Bear Essentials Fitness stands apart from the average fitness center. We are an independent training facility that allows the client to come into a private location and train one-on-one with passionate, energetic and highly capable trainers. We also offer small group training (up to ten participants) and diverse classes such as yoga and joint mobility, as well as female combat cardio and co-ed boxing/Thai boxing. Our gym requires no membership fee. We feel that in order to help our clients make a lasting change; they need to feel that we the professionals are also invested in their desire to change. Most public facilities will charge a fee only to be disconnected from the member base. We are interested in helping anyone who is ready to improve their health and fitness, and one of the best ways we have found to accomplish this is through developing strong relationships with all of our members. Our gym further stands out from the typical facility. There are no mirrors, no machines, and no cardio equipment. These aren’t necessarily bad, but we feel that too many are allowed to coast through their training, or become hypnotized by what they see or do not see in their reflection. We are concerned with hard work and effort, and the client can expect that every time they walk through the doors. Whether you are on vacation or live in the area, stop in to check out our facility. We offer a dynamic and unique atmosphere unlike any other in the area.

BIKE M AIN EIf

you like riding road bikes, then

Central Maine is a great place to

be in the Spring, Summer or Fall.

Do you enjoy long solo rides on

quiet back roads, challenging group rides, maybe

a charity ride or race? No matter what, it’s

happening here in the Lewiston/Auburn area.

If you are spending time in Central Maine and want to

know where to ride, check out the Maine Cycling Club,

based in Auburn, Maine. The club boasts over 150 members

of all ability levels. They are a group of recreational

riders who get together regularly for road biking. New

riders are always welcome to join the fun. Road bikes are

recommended but not absolutely necessary.

Rides start in mid-April and continue into late September.

Weeknight rides leave from Auburn at 6pm most evenings

and there are often weekend destination rides. The club also

sponsors a Road Race weekend, a Time trial, a Cyclo-cross

race along with putting teams together for the Trek Across

Maine in June and the Dempsey Challenge in October.

Check out their website at www.MaineCyclingClub.com

for ride schedules, maps and activities. If you don’t have

access to a computer, call Rainbow Bicycle and Fitness at

BACK COUNTRY EXCURSIONSIf you’ve ever had the thought of starting your own

business and living your own passion, well Cliff Krolick has

been doing just that! In 1991, he founded one of the first

X-Country commercial mountain biking touring centers in

North America. Going on it’s 20th year, now a true labor of

love, Cliff offers and promises some of the best trail riding

in the eastern USA. He’s hand-built many of the 24 miles of

trails and there’s plenty of terrain for all riding abilities.

Something For EveryoneIf you’re a novice, Cliff has plenty of mountain bike rentals

and offers the most effective instruction that can be

found anywhere. He jokes as the locals know him as the

instructor that teaches the teachers. He’s one of the true

guru’s of the sport and called the saint of singletrack

Portland Discovery Land & Sea Tours has been offering tours of Portland for over 13 years. As a locally owned and operated company, they take pride in showing visitors all that Maine’s largest city has to offer. Whether you’re looking for a city tour, harbor cruise or both, Portland Discovery has it covered! The most popular tour Portland Discovery offers is the Land & Sea Tour. This combo tour is a great way to maximize your day in Portland. For just $33, you’ll get a 90-minute Trolley Tour and a 90-minute Lighthouse Lovers Cruise on Casco Bay. The 2010 season begins May 15th and will continue right through the end of October. In July & August trolley tours run at 9:30, 11:15, 1:00, 2:45, and 4:30. Harbor cruises are offered at 11:30, 1:30, 3:30 and 6:30. Tours will operate daily through October 24th, however the schedule does change a bit after Labor Day. Though not required, reservations are strongly recommended in-season. For those looking for a true “Maine adventure” a trip to Eagle Island may be the answer. This adventure includes a narrated cruise through beautiful Casco Bay, plus an opportunity to explore Eagle Island. While en route to the island, you’ll cruise through scenic back channels and quiet coves, past island cottages and quaint fishing villages. On the island you will have an opportunity to tour the former summer estate of famed arctic explorer, Admiral Robert E. Peary, the 1st man to reach the North Pole.

