NJCAA Top 20 Poll The weekly NJCAA Top 20 Football Poll will rank the top teams in the nation and will be released each Tuesday during the regular season beginning Sept. 7th.
Poll InformationThe NJCAA Football Poll ranks the top 20 team in the NJCAA each week. NJCAA Football Panel Directors (see previous page for names) select their top 20 teams each week, which are then formulated into the weekly rankings. After five contests, a Panel Director may only vote a team from their district No. 1 if they are undefeated. A Panel Director may vote a team from their district No. 2 at any time during the season.
The weekly poll will be released nationally on the NJCAA website (www.njcaa.org) and sent to various media outlets on each poll day at approximately 1 p.m. (Mountain Time). This year’s poll dates are as follows: Sept. 7, Sept. 14, Sept. 21, Sept. 28, Oct. 5, Oct. 12, Oct. 19, Oct. 26, Nov. 2, Nov. 9, Nov. 15 (Monday - Final Regular Season Poll). The Championship Poll and the release of All-Americans will be done following the week following the completion of all post-season bowl games.

Blinn College on the Hunt for Third NJCAA Football Title in Five Years
Bucs Enter 2010 Season with No. 1 Ranking
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Blinn College (Texas) begins the 2010 NJCAA Football season at No. 1 in the NJCAA Preseason Top 25, released on July 28, 2010. The defending national champions will face a very difficult schedule this season. However, a talented roster and a veteran coach gives Blinn a legitimate chance to claim the program’s third national championship in five years (2006, 2009).
Blinn is followed in the preseason rankings by Arizona Western College, Fort Scott Community College (Kan.), who Blinn defeated last season in the NJCAA title game, Navarro College (Texas) and Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College.
The Buccaneers return eight starters (3 offense / 5 defense) from last season’s championship team and they also welcome a NCAA Division I transfer at the quarterback position in Justin Tuggle (Boston College). Tuggle started three games for the Eagles in 2009. Top returners for Blinn include Honorable Mention All-American and First-Team All-Southwest JC Football Conference linebacker DextrellSimmons and offensive lineman Sean Robertson who started 10 games in 2009 for the Bucs.
Brad Franchione is back for his sixth season at Blinn. The son of former Alabama, Texas Christian, Texas A&M, and New Mexico headcoach Dennis Franchione, Brad has led the Buccaneer program to a 46-10 record, including two NJCAA Football Championships and three SWJCFC titles. He has also twice been named the NJCAA Football Coach of the Year and last season was the American Community College Football Coaches Association Coach of the Year.
Blinn opens the season on Saturday, August 28th against No. 3 Fort Scott (Kan.) in Brenham, Texas, in a rematch of the 2009 NJCAA Football Championship Game at the Citizen’s Bank Bowl. The Bucs won the title on a last second punt-return for a touchdown by Chad Froechnicht to give Blinn a 31-26 victory.
Butler Community College (Kan.), East Mississippi Community College, Snow College (Utah), Ellsworth Community College (Iowa) and Grand Rapids Community College (Mich.) round out the preseason Top 10.
2010 NJCAA Football Season Begins Aug. 26-28The 2010 season kicks off August 26th-28th with several important games slated for play. Action begins Thursday, August 26th, with the annual challenge series between the Kansas Jayahawk Community College Conference and the Southwest JC Football Conference. In the first game of the series, No. 4 Navarro (Texas) will travel north to face No. 6 Butler (Kan.) in Wichita, Kan. Also on the 26th the Minnesota College Athletic Conference begins play with their Kickoff Classic on the campus of St. Cloud State University. No. 20 Rochester (Minn.) opens the event against Northland (Minn.).
All eyes will be on Brenham, Texas on August 28th when No. 1 Blinn and No. 3 Fort Scott take the field in a rematch of last year’s title game. Other intriguing matchups on the first Saturday of the season include No. 14 Tyler (Texas) at No. 18 Coffeyville(Kan.). The MCAC Kickoff Classic gets into full swing with four games on Saturday all at Husky Stadium in St. Cloud, Minn.
