Jon Mark Hall was appointed to the position of director of Athletics in January 2002, after seven years as the assistant director.

Under his direction, USI was the 2003-04 GLVC All-Sports and Commissioner’s Cup winner and host of the 2004 and 2009 NCAA Division II Cross Country National Championships.

In addition to his duties as director of Athletics, Hall also is the chair of the NCAA Division II men’s and women’s tennis committee. He has

served on the Great Lakes Valley Conference Executive Committee and the NCAA II Great Lakes Regional women’s basketball committee.

Hall joined the USI Athletic Department in 1995 as an assistant athletic director and men’s tennis coach.

As the men’s tennis coach, Hall was named the GLVC Coach of the Year five times, directed the Screaming Eagles to four GLVC regular-season titles and GLVC Tournament crowns, and had a 123-47 record (.724).

During his final season as head coach, Hall led the Eagles to their third straight appearance in the NCAA II Tournament and their first victory

in the post-season. In 2000 and 2001, Hall put the Eagles on the national map with their first two invitations to the NCAA II Tournament in the 27-year history of the program.

Hall came to USI after his appointment at the University of South Carolina-Spartanburg as an assistant athletic director, where he was the NCAA compliance coordinator, oversaw the academic support service program for student athletes, and coordinated the Athletes Can Educate (ACE) program. He also assisted in fundraising and promotional activities.

The native of Murray, Kentucky, is a 1990 cum laude graduate of Murray State University, with a bachelor’s degree in business adminis-tration. While at MSU, Hall was on the tennis team for two seasons, earning Academic All-Ohio Valley Conference honors in 1987. Hall received his master’s degree in sports administration from Ohio State University in 1992.

In 1998-99, he completed the Sports Management Institute Executive Program at the University of South Carolina and the University of Notre Dame.

Hall and his wife Patti reside in Evansville and have four sons, Nathan, Garland, Ty, and Owen, and daughter Mary Claire.

LocationThe University of Southern Indiana was founded in Evansville in 1965. USI is a comfortable drive from the major metropolitan centers of Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Louisville, Nashville, and St. Louis.

The CampusThe Health Professions Center, Science Center, Wright Administration Building, Education Center, and Orr Center are located on the north side of campus. Rice Library, University Center, Liberal Arts Center, Technology Center, and Business and Engineering Center form the quadrangle in the center of campus. Physical Activities Center

The Physical Activities Center (PAC) has been the home of the Screaming Eagles for the past 30 years. Opened in 1980, the PAC accommodates physical education classes, intramural activities, and is the arena for the USI basketball and volleyball teams.

Games of regional and national interest have been played on the center court of the PAC during the past 17 years. USI has hosted the 1993, 1994, and 1996 men’s NCAA II Great Lakes Regionals; the 2009 men’s GLVC Tournament; the 1998 women’s GLVC Tournament; the 1998 and 2001 women’s NCAA II Great Lakes Regionals; and the 2000 and 2004 GLVC Volleyball Tournaments.

A true home court, the USI men’s basketball team has a 402-67 home record since 1980, a .857 winning percentage.

With padded chairback seats, back-supported bleacher seats, and a top-of-the line scoreboard and video board, the Physical Activities Center is one of the top Division II athletic venues in the region.

Eagles on track to soar in 2010-11

Every year NCAA basketball programs all around the country dream of one thing—winning championships. The University

of Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles enter the 2010-11 season with the elements to achieve those dreams.

Reaching championship goals will be tough this season for USI and second-year Head Coach Rodney Watson. The Eagles have to replace six seniors who represented 74 percent of the offense of last year’s 24-3 squad, including Basketball Times Division II Player of the Year Jamar Smith.

Despite the loss of core players, USI is still considered a possible “break-out” team by The Sporting News, showing respect for the talent level returning to USI in 2010-11.

The Eagles bring back six veteran players from last year’s team who helped win a school record 23 straight contests. The return-ees include four seniors—guard Kevin Gant, guard/forward C.J. Trotter, forward Nick Duncheon, and center Mohamed Ntumba.

On the outside, Gant will direct the offense for a second straight season after leading the team and ranking second in the NCAA Division II in assist/turnover ratio. He started all 27 games last season and averaged 6.4 points, 5.2 assists, and 2.7 rebounds.

Returning to join Gant on the outside of the key is Trotter and junior guard Brandon Hogg. Trotter posted 6.8 points and 1.8 rebounds per game during his first season at USI, while Hogg was a top defensive specialist off the bench last year for the Eagles and tied for fourth on the team with 23 steals.

The Eagles also expect to see more of sophomore guard Lawrence Thomas at the point. Thomas, who hopes to recover quickly from ACL surgery over the summer, played in 15 contests behind Gant last season, averaging 2.7 points and one assist per game.