Portland Schooner Company has been making memories for Casco Bay visitors since 2002. Owned and operated by husband and wife team Scott Reischmann and Michelle Thresher, they offer an authentic, Old World sailing experience from May through October aboard Portland’s only historic windjammers. Whether you’re looking to experience the Portland waterfront from a unique perspective or just hoping to step back to a simpler time for a couple hours, Portland Schooner Company offers an experience you don’t want to miss. The adventure begins aboard one of their classic wooden schooners, Wendameen or Bagheera. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, both schooners were designed by famed naval architect John G. Alden in the early 1900s and built by some of the best craftsmen in the world at the shipyards of East Boothbay Maine. Two-hour sails depart from the Maine State Pier in Portland’s Old Port and are offered four times daily, presenting visitors with a perfect vantage point for viewing Portland’s unforgettable sights and sounds – from lighthouses and seabirds to seals and the rocky coastline. The friendly, professional crew is not only there to provide you with a safe trip … they’re happy to share a bit of Casco Bay history and trivia. You’re invited to join in any way you’d like: hoisting the sails alongside a deckhand, taking a turn at the ship’s wheel, or just relaxing and enjoying the ocean breeze and salt air. And you’re welcome to bring food and drink, including beer and wine, aboard. The cost for a two-hour sail is just $35 for adults and $10 for children. Though not required, reservations are strongly encouraged. If you’ve got more time to spend on Casco Bay, Portland Schooner Company also offers charters for family or corporate functions, lunchtime lobster bakes on scenic Cow Island, and overnight excursions where you can spend an evening nestled in a quiet island anchorage.

Visitors find it difficult to imagine among the rolling hills and rambling brooks at the end of Desert Road there is a desert. Once you take your first step through the gift shop’s front door, however, your doubts will vanish as you enter the vast and sandy Desert of Maine. The owners welcome you to a very unusual experience and they will do everything they can to make your visit a pleasant and informative one. In 1797 the Tuttle family moved to the 300 acre farm that once covered the Desert of Maine where they successfully raised crops of potatoes and hay for several years. Failure to rotate crops thereafter, combined with massive land—clearing and overgrazing resulted in severe soil erosion that exposed this hidden desert. As the spreading sand grew uncontrollable, the Tuttles surrendered, leaving the desert to it’s destiny.

LINCOLN OUTDOOR CENTERIn a kayak, you are sitting with your head only a few feet above the water. Your entire view of the water changes. If one of Maine’s countless harbor seals swims nearby, you can look it straight in the eye. You can paddle into the nooks and crannies and literally land on islands that are inaccessible to boats with deeper hulls.

If you are planning on spending a night out, there are few places better than on one of our coastal islands. Imagine paddling a few miles or more, landing on an island and “claiming” a camping spot for yourself. You’ll eat dinner with the sunset and wake up to the first sunrises in the U.S., staring out towards open ocean.

Lincoln Outdoor Center can tailor an experience for you that

The park-like setting, wildlife exhibits, and flower gardens make this an inviting stop. Bring a picnic and spend the day! The park is open daily, 9:30am–4:30pm from mid-April to November 11. Admission fees are charged. Visit us on the web at www.mainewildlifepark.com; www.mefishwildlife.com; or www.gemsof26.com. You may call 207-657-4977 FMI.

Special Photographer Admission Passes Now Available Summer: Pass holders are personally escorted by a Park staff member for special access to wildlife enclosures, to take up-close pictures that are unimpeded by fences and obstacles. MAINE MINERALOGY EXPEDITIONS, (MME)www.rocksme.biz We are the premier attraction in the greater Bethel area for rockhounds of all experience levels. Our main attraction is a four-hour guided tour of the famous Bumpus Mine where some of the world’s largest beryl crystals were found at the Bumpus in the late 1920’s. They were over twenty feet long and weighed many tons. Visitors (5 yrs and older) are treated to a basic introduction to local geology and mineralogy and a guided tour of two of the only mine tunnels in the area still permitting public access. Finally, visitors have an opportunity to dig in the mine tailings in search of mineral specimens including, feldspar, rose quartz, milky and smoky quartz, black tourmaline and beryl. It’s a great outdoor experience for history buffs, nature lovers, students and scouting groups who often take the tour to qualify for various academic and merit badge requirements.