Nine All-Americans from 2009 Slated to Return to NJCAA Gridiron in 2010 The 2010 NJCAA football season will be an exciting one as several 2009 All-Americans are set to return to their teams for 2010. On the offensive side of the ball, Grand Rapids (Mich.) returns two All-Americans in First-Team offensive lineman Dion Howze and Honorable Mention return specialist Juwan Hemphill. A lot of attention will be given to Arizona Western running back Reggie Bullock who earned 2nd Team All-American honors last season. Bullock ranked second in the NJCAA last year with 1,417 rushing yards and 20 TDs. Lastly, Rochester (Minn.) wide receiver Chris Hicks returns to the Yellow Jackets after earning Honorable Mention All-American honors with 38 receptions, 797 yards and 10 TDs.
First-Team All-American defensive back J.D. Ratliff of Southwest Mississippi returns after leading the nation with 10 interceptions last season. Other defense All-Americans returning this season include Blinn linebacker Dextrell Simmons, Louisburg (N.C.) defensive back Jamel Coles, Georgia Military linebacker Antonio Mitchum and Scottsdale (Ariz.) punter Josh Hubner.
One Lost, One Gained — 69 NJCAA Football Teams Will Take the Field in 2010The 2010 NJCAA Football season will see the departure of Rock Valley College (Ill.) and the addition of Lon Morris College (Texas). Rock Valley ended its football program due to budget issues. RVC had fielded a football team for over 40 years.
As one long standing program ended its football program, another NJCAA college decided to reinstate football. Lon Morris College in Jacksonville, Texas will resurrect its football program this year after being absent for over 60 years. Lon Morris is one of seven new football programs set to begin in 2010 across the entire college football landscape (NCAA DI, DII, DIII, NAIA, NJCAA). The LMC Bearcats will compete as an Independent this season and will operate as a ‘club’ team.
Eight Teams Enter 2010 with New Head Coaches Several NJCAA Football programs are under new leadership this season. A total of eight NJCAA football programs will be directed by new head coaches.

The league is split into two divisions (North & South) and the league ends its season with a four-team playoff for the conference title. COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – From time to time a football season is defined by just one play, a heroic effort that saves a team from elimination and vaults them to the pinnacle of success. Such a play took place at the 2009 NJCAA Football Championship Game in the inaugural Citizen’s Bank Bowl in Pittsburg, Kan., on Dec. 6th that will forever define the 2009 National Championship season for Blinn College (Texas).
Down 26-24 to No. 1 ranked Fort Scott (Kan.) with just under 30 seconds remaining in the game, Blinn’s Chad Froechtenicht fielded a Fort Scott punt on his own 16 yard line, avoided the first wave of Greyhound tacklers and sprinted 84 yards for the national title clinching touchdown.
The 31-26 win over Fort Scott gave Blinn its fourth NJCAA Football Championship in program history (1995, 1996, 2006, 2009) and second in four years under head coach Brad Franchione. The win was extra special for Franchione as he is a native of Pittsburg, Kan., and was able to win the big game in front of many local supporters.
"For me to have the opportunity to come to the Citizens Bank Bowl in Pittsburg, Kansas, in front of my hometown crowd, it will forever be a special moment in my life," Franchione said.
The dramatic finish in the national title game ends another great year of NJCAA football. Blinn’s victory over Fort Scott puts the Bucs in the No. 1 slot of the final NJCAA Football rankings of the year with an 11-1 record.
The Greyhounds of Fort Scott, also 11-1, cap off a brilliant year with a No. 2 ranking. The 2009 season for Fort Scott included its first conference title in over 30 years and first-ever Region 6 Playoff Championship.
Navarro (Texas), East Mississippi, Arizona Western, Snow (Utah), GrandRapids (Mich.), Mississippi Gulf Coast, Ellsworth (Iowa) and Butler (Kan.) rounded out the top 10 of the final poll.
NOTE: As the highest ranking non-scholarship team in the final rankings, Grand Rapids (Mich.) is declared the 2009 NJCAA Football Non-Scholarship Champion by the NJCAA Football Coaches Association.

