President’s Message2009 has gone by so quickly and here we are approaching 2010. Many of our members were Looking Fine in 2009; I hope that everyone was able to meet their goals. What will our goals be for 2010? There are already some nice events in the works.

Come to the January meeting and find out about the 2010 tours. The club offers quite a variety of tours to beautiful and wonderful destinations. Get the details of the tours; the dates, and the costs, so that you can plan your year. If you haven’t been on a tour perhaps that can be one of your 2010 goals; or maybe your goal will be to lead a new tour in 2010. Please see our 2010 Tour Director, Don Scalise, if you need more informa-tion on leading a tour.

February will be our annual Awards Banquet; make sure you get your reservation and meal choice in early to Dixie Clough our Banquet Chairperson. Mileage trophies are presented to all members with more than 500 miles for the year. Who will have the most club miles for 2010? What will your 2010 mileage goal be?

And speaking of mileage, in March we will begin our annual Spring Blitz. This year’s chairpersons are Paulette Houser and Jim Karpowicz. They are planning a kickoff event to motivate us all to get out and ride. Hopefully the weather will cooperate as we have some nice rides planned throughout the month so we can meet out Blitz mileage goals.

This year we have one new member joining the Board, Jim Karpowicz will be our new Membership Director. Welcome Jim! And we must say thanks to our friend, Karl Tracy, who has done such a great job as the Membership Director for the past two years. The Board will be busy planning our 2010 goals.

Many of the goals for Looking Fine in 2009 were done in nines…Complete nine climbs of Beatty Drive for example. Will your goals be in tens this year? Maybe a goal of leading ten rides in 2010? Too tough? What about leading your first ride? Or developing a new route for a favorite ride? No problem, our Ride Coordinator Susan Wallis can help you with those goals!

Many of us have visited rest stops at the event rides that we have attended. Have you ever worked at a rest stop? It is a lot of fun and you can really feel the appreciation of the riders that come through. Or maybe you have never worked registration? We need everyone’s help to support our annual Party Pardee; please make it one of your goals to help out this year. Thanks again to Dave Abbott who is our Party Pardee Chair.

Thanks again to everyone who has served on the Staff, volun-teered for the events, and made 2009 a success. Let’s set our goals, get together and have fun, and do it again in 2010.

Dan King

JANUARY • FEBRUARY • MARCH • 2010The SACRAMENTO BIKE HIKERS is the oldest continually active bicycle club in the Sacramento area - founded in 1968.

The club’s focus is on touring and recreational cycling. This ride schedule provides for year round weekend rides; holiday rides; summer evening rides; weekday rides; special rides such as the Party Pardee Century and multi-day rides... A variety of rides is scheduled to attempt to provide for all abilities and interests. Riders should review this schedule carefully and select those rides that fall within their capability... Monthly membership meetings provide club business updates, open discussion on club activities and policies, and feature speakers on subjects of interest to cyclists.

Non-members are invited to attend rides and meetings to get a feel for the club, without obligation. Riders under age 18 may participate on rides if they are ac-companied by a parent or other responsible adult.A sign-in roster is available at the start of each ride. All riders must sign the roster to be regarded as a participant.

If a rider has to leave a ride for any reason, the ride leader must be informed.

1st Quarter Ridesby the Ride Committee

The 1st Quarter schedule includes a wide variety of rides suitable to all levels of cycling. If you have any questions about the rides (e.g., route difficulty, distance options, directions to start locations), please feel free to contact the ride leader listed with the description. Our most common ride start locations are on the first page of the ride schedule. Also, the schedule includes due dates for tour fees, banquet reservations, and other club activities. We hope you enjoy the 1st Quarter rides and activities. As always, we welcome your feedback and encourage folks to lead at least one ride a quarter to ensure full ride schedules.

Both the Spring Training and Ascents series return in 1st Quarter and provide options to help develop early base fitness and endurance. The Warmer Toes rides on Sunday afternoons continue through Febru-ary and are great for new cyclists as the routes are typically 20-25 miles in distance and have a more social, relaxed atmosphere. In addition to the usual Wednesday morning Leisure Rides, a few extra leisure options are included on weekday rides. The Tuesday and Thursday evening ride series continue and both start at Big Lots on La Riviera Drive in Janu-ary to avoid the crowded 5 Points parking location. For a change of scenery, the February and March Thursday Nite Riders move to the Gold River start location. The 8th annual Spring Blitz returns in March with special kickoff festivities and a few extra club rides to help reach those cycling goals.

