there were honored all-conference runners. The ladies were defeated by defending 2008 Sun Belt Champion Western Kentucky, which recorded 53 points.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - For the first time in school history, Middle Tennessee had a male and a female runner qualify for the NCAA Cross Country National Championships. Za-mzam Sangau and Festus Chemaoi garnered qualification at the NCAA South Regional Championships in Tuscaloosa, Ala., on November 14. Sangau became the first women in program history to qualify for the NCAA Championships. The Uganda native finished fifth place overall on the 6,000-meter course in a time of 20:30.22. She came in second in the individuals with a team standings. It was the second consecutive season Sangau earned all-region honors. Chemaoi qualified with an at-large bid by finishing 13th overall at the NCAA South Regional Championships.

2009 Season Review

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Perfect weather conditions awaited Middle Tennessee’s top cross country runners, Zamzam San-gau and Festus Chemaoi, as they concluded the 2009 cam-paign at the NCAA National Championships in Terre Haute, Ind. Sangau, the first female in school history to qualify for the NCAA Cross Country Championships, finished 143rd of 254 entries in a time of 21:36.0 in the women’s 6,000-meter race. The Kampala, Uganda, native ran strong with the top-20 competitors for the first half mile before settling back in the main pack. Chemaoi finished 146th out of 250 in a respectable time of 31:21.1 on the men’s 10,000 meter course. Chemaoi was the first Blue Raider men’s runner to participate in the NCAA Championships since Richard Russo in 1971. As a junior, Chemaoi will have another opportunity to qualify next year for the NCAA Cross Country Championships.

GoBlueRaiders.com is a fast and accurate Internet source for official coverage of Blue Raider athletics. Regardless of where you are or what time of day it is, you can access up-to-date informa-tion on your favorite Blue Raider sports or athletes. GoBlueRaiders.com has grown to average more than 14.9 million page views a year, with the average visitor spend-ing nearly five minutes on the site each day. The site has seen in excess of 3.1 million visitors since January of 2004. After three years of opera-tion under a national sports Web site provider, GoBlueR-aiders.com moved to a to-tal in-house operation with a new design and format. Since 2001, the Athletic Communications office has managed the site and been responsible for all content, designs, service and up-dates. The Web site, named Best Collegiate Sports Web site in 2002 by the Tennes-sean, underwent a com-plete renovation in 2006. Thanks to members of the athletic communi-cations staff, pre-game releases, game stories, features, up-to-date sta-tistics, photos and re-sults for all 17 Blue Raid-er sports are regularly posted to the site. Add online ticketing by Ticketmaster and links to Blue Raider alumni and spirit groups and you have the most complete source of information about Middle Tennes-see athletics anywhere. Full-motion video is featured as part of a new Internet streaming package introduced in the summer of 2007. The Web site has become a valuable tool in promoting each and every Middle Tennes-see scholarship sport. Custom sites for recent standouts such as Dewon Brazelton, Court-ney Mitchell, Dwone Hicks, Patrice Holmes, Amber Holt and Chrissy Givens have been integrated into the GoBlueRaiders.com Web Site.

The site also features complete bios on players and coaches, printable monthly event calendars, press conference audio and video, and photo galleries of many events and games. In partnertship with Yahoo! Sports, Middle Tennessee broadcasts play-by-play of all football, men’s and women’s basketball, and baseball games online.
