Born a nd bred in Sc and inavia , the a ll new Saab 9-5 Sed a n is a sleek exp ression of

the p ow er of simplic ity and heralds the a rrival o f a new , more a ssertive designlangua ge for the brand.

Forward -loo king design tha t d oe sn’ t igno re w here it’s c om ing from – tha t sums up thevisual ap pe al of the c a r. “We a re a do pting a new vo c ab ula ry to tell the story of ourb rand ,” explains Saab Brand Design Chief Simo n Pad ian. ” It g ives a fresh, verymo dern exp ression to som e of o ur c la ssic d esign c ues.”

The ‘ words’ in the ne w voc ab ulary co me from Saa b ’s aw ard-winning Aero X co nc ep tc a r, revea led in 2006 as a signp ost to the future of Sa ab design. Its bold fron t-endstyling, ‘ wrap around’ window grap hic , clean b od y surfac ing and ic e-bloc k lightingthem es are key visual eleme nts now transla ted into the pow erful form of t he a ll new 9-5 Sed an. They reflec t a b ra nd inspired by Sc and inav ian design a nd a unique a irc ra ftheritage.

“ We pushed out the bo unda ries of Saa b de sign w ith the Ae ro X co nc ep t,” saysSimon, “and the a ll new 9-5 show s how we a re b ringing th is mo re a ssertive loo k to ourp roduc ts. It is the first step in a new era for Saab design.”

Organic sc ulptureThe fa c e o f the new 9-5 is defined b y a d eep g rille flanked by curving, ‘ic e-bloc k’hea dlamp units with signa ture LED light guides. The wind shield a nd side wind ow s are

presented as a single wraparound graphic, the disguised front and side pillars givingthe g lasshouse of the c ab in Sa ab ’ s signa ture c oc kpit loo k. The p rop ortions of thewindshield a nd roof a re a lso reminisc ent o f the ‘ pea ked c ap ’ loo k of the c la ssic 900mo del. And tha t la rge Saab log o, embossed in the c ente r of the g rille, cha rac terizesthe mo re a ssertive, self-c onfident design la ngua ge.

The ‘ organic sc ulpture’ o f the low-slung b od y blends c lea n c onvex and c onc avesurfac es with na tura l, curvac eous forms. Seeming shap ed b y the w ind , the b od yworkha s a smo oth, fuselag e-like qua lity insp ired by Sa ab ’ s a irc ra ft heritag e. Fendersstretc hed to the out er ed ges of the whee ls, 17 to 19-inches in size, energize t he loo ksof the c a r and a dd to its d ynamic, purposeful sta nce .

In Sc and inavian trad ition, the v isual imp ac t of t he d esign is heightened by anabsence of exterior trim or stylized detailing. All individual elements contribute to theap pe a ra nc e o f the d esign as who le, without p roviding visual distra c tion or ‘ c lutte r’ .

“ With Sc a nd inavian d esign, we a re see king to simp lify fo rms,” says Simon. “ Thingsdon’ t ha ve to be c om plic a ted to be interesting. In visual te rms, less is mo re.”

Suc h ‘ pa ssive’ d esign d eta il c an b e see n in the doo r mirrors. “ The mirror ca sings a reb lac k, ra ther than b od y co lored , bec ause the m irror unit oc c upies the sa me v isualspac e a s the w indow s,” e xp lains Simo n. “We d idn’ t wa nt a ny interrup tion to thewrap around window grap hic which ma kes suc h a b old sta teme nt.”

Saab b rand design c ues c an be see n in the ‘ hoc key stic k’ b elt-line, unde rlined by asimple ma tt a luminum trim, lead ing into the strong rea r C-p illa rs.

The c a r’ s dynam ic c harac ter is unde rlined by a fa lling roo f-line a nd those strong ,swe ep ing rea r pillars whic h b uttress a slightly rec essed rea r sc ree n. The flow of the roo fand p illars c ulminate s in a smo oth, flat rea r dec k. A full-wid th ice -bloc k rea r light b a r,ec hoing the front light t heme , ad ds to the all new9-5’s Sc andinavian c ha rac ter.

Saab ’ s d esign he rita ge is evide nt from tha t rea r sc reen, a c ounte rpo int towrap around w indshield at the front. “ We have inverted the shap e of the rea r sc reenof the c la ssic 900 sed an,” explains Simon. “ In fac t, we’ ve p rob ably been even b olde rwith the d esign at the b ac k than the front. We have n’t had a c onsistent Sa ab id entityin this area befo re. You c an expec t to see t he light b a r, and the w ay the rea r light s

wrap into it, a s a signa ture fea ture in future p rod uc ts.”