BLINN WINS NATIONAL TITLE VIA LAST SECOND PUNTRETURN FOR TOUCHDOWNFrom Blinn College Media Relations
PITTSBURG, Kan. - An 84-yard punt return for a touchdown by Chad Froechnicht with 15seconds remaining in the fourth quarter gave Blinn College (Texas) a 31-26 victory over FortScott Community College (Kan.) in the 2009 NJCAA Football Championship Game at the first-ever Citizen’s Bank Bowl Dec. 6 at Carnie Smith Stadium in Pittsburg, Kan.
"The first two punt returns, I ran to the right,” said Froechnicht. “So I thought they were going toover pursue. I hugged the ball, ran to the right a little and saw them all pursuing so I cut back. I think I got one or two blocks and I told myself ‘you're not stopping until you get in the end zone.”
The football national championship is Blinn’s fourth overall (1995, 96, 06, 09) and second underhead coach Brad Franchione who is a native of Pittsburg, Kan.
"For me to have the opportunity to come to the Citizens Bank Bowl in Pittsburg, Kansas, in frontof my hometown crowd, it will forever be a special moment in my life," Franchione said.
Blinn got on the scoreboard first when quarterback Cam Newton rushed for a 19-yard score. The Blinn defense then came up with a turnover and Billy Greer tacked on a 32-yard field goalto put Blinn up 10-0 early.
The Fort Scott Greyhounds then scored 26 unanswered points as quarterback Dominique Davisscored two touchdowns on one-yard quarterback keepers in the first half while Blinn gave up 85yards on nine penalties. As the rain started to fall, another Buccaneer mishap — a high snap ona punt — added a safety to the Fort Scott total. Kyle Ericson hit a 35-yard field goal and the
Greyhounds posted a 19-10 lead at halftime.
Fort Scott opened the scoring in the second half after a Blinn fumble as Davis scored his thirdtouchdown of the game on a 12-yard run.
Blinn’s defense then responded as Gadrian Muse intercepted a Davis pass on Blinn’s two- yard-line, which then led to a seven-play, 74-yard scoring drive capped by a 14-yard TD run by MikeHayes followed by a two-point conversion to cut the Greyhound lead to 26-18.
Hayes then scored in the fourth quarter from the nine-yard line and after a failed two-pointconversion the Bucs trailed 26-24 with just over five minutes left in the contest.
It looked as though the Greyhounds had secured the win when Fort Scott stopped Newton andthe Bucs on a fourth and five with 2:06 remaining. However, the Buccaneer defense forced onefinal punt, which proved to be the biggest play of the game.
Blinn, who entered the game ranked second in the final NJCAA Football Poll of the regularseason, ends the season 11-1. Fort Scott, ranked No. 1 entering the title game, also ends 2009at 11-1.

GLENDALE EDGES DEAN 10-9 IN 2009 VALLEY OF THE SUN BOWLGLENDALE, Ariz. - Glendale Community College (Ariz.) slipped past Dean College (Mass.) 10-9on Dec. 5 in the 29th edition of the Valley of the Sun Bowl, which was played at GCC’s Matt O. Hanhila Stadium.
Glendale scored in the first quarter on a field goal by Jordan Sanchez and in the second quarter on a 20-yard touchdown run by tailback D’Angelo Jones, who was named the game’s Most ValuablePlayer. Jones had 11 carries for 56 yards and the lone touchdown of the game.
Both defenses dominated the game as both teams punted eight times. Glendale did have trouble keeping Dean quarterback Antony Baskersville in check as he nearly won the game for the Bulldogs in the final frame. He completed a 17-yard pass to William Brown but Brown was pushed out of the back of the endzone by Glendale defenders and was unable to get a foot down for the go-ahead touchdown.
Had Brown been able to score it would have given Dean a 13-10 lead. As a result, Dean settled forits third field goal from Long Ding (35, 35 and 29 yards) and Glendale held on for a 10-9 win.
The win was Glendale’s 11th in the history of the Valley of the Sun Bowl and moved their final record for 2009 to 7-5. The loss ended Dean’s season with a 9-2 overall record.