New to the USI backcourt are senior Jared Rehmel as well as freshmen Eduardo Gallina and Collin Grantz. Rehmel, a transfer from NCAA Division I University of Central Arkansas, started 29 games last season for the Bears, averaging 9.8 points and 2.1 rebounds per game. He had a season-high 21 points against the University of Tennessee-Martin.

Gallina was a member of two Brazilian national championship teams and two Santa Catarina state championship teams. He was appointed as a “Future Brazilian National Player.”

In the United States, Gallina helped Reserve Christian (Reserve, Louisiana) and Riverside Academy (Reserve, Louisiana) to Louisiana State titles in 2008-09 and 2009-10, respectively.

In the frontcourt, the Eagles return a pair of starters in Ntumba and Duncheon. Ntumba started the last 11 games after the death of center Jeron Lewis, finishing the year with 7.9 points and 6.2 rebounds per games. He also averaged 8.9 points and 7.6 rebounds as a starter.

Duncheon had his career-best season as a junior. He averaged 6.4 points and 2.0 rebounds per game in 27 starts, posting 21 points in the win over Lake Erie College.

USI has a stable of five new players in the frontcourt that includes junior center Nick Evans; junior forward Isaac McClure; freshman center Wesley Hall; freshman forward Taylor Wischmeier; and freshman guard/forward Austin Davis.

Senior Kevin Gant averaged 6.4 points, 5.2 assists, and 2.7 rebounds per appearance as USI’s starting point guard a year ago. Gant led the team and was second in the nation in assist-to-turnover ratio.

McClure transferred to USI from Southeastern Illinois College where he dropped in 13.3 points and grabbed 6.7 rebounds per appearance as a sophomore. Evans comes to USI after two sea-sons at Southern Illinois University, averaging 4.5 points and 2.9 rebounds during his 32-game career with the Salukis.

Wischmeier signed with USI after lettering in basketball at Brownstown Central High School (Brownstown, Indiana). He was the BCHS 2010 Most Valuable Player and averaged a double-double (21.5 points and 10.0 rebounds per game) for his career.

Davis was the first to sign with USI last year after lettering in basketball at Freeport Senior High School (Freeport, Illinois). He recorded 16.0 points, 10.1 rebounds, 1.7 assists, and 2.5 blocked shots per game as a senior.

USI tips off the 2010-11 campaign with a pair of exhibition games, traveling to Division I University of Illinois and Vanderbilt University before opening a regular-season calendar that includes 15 home games at the Physical Activities Center.

The schedule also includes a GLVC slate that features home-and-home dates with traditional conference rivals Bellarmine University, Kentucky Wesleyan College, the University of Indianapolis, and Northern Kentucky University.

USI’s home schedule also includes home dates with Drury University, Maryville University, and Missouri University of Science & Technology from the GLVC West Division; and Lewis University and the University of Wisconsin-Parkside from the GLVC North Division.

GLVC play starts the first week of December for USI when it travels to Northern Kentucky on December 2 and returns to the PAC to host Bellarmine on December 4.

In addition to the nine conference games at the PAC, USI hosts the Bill Joergens Memorial Tournament and four additional non-conference foes. The fourth annual Bill Joergens Memorial Tournament pits the Screaming Eagles and Bellarmine versus Harris-Stowe State University and St. Catharine College.

Senior forward Nick Duncheon averaged a career-high 6.4 points and 2.0 rebounds per game in 27 starts last season. He had a career-high 21 points in the Eagles’ win over Lake Erie.

Senior center Mohamed Ntumba averaged 7.9 points and 6.2 rebounds per contest during his junior year. He racked up 8.9 points and 7.6 rebounds in 11 games as a starter.

Rodney Watson, Head CoachRodney Watson, the ninth head coach in the history of the USI men’s basketball team, had the Screaming Eagles soaring during his first season in 2009-10.

The 2010 GLVC Coach of the Year led USI to a 24-3 overall mark and ninth-place finish in the national poll during his first season. The Eagles set a school record with 23-straight wins and were ranked as high as second in

the national rankings.

The 24 wins were the most by a first-year USI head coach. The 2009-10 squad also featured Basketball Times Division II Player of the Year and All-American Jamar Smith.

Watson took the helm of the Eagles after 21 seasons at Southern Illinois University. He was the associate head coach for two seasons after spending 19 seasons as an assis-tant coach under head coaches Rich Herrin, Bruce Weber, Matt Painter, and Chris Lowery.

During Watson’s tenure at SIU, the Salukis won 11 Missouri Valley Conference championships and quali-fied for nine NCAA Tournaments and six NITs. SIU also compiled a 430-237 record, a .645 winnings percentage, and was ranked in the top 15 nationally in scoring defense four times in the last five seasons.

