A HISTORY OF GOOD DESIGN Over the years SHADO has been commissioned to create various Design Projects in a wide span of Industries. From Cars, Vans, Trucks & Buses, all the way up to multi-million Dollar Flight Training Simulators. All of the designs have maintained a strong design philosophy of being Original, Practical and Beautiful, whatever their role.

Good Design is a challenge, a blend of Creative Inspiration, Practical Solutions, Strong Leadership and an eye for Cost and Detail.

It is also about listening and interpretation. So when working with a new Client, even on a type of project we have never worked on before, we listen. As we bring our experience from many other projects & disciplines, we can often help the Client look at their own product with ‘fresh eyes’. Ultimately this can create new unique solutions which allows for greater improvements for their business.

We believe that all Design is for People, their needs, their aspirations and should provide solutions which can enrich their lives.

Beauty with Brains behind It

19 people have recommended Steve

"Steve Harper is not only a talented designer, capable of interpreting the world around him and incorporating elements into his work, he is a naturally eloquent communicator. Beginning with his quirky fashionable appearance at first impression, Steve possesses an uncanny ability to capture the imagination of his audience in sharing his insights and inspiration. During a Volvo design seminar for a new product launch in Sweden, Steve was the cornerstone to introducing "Scandinavian Luxury" (for some perhaps a difficult concept to grasp). However there was no doubt in the minds of US, Canadian and Mexican media reps in attendance after Steve expertly drew references from the regions' culture, lifestyle, and environment to make a connection with the concept. Several seasoned-journalists remarked it was the most colorful, exhilarating, and astute presentation they had ever seen. That seminar set the tone for the roll-out of that product, as well as for the communication of subsequent models. Steve is not only distinctive in his artistry for manipulating physical space, but he's equally adept at mastering the cerebral realm for its understanding. Stephen R. Bohannon, Volvo Cars of North America, Public Affairs“

I have known and worked with Steve Harper for 20 years since 1986 when Steve worked for MGA as a Senior Designer with Peter Horbury and Ron Saunders. As Director Product Development for Leyland DAF Vans at that time I engaged Steve and the team at MGA to develop facelift designs for the existing range of vans and design proposals for the new van range (which became the Renault Master).Whilst Steve was at MGA we worked together on a number of other projects for both Leyland DAF and independently in overseas market notably China and Indonesia. In forming my own independent company CAD Ltd in 1994 Steve joined as an independent consultant and was responsible for all of the companies appearance design work. This included major projects in UK, Thailand, Indonesia, China, USA and Europe.Steve possesses a number of key qualities which in my opinion are critical to the success of a design projectA keen technical knowledge coming from his early training/education. This understanding enables him to be a good team player. He has a good vision of the market and the creative spark to capture its need in a clear and understandable formatHe is tenacious and hard-working. He doesn’t give up at the first difficulty nor does he shirk the hard-work Involved in researching the customer or market requirements. He uses both of these qualities in promoting his ideas and concepts. An able technician on paper or in clay.I enjoyed working with Steve and recommend the experience to others.William T Lowe, CEng, MSc, MIMechE, FSAE(UK)

Over many years of working with Steve, he has proved himself to be one of the most knowledgeable and consistently productive designers I have had the pleasure of working with. Steve instinctively knows how to get the best out of a project. From design and form language through to the financials of a project, Steve is quite simply exceptional. If ever I needed a second opinion or just helpful advice on a concept or production design, I would always make a point of asking Steve's opinion. His depth of knowledge and love of all things creative, Steve would give an extra insight which could take ideas in another creative direction. I strongly recommend Steve Harper as a designer, design manager or even a people person, you will not find better.Jonathan Disley, Program Chief Designer, Volvo Car Corporationworked with Steve at Volvo Cars Design Studio, Gothenburg, Sweden

I first met Steve Harper in the late 1980' s when he was the lead stylist on a unique project to address the functional. aesthetic and ergonomic design of the large scale commercial flight simulator. These are multi million pound devices used throughout the airline industry to train flight crew and it is a testament to Steve's talent that the design criteria he established almost 20 years ago remains the industry standard to day.Since That time Steve has worked on numerous designs for simulator based projects for both entertainment and educational attractions. His design for the Morphis range of entertainment capsule simulators took the market by storm in the late 1990's and Morphis simulators are currently installed world wide from the Singapore Science Centre to the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. He also designed the definitive 'flying saucer' simulator for a ground breaking project, Mars 2112 in New York.Steve's greatest asset however is his broad spread of talent. His concept illustrations bring engineering design to life and in product design he thinks not only in terms of shape and form but also in terms of cost, Materials, ergonomics and production. That's a rare and valuable combination in our business and I'm sure many others.Paul Spence, Marketing Director Metropolis Entertainment.

I have worked with Steve Harper in two major 'Face Lift' programs at VCC. The P1007 (MY 08 Face lift of S40 & V50) and P1009.In both these programs Steve has showed an ability to combine two important skills. The first is the role as a designer knowing how to make the best possible visual impact. The second is the in-depth knowledge about rules for engineering. Steve has managed to create the best possible styling within all given frames such as cost, Volvo demands, timing etc.Steve has had the knowledge to question engineering statements when not fully investigated. But also to know when styling changes must be done. He has proposed changes both in engineering solution and in styling to reach the best compromiseI can recommend Steve for any job where excellent styling meets industrial demands.Peter Ewerstrand Director MY (Responsible Business Project Leader for both 1007 and 1009.) Volvo Cars, Gothenburg, Sweden