NAVARRO RUNS OVER MISSISSIPPI GULF COASTIN HEART OF TEXAS BOWLFrom Mississippi Gulf Coast Media Relations
COPPERAS COVE, Texas - Navarro College (Texas) rushed for 336 yards and took advantage of three Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College turnovers to win the ninth annual C.H.A.M.P.S.Heart of Texas Bowl 37-26 Dec. 5 at Bulldawg Stadium in Copperas Cove, Texas.
"They're a very good football team," said Mississippi Gulf Coast head coach Steve Campbell. "I knew it would come down to turnovers and it did. I'm still very proud of our guys' effort against a quality opponent."
Navarro jumped out to a 27-10 halftime lead on two touchdowns by Derrick Hall. The Navarro running back paced his team's offense with 196 yards on 18 carries and three touchdowns, which earned him the game’s MVP award.
Gulf Coast scored 10 unanswered points in the third quarter to cut the Navarro lead to 27-20 and threatened to tie the game. But on the second play of the fourth quarter, Bulldog quarterback Greg Jenkins hit wide receiver Kelvin Bolden on a slant and appeared headed to the end zone for a 77-yard touchdown. However, Navarro linebacker Alfred Dupree stripped the ball out of Bolden'shands at the 10 yard line and the ball was recovered by Navarro in the end zone for a touchback.
From there, Navarro scored 10 points (25 yard field goal by Jueventino Sanchez and a 23 yardtouchdown run by Hall) to seal the victory.
“This was great how we came back after they (Mississippi Gulf Coast) made some adjustments athalftime,” Navarro head coach Nick Bobeck said. “Then we made our own adjustments on defenseand offense and we were able to make some big plays. It was a great, great win.”

SNOW EDGES GRAND RAPIDS IN TOP OF THE MOUNTAINS BOWLFrom Snow College Media Relations
SANDY, Utah - Snow College’s (Utah) Tyson Church caught a nine-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Quinn Mecham with 45 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter to win the 2009 Zions Bank Top of the Mountain Bowl 41-37 over Grand Rapids Community College on Dec. 5 in Sandy, Utah. The sixth annual Top of the Mountain Bowl was played at Rio Tinto Stadium for the second consecutive year.
"I was hoping Quinn (Mecham) would hit me and when he did I knew it was my job to get in the end zone," said Church.
The win for the Badgers comes after two straight losses in the Top of the Mountains Bowl the past two years.
"That was an amazing game for both teams," said Snow head coach Steve Coburn. "We expected it would be a battle and it was definitely a battle."
Snow started off the scoring in the first quarter, putting together a 10-play drive that ended with a Church run for a touchdown.
Grand Rapids quickly answered back with quarterback Casey Therriault throwing the first of his four touchdowns to receiver Demonte Collins with five minutes remaining in the first quarter. The missed extra point made the game 7-6.
After Snow added a second quarter field goal by kicker Ryan McNamara, Grand Rapids took its first lead of the game on a four-yard Juwan Hemphill touchdown run.
That was the first of eight lead changes. Both teams racked up more than 460 yards totaloffense and both quarterbacks threw for over 350 yards in blizzard conditions.
The stats for the game showed a lot of parity between the teams. Mecham threw for 352 yards and four touchdowns and ran for 54 yards, which earned him the Offensive Player of the Game honor for the Badgers. Grand Rapids' Therriault threw for 359 yards and four touchdowns and ran for 19 yards as well.
Mazi Ogbonna caught four balls for Snow, racking up 96 yards and a touchdown. Church caught seven passes for 69 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 61 yards and a touchdown.
On the receiving end Grand Rapids’ Brandon Newbern hauled in five passes for 160 yards and a touchdown and Collins caught 10 passes for 127 yards and three touchdowns to earn Offensive Player of the Game honors for the Raiders.

EAST MISSISSIPPI GETS SCHOOL RECORD 11TH WIN WITHVICTORY IN MISSISSIPPI BOWLFrom East Mississippi Community College Sports Information
BILOXI, Miss. - The Lions of East Mississippi Community College capped its most successful football season in school history by defeating Arizona Western College 27-24 Dec. 6 in the 2009 Mississippi Bowl played at Indian Stadium in Biloxi, Miss.