Visitors gather at BETHEL OUTDOOR ADVENTURES, (BOA) before noon departure for the Bumpus Mine in their own vehicles. Safety requirements must be obeyed at all times and visitors must be equipped with sturdy shoes, repellent, and their own comfort items. MME provides hard hats, lights, collection buckets, and hand tools. While the site is considered “easy access”, tunnels are not wheel chair accessible. The mine is remote, with the only “improvements” being the access road and a maintained Porta-Jon, pretty much the same as it was when mining operations ceased in the 1960’s. Take a look at our web site, (www.rocksme.biz) for pictures and comments from our guest experiences! Along with MME, two closely affiliated businesses provide a great menu of experiences that will make your visit to our area a truly memorable one. First, to compliment the experience with gems and native minerals is

Disc golf became a formalized sport in the 1970s. One of the first ten official disc golf courses in the world was built in Maine in 1975. As with the sport in general, Maine began to see exponential growth in disc golf in the late 1990s with the opening of first disc golf only facility in the state, Enman Field in Brunswick, in 1996. In the nearly fifteen years since, over twenty-five courses have opened across the state. Dragon Disc Golf has had a significant hand in that growth. In addition to Enman Field, Dragon Disc Golf opened Dragan Field in Auburn in 2000 and Pleasant Hill in Scarborough in 2007. Amongst the three facilities, one can find all the great variety of course design to be found in disc golf. From the winding wooded trails at Enman Field to the open field grass fairways at Pleasant Hill to the variety of elevation at Dragan Field, players of all age, skill and ability can have fun and be challenged at the same time.

Some of the top players from across the country come to play Dragon Disc Golf’s courses in the annual Dragon Disc Golf Championships held in early June. Sanctioned by the Professional Disc Golf Association, the DDGC has

historically been one of the biggest and most popular tournaments in Maine and New England for many years. Other courses in Maine that have earned some renown amongst disc golf enthusiasts in Maine and New England include Bennett Farm in Gorham, CR Farm in Gardiner, Quaker Hill and Skyriders in Fairfield, Ackers’ Acres in Bowdoinham and Burnsboro Disc Golf in Vassalboro. Each disc golf course

in Maine offers a great combination of unique playing experience, picturesque Maine landscapes, and fun exercise for very affordable prices. Disc golf is one of the fastest growing sports in the world, and Maine is at the cutting edge of the sport.

The midcoast region extends from Brunswick to Searsport on the north and includes eastern Cumberland, all of Sagadahoc, Lincoln and Knox counties as well as a major section of Waldo County. The rich seafaring heritage of the entire region is very much alive and well and seen in its many bustling harbors and traditional fishing villages. History and cultural activities abound here. Historic forts at Popham, Edgecomb, William Henry and the Colonial Pemaquid Restoration as well as the Pownal and Knox forts and the Civil War Museum that honors Maine Civil War hero Joshua Chamberlain in Brunswick are a must see for history buffs. For those with an interest in maritime traditions, the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath, the Penobscot Marine Museum in Searsport and the Fishing Museum at Pemaquid Point Light provide wonderful opportunities to discover our seafaring past. Cultural activities in the form of concerts, performing arts and fine art galleries and studios are found throughout the region. You will also have a wide variety of fine restaurants to choose from as well as accommodations that range from large resorts, cozy inns, B&Bs and great campgrounds. Boat cruises and deep sea fishing opportunities abound. If you enjoy antiquing, checking out flea markets and boutiques, the mid-coast has it for you. The midcoast region is truly the jewel of Maine’s Coast with something for everyone to enjoy.

MY CREEDby Margaret Chase Smith

“My creed is that public service must be more than doing a job efficiently and honestly. It must be a complete dedication to the people and to the nation with full recognition that every human being is entitled to courtesy and consideration, that constructive criticism is not only to be expected, but sought; that smears are not only to be expected, but fought; that honor is to be earned, but not bought.”

Welcome to the Brunswick Area: Bowdoin College, Maine State Music Theatre, Joshua Chamberlain Museum and much more ... The midcoast region extends from Brunswick to Searsport on the north. On Route 1 you enter Brunswick—an industrial and cultural center that initiates the vacationer into a comfortable mix of past and present that makes Maine’s midcoast region so special. The rich seafaring heritage of the entire area is still very much alive and seen in its many bustling harbors. Shipbuilders, fishermen and pleasure boaters alike share in the unceasing ebb and flow of the area. Perched between the confluence of two giant rivers on one side and the shores of Casco Bay on the other, Brunswick, founded in 1794, has been a community of cultural vigor and diversity for more than 200 years. Its broad Main Street, tree-shaded Village Green and Malls as well as classic New England architecture, combine to create a splendid New England ambience. Brunswick, located a little more than 20 miles north of Portland, offers unlimited opportunities to enjoy cultural events, museums and many 1st class restaurants, presenting a variety of delectable cuisines ... a culinary treat for every palate awaits you!

