ALANA NICHOLS TAKES GOLD IN VANCOUVERIn 2002, a young woman

named Alana Nichols joined the Adaptive Ski Program, and with the help of volunteer Kevin Horan, she first tried mono-skiing. She then went off to the University of Arizona and began playing wheelchair basketball. In 2008 she won gold in Beijing. Immediately after the 2008 Paralympics Alan turned her attention back to skiing and began training with the National Sports Center for the Diabled (NSCD) in Winter Park Colorado.

This March Alana headed to Vancouver with her mono-ski, and competed in the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games. Alana was a fierce competitor, bringing home four medals.

During a snowy day in February Alan was interviewed by John Salazar with KOAT Action 7 news. Alana was interviewed in the ASP shed at Ski Santa Fe and took some runs with her first instructor Kevin and friend Bob Pierce (ASP Board Member).

CONGRATULATIONS ALANA!

We hope to cheer Alana on at the 2014 Russia Paralymic Winter

Games!!!

THE PARALYMPIC GAMESThe Paralympic Games are a major international multi-sport event where athletes with a physical disability compete; this includes athletes with mobility challenges, amputations, blindness, and Cerebral Palsy. There are Winter and Summer Paralympics Games, which are held immediately following their respective Olympic Games. All Paralympic games are governed by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC).

The Paralympics have grown from a small collection of British World War II veterans in 1948 to the second-largest international sport event in 2008.

NEWS AND EVENTS

The Hartford Ski Spectacular takes place at Breckenridge Ski Area in Colorado in early December. With a yearly average of 750 participants, this is the wold’s largest winter sports event for people who have disabilities.

During the event the PSIA & AASI NATIONAL EDUCATION ACADEMY offers a series of half-day clinics from Monday thru Friday. You can take any combination for as many days as you want.

Clinics take place indoors and/or on the snow. Topics range from tips and tricks for instructing children with autism,

to advanced tethering for the bi-ski. Whether you want to learn more about the newest adaptive equipment available, or want tips and tricks for motivating your students, you will find a clinic here.

Online registration begins in September, and the deadline is in November. Specific details have not yet been released.

If you would like to attend Ski Spectacular contact Katya for more information. The ASP has limited scholarship assistance for ASP volunteers. Assistance may include registration fees, lift tickets, and/or lodging.

For more info on the event visit:

www.dsusa.org/programs-winter-hartford.html

Six ASP instructors made the trek north to attend Ski Spectacular in 2009: Spanda Bhavani, Karen Blackmore, Brett Maul, Don Rogers, David Salazar and Rebecca Sullivan.

SKI SPECTACULAR-- DECEMBER 5 - 12, 2010

INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS ON ADAPTED SPORTThe International Congress on Adapted Sport took place at the Timberline Ski Area in Oregon during the first week of June. For nine days the National Sports Center for the Disabled (NSCD) held their Alpine Ski Team Camp. From June 7-11, instructors could participate in many different clinics, covering various aspects of adaptive skiing and instruction. The “instructor tract” is designed for new or veteran ski and snowboard instructors or program administrators who wish to expand their knowledge and experience in a wide variety of areas. It is the perfect event at which to meet and exchange ideas with people who share the same interest.

Santa Fe volunteer ELEONOR HELLMAN attended the congress this year and had a very rewarding experience. She met instructors from across the globe and encourages others to look into attending next year.

National Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic - N.D.V.W.S.C.Every spring hundreds of disabled veterans and even more volunteers, head to Snowmass in Aspen Colorado. During the National Disabled Veterans Sports Clinic (N.D.V.W.S.C), an average of 1600 adaptive lessons are taught in a five-day period. (WOW)!

Participants include Veterans with spinal cord injuries, amputations, traumatic brain injuries, neurological challenges and visual impairments. For many newly injured Veterans, including those injured in Iraq and Afghanistan, the Clinic offers them their first experience in winter sports, and gives them inspiration to take their rehabilitation to a higher level.

This last Spring, eight ASP instructors volunteered for this incredible event. In exchange for their time, volunteers at the N.D.V.W.S.C. are provided with slope-side accommodations and are fed well. The work performed by volunteers at the Clinic is strenuous and non-stop for the entire five-day work period, but the friendships and camaraderie found are more than adequate compensation.