View ed from any ang le, the a ll new 9-5 has a d istinc tive charac ter. “ We de liberate lywa nted to a void the c lic hé of the c oup é look for sed ans. We’ve stretc hed thetrad itiona l three-b ox sed an proportions but kep t a defined trunk line – this is a sportssed an w hic h ma kes a p ow erful visua l sta tem ent. It doesn’ t nee d t o look like a c oup éor a hatc hbac k.”

The sleek shap e a lso c ontribute s to exc ellent a erod ynamic p rop erties. An imp ressive0.28 Cd (co effic ient o f drag ) c ontribute s to reduc ed fuel c onsump tion a nd low windnoise. Goo d high spee d sta b ility is a lso e nsured b y nea r zero lift fo rc es a t the f ron t a xle

and the ac hieve me nt neg a tive, do wnfo rc e va lues a t the rea r, a ssisted by airflow fromthe slightly c onc ave surfac e o f the trunk lid .

Top -of-the-line Aero variants a re visua lly distinguished b y unique front a nd rea rbumper moldings,19-inc h ‘ turbine’ a lloy w hee ls, fron t fog lamps, a low ered sport c ha ssis, bi-xenonhea dlamp s and tw in exhaust tailp ipes integ rat ed into the rea r bump er fa sc ia .

The d river-foc used c oc kpit is trad itiona l Saab , while its exec ution is a ll new . A dee pc enter c onsole swe ep s up a round the d river into the ma in instrument d isp lay. It is anew expression of Saab ’ s signa ture coc kpit la yout , first introd uc ed on the Saa b 9000mo del and c ontinued w ith the c urrent 9-5. The c onsole is now inc lined a t a m uc hshallow er ang le, improving d river ergono mics in the op eration o f its func tions and inviewing t he disp la y sc ree n.

Simp licity of form is evident from a ventila tion zone , with signa ture Saa b ‘ joystick’c ont rols, which extends a c ross the top of the m a in instrument d isp lay. “ This help sc lea n up the loo k of the front fa sc ia a rea ,” exp la ins Simon. “ We have eliminate d

sep a ra te ve nts in the c ente r and o n the d river’s side, which w ould b rea k up the fluid ,integrated forms we wa nted .”

The deep ly recessed ma in d ia ls inc lude a d river-selec tab le, rolling ‘ a ltime ter’ spe edrea d -out, a referenc e to Saa b ’ s aviat ion herita ge from t he Aero X c onc ep t. Thenee dles of t he d ia ls, the m a in d isp la y sc ree n a nd the op tional HUD in the windshield,a re all illuminated in signa ture Saab g ree n. The 'Night Pa nel' but ton, ano the r uniqueSaab fea ture, allow s the d river to minimize d istrac tion d uring n ight d riving b y switc hingoff a ll the ma in instrume nt illumination, exce pt the speed om ete r.

In Saab trad ition, the c a r’ s ignition – now a sta rt/ stop button – rem ains b etw een the

front sea ts, next to the ge a r shift a nd an elec tric pa rk brake, which is fitted a ssta nd ard for a ll variants. The m a tt a luminum trim surround ing the gea r shift andstart/ stop butto n has an ‘ organic’ shap e w ith a varying w idt h a nd thickness to m atc hthe c urva ture o f the surfac e. “ This is in harmony with ‘free fo rm’ tha t we ’ve a pp lied tothe exterior,” says Simo n. “ It’ s a deta il that looks very natural, ad d ing to the c ra fted ,qua lity ap pea l of the c ab in.”

Another sub tle deta il are the sma ll cha nnels in the c ente r sta c k fasc ia tha t link thema in infota inme nt a nd c limate c ontrols. They resem ble the shap e o f Leo nardo daVinci’s Vitruvian Man , a hint a t the c omb ination of huma n d esign and sc ientificp rec ision d ep loyed in the layout o f the c a bin. It’ s pa rt of the log ic al, zona l group ings

used for the loc a tion of the c a r’s interior, c hassis a nd lighting c ont rols.

The remova l of a mec hanica l handb rake linkag e frees up spa c e fo r a large, tw oc omp artment c enter c onsole, with twin c up-holde rs and the po tential to co nnec tseve ral p ortab le device s throug h USB a nd AUX c onnec tions a longside a 12V pow eroutlet. A useful pull-out storag e draw er next to t he d river’s doo r is big eno ugh to ta kea number of p ersona l items, suc h a s a wa llet , PDA a nd g lasses.

The rear of the c ab in provide s c om fortab le a c c om mod ation for three ad ults. Apa rtfrom mo re leg roo m, it now offers the o p tion of rea r sea t ente rta inme nt via fold-outsc reens in the front sea tb ac ks and sep arate rea r c lima te c ont rol. The 60/40 sp lit,

folding sea tb ac k inc ludes an arm-rest with twin cup -holders, a storag e c om partme ntand a load -through ‘ ski hatc h’.