The offerings of this community are ... a summer music theatre, a year-round dramatic theatre, one of the finest small art museums in the northeast, two excellent libraries and regular summer concerts by a premier string quartet. Brunswick, while enjoying the charm of a college town, has the scale, pace and location to offer visitors everything they expect from a Maine coastal community ... and is truly the gateway to midcoast Maine!

Every spring, the residents of Brunswick eagerly await the opening of Fat Boy Drive-In and every fall they mourn when it closes. Every summer since 1955 Fat Boy has been haunting the grounds for Maine fishermen, Naval aviators, Bowdoin College students and thousands of coastal vacationers. Fat Boy is world famous (it really is!) for its Canadian BLT’s, Maine Lobster Rolls, and 20oz. Thick Western Frappes. Then, of course, there are our Whoper Burgers. Don’t be herded around like cattle in a fast food restaurant, sit back and enjoy a quality meal in the comfort of your very own car. When you need service, simply turn on your headlights and one of our friendly waitresses will be happy to serve you.

Farther north along Coastal Route One is the historic shipbuilding city of Bath, fondly known as the “City of Ships”. From its heyday as a shipbuilding center during the age of sail to the modern day Navy vessels built with pride at the Bath Iron Works, Bath has earned this title. The soul of Bath is in its shipbuilding heritage, past and present, and the city thrives on the balance of industry with arts and cultural life, clearly visible in the distinctive red and white crane of the Bath Iron Works overlooking the restored Victorian buildings of the downtown district. This balance is one of the reasons downtown’s Front Street was recognized as one of the nation’s top ten downtown stretches, earning a prestigious designation from the American Planning Association as one of

2009 “Great Streets”. Strolling under the trailing flower baskets and shade trees on Bath’s Front and Centre Streets, you’ll see signs everywhere of the bustling mid- to late-19th century shipping port Bath once was ... from the stately Customs House to the “archway” that now connects Front Street to municipal parking, where sailors once rolled barrels from the warehouses to the docks. The wide brick sidewalks and pedestrian friendly one-way streets are a great place for exploring the downtown’s lively mix of shops, galleries and restaurants. With the local pharmacy, grocery, and pubs lined up shoulder to shoulder with upscale bistros, boutiques, antique stores and vintage clothing shops, Bath provides a shopping and dining experience that is a little bit funky, a little bit classic and very cool. The National Trust cited Bath as “an old seafaring town that has reinvented itself as one of the best small cities in America”. Lodging in one of Bath’s gracious inns is the perfect base for those seeking to experience life along the Kennebec at the pace of yesteryear. Bath’s tree-lined streets form an outdoor gallery of humble and grand examples of classic American architecture. The City of Bath website and Sagadahoc Preservation Inc. offer

audio or printed tours of these historic homes. Bath is also home to the popular Chocolate Church Arts Center where nationally and internationally recognized musicians play throughout the year on the main-stage, and the gallery exhibits some of mid-coast Maine’s finest artists. The Maine Maritime Museum on the grounds of the historic Percy and Small Shipyard also has fine examples of maritime art, along with regularly changing exhibits on ships and shipbuilding, and interactive installations for children. The Maine Maritime Museum also offers boat tours of the Kennebec River lighthouses and trolley tours of the Bath Iron Works shipyard. Just a few miles downriver from Bath are Reid State Park and Popham Beach, two of the most beautiful beaches in Maine with glorious stretches of sand and rugged rocky outcroppings. Just past Popham Beach, explore historic Fort Popham guarding the mouth of the Kennebec River. In addition there is sailing, kayaking, golfing, and fishing ... or just unwinding on the veranda after a long day of sampling Bath’s many pleasures! Events to look for include Sagadahoc Preservation’s annual Homes and Hidden Gardens Tour, golf tournaments at the Bath Country Club, the four-day Bath Heritage Days Festival including the 4th of July Parade, and Columbus Day weekend’s Autumnfest.Maine’s Sea Story Lives Here