With the victory in the second annual bowl event, head coach Buddy Stephens’ 11-1 Lions established a new all-time school standard for most wins in a season.
East Mississippi’s first bowl appearance in 46 years began in spectacular fashion, as sophomore wide receiver Derrick Steele returned the opening kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown. Steele helped put the Lions on top 13-0 later in the period by taking a Randall Mackey screen pass 56 yards to the end zone with 5:41 remaining in the opening quarter.
Arizona Western got their first points from freshman Reggie Bullock on a 1-yard TD run. Mackey then threw for his second touchdown of the first quarter by connecting with sophomore Cedrick Blanks on a 27-yard pass and a 20-7 lead.
Arizona Western scored twice in the second quarter to cut EMCC’s lead to 20-17 heading into halftime.
AWC’s Reggie Bullock ran for a 36-yard score to start the third quarter to give the Matadors a 24-20 lead. Entering the contest as the NJCAA leader in rushing yards per game (162.1 yds/gm), Bullock finished with 116 yards on 29 carriers, and scored his 20th rushing touchdown.
After a missed Mattador field goal, the Lions went on a 15-play, 80-yard scoring drive that culminated with Mackey finding Lance Lewis on a 5-yard TD pass. The eventual game-winning play resulted in Lewis’ 16th scoring grab of the season and Mackey’s 32nd touchdown toss of 2009.
The EMCC defense stepped up in the fourth quarter and secured the school’s first-ever 11-win season with a pair of pass interceptions over the final four minutes of the contest.
With three receptions for 68 yards on the day, including the 56-yard scoring grab following his game-opening 90-yard kickoff return, Steele was named EMCC’s Offensive MVP for the game. Sophomore defensive end Claude Davis was chosen the Lions’ Defensive MVP.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -– The NJCAA football rushing leader and a top tackler in 2009 were selected as the NJCAA Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year. Fort Scott Community College (Kan.) sophomore running back Jasmin Hopkins was awarded the offensive honors, while Navarro College (Texas) linebacker Brad Graham received the defensive award.
The 2009 season marks the 20th consecutive year that the NJCAA Football Coaches Association has selected a player of the year. Since 2000, an award has been given to both an offensive and defensive player.
Jasmin HopkinsRunning Back (5-9, 185 lbs.) Fort Scott Community College (Kan.)
A native of Stanley, N.C., Hopkins posted the second-most rushing yards by an NJCAA running back in 10 years while helping guide the Fort Scott Greyhounds to their first Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference title in 35 years and their first Region 6 title ever. The Greyhounds played in the NJCAA Football Championship Game season for the first time in over 35 years where they fell in final seconds 31-26 to Blinn College (Texas).
Hopkins led the NJCAA in rushing yards with 1,931, which is the second-best mark by a player since Lackawanna College (Pa.) running back Alan Jones rushed for 2,069 yards in 2000. Jocques Crawford of Cisco College (Texas) rushed for 1,935 yards in
2007 and won that season’s Offensive Player of the Year honor.
Hopkins also led in the nation in rushing yards per game with 160.9 and his 16 rushing touchdowns tied for fifth. His 102 points from 17 total touchdowns ranked eighth in the NJCAA in scoring while his 1,931 rushing yards ranked 15th in total offense.
Hopkins is currently continuing his education and football career at Northern Illinois University.
Brad GrahamLinebacker (6-3, 230 lbs.) Navarro College (Texas)
Graham, a native of Austin, Texas, was the Defensive Player of the Year in the Southwest JC Football Conference while leading Navarro College (Texas) to its second consecutive regular season league title. The Bulldogs also spent two weeks at the No. 1 post in the NJCAA / JC Football.com Poll. Navarro advanced to the C.H.A.M.P.S. Heart of Texas Bowl where the defeated Mississippi Gulf
Coast Community College 37-26.
For the season, Graham tallied 96 tackles (62 solo, 34 assisted), 13 tackles for loss, one sack and three forced fumbles. He also had four interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown.
Graham is the third consecutive player from the SWJCFC to take home Player of the Year honors. Last year, Blinn’s Terrance Cain won the offensive award – as did Cisco’s Jocques Crawford in 2007. He is the first Navarro player to ever receive the award.