Watson helped direct five Salukis to Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Player of the Year honors; four to Newcomer of the Year awards; five to Freshman of the Year accolades; and nine to Defensive Player of the Year honors. The Salukis had 30 players earn All-MVC honors (18 first team and 12 second) during Watson’s 21 seasons.

The Salukis’ success was not limited to the basketball court, with 23 of the last

24 seniors earning bachelor’s degrees since 2002. SIU had the Prairie Farms Student Athlete of the Year for men’s basketball three times since the award was created in 2002.

A native of Paris, Illinois, Watson started his coaching career at Coulterville High School, where he guided the Eagles to the program’s first regional championship. He moved to Madison High School in 1984 and led the Trojans to a regional and sectional championship, advanc-ing to the Illinois Elite Eight.

Success at the high school level was a springboard to the college ranks, beginning with a two-year stretch in 1986 at the University of Nebraska-Omaha. He moved to SIU in 1988, beginning his 20-plus season association with the Salukis.

Watson and his wife Carol have four children, Ashley, Zachary, and twins, Olivia and Blake.



Derrick Tilmon, Assistant CoachDerrick Tilmon begins his second season as an assistant men’s bas-ketball coach at the University of Southern Indiana and as a part of Head Coach Rodney Watson’s staff.

Tilmon started his collegiate career as a player at Hiawassee Junior College (Madisonville, Tennessee) before playing three seasons at Southern Illinois University. He was a three-year

starting forward and center for the Salukis, ending his career as SIU’s 13th all-time leading shot blocker. The Salukis were 20-13 and advanced to the second round of the NIT during Tilmon’s senior season.

After his playing days at SIU, Tilmon spent five years playing professionally in Europe. He earned a spot on the Netherlands All-Star team and was part of the Netherlands championship series.

Tilmon entered the coaching ranks after his playing days, spending a year at Shorter College (Rome, Georgia) before moving onto Kentucky Wesleyan College (Owensboro, Kentucky), where he spent the previous three seasons.

Tilmon, who graduated from SIU with a bachelor’s degree in health education in 2000, and his wife Nicole have a son, Derrick Jr.



Gerad Good, Assistant CoachGerad Good begins his second season as an assistant men’s bas-ketball coach at the University of Southern Indiana and as a part of Head Coach Rodney Watson’s staff.

Good traveled south from Indiana University-Purdue University Ft. Wayne to join Watson’s staff. He assisted IPFW Head Coach Dane Fife for two seasons, accumulating a 26-35 record.

Before joining IPFW’s staff, Good was an assistant coach at John A. Logan College (Carterville, Illinois) for three seasons where he met Watson. He helped the Volunteers to a 74-22 record during his tenure.

Good played collegiate basketball for two seasons at Husson College (Bangor, Maine). He concluded his college hoops career at Manchester College (North Manchester,

Indiana), where he played two seasons for Head Coach Steve Alford.

After his playing career at Manchester, Good spent two seasons as a student assistant coach. He completed his bachelor’s degree in physical education in 1996.

Good and his wife Robin have a son, Miles, and a daugh-ter, Kinsley.



Brent Owen ’09 enters his sec-ond year as an assistant coach after making the transition from player to coach in 2009-10.

The three-time Academic All-GLVC performer, who appeared in 54 games as a member of the Screaming Eagles, posted his best game last season with a career-high eight points in the win over Maryville University.

Prior to playing for USI, Owen was an Illinois All-State performer at Chrisman High School.

Owen, a native of Chrisman, Illinois, graduated from USI in May of 2009 with a bachelor’s degree in physical educa-tion. He is working on a master’s degree in education.

Soaring through years of success

During the last 31 years, the University of Southern Indiana men’s basketball program has become a force in the

Great Lakes Valley Conference, the Great Lakes Region, and at the national level.

Since the beginning of the GLVC in 1978, the Screaming Eagles have become one of the premier teams in the league, winning 12 regular-season titles in the GLVC. USI’s teams also have featured four GLVC Coaches of the Year and six conference Players of the Year.

Starting with the 1992-93 team, the Eagles have made their mark on the Great Lakes Region and the NCAA Division II. USI has won 20 or more games 16 times in the last 18 years.

The Eagles stepped into the national spotlight in 1993-94 when they made their first trip to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight and the NCAA Division II Championship game.

The loss in the 1994 championship game propelled USI back into the NCAA Division II Championship game in 1995, and on to its first-ever national championship.

USI has been ranked number one nationally at one point during the season in eight of the last 16 years. In 10 of the last 18 years, USI has advanced to the NCAA Division II Sweet 16.

Cortez Collins became USI’s first All-American in 1979 when he averaged 18.8 points and 7.9 rebounds per game.

John Hollinden, a 7’6” center, was USI’s second All-American after averaging 15.7 points and 8.6 rebounds in 1980-81.