Nothing compares to the unique and exciting experience of seeing the coast of Maine from the air. At Wiscasset airport you can do just that. Situated in the heart of the beautiful Midcoast area, you can take off from the airport and immediately be up and over the scenic coastline, soaring over Popham beach and picturesque Sequin Island Lighthouse. The views are breathtaking. Pilot and tour guide David Stapp loves what he does as he narrates the tours with interesting tidbits of Maine coast trivia. Ocean Point Aviation offers 4 unique tours. The Midcoast Tour includes Five Islands area and Boothbay. The Pemaquid Light Tour flies over that famous lighthouse and surrounding area. For the lighthouse enthusiast, The Maine Lighthouse tour takes in an amazing ten lighthouses. You can even tailor your own flight to see sites of specific interest to you personally such as family camps, homes, islands or something you’ve always wanted to see from the air. It’s

an experience you will never forget. Ocean Point Aviation also hosts aerial photography tours, birthday parties, special events, and fly-ins. OPA will host their 3rd annual Midcoast Air and Land Fly-in and Family Festival on Saturday, October 3rd including a pancake breakfast, free plane rides for kids, and lots of trucks, emergency

vehicles and planes to see and climb on. Ocean Point Aviation began three years ago when, after twenty years of flying experience, the owner David Stapp bought a new Cessna 172. David started Ocean Point Aviation with one simple goal: making a dream of flight into a reality for other people just like himself. With that in mind, he and his wife, Kerrith, have developed a full service aviation business providing flight instruction, scenic tours, charter services, and airport services for pilots and their planes. They offer gift certificates for all special occasions, including birthdays, anniversaries, and weddings. For more information on any of our services, or to book your special scenic tour call 207-380-1884 and the Stapps will be glad to help you have the best Maine experience you can have.

The concentration of artistic talent in Georgetown is impressive and 2010 is an ON year for the now

bi-annual Celebration of the Arts, a heady blend to delight all your senses. Visual arts are represented in many forms including painting, photography, sculpture, and printmaking. This perfect Maine coast venue is to be savored with live local musicians inviting you to hum along. Enjoy the warm feel of finely crafted items such as wooden bowls, intricate baskets, handcrafted fiber arts, and beaded jewelry. Catch a whiff of scented soaps and wreaths made with local vegetation. And help yourself to a free homemade brownie or cookie with a cup of punch. Sigh.

Charles Goodhue was a well-known local artist in many mediums. He is especially remembered for his development of the vitreous flux technique—come find out just what that means on July 25. Examples of his work will be featured in a special display to celebrate his contribution to the body of many works inspired by Georgetown for world-renowned artists such as Marguerite and William Zorach, Marsden Hartley, Dahlov Ipcar, Clarence White, F. Holland Day, and Gaston Lachaise. The Youth Pavilion will provide an opportunity for young artists to create and display their work. Each is invited to bring an item previously done to share and/or to create a new one right on the spot with materials provided. This will be a delightful experience for everyone in the family. Recipe for a Perfect Maine Summer Day: Combine a trip to the Celebration of the Arts with a visit to the beaches at Reid State Park. PLUS: Your choice of local dining options including great take-out for the beach from the Georgetown Country Store, or picnic tables at the Five Islands Wharf lobster shack for lunch or dinner (menu extends beyond lobster), or compose-it-yourself from the gourmet delights and fresh local produce at the Five Islands Farm—not to mention indoor dining at the Osprey Restaurant or the famous Robinhood

Free Meetinghouse—all easily found by way of Route 127 South (just after the Route 1 Carlton Bridge over the Kennebec River at Bath). Truly memorable.

Note: Light/moderate rain will not cancel this event but heavy rain will. For more information contact the sponsoring organization, The Georgetown Historical Society, at 371-9200 or log onto www.georgetownhistoricalsociety.org.

Coastal Maine Botanical GardenNow’s the Time to Visit!

by Barbara Freeman

Have you heard? Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens in Boothbay is one of Maine’s finest and most-popular attractions, and with good reason. But there’s more: On July 8 the Gardens will open a new children’s garden that will delight visitors of all ages.

Dragons and spouting whales of stone, a life-size bronze bear cub, lobster-pot buoys to haul, a boat in a

tree, lakes and islands, a labyrinth, a farmstead with a Book Barn for storytelling and reading, animals, a greenhouse, a tree house, and a Wawanaki village. These and other features of the two-acre Bibby and Harold Alfond Children’s Garden are inspired by beloved children’s books by Maine authors.

The children’s garden is the newest, but by no means the only, reason to visit. On the Gardens’ 250 shorefront acres, visitors find a dozen spectacular ornamental gardens, incomparable stonework and sculpture, waterfalls, and miles of waterfront and woodland trails.