"Steve and I worked together in Taiwan, presenting how the Volvo brand and the Volvo brand values tied in with the Modern Scandinavian Design. Steve always mesmerizes the journalists with his combination of corporate message, personal story and local knowledge. Every time a winner! And few people are so good at cracking jokes in-between the jobs."Tatiana Butovitsch Temm, worked with Steve at Volvo Cars, Gothenburg, Sweden

"Working with Steve is a pleasure. He is well organised, both in his creative approach and his handling of practical details. He is flexible and capable of maintaining focus on deliverables to his clients through out projects. To add icing on the cake, Steve is a gifted 'salesman', a skilled communicator and best of all, a man with a sense of humour that we have grown to rely on to lighten the burden of the days."Cher Young, worked with Steve at Volvo Cars Design Studio, Gothenburg, Sweden

"Having founded the automotive industry by means of his invention of the wheel in 3564 BC, Steve is almost a legend in the Midlands of England where they subsequently made very little progression. In the last 20 years however, and despite the best efforts of HM customs and Excise, his notoriety has begun to filter out of Britain and pad softly around the world, most notably to the Scandinavian countries where his professionalism, dry wit, and ever-warm tea pot have been the mainstay of his working style, and he is often spotted sketching effortlessly in rescuing another portion of the Swedish car industry. With his trademark GTi black and red plumage he cuts a jollyfigure around most design studios, and whilst considered a little eccentric is most probably by far the sanest and most sensible of us all."Tony Hunter, at Volvo Cars Design Studio, Gothenburg, Sweden

"Steve visited South Africa twice during my career at Volvo Car South Africa to give presentations on the Volvo brand, its design philosophy and principles and, in a broader sense, Scandinavian design and luxury. His passion for the brand and clear understanding of Volvo's design philosophy made him an excellent presenter to convey the `'gospel" to journalists at a launch. He immersed himself in his subject, dedicated himself to an outstanding presentation and proved to be a worthy ambassador for the Volvo brand. His presentation skills are as good as his insight into design matters and his ability to share this in an entertaining and spellbinding manner with others. He conducted himself professionally and added value to the events which he attended. It was fun and a privilege to spend time with Steve."Deon Sonnekus, worked with Steve at Volvo Cars, South Africa

"Steve presented at a series of product introductions for a group of automotive journalists from Canada and positioned the vehicle and his work admirably. He was engaging, entertaining and very professional with the media. I wouldn't hesitate to call upon him to represent his craft or employer in the future."Chad Heard, worked with Steve at Volvo Cars Canada

"I’ve had the pleasure of working as exterior designer on a number of production projects reporting to Steve Harper. He has a very high professional dedication to achieving each projects objectives, whilst inspiring a positive working environment for his team. Steve is a good mate, mentor, whilst being a boss!"Steve Potter, reported to Steve at Volvo Cars Design Studio, Gothenburg, Sweden

"A man who is one of the rare few able to balance a vision of the future with the practicality of reality. Steve Harper is a business persons designer - able to understand the realities of commercial requirements and consumer behaviour and to translate these into the language of practical yet aesthetically appealing design. Able to manage within the necessities of commercial constraints such as budget and timelines, Steve is a great team player and a pleasure to work with."Paul Stokes, worked with Steve at Volvo Cars Thailand

"Steve manages to maintain goals despite all the obstacles. He gives clear and simple presentation of design and direction to all levels of colleague and audience, a Modellers designer quick to see the issues and listens to input."Di Pryce Evans, reported to Steve at S.H.A.D.O. Ltd

"Steve was a great support to the operations in Taiwan. He was able to engage with employees, business partners and the Press in describing the reason why Volvo Cars are designed as they are. He always provided the Taiwan operation with good press and captured the imagination of customers who met him. He was a great ambassador for Volvo outside of the Swedish Head Office."Andrew Basham, worked with Steve at Volvo Cars Taiwan

"Steve is very professional in his work. Dedicated in his assignments and in my dealings with him, (as the Design Director's assistant), I experienced him as a very reliable colleague, always going the extra mile and finding solutions to problems or helping out colleagues. He is as well very talented in doing presentations for large groups of dealers, journalists etc. His sense of humour is an extra bonus!"Maria Van Pelt Ekelund, worked directly with Steve at Volvo Cars Design Studio, Gothenburg, Sweden

"superlative journeyman designer, last of the best."Sidney Hall, worked with Steve at MGA Developments Ltd, Coventry, UK

"Apart from being an experienced designer Steve has the energy to guide the most challenging of projects. He can inspire others as a team player or can work as a focused individual. He is a valued designer to any studio or organisation."Tony Catignani, Platform Chief Designer, Volvo Cars Design Studio, Gothenburg,Sweden, worked with Steve at Volvo Cars Design Studio, Gothenburg, Sweden

"Steve is an entrepreneur type with a no non-sense approach that will get the job done in a creative and time efficient way. Oh... and you could have a good laugh too!"Simon Lamarre, Chief Designer, Volvo Cars Design Studio, Gothenburg,Sweden, worked directly with Steve at Volvo Cars Design Studio, Gothenburg, Sweden

Steve Harper and I have worked together since late 2000 in various projects (P2004, P2006, P1007, P2008, P3008 and at present P310B) at the Product Design department at Volvo Cars Cooperation in Gothenburg. In addition to his design skills I've found Steve to be a master in taking in facts and figures in detail and combining this knowledge with his tactical skills and flexible mind to find ways to create to the customers the best possible products. This goes for complete projects as well as single details. Also, I admire and enjoy whenever Steve has anything to present – it’s not only informative but also entertaining. When Steve delivers a message or presents a design, the audience is listening.I can truly recommend Steve Harper for any assignment in Product Design.Karl Axelsson, Project Manager, Product Design, Volvo Cars Design Studio, Gothenburg, Sweden