Graham has successfully transferred to the University of North Texas where is will suit up for the Mean Green football program.

2009 NJCAA COACH OF THE YEAR
WACO, TEXAS - Blinn College (Texas) head coach Brad Franchione was named the 2009 NJCAA Football Coaches Association and the American Community College Football Coaches Association Coach of the Year. The awards were presented to Franchione at the American Football Coaches Association Coach of the Year Dinner in January at the 2010 AFCA Convention in Orlando, Fla.
"To win a national championship and have my fellow coaches honor me as Coach of the Year is a supreme honor," Franchione said. "The award has my name on it, but it is really a testament to all the great people in our program: our student-athletes, our coaches, our college administration, faculty and staff. That is what makes it truly a team effort."
The 2009 season was Franchione’s fifth year at the helm of Buccaneer program, and his 15th in college football. He guided Blinn to an 11-1 overall record, the Southwest Junior College Football Conference (SWJCFC) title and the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) national title in 2009. In addition his 2009 team was named the Junior College Team of the Year by FieldTurf®.
In his five years (2005-2009) at Blinn, Franchione has amassed a 46-10 record highlighted by two NJCAA National Championships (2006, 2009). In his second season as head coach, Franchione was named the NJCAA Football Coaches Association Coach of the Year, SWJCFC Coach of the Year, the American Football Monthly Schutt Sports Coach of the Year and the inaugural Sportexe® Football Coach of the Year after leading Blinn to a 12-0 mark, the SWJCFC title and the 2006 NJCAA National Championship.
In 2008, Blinn finished the season with a 9-3 record, with an appearance in the Heart of Texas Bowl. Franchione has coached 16 All-Americans during his tenure at Blinn, including four on this year's list and the 2008 NJCAA Offensive Player of the Year, quarterback Terrance Cain, who now plays for the University of Utah.
Franchione came to Blinn in 2005 from Texas A&M University-Commerce where he was the defensive line coach. He was also an assistant coach at Bacone College (2003-2004), the University of Tennessee-Martin (2002), the University of West Alabama (2001-2002), East Central University (1999-2001), and Fort Scott Community College (1998). He was a graduate assistant at Arkansas State University (1996-1998), and a student assistant coach at the University of New Mexico (1992-1996) where his father Dennis Franchione was the head coach.
About the ACCFCA: Community college football coaches are among the very best in the profession. In recent years, there have been two organizations, the California Community College Football Coaches Association and the National Junior College Football CoachesAssociation. Each organization had its own coach of the year. In 2000, the AFCA invited the organizations to meet at the AFCA Convention. Three national goals were set: to form a national community college football coaches' association, to study the possibility of a national championship game between the two organizations and to elect, yearly, a national coach of the year and to have that coachrecognized by the AFCA. Their initial goal, to create an umbrella coaches association, has been accomplished. In 2002, the American Community College Football Coaches Association selected its first national coach of the year, Michael White of Reedley College. Past winners of the ACCFCA Coach of the Year are: Troy Morrell, Butler Community College, 2003; Tim Hatten, Pearl River Community College, 2004; Don Dillon, American River College, 2005; John Featherstone, El Camino College, 2006; Jeff Chudy, Bakersfield College,2007; and Jeff Jordan, Butte College, 2008.

FORMER NJCAA PLAYERS SELECTED IN 2010 NFL DRAFT
9 FORMER NJCAA PLAYERS TAKEN IN ‘09 NFL DRAFT
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Several NFL teams looked to former NJCAA football players in planning for the future of their franchises at the 2010 NFL Draft held back in April in New York City. A total of nine former NJCAA football players were selected in the seven round event.
Leading the way was former Fort Scott (Kan.) defensive star Jason Pierre Paul who was selected in the first round (15th overall) by the New York Giants. Paul Pierre earned First-Team NJCAA All-American honors as well as First-Team Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference acco-lades. He spent the 2009 season at South Florida where he earned First-Team All-American honors from Pro Football Weekly in addition to First-Team All-Big East honors by the league's coaches, ESPN.com, Rivals.com and the Sporting News. Pierre Paul is the highest drafted former NJCAA player since Jeremy Shockey was selected 14th in the first round of the 2002 NFL Draft by the New York Giants. Shockey played one season at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College before transfer-ring to the University of Miami.