At the Gardens, there’s something for all ages, in all seasons. To learn more, visit www.MaineGardens.org, or call (207) 633-4333.

damariscottaThere’s a warm welcome waiting for you ... A truly quaint and beautiful Maine village, Damariscotta is the gateway to the Pemaquid/Bristol peninsula. The area is rich in history; the town’s first recorded deed is dated 1625. In the spring, alewives gather to spawn at the Damariscotta waterfalls. Damariscotta serves as the shopping and financial center for surrounding communities, and is the site of many fine homes. It’s attractive Main Street boasts numerous stores, shops and restaurants. The Chapman-Hall House, built in 1754, features an herb garden and rose bushes dating back to the 18th century. Along the edge of the Damariscotta River are some three acres of oyster shells, left in great mounds by Indians during the countless ancient summers. Artifacts have been found among the shells to substantiate the theory that this was a popular spot for many different Maine Indian tribes through the centuries. Some of the shell heaps run as deep as 30 feet. Wildlife abounds along the shore of the Damariscotta River and overhead, majestic pines and oaks border the high and rocky bluffs. Salt marshes change their colors with tide and season. The landscape has changed over the years, but there are many places to experience the quiet, natural beauty of this great river. Archeological finds and ancient shell heaps (middens) testify that Native Americans camped, fished and hunted here at least 5,000 years ago. From the sparkling ocean bays, to the pristine lakes and tidal

rivers; the natural landscape in the Damariscotta Region offers unrivaled opportunities for all.

Although more and more people travel to Maine throughout the years, Waldoboro continues to maintain a quiet and unhurried ambience even when coastal Route 1 is bumper to bumper traffic. Here in Waldoboro, in the Medomak River Valley, agriculture and the sea meet as the Medomak opens into Broad Bay and then the many-islanded and beautiful Muscongas Bay. To the mind’s eye, a good place to visit ... and live. Bremen, Maine, population 690, is located in the midcoast region, between Waldoboro and Damariscotta, on the eastern shore of the Pemaquid peninsula. The principal commercial activities of the town have traditionally been marine-related: fishing, clamming and boatbuilding. But the scenic beauty increasingly appeals to artists, craftspeople and others who seek a quiet, unspoiled place of great natural beauty in which to live and work. Broad Cove Marina Services, a fully-operational marina, is located approximately 7 miles from Round Pond, Waldoboro and Damariscotta. Come visit with us and take in the scenic view from our enlarged deck as you enjoy fresh seafood cooked especially for you.

Matthews Museum of Maine Heritage is located on the Union Fairgrounds in Union, Maine. Considered by many “Maine’s best kept secret” the museum houses over 8000 artifacts from the earliest colonial times to the twentieth century. Highlights of a visit to the museum include a complete one-room school house, the one of a kind 32 foot tall Moxie Bottles Stand built in

1905, a complete cooper (barrel making) shop and the recently restored, Collins Wingate, one-horse shay. Also on display is the country’s largest exhibit of Moxie collectibles honoring Union native and Civil War veteran, the inventor of Moxie, Dr. Augustin Thompson.

Belfast features great shopping, entertainment, restaurants, accommodations and easy access from land or sea. Come explore this historic mid-coast town nestled on beautiful Penobscot Bay and the Passagassawakeag River. A truly lovely city with striking coastal views. The city is surrounded by fine motels, restaurants, shops, parks and galleries. Belfast has become a popular destination for boaters of all kinds. Sit by the harbor, relax and enjoy! Moorings in the magnificent harbor now number more than 200, with room for many more. The parks and shoreline make inviting places for picnics. Catch a movie or visit the music theatre, art fairs, hobby shows and special holiday events. Antique shops and art galleries are filled with one-of-a-kind items and interesting collectibles. In the Belfast area there is no shortage of fine restaurants. Their offerings present a variety of foods prepared with “down home” as well as “sophisticated” culinary skills to satisfy your taste buds ... Bon Appetite! Visit the many local and State parks in the Belfast area. Swim in the ocean at Bayside or in the warmer waters of Swan Lake or Lake St. George. Try the pool at the Belfast City Park. Tee-off at one of the area’s nine-hole golf courses. Or go horseback riding. Play tennis, even after dark on lighted courts at the

Belfast City Park. Relax and enjoy all the sights at the Belfast Harborside. While in the Belfast area, be sure and visit our Historic Downtown Shopping section. You will find merchants willing and ready to courteously serve you and make your shopping experience a pleasant one! Everywhere you go, you’ll find intriguing echoes of the past. A century ago, visitors came to Belfast by overnight steamer from Boston. Today, on the waterfront, the old railroad terminal is home to the Belfast Maskers, who present entertaining plays throughout the year. The terminal is just down the hill from hundred-year-old brick storefronts that house quaint boutiques, friendly taverns and exceptional restaurants.