Derrick Lyons averaged 17.0 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game when he earned All-America honors in 2000-01.



Diond’re Givens led the Eagles to within one win of a trip to the NCAA II Elite Eight when he earned All-America honors in 2002-03. He averaged 14.6 points and 4.5 rebounds per game.

Randy Holbrook, the CBS/ Chevrolet Player of the Game in 2004 NCAA II Championship game, earned All-America honors in 2004-05 afer posting 16.2 points and 6.6 rebounds per game.

Chris Thompson was the co-GLVC Player of the Year and an All-American after recording 16 double-doubles in 2005-06. He averaged 18.3 points and 9.8 rebounds per game during his senior year.

Rashard Sullivan dazzled USI fans with spectacular dunks and frustrated USI opponents with superb post-play in 2006-07 en route to earning All-America honors.

Norman Plummer became the first USI men’s basketball player to lead the GLVC in scoring (19.5 ppg) in 24 years. He also was second in the GLVC with 10.7 rebounds per contest.

Jamar Smith set the school’s all-time career record for scoring average when he put up 20.2 points per game during his two seasons in a USI uniform.

The University of Southern Indiana men’s basketball team captured its first-ever GLVC Tournament crown when it defeated Northern Kentucky University 79-49 in the 2005 title game. The Screaming Eagles dominated the tournament field, posting an average margin of victory of 30.3 points per game.

Former Head Coach Bruce Pearl led the Screaming Eagles to a 231-46 record during his nine seasons at USI. Pearl led USI to nine straight NCAA II Tournament appearances, back-to-back showings in the NCAA II Championship Game, and the 1995 national championship.

Joe Gordon’s (right) shot in the closing seconds lifted the Eagles to an 83-81 upset of top-ranked Metro State and into the national championship game of the 2004 NCAA II Elite Eight.

The University of Southern Indiana men’s basketball tradition got its start in 1965 when the school, then known as Indiana State University-Evansville, sponsored basketball as a club sport. USI’s first official year as a varsity men’s basketball team would come five years later when it changed its nickname from the Spartans to the Screaming Eagles. Pictured above is USI’s 1970-71 team, the first varsity athletic team in school history.

Marc Hostetter finished his career as USI’s all-time leader with 498 career assists. Hostetter helped guide the Eagles to two NCAA II Championship appear-ances as a player and one as a coach.

Ilo Mutombo finished his career at USI ranked second all-time in scoring (1,352) and first in rebounding (917). The brother of NBA star Dikembe Mutombo starred in the 1994 Hollywood film The Air Up There.

The Screaming Eagles’ long tradition of winning may have started early, but it was the 1992-93 squad that began a string of nine straight NCAA II Tournament appearances and 15 straight 20-win seasons. Since 1992-93, the Eagles have dominated the NCAA II landscape, appearing in the NCAA II Tournament 14 times, the NCAA II National Championship game three times, and winning the 1995 NCAA II title.

Terry Kirchoff averaged 8.9 points and a team-high 7.7 rebounds per game as a freshman in 1972-73. He finished his four-year career in a Screaming Eagles uniform with 457 career rebounds, which still ranks in the top 20 all-time at USI.

After posting their first winning season in 1976-77, the Screaming Eagles broke into the NCAA Division II Tournament for the first time in 1977-78 when they went 19-9. The Eagles’ appearance in the NCAA post-season tournament was the first by any team in school history. Then known as Indiana State University-Evansville, ISUE defeated Northern Kentucky University in the first round before falling to Eastern Illinois University.

The Screaming Eagles finished the 2000-01 season with an 26-4 record and an 18-2 mark in the GLVC. USI’s performance in GLVC play that season tied the school record for wins and winning percentage (.900). USI also posted 18-2 conference marks in 1995-96 as well as in 2004-05.

Since the 1992-93 season, USI has been one of the top programs in the country, amassing a record of 428-108 (.799), appearing in 15 NCAA II Tournaments, three Elite Eights, and winning the national championship in 1995.

Danny Gibson helped USI to its first-ever GLVC Tournament title in 2005 and to the brink of an NCAA II Great Lakes Region title in 2006. USI was 54-12 during Gibson’s two years as a Screaming Eagle.


Tyrone Bradshaw earned second-team All-GLVC accolades in 2009-10 after averaging 14.0 points and 5.8 rebounds per outing. Bradshaw finished his career ranked third all-time at USI with 137 blocks.

The Screaming Eagles overcame adversity and heartbreak to set a school record for consecutive victories and winning percentage in 2009-10. The Eagles, who finished the season ranked ninth, nationally, won their first 23 games and finished the year with a 24-3 overall record.


Jeron Lewis earned third-team All-GLVC honors in 2009-10 after averaging 12.3 points and 8.1 rebounds in 14 games. Lewis tragically passed away during the season after collapsing during a game.