New this quarter is a special training opportunity of-fered by our own Scott Miller, a League of American Bicyclist (LAB) certified instructor. On Saturday and Sunday, February 20 and 21, Scott will present the official LAB two-day course on traffic skills, which includes classroom instruction and practical cycling drills. This course is highly recommended for new cyclists, those who are not comfortable riding in traf-fic, or anyone who would like to improve their bike riding skills. A $15 registration fee (due by Feb 8) is required to cover the cost of materials. Sign up early as the course is limited to 20 participants. More details are provided in the schedule.

Two benefit rides are included in 1st Quarter. Benefit rides are organized fund raising cycling events simi-lar to our own Party Pardee. Each year, a number of benefit rides are included in the schedule to encour-age members to support our local cycling clubs (e.g., Davis Bike Club, Sacramento Wheelmen, Chico Velo) and to provide opportunities for members to partici-pate in organized events. Members may receive club miles for participating in a benefit ride listed in the schedule if they register and pay the entry fee, sign-in on the club roster, and complete one of the official routes. Members are heartily encouraged to wear Bike Hiker apparel to show club affiliation, otherwise, why claim SBH club miles? Because of the increasing popularity of benefit rides, many now sell out before the event date. To facilitate your goal planning and to give as much advance notice as possible, the fol-lowing benefit rides have been approved for inclusion in our 2010 ride schedules. If you plan to participate, register early to ensure your ride reservation. Pend-ing event dates will be verified as soon as possible.

As a member of the Sacramento Bike Hikers, you receive mileage credit for signing in and complet-ing club rides. Our Mileage Coordinator, Mr. Jerry Beckett, updates member mileage credit from the sign-in sheets of every club ride. Two categories of mileage credit can be earned: miles ridden on club rides and miles ridden to/from club rides (known as “animal miles”). At the end of the year, awards are given to members who ride at least 500 club miles. Accumulating mileage credit is often an incentive for members to set cycling goals and to ride throughout the year, in the hot summer and cold, foggy winter. The specific rules for accumulating mileage credit are posted on the SBH website (www.bikehikers.com) and are briefly summarized below.

Club Ride Mileage Credit- Earned only for club rides, tours, and event rides listed in the quarterly SBH Ride Schedule.- Mileage credit is received for completing the route designated by the club ride leader, tour leader or sign-in leader for official event rides.

Animal Mile Credit- Earned for actual miles ridden to and from the start location of club rides (includes club tours).- Completion of the club ride/tour is required to receive credit for animal miles.

Members are to be as honest and fair as possible when claiming mileage credit for club rides and ani-mal miles. Also, members should write as legibly as possible on the sign-in sheet so the mileage claimed can be credited.

If you would like to increase your fitness by spending more quality time on the bike, consider setting a mile-age goal for 2010 and come out and ride!

You can check your mileage on the web!

“NO SWEEP” RIDES“No Sweep” rides designated by this symbol tell potential riders that they need to be self-sufficient.

No one will be following behind to look out for them should they need assistance. It tells them that they shouldn’t consider this ride unless they would probably do it on their own or with a friend. Basically it’s a ride for experienced riders. However, ride leaders are encouraged to arrange regroup points on the route to allow riders to stay together. Riders on “No Sweep” riders are encouraged to ride together and check with stopped riders to see if they need assistance. Ride leaders will still check to make sure everyone returns safely.

RIDE GRADING CODE

THREE FACTORS make up the ease or difficulty of a ride – not counting such chance factors as traffic, road conditions, and weather. These factors are important considerations for riders when selecting rides in which to participate. No rider will knowingly be left behind alone. However, riders should NOT sign up for rides beyond their ability. “Biting off more than you can chew” can result in discouragement or sore muscles, and invites accidents.

• Terrain Elevation - Represented by an alpha letter A - Steep - Mostly steep grades: strong riders only B - Steep/Moderate - Some relief from steep grades C - Moderate - Hilly; a challenge for the average rider D - Moderate/Easy - Some gentle grades, but no problems E - Flat -If any route is really flat

• Distance - Represented by the actual number of miles• Pace - Will range in ‘miles per hour’ between about 10

mph on easy short distance rides, to 20+ mph on hard long distance rides. Generally, the pace increases as the difficulty (steepness and distance) of the ride increases. Riders tend to increase their pace as they gain experi-ence, fitness, and are challenged by difficulty. Beginners and novices are strongly advised to select easy and short distance rides to start with, and progress up the grading scale with experience and capability.