Discover Searsport—Maine’s Best Kept Secret ...

Searsport and Stockton Springs are located where the mouth of the Penobscot River flows into the beautiful Penobscot Bay. Centrally located between Camden and Bar Harbor, it is within easy reach of both Bangor and Augusta. It is here that Route 1 traverses the bay, affording the visitor breathtaking views of the Maine coastline. More than 20 years of Great Downeast Family Dining Ruth & Wimpy’s has become a family dining icon in downeast Maine. Their restaurant’s reputation for serving great food makes it the number one dining choice for locals and brings summer visitors to the area year after year to enjoy a great meal. Thanks for making a downeast dining experience so special.

acadia & downeast This region includes the spectacular Acadia National Park, one of the most visited national parks in America. Washington County where the sun first rises on continental United States and Campobello Island, N.B. located across the International Bridge from Lubec, Maine made famous for being the summer home of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and St. Stephen, N.B. across the Ste. Croix River from its sister U.S. city Calais, Maine. Acadia National Park includes more than 40,000 acres, mostly on Mount Desert Island. The remainder of the park is located at Schoodic Point near Winter Harbor on the mainland and several islands, including the Isle au Haut. The park offers great trails for hiking, biking and horseback riding. Fishing and kayaking are a few other activities one can enjoy in this natural wonderland. For many, Washington County is thought of as Continental America’s last frontier. Here you can escape by yourself and hike a salt- sprayed beach at West Quoddy Head State Park or forest trail in Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge or at hundreds of other pristine areas throughout the Sunrise County and never meet another soul. Making summer treats and holiday traditions special For more than a half a century the Hanscom’s have been harvesting wild blueberries from their barrens. In mid-August, both locals and visitors alike flock to the Hanscom Ridge Road, Marshfield, facility to treat themselves to a great downeast summer tradition. In addition to their summer blueberry treats, they pioneered the development of balsam fir holiday products in downeast Maine. Christmas trees, wreaths, garlands, centerpieces and other specialty holiday creations are among the natural Maine products that the Hanscoms have shipped to brighten the holiday seasons of thousands of families across America. Early November sees the beginning of the process of harvesting the finest tip ends of the balsam fir branches. The freezing nights in downeast Maine at this time of year are the perfect ingredient to slow down sap flow, allowing the needles to form a strong bond with the branches. Next comes the creative process. In the midst of the glorious fragrance of the newly cut balsam fir, creative artists at Flo’s Wreaths put their talents into the development of each holiday product. Their special storage methods assure that the fresh smell of the Maine woods lasts for months. During November and early December, they ship their creative holiday products daily to thousands of retail customers across the country.

The Wharf The last full-time, working sardine factory that had been housed in an historic 100-year-old building with a large wharf on Johnson Bay in Lubec, Maine was not on the Trafford’s list of purchases. They had recently sold their Florida business and wanted a new life adventure as they planned for their early retirement and after a carefree trip to downeast Maine, decided that Lubec was the spot they would retire and make their new life. They saw great potential in the vacant sardine factory and after much thought and counsel purchased the facility. Their goal was to return the facility with its wharf to a working waterfront business. Summer 2009 launched the fruition of this goal. An oceanfront lifestyle and lodging at The Wharf ’s beautifully furnished apartments and suites are now available. The suites share a larger unit with kitchen, dining areas, sitting areas and laundry. Each suit has a private bath and cozy living rooms with wonderful ocean views. The apartments have two bedrooms and baths as well as a living room, dining room and den with a balcony overlooking the ocean.