Former Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College defensive tackle Terrance Cody was selected in the second round with the 57th by the Baltimore Ravens. Cody earned NJCAA All-American honors in 2007 with in leading the Bulldogs to a share of the ‘07 National Championship. He spent the last two seasons at Alabama where he was instrumental part of the team’s ’09 BCS Championship run. He twice earned First-Team All-Southeastern Conference and Consensus All-American honors from numerous organizations during his two years at Alabama.
Former Iowa Central Community College player Amari Spievey was drafted 66th overall (Round 3) to the Detroit Lions. Spievey first attended the University of Iowa as freshman before transferring to Iowa Central for his sophomore year. In his only year at Iowa Central, Spievey was able to achieve First-Team Defense NJCAA All-American honors in 2007 by recording seven interceptions, including two returned for touchdowns. He then transferred back to Iowa where he was named First-Team All-Big Ten Conference. Larry Hart was selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the fifth round (143rd overall). Hart was a defensive star at Holmes Community College (Miss.). He was an all-conference selection in 2007 after recording 56 tackles and 11 tackles for loss. He transferred to Central Arkansas and was twice named an All-American in the FCS Subdivision.
The Cleveland Browns used their 160th pick of the draft (fifth round) on safety Larry Asante who began his collegiate career at Coffeyville Community College (Kan.) before reaching national stardom at the University of Nebraska. Asante earned NJCAA Honorable Mention All-American honors in 2006 after collecting 76 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, three blocked kicks along with an interception. After one season at Coffeyville he became a Husker where he started 36 games and was a First-Team All-Big 12 Conference selection in 2009 by Rivals.com.
Deji Karim was a star running back for Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College in ’05 and ’06, totaling over 1,800 yards and scored 25 touchdowns. He twice earned all-conference honors and successfully transferred to Southern Illinois where he earned All-American honors and finished third in the voting for the 2009 Walter Payton Award (FCS Heisman Trophy equivalent). Eugene Sims of Jones County Junior College (Miss.) and West Texas A&M University was selected in Round 6 (189th Overall) by the St. Louis Rams. The defensive line star moved on to West Texas A&M and racked up honors like two-time Lone Star Conference Defensive Lineman of the Year, AFCA Div. II First Team All-American and Associated Press Little America Third Team All-American. He recorded the fifth most sacks in a season at West Texas A&M. Jorrick Calvin, defensive back that played at East Central Community College (Miss.) and Troy University, was selected in Round 6 (201st Overall) by the Arizona Cardinals. In his first season at ECCC, Calvin picked off five passes. Upon transferring to Troy, he started 12 games at cornerback with 76 tackles.
The final former NJCAA athlete selected in the 2010 NFL draft was J'Marcus Webb, a 6'8"- 328 lbs offensive lineman from Navarro College (Texas) and West Texas A&M. Webb was selected with the 218th pick (7th round) by the Chicago Bears. Webb was a First-Team NJCAA All-American for the Navarro in 2007. He then transferred to West Texas A&M was named First-Team Daktronics, as well as a Don Hansen's Football Gazette First-Feam, All-America selec-tion in NCAA DII. Also in 2009, Webb was selected Third-Team Little All-American (Division II, III & NAIA) as voted on by the Associated Press.
NOTE: The highest drafted former NJCAA football player is Walter Jones who was taken with the sixth overall pick in the 1997 NFL Draft by the Seattle Seahawks. Jones was a standout at Holmes Community College (Miss.) before earning All-ACC honors at Florida State University…Mike Rozier, the 1980 Heisman Trophy winner and former Coffeyville Community College (Kan.) player, was the second overall selection in the 1984 NFL Supplemental Draft, which is a different draft the NFL conducts each summer. The Supplemental Draft accommodates players that do not enter the regular draft. Rozier opted to play in the USFL instead of the NFL and had to enter the Supplemental Draft in order to pursue an NFL career once the USFL folded.