Many thanks to the ASP volunteers who went to Snowmass this Spring, for their effort in supporting all of our brave veterans. For those of you who are applying for a volunteer spot in 2011, I wish you the best of luck. If you missed this year’s application process but are interested in applying for 2012, please let Katya or your Mountain Coordinator know, and you will be added to the list.

It is an opportunity for guests at Ski Santa Fe to enjoy music in the beautiful setting of the Sangre de Cristo’s, and for the ASP to share more about our programs and services. Despite challenging, snowy conditions during a few of the shows, each band performed, though it meant playing indoors on a few occasions. We must thank “Beats” founder and promoter Christopher Goblet as well as Ski Santa Fe and its staff, for helping to make sure each show happened.

GRATITUDE & THANKSThe Adaptive Ski Program counts itself fortunate to have so much support from Ski Santa Fe

and Sandia Peak, the community, our sponsors and local foundations. Without them, we would not be able to keep tuition as low as possible and provide scholarships to every student in need. Currently, over 60% of our students need some level of scholarship assistance. We are able to provide this assistance thanks to the in-kind support of the ski areas and our ability to successfully fundraise in the community.

Albertson’s Community Partners

Albertson’s Community Partner’s program is a great

way to help support the ASP! Just have the cashier scan

your card each time you shop and a portion of what you

spend will be donated to the ASP. The more cards scanned,

the more money for the program.

Call 505-995-9858 or email [email protected]

if you would like us to mail you a card.

ASP JACKETSIt would be wonderful if we

could thank our very generous volunteers by giving them an Orange Marker Ski Jacket! Unfortunately we cannot

afford to do so. If you know that you will not be teaching with the ASP for

all or most of next season, please contact us to return

your jacket. We are very short on jackets for incoming volunteers and would

appreciate your assistance in helping us make them

available to other instructors. It would be very helpful to get them back well before training

in January. Thank You! Thank You!

The Adaptive Ski Program (ASP) began in the winter of 1985 when Ken Ley, a former research scientist and adaptive skier himself, had a vision. Aided by grants and the support of Sandia Peak and Ski Santa Fe, Ken set up the framework by which several people with disabilities would receive complimentary lessons.

Much of the inspiration for starting the program came from Ken, who as an amputee, learned to ski using one leg. Ken recognized that those with special needs have legitimate barriers to sporting options and that adaptive skiing could provide an enjoyable recreational outlet.

The roots of adaptive skiing stem from combat injuries. Disabled European veterans were the first to discover the benefits of skiing as they looked for rehabilitation and recreation opportunities after returning from World War II.

In 1942, Franz Wendel was the first disabled person to enter a skiing competition. After suffering a leg amputation in the war, he fashioned a pair of crutches and attached them to short skis enabling him to crutch ski.

Even as adaptive skiing grew to include individuals with cognitive disabilities, it was the evolution of sit-down skiing that perpetuated the growing excitement for adaptive skiing and adaptive ski equipment. The evolution of adaptive equipment has been such that, anyone wishing to challenge themselves, can engage in snow-sports.

The ASP keeps pace with leading edge designs so its participants can have the best experiences possible. Since our inception, we have invested over $100,000 in specially designed sit-skis, hand held outriggers and myriad of other equipment. To keep pace with the changes in teaching practices, volunteer instructors receive yearly training.

Participation in our program promotes good health, a sense of accomplishment and a boost in self esteem. The ASP allows anyone living with a disability to enjoy outdoor winter recreation without regard to limitations. As a result of Ken’s vision, the ASP has positively impacted many.

In the early years the ASP provided lessons to only a handful of students. Now, the program has grown to providing well over 1,000 lessons to hundreds of students each season. For the past 25 years, we have had the pleasure of introducing thousands of people with disabilities to the joy and benefits of snow-sports and the beauty and magic of the winter.

The History of the Adaptive Ski ProgramA multitude of thanks to ASP founder, Ken Ley

Day Coordinators (DCs) act as liaison between students, families and instructors. They are the program’s ambassadors, the first person students and their families will meet. The role is vital to the smooth operation of the program during the season. Committed DC’s are always in need. If you know anyone who loves being in the mountains but does not want to instruct,

tell them about this volunteer opportunity. DC’s are offered the same incentives as teaching volunteers. As with our volunteer instructors, individuals who are able to commit to the entire six-weeks are the most helpful.