Eastport’s Old Stone Mustard Mill Museum Raye’s Mustard Mill is a working museum located on Washington Street in Eastport (America’s eastern-most city), approximately eight miles down Route 190 from its intersection with Route 1 in Perry. The quaint and authentic mill is North America’s only working traditional stone ground mustard mill. At the turn of the 20th century, J. Wesley Raye started the mill to produce mustard for Maine’s burgeoning sardine industry. In the early 1900s, the small city of Eastport had more than 20 sardine canneries. Later in the century, when the sardine industry declined, Raye’s Mustard Mill became known for its award-winning gourmet and specialty mustards. This downeast institution has remained in the Raye family for over a century. The past is alive and well in Eastport In 1818, when America was a young nation, led by its 5th President, James Monroe, Samuel B. Wadsworth, a Portland native and the son of Revolutionary War General Peleg Wadsworth saw an opportunity to launch a ship chandler business in the busy port city of Eastport. At the time both the whaling and shipbuilding industries were booming. His entrepreneurship was exactly perfect for the time and he knew that he could meet all his customers needs by supplying hardware, harpoons, deadeyes, canvas, alcohol, and tobacco and everything else required for rigging, operating and provisioning a ship. While the original business site suffered through several fires and storms the Groundhog Day Gale of 1976 completely devastated the facility. True to its family heritage, the fifth generation of the Wadsworth family gathered up what remained of the business after the storm and moved to its present location at 42 Water Street in the center of Eastport’s downtown Historic Center.

Summer 2010 Marks the 46th Anniversary of the Roosevelt International Park On January 22, 1964, the Roosevelt International Park was established by agreement signed by Canadian Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson and U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson. On August 20, 1964, the First Ladies of the two countries opened the only international park in the world as a unique memorial to the close relationship between the people of the two nations. Both governments wished to honor the role that Franklin Delano Roosevelt had played in their mutual histories, as well as the special relationship that FDR had with his beloved island. While the summer home of the late president remains the centerpiece of the park, beautiful gardens and 2,800 acres of natural beauty complete with scenic vistas, hiking and driving trails provide additional visitor experiences. Back by popular demand are complimentary outside walking tours of the estate and on-site presentations of seashore and bog ecology (staff and weather permitting). The Roosevelt cottage opens on the Saturday following Victoria Day (Sat. prior to Memorial Day) through Canadian Thanksgiving (U.S. Columbus Day) 10:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m. ADT. The park’s visitor center will remain open through October 31 to accommodate fall visitors. The visitors center offers interpretive displays, a short introductory video and a selection of memorabilia items.

Come Celebrate and Enjoy the Spectacular Katahdin Region In the spiritual traditions of the Penobscot Indian people, Mt. Katahdin is so sacred that it would be sacrilegious for one of them to climb to the top of the mountain. They believe that the highest god in their spiritual system, Glukab sent the lower angry god, Pamola to Pamola Peak for eternity because of his bad behavior. This legendary region captures the minds and hearts of visitors each year. Once you visit, you’ll want to return. The Katahin Region consists of the towns of Medway, East Millinocket, Millinocket, Patten and Sherman. In addition to excellent accommodations, fine dining and entertainment there is the Ambejejus Boom House on Ambejejus Lake which displays an excellent selection of driving memorabilia and the Millinocket Historical Society Museum which displays many aspects of the area’s unique history. Recreational opportunities abound from hiking in Baxter State Park to white water rafting on the Penobscot River or fly fishing on one of the region’s many remote ponds and streams. A camera is an essential item to preserve your adventure.

The Pelletier Loggers Family Restaurant Bar & Grill is a Must-Stop In March, the Pelletier family of Millinocket made famous in their role in the much loved Discovery Channel’s TV series American Loggers opened a great fun new restaurant in downtown Millinocket. The family spent nearly a million dollars to create the special environment they wanted to share. Family memorabilia such as a truck grille, license plates, deer and moose trophies shot by several of the brothers adorn the walls. The wait staff wear Pelletier logging uniforms. When in the Katahdin area the Pelletiers’ new restaurant is a must stop for fun and great dining.

A Maine Sporting Camp Tradition for More Than 90 Years For just short of a century, Maynard’s In Maine has provided their guests with outstanding wilderness experiences in addition to excellent bungalow style cabin accommodations and great dining with wholesome fresh farm foods prepared to perfection. The Moosehead area offers outstanding landlocked salmon, trout and togue fishing. This past year, Billy Maynard landed a 29.67lb. togue on Moosehead Lake measuring 41” long. His huge catch beats the old Moosehead Lake record set in 1961 of a 28lb., 12 oz. togue. The area’s large, pristine forests provide excellent cover for deer, bear and small game and make it an outstanding hunting region. Here guests at Maynard’s will find a real pearl in the North Woods.
